Cat is out of the bag - SWTOR PVP = Instanced battleground scenarios

I'm a fairly casual player but playstyle aside, I find open world PvP is far to heavily influenced by:
None of these factors equate to skill in the classical sense and this, combined with the inevitable ganking, makes open world PvP a real turn-off for many players.

Jumpgate Evolution: Latest Trailer Reveals Octavius Faction

Yay, a faction led by Jason Statham.
Perhaps they engage in interstellar combat wearing shellsuits and piloting XR3i's modified for spaceflight.
Seriously though, good to get some news. Looks like Netdevil felt the DAOC set-up might work for there game too. |

How many people do you think will play GW2 right from launch? [poll]
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 6/10/10 6:58:35 PM
Originally posted by oakthornn Yes, the game is doomed to fail epicly without the support of the all important 'hardcore MMO gamers'. I mean, who would want to play an MMO with people who just want to have fun? /sarcasm off
What a lame post tbh.
This game will undoubtably be one of the biggest MMO releases so far. There are so many mediocre MMOs out there being played just to kill time, that there will be legions of players dying to jump on this one from the get go. I know I will.
It's barely worth mentioning that this could go either way (isn't that obvious?), but from what I've seen I seriously believe this will be a massive success by all standards. In XFire terms, I can see this holding at least the No. 2 slot for a long time.

Rift: Planes of Telara: First Look at the Warlock
News Discussion « General Discussion 6/10/10 1:52:00 AM
It's not exactly a revelation of insight to point out the similarities between the classes in this game and others. Since fantasy games and MMOs have been around a while now, its reasonable to conclude that a consensus has been reached as to approximately how different types of characters - eg warrior - should function and look. Thus most games will adhere to this consensus for player convenience.
Next we'll be moaning that a demon is red and has horns. |

Originally posted by MMO_Doubter For me, having no dedicated healing class is an absolute deal-maker.
I strongly dislike the 'holy trinity' concept and healing classes in general as I see both as the hallmarks of coercive grouping. If everyone has the ability to spec healing abilities, this will enable players to remain effective on their own and only group if they wish. I love grouping with friends and players who I work well with but I can't stand having to wait 30 mins to finally pair up with some asshole for a 2-hour dungeon run just because he's a healer and there aren't any others out there.
As soon as you introduce a healing class: a) the whole game has to be balanced around them b) inevitably, certain areas require their presence however loathsome the player you end up with may be.
I also feel that many implementations of 'healing' push the limits of believability too far. Suffice to say that if people can be rezzed in any game, that effective throws the notion of death in any form out the window. "Please brave hero, go and retrieve the scroll from my fathers body. He was slain while valiantly defending our village... oh no, wait... sorry pal he was rezzed so go back to killing 10 spiders for the town blacksmith. And just hope they don't get rezzed too, or you'll be doing it forever".

Black Prophecy: Modular Shipbuilding System
News Discussion « General Discussion 6/01/10 4:24:35 PM
I like to talk about facts and to a lesser degree, opinion. I don't like to read speculation and peoples pre-emptive gripes.
Q. Has the company making this game posted any specific details about the cash shop? A. Not that I'm aware of, correct me if I'm wrong.
Q. Is DDOs cash shop killing that game? A. Not at all. It's well implemented and has boosted the game significantly.
The cash shop is an applicable design decision worthy of repeated discussion in every game-related post and news article IF you believe it is a deal breaker. Yet with no evidence to back up the claim that "oh-noes, the cash shop will rape us", talking about it at every godforsaken opportunity is an annoyance and a waste of virtual ink.
It's like a panel at a job interview constantly discussing the fact that the applicant has run a marathon when the job the guys applied for may primarily involve sitting down. The whole cash shop complaint revolves entirely around speculation. If they announce that we will indeed need to allow the company to fist our butts in order to be competitive, by all means call it shit.
In the meantime, I just feel the discussion should remain relevant in light of the facts.

WTF has the payment model got to do with the content of this article?
I wish people would stay on subject rather than continue with this never ending anti-cashshop whine.
This game looks sick - period. And my opinion won't change regardless of what payment model they employ; even if I have to pay using hairs plucked 10-at-a-time from my left nostril. If it rox, it rox.
The whole modular thing is bang on it, I just hope there's plenty of variety in the modules. Finally, the day might come where someone releases a game that combines EVE with action and fun and leaves the pretension at the door.

