Update #14: And it begins...

Posted about 5 hours ago

We did it!  Thanks to each and every one of you, we have completed our incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign.  It has been an amazing ride and one of the most memorable achievements I’ve ever had.  Being able to interact with you all on such a personal level has been amazing.  I can’t imagine going back to making games any other way.  With Double Fine’s success, the world was watching to see if that was an anomaly or if this fan-funded approach could be a viable means of changing the world of video games.  Together, we’ve proved that fan-funding is here to stay and we can’t wait to see where you take it next.  We are fully committed to doing whatever we can to keep this movement alive and strong.

Before we move on to what’s next, some quick housekeeping:  We’ve received messages from some backers saying there were issues when Amazon tried to apply the payment.  Kickstarter said they would contact you if this was the case.  You can also check to make sure it worked correctly by logging into Kickstarter.  They give 7 days to correct your payments, so please check it soon.  After that grace-period, your pledge and reward is cancelled, and nobody wants that to happen!

Now on to the fun stuff… If your tier contained any rewards where we need to gather your information fo use in the game, we will soon be doing so through Kickstarter.  Keep on the lookout for this notification.  There is no need to update your shipping address yet as we will collect it when we get closer to the release of the game next year.

We have opened up a store at http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/store.  We currently have the digital copy available for $20, and we will leave that preorder up during production.  If you have friends that missed out on the Kickstarter but still want a copy of the game, they can go there and still get it cheaper than after it is released. Also, if you forgot to add $15 for international shipping on physical rewards, we have added a PayPal option to do so in the store.  In the near future, we will open a backer-only store with some great exclusive items that won’t be available to the general public.

So, now we get started on the game!  We are in full production mode for the next 18 months.  Expect to see many updates as we start to shape the experience that you’ve helped create.  If you want to stay in the loop in between our Kickstarter updates, head to our blog and forums at http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/.  We will be spending a lot of time interacting with all of you there.

No, I have no knowledge whatsoever. Just a tinfoil hat and a crystal ball. I predict by the end of the year EA will have bought Bethesda.

Remember when it happens you heard it from me first. ^^

Y u lie 2 me Elikal?!

Through this other topic you posted one can find a link to revalations by a supposedly ex EA employee stating that:

"I was talking to my boss a few weeks ago and she literally said "EA's going to buyout another firm soon and a lot of people won't be happy about it."

I would accept that your personal guess about the company in question would be Bethsoft, though but it's clear where your inspiration for this topic comes from ;-)

Anyway, if true i think I'm going to cry.

That's a lot of EA trolls probably a few of them hide on these forums as well more than likely nice article though :D

We have officially hit 3 million combined with Paypal donations thanks to all forum posters at MMORPG.com who pledged and help bring this game to full fruiton and its potential. We made the 3 million milestone that means a mod kit for creating your own Wasteland adventures and ideas will be developed after the game is released , I would imagine just like Bethesda released the GECK mod kits for Fallout 3 and NV. Once again thanks to you all!!!!!!

Will be posting probably a final Kickstarter update , they also mentioned new artwork , and a video . I'll post when I get on later , I wanted to ride thru the night to make sure they made the 3 mil mark :D.

(edit) 1 hr left to pledge for any last minute people that have been sitting on the fence!

as of now 4 hours and 27 grand to go for 3 mill. C'on rpg lovers lets make this happen. Mod kit = endless amount of content. I'd assume the mod kit would come after release.

Yes, they stated the mod kit would be after release.

Here's a PR shitstorm waiting to happen, as the free Fallout poster (hi-res image) site fallout-poster.com has been issued a C&D from Bethesda's legal firm.

So far, so good. I made some free posters, set up a quick one-page site and leaned back to enjoy the fact that I was helping Fallout-fans around the globe.

But suddenly, after a few weeks, I got an email: What’s this in my inbox? A legal letter from the global law firm DLA Piper on behalf of Bethesda?

(...)

Now, I’m not out looking for trouble. I set up the website out of pure “fandom”, and the last thing I wanted – or expected – was to be threatened with a lawsuit by Bethesda. What pisses me off isn’t the fact that they’re looking out for their trademark – as they have every right to do so. What I’m pissed about are large companies abusing their monetary power, hiring global law firms to go after a fan online, immediately threating with a lawsuit.

Had they had the slighest bit of PR-savyness, they would have shot me a quick personal mail asking me to remove the (supposed) infringing content – and preferrably sent me some nice Fallout-swag as a nice gesture (yes, I am that corrupt).

But no, they had to bring DLA Piper into the picture. You know what? I’m tired of behaviour like that. I’m tired of intellectual rights holders – be it RIAA, MPAA or in this case Bethesda – going after little guys like myself and threatening them into obedience. Some people doesn’t have the intellectual capacity or money to fight their cause, so they just fold after receiving a letter like that. But just because you can’t afford to fight, doesn’t mean your oponent is right.

