Star Wars: The Old Republic: The End of an Era and Beginning Anew
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/28/11 9:16:19 AM
Originally posted by agriffin85 I agree completely - all I ever saw on this forum were people bitching about SWG (after the "change"). Jokes and drama posts were everywhere. Now like a bunch of whiners, they don't want to let it go. I am glad because SW TOR will revitalize the MMO genre. |

With all the goodies GW2 promises us, let's hope story is just as good. While SWTOR focuses its MMO on story can we compare how GW2 matches up? GW2 will have cutscenes. When Guild Wars first came out I was enthralled by how my toon interacted in a cutscene. If I had a buff going, it was there in the cutscene. Back then (to me) I thought it was innovation. The downside was that sometimes my teammates had little interest in the storyline and clicked through it. If I spent time watching the events unfold i would be harassed (Aw Come On, Dude!). The real meat was the pvp anyway I was told. The videos and demos seem to bring story out a little bit more. Guild Wars sets you on a path based on some choices you made at character creation. SWTOR does not. I did hear that GW2 devs say that you can do over missions (dungeons?) with a different choice, but not much else. Correct me if I am mistaken. SWTOR does seem to trump GW2 in story in one major aspect - player interaction. Just how much a player can change the story has yet to be known, but to see the choices for players inthe party in a cutscene is interesting. I didn't buy the Guild War expansions, so my fellow gamers may enlighten me. How good was the GW storyline in the expansions? Were they merely diversions? Were they worth following? Did you feel you contributed to the story or were you an active witness to the storyline? Will GW2 deliver us a good plot or not?
Edit: Companions vs. GW2 best friends - wonder how they will stack up? |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Developers Talk Companions in New Video
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/23/11 10:35:48 AM
Will these companions have perma death? If so- then awesome. I think it would be the best substitute for the hardcore pvp aspect of things. Bioware and EA can beef up the NPC lineups, heck - even offer cash shop NPCs. If players really don't want to lose their NPC toons, then offer rare rez items or clones. I think the more depth they put into the companions the better it will be for all. |

Hmm. This is a fast development cycle. I am not sure - do most sandbox games get out the door this fast? |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: SWTOR's Story Will Change Questing Forever
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/16/11 9:17:19 AM
I read a few pages of comments. Forgive me if this has been covered already. I think the OP is meant to emphasize that VO questing will influence AAA MMOs. Not Independent developers. Many have said it more eloquently than I - The reason this WILL become a AAA MMO standard is because of the cost of development. Your Mortal Online, Darkfalls, Salem, etc. will give the sandboxers plenty of content anyway because they win on player freedom. The player makes his/her own way more or less (until the "uber builds/macros are posted online). The AAA MMO will always cater to the casual gamer - because there is a ton of them. The classic sandboxer are loyal, dedicated to the genre, but they are not enough to sustain a AAA budget. Casuals play single player games a lot. So they will gravitate to a game that lets you solo. Voice over stories, cutscenes and instances are the casuals standard feed. They will play the MMO now and get sucked in. The more catering to the individual, the better.
off to work.. |

General: Zombies are Better than Vampires

Originally posted by Kendane I saw that too - last night - I thought it was a Halloween special , but in September? Anyhow, who would have thought there were "zombie" experts? Vampire enthusiasts yes. Guess the Vampires vs. Werewolves weren't as hotly debated? |

Guild Wars 2: Writing the Snarky Little Geniuses
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/14/11 4:37:19 PM
You know I kinda wished Anet got a wild hair and gave these fellas a voice like inner city street (minus the profanities - of course). I'll throw some Boondocks vids up and imagine playing an asura with a real attitude. http://www.boondockstv.com/ - well, nvm.... maybe little rappers - http://wot.motortrend.com/video-find-hamsters-are-back-rolling-in-2012-kia-soul-111643.html bah, i suck |

We at Bioware / EA will give some of you a real Expansion soon.
- sorry had to do it.
Anwyay, If this type of content goes under a sandbox type of category. Would SW: TOR still be considered thempark now? |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: The Darker Side of Smuggling
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/14/11 10:44:27 AM
OMG What an awesome game idea! Gold sellers - once reported by players (confirmed by GMs) are automatically flagged as killable pvp targets. Bounty hunters can get bounties and smugglers can kill and loot em. Originally I was thinking gold sellers should lose their account and their toon become NPCs that prattle on about sales, but at least PKers can have some fun with these RL gaming smugglers. |

What about advertising as a payment model?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/13/11 8:51:07 PM
No need to reinvent the wheel - zynga is worth a billion dollars and not one of their facebook games cost a subscription fee. Sure some people buy direct buffs etc., but many get credits and such via advertising - click on ads , view a video, do a survey, buy flowers for the mom through the ad instead of directly, etc. Could be an ad rate for offline website for the game - and do the ad thing. And offer in game ads where player see either in game videos or virtual ads in the game. The only problem I see is tha you would need a LOT of capital to launch a good mmo and not a cheesy one. I don't know if ads could make up the difference. |

There will be no ganking of newbie players in the Old Republic.....
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 9/13/11 12:30:54 PM
Tardcore - your prayers have been answered there is a game closest to the results of what Anakin did to the younglings. He didn't camp them over and over again. He killed them permanently. No game offers open world pvp AND permadeth. Except Salem Follow it and sing its praises. You no longer need to follow SW: TOR again. |
|
|
Ok there is a game in production that has been listed here. PvP Gankers full loot and permadeath. Rejoice. Here it is
Now you can stop folowing SW: TOR and delve in the glory of Salem! |

Is PvE combat rewarding for the player? I am not referencing the epic boss fights in dynamic events. I am talking about the run of the mill encounters. Are they simply speed bumps to the end event or will I need my brain to enjoy these encounters? |

Ho Ho Ho! They name names eh?
Anyhow this doesn't bother me in the least. Seriously you would pay for a box and a subscription to camp newbies?
I wonder how they will police lowbie areas.

In regards to our freedoms,- note I didn't say we should ban the game. My point was this is a foolish move for the game developer because our games are already under intense scrutiny. Sure my right leaning news organization picked this up, but rest assurred if the Tea Party created a game listing liberal icons as targets, you would be hearing from everywhere of the outrage of the Tea Party Gaming company etc. So much public pressure would be brought upon congress that the company would be forced to pull it and perhaps even suffer financially from lawsuits (using someones likeness without permission, etc.) Indy game companies with edgy themes might not proceed with their creative work - "its not worth it". Of course there can be politics in anything out there. However don't cry when politics decides how games are to be created in the name of "protecting the innocent children", etc. |

Honestly I don't think it is wise for a gaming company to get involved in politics. Imagine if a game hd you shooting the President.? Al Sharpton? A head shot to John Stewart and Rachel Maddow? Would you expect nothing to happen? It brings bad attention to the gaming industry and is asking for regulatory slaps on the whole industry. You may get some media attention now, but congressional hearings - already leary of gaming companies for "corrupting the youth", now has more fodder.