[Mod Edit]
Ganking is for 3 types of player: a) bullies b) cowards c) talentless losers, none of which make for a positive gaming community. So sorry mate, but you're in the minority and always will be in games that want to attract and retain decent casual player base, which is critical for an MMOs success.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Won't Make it for Fiscal Year 2011
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/13/10 6:47:30 AM
Surprised to see many positive comments here!
It's funny, if a less popular game - like Jumpgate: Evolution - gets pushed back, it gets ripped to shreds by the 'fans'. Shame some people can't just take things as they come and form an opinion on a game after release.
Like most people here I think delays are usually a good sign, not 'bad planning' or whatever other cliche crap some people like to suggest.
Good luck to SWTOR. |

GA is the best MMOTPS on the market bar none atm. Sandstorm will only reinforce that.
Although I'm watching APB, I don't have high hopes for it. I can't stand the Fallen Earth viewing angle for a start and while the game looks very pretty, the gameplay just doesn't look that engaging to me. A case of form over function that could well turn out like AOC did: stunning looking game, great music, good storyline but ultimately shit gameplay.
If anything's going to sink the GA boat, it'll be Earthrise. The graphics look somewhat inferior (again, similar to Fallen Earth) but the depth and control system look A1.
Meantime, curious people should try the GA trial and decide for themselves if it's their bag, not listen to the legion of 'it's not an MMO so it must be crap' whiners.

I'd recommend Global Agenda, a sci-fi MMO/shooter hybrid. But I'll be upfront and say:
- You'll either love it or hate it (have a go at the free trial first). - It's heavily instanced, which I think works but some gamers clearly hate. - It's gonna get a massive update soon - patch 1.3 - which will improve the current gameplay significantly.
You buy it once and can play for free, or sub for extra content.
It's a heavily skill-orientated 3rd-person shooter with a few MMO elements at the moment, but they're working on adding a whole load more in patch 1.3 to satisfy player demand. It's more like a free expansion than a patch.
You can have a hell of a lot of fun in a 1-hour session, if it's your cup-of-tea.
Check my sig. for a whole load of similar games coming up that I'm looking forward to and may also meet your needs.

General: Community Spotlight: Why are Instances Bad?
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/07/10 10:48:46 AM
For me instances are an excellent way to set parameters and boundaries, without which a certain style of gameplay may fail completely. It depends on the situation. For example, WOWs open zones work well and create an excellent ‘massive’ feel. However, I feel the size of the instanced zones in AOC also achieves this on the PVE servers.
Where I think instances are a key tool for enhancing gameplay is in PVP. I have never experienced open-world PVP play-out in a balanced and fulfilling manner. One side always has one of the following advantages – significantly greater numbers, significantly higher skill, significantly better equipment – regardless of whether the PVP is one-on-one or two groups engaging. I hear EVE achieves a degree of balance in PVP, but at the expense of the player’s real life.
For me instances epitomise the game concept. Take soccer/football. You wouldn’t go a play soccer on a pitch with no boundaries, with no limits on number of players and with no rules in general – the game would become ridiculous. Many MMO players seem to think that there game should be as realistic as possible, but I’m certain that if such a game was made most gamers wouldn’t enjoy it all that much. And tbh, while we’re still viewing our ‘worlds’ on screens approximately the size of a sheet of A3, there will always be a limit to the degree of immersion available that extends far past instances and the like.

Why no Mechwarrior/Battletech MMO ??

There is a game coming out that is along the lines of Mechwarrior called Perpetuum:

It looks similar, but I'm not following it closely so can't say much more.

This game looks good, but what looks even better to me - as a gamer who loves MMOs - is that there's a company out there putting a portfolio of decent games together.
I'm personally little tired of the Blizzard monopoly on this and related genres. They have no real competitors and pwn pretty bad with their Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo IPs. Don't get me wrong, I love all these games but with no threats to their position as market leader for... ages, to me these games have kinda stagnated and still have not been replaced with anything better.
Despite not being a keen RTS fan this does look fantastic, as does RIFT and the other sci-fi games there working on. I'm personally more stoked about RIFT, as that's my fav type of game.