This is - and should be - a bad PR move. But to be fair to Bethesda, people should understand that lawfirms like DLA Piper often function very independently from the main company and the PR branch of Bethesda. This is reminiscent of the "Scrolls" lawsuit, another one that I would judge was not "from Bethesda" as much as a lawfirm acting in their name. That said, this happening time and again should encourage Bethesda to put some tighter reins on their legal representatives.

And, secondly, I should note NMA has never been so much as looked at askance by any legal representatives from Bethesda, and they seem perfectly content to let non-profit fansites operate. As such, I can't help but feel this is a mix-up that can easily be made right.

Thanks Sam Ecorners.

Decent price for a game imo anyone else gonna help make this happen?

Did you include the paypal donations also?, last I checked it was at around 98k and at 3 mil post release develop a mod kit so the community can make their own content which will lengthen the games replayability for years.

Spread the word people 150k more for that mod kit :D !!! 4 more hours left to pledge :D

Update #13: Less than 40 hours left...

We have less than 40 hours before our Kickstarter campaign ends, and what an incredible last month it has been. I am very anxious to start diverting all of my energies to production of the game itself. I am constantly asked about other projects I might consider, but for now it is Wasteland, Wasteland, Wasteland.

I hope you all had a chance to get a glimpse of the latest concept art from Andrée Wallin. Anyone who played the first Wasteland remembers the first time they ran into the Scorpitron, and this seemed the perfect enemy to prep up for the sequel. Scorpitron 2.0 is much more lethal than its predecessor.

Also we have spent some time thinking about and asking fans what we could put into the $30 tier to make it more interesting and to not disrupt what has already been offered. I think we have come up with an interesting list that may persuade a few people to upgrade. Based on your top requests and a forum poll we now offer the following as part of the $30 tier:
  • An extra digital download of the game in any format. Many people wanted to be able to get a Mac AND a PC version, or PC and Linux, or even an extra PC version for a friend. Now you can.
  • Access to a collection of exclusive Ranger portraits that will double the pool of character portraits you have to choose from at the start of the game when you are rolling up your Rangers. This unique image collection will not only give you more Ranger portraits, but more Ranger icons used to display your party location on the world map.
  • Access to a four-episode Video Development Blog that will show you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the design and development of Wasteland 2. Sit in on designer meetings and art-review meetings to see the process behind how the game is made. See interviews with Brian Fargo, Chris Avellone, Mike Stackpole, Alan Pavlish, and the rest of the development team as they explain to you what they are doing and why they are doing it.
  • A novella by Chris Avellone based on the universe of Wasteland.

Of course, all backers who are in at higher levels will also get all of these added items too.

Also we will have a live streaming party on Monday night (16th) from 10pm-12am EDT to celebrate the green light of production on the game. Our Kickstarter does not close until 5am the next morning, but we wanted to get some of our friends and family together to celebrate this little bit of history and share it with you. On attendance will be Nolan Bushnell the founder of Atari, Chris Avellone and a few other surprise guests. We will be answering questions received through live chat on the TwitchTV stream as well as from Facebook fans. I will tweet the URL Monday afternoon as well as post it here on Kickstarter.

Thanks again for all the support and faith....

Brian Fargo

Knowing Lucas it will turn out to be a Gungan Adventures RPG with turn based combat.

Lol ouch... see, the sad part is Star Wars fans can't even really defend against a comment like that.  At this point, just about anything is possible to get the Star Wars branding slapped on it :p

As for TFU, last I heard they had scrapped TFUIII.  Perhaps this is a resugrance but I'd MUCH rather see the next evolution of the JEDI KNIGHT series of games.

I'd rather much see Battlefront III tbh...

Their overall population of players has not changed?

Why do they lie?

They don't want to admit it's changed. Once the 6 months subs and now the free days on top of that goes away, they'll HAVE to face reality. My husband bought a 6 months sub and many others I know bought 3-6 months subs, all have quit playing. So they look as to be subscribers but none are ingame playing.

I unsubbed in Feb but I orginally bought 6 months of game time I believe it runs out in June thankfully, I haven't logged in since I quit kept reading the offical forums 1.2 didnt look like it was going to bring in anything significant so i uninstalled the game.

While I was never a gold farmer or anything like that, I LOVED running a shop in that game.  It was a real revelation for me after having spent the previous 5+ years playing FPS capture the flag and deathmatch games (Doom, Quake, Unreal, Tribes, etc).  Even when I was allowed into SWG beta, I had no idea what I was signing up for having never played an MMO before.  I had no idea that my entire view of video gaming was going to be changed.  I had no idea that I was beginning a virtual life.

