This argument is futile.

Those who are receptive to new ideas need only hear them once.  The rest who stick around and argue with the remainder simply waste their time and only serve to pointlessly agitate their opponents.

If they are making a SW-based MMO I will most likely play it although I am sure I will enjoy it for entirely different reasons than I did old SWG.  I will still miss old SWG.

lol what?

Wow.  That goes entirely in the face of the reasons we've been cited for the NGE.  If that statement was true, the NGE would have never happened.  Thanks for posting that tidbit, now I know that there is absolutely no reason to actually read this article.

Huh?  You gotta be kidding me.  So you guys just want to stand there and wack on each other?  If that's the case then PvP might as well be just comparing who has the highest value.

"My number is 436, what's yours?"

"437."

"Damn!  I lose again."

Seriously, how lame and boring is that?  Also jumping around like an idiot doesn't really help you that much in these games.  A lot of times when fighting someone who's like a pogo stick on steroids I find that staying still and just moving back a little and only turning now and then works best.  At least that's my opinion.

I think platforms like PS2/3, Xbox, and whatever else is out there is really bad for MMOs.  The reason why, and maybe this is why Smed likes them so much, is that they get outdated so fast; like two or three years before a new generations comes out.  This would suck for MMOs.  MMOs don't just grow into a player base and stay there it's entire time.

I still play my PS2 and I haven't bought a new computer since 2005 and probably won't for another couple years.  Just because new things come out doesn't mean the old things get disused.  There are still games for the PS2 coming out.

I'll have to side with Smed here.  The current gen consoles are robust enough to run an MMO and it makes sense to use them for it.  Game makers have problems getting their games to work on a wide variety of PCs out there, all with different combinations of motherboards, graphic cards, and processors.  Making a game for one system that everyone has would be less of a headache.  Of course none of this is anything remarkable or insightful.  Smed is just parroting what's been said before.

AoC loses for one reason and one reason alone; steep computer requirements.  Half the people I know who play WoW play it because its the only MMO that doesn't blow or isn't 10 years old that they can run.  Or they like playing on their laptop.  AoC just does not have the same potential audience that WoW does, nor will it ever.  Even my grandma's computer can run WoW and its a three year old off the shelf eMachine.

I gave the game plenty of chances.  I played it for what it is.  And what it is isn't worth playing.  Incredible lag and recycled content from other games only not as much of it and not done as well.

There's a game being made now that does seemless zoning from space to land, though I cannot recall the name of it.  They have footage on YouTube of their engine in action, flying from space to the surface of a planet.  Really impressive stuff.  They also had a demo engine of the combat system, its all spaceship though.

But I dunno about this Crusade game.  First off, not a big fan of the name.  I mean, nothing reminds people of holy wars, unprovoked invasions, and genoicde quite like the word crusade does.  Also it doesn't seem to actually have anything to do with the game.  It just seems like the typical under-educated dork going "hey that sounds cool!"  The professions are almost a direct copy of preCU Star Wars Galaxies, right down to the skill trees.  Just because you put them sideways doesn't make it not a complete copy.

If they can deliver, hell I'll try it out.  I loved preCU SWG.  But I won't hold my breath for this one.

EDIT  Found that video I was talking about.  The game is called Infinity.  www.youtube.com/watch

If I was inclined to spend my free time working on such a thing I'd probably go with a group that actually has done something and is willing to show it to me without potential litigation.  Off the top of my head I can name Project Wish.  They have a game engine picked out, concept art, coded their own design tools, and even some music.  They've been around since 2005 but they have something to show for it and they're still going.  If you guys are really serious, maybe you could cut your teeth on something like this.  Also it sounds like they're going for a lot of your own goals.

Great news.  Played the free trial once but wasn't making much money at the time and was playing WoW.  If it comes back up and isn't a total mess, I'll probably sub.

Dude I'm all set to point and laugh at SOE as much as you but I must be having a blond moment here because I cannot see what I'm suppose to be seeing here.  How did they plagurize them?

Lunia Online is a single player game on a multiplayer platform.  Its less of an MMO than Guildwars.  Hell, its less than NWN2.

Alright, we'll play.

When WoW came out a lot of SWG players tried it and ended up staying.  When EVE gets advertised or has a free demo again, SWG players try it out and some end up staying.  When Linage 2 came out SWG players tried it and some stayed.  When EQ2 came out and when they added PvP SWG players tried it out and some stayed.  When LOTRO came out SWG players tried it and some stayed.  When AoC came out SWG players tried it and some stayed.

Its a process of attrition.  When a new game comes out there's lots of hype and people are talking about it.  People are more likely to try a game when it first comes out than ever.  And some who do leave their current games for the new.  Gutboy, you should know this most of all because ever since AoC came out SWG has been rather dead by all accounts.  You are on Naritus, right?  That's my old server and the people in my guild who still play all agree its pretty much empty.

WAR is the next big thing.  Lots of people will try it.  SWG will lose a few more subs to it, irregardless of how 'wonderful' the game is today.  Galaxies is losing ground and nothing they have coming is anything other than more of the same.  No new expansions, no new systems, no new classes or races, no new advertising.  So explain to me then, how is a game that isn't evolving or being advertised or adding anything other than a new raid instance once every few months (4 raids compared to the dozens that even the crappiest Asian grinder will have) is suppose to do anything but lose players?

Sword of the New World is the only MMO that I know of that has control of multiple characters, unless you have two computers with different accounts running, which is against most games TOS.  In an MMO its assumed you'd find other players to help you tackle tougher challenges.

You could try WoW.  The game is almost entirely soloable and there is some item decay but its a minor deal at the most.  The game has millions of players but you can hit max level without talking to any of them.  Has a former EQ player it should feel familiar to you as well.  The only MMO I know of where you can smash things and such scripted events is Dungeons and Dragons Online.  But you really have to group in order to get anything done.

This is why they did the NGE.  During the end of preCU, they were losing a lot of subs.  Say whatever you want but they were going.  How many guilds died back then?  Mine certainly did.  The hologrind and the nerfs and the fact that there was no new content being made contributed a lot to this.  In the CU it was worse, although in the middle subs were going back up I think.  The thing is, they saw themselves dipping under the 100k subs mark and needed to do something.

The NGE code is something they can manipulate and change with much less effort.  They have only a fraction of the team currently.  The operating costs are a lot less.  Which means that they don't need as many subs to maintain a comparable level of profit.

It still sucked like nothing else ever sucked before and it did blow up in their faces.  But they must have achieved their goal of less cost because despite the massive dip in subs they've kept it alive for two and a half years.  They have to have been making some profit during this time.  Although the way things are going now, I think it won't last much longer.  AoC has hit them hard and when WAR finally comes out it might just be the final nail in the coffin.  I could be wrong.

There's less censorship here and a large community here.  As long as you aren't flaming people you can pretty much say what you want about a game and the mods will leave it alone.  You can say what you want without fear of it being arbitrarily deleted and know that a lot of people will read it.

After looking at the choices the first thought that jumped to mind was "there's a difference?"  Seriously, they're mostly the same and if they weren't then they got changed to be the same (SWG at least).  All the quest systems are is just lazy design.  Single player games do this much better and since everyone wants to solo now (waaah!  No forced grouping! waaaah!  Gimmie everything now!  waaaah!) you might as well buy KOTOR or whatever and save yourself the monthly sub fee.