If you had told me that I was going to love, no, become obsessed with being a trader in a video game, I would have simply laughed.  All I did was shoot people, defend the flag, and I was really damned good at it.  In SWG, I loved the whole trader process.  I loved surveying and placing extraction equipment on the best resources I could find as much as I did making my rounds every few days to pick up the fruits of my labor so I could build things. I spent hours doing this, and there was also a built in element of exploration and danger from mobs. I loved chatting with friends while crafting in my "shop" which was usually a back room in one of my stores.  I left helping people find things, and taking orders for things I didn't have in stock, and selling resources I couldn't use myself.   I could go on and on.

Crafting and trade wasn't some simple thing you did with a bit of time. It was a whole gameplay system that you could get lost in for days or weeks. I often did.  I would switch back and forth between my Master Weaponsmith and my combat toon, and somtimes I would just parky my combat toon for weeks and concentrate on crafting and social aspects of the game.  I made a lot of credits, met and made friends with a lot of great people, and had a blast expanding my business or buying expensive things for my combat alt. I loved decorating my homes and shops, and I loved being in a player built city that changed and evolved as our empire grew.

I like this article, not because of the gold farming, but because it gives you a glimpse of the depth a good, or even mediocre sandbox game can give you.  Even non-role players like me were always in a semi-state of role playing in that game, because it was the nature of it.  That's what I want back more than anything.  I want the sense of community, the emmersion, the feeling of actually living in a virtual world.  What we have now in most themepark games can't hold a candle to this in my opinion.

This. That indepth, even risky,  'simulation' content (non-combatant activities/professions) that could be added to an MMO is the glue that can a bind community together  long-term in an MMO, and I believe SWG's history attests to that. Sadly, easy internet access and the flood of 'casual' gamers with loose wallets seem to have made game developers focus on on the easy $$$$$ instead of quality gaming.

Hasn't been working out too well for them lately, and if it does its only in short term.

When did PC games become for lazy and low achievers? This was not always the case.

INB4 someone whines about having no time to play because of his 3 kids, wife and dead end job.

Noone complained about this years ago now it is just a excuse for developers to make dumbed downs for players who just want it easy for them, also on that note years ago we didn't hear about economics, markets, mass appeal, and sub numbers in every thread or topic in MMO threads, it was just the joy of playing or ideas or criticisms over patches, now it seems everyone is a armchair lawyer, investor, economist on these and other boards.

Keep in mind, had the kept it open, it could/would have drawn players away from Tor, so I guess I can see why they did it.

If they would of kept it open I'm sure there would have been questions on the TOR forums from TOR players asking why the hell does SWG have this feature and we dont?

/facepalm.

Let it go, man.  SWG was dying long before TOR was a twinkle in Bioware's eye.

I think the dying ended in SWG a couple of years ago and it ended up with a healthy population when it shut down. I preferred SWG over ToR and would love it if it were ever resurrected. I feel that LA made a huge mistake in shutting SWG down since it could have done well as a F2P title. SOE is showing that they know how to do F2P well.

Healthy Population? Lol! You mean the one server that all the free transfers went to?

The days before the shutdown announcement, the servers Starsider, Chilastra, Flurry and Farstar all had "Extremely Heavy" populaton loads during prime time.  The rest were a scattering of Medium and Light.  Of course when the announcement was made these numbers dive bombed.

True those servers were full but a lot of that was due to the 45 free days SOE gave to subscribers due to the hacks of last year , but a lot of those people when I talked to them planned to resub once the free time was up, after they announced the closure in June hopes for a return to a healthy popullation were dashed due to the shutdown announcement.

After first hand playing TOR coming from SWG the day it shutdown, I have to say the game was lacking in every aspect except story and that was their only positive and it's clearly not working for them now, only way in the future if they do make another SW MMORPG I would seriously consider taking the things that made SWG great and unique and take elements from what works in themeparks with the exception of loot treadmills and instanced pvp and merge them into one hybrid its the only proper way now to make a MMORPG.

Chasing WoW's number's and success is no longer going to cut it in today's oversaturated MMO market. Its time to be unique again or fail.

Diablo 3, I mean even if you think its dumbed down, even if you think it pulled further away from diablo 2, even if you think there are missing features that should have beeen added to diablo 3, still its DIABLO 3, the magic finding, the boss runs, social aspect  (They made D3 a lot more socialable and party than diablo 2), the loot, the classes, BARBARIAN. The Real life auction house is a great addition as well, even if some people think its pay 2 win, this was in diablo 2 a long time ago, people were just doing it through ebay, d2isj, etc. Now we have a safer, official way to do it. if I can make 2-3 dollars even a month while playing diablo 3, its still being paid to play a fantastic game.

PEOPLE DIABLO 3 IN 45 DAYS. NOT YEARS, NOT MONTHS, DAYS

I disliked the first 2 Diablos I've played better than this , I think I could do without this one as well, even if I did like Diablo I still wouldn't buy it due to the fact that it is RMT auction house I refuse to play a game that rewards lazy people with items for whoever pulls out their wallet and gives them money, sometimes you have to draw a line when it comes to gaming and this crosses a pretty big line. Thankfully I don't like the IP to even bother with it.
