I have a family, and very limited playtime. But I have found a very nice clan that accept that I just log on when I happen to have time, and not demand that I do this or that.

You can play DF very casually if you want to.

Try the direct download link that is available??

geeez

also good move to start your trial accunt before you have the 10gb downloaded..

darwin anyone?

And your point being? That dfo don't take skill? or that it does not take talent?

because I have never argued talent. .only skill, skill kan be learnt, just as you say.

I don't want to be rude to you, but your post does not make any sence.

I didnt want to type too much becuase it would be TLDR, and most of its been said. So Ill just adress the combat style. This is simply my opinion of what I find enjoyable, and really its a complaint about all MMOS. Also, Im told it gets better later on. Essentially, you equip a weapon, unsheathe, aim, click. The only positional attack I know is front or back. I know slash from side or top change the area of effect. And you can do a simply parry as well. Its pretty simple.

My issue is that this feels like two squares bumping into each other. I dont feel like Im actually hitting anything, or playing against a body, but rather just attacking a 2d square. What I would prefer is a more fluid combat system like fencing, or medievl swordfighting. You stab, he blocks and counterattacks. You block and push him back. He spins, and bashes your shield taking a chunck out of it. Then you sweep his legs out with your sword, and impale with a downward thrust. Think assasins creed. Especially when fighting multiple opponents, this would be nice and fluid, dodging and blocking multiple opponents. Hitting someone with armor and doing no damage. Basically no ones hurting each other until someone missed a counterattack or block then you get your skull split.

Now how you would translate this into a keyboard and mouse, I dont know. Whether it would work in an MMO I dont know. Having played Age of Conan, combat at least looks nice, especially when you do finishing moves. But the combo system isnt that great either. Other issues would be the interface and the HUD. Its pretty difficult to figure out who is who in a fight. And all the running and jumping is unrealistic as well.

On the plus side, I like that you have to aim. I like that arrows have gravity. That fireballs and arrows can be dodged. That AOes have to be targetd at the ground, etc.

I understand what you would like, however that would be close to impossible to implement, I would also like to say, wait for your char to build up, as it does a lot more options will become available to you and make combat ALOT more frantic. It will not add very many different melee styles (whirlwind, powerattack, knockback sieze and disabling blow..) but when you mix in archery, mounted combat and magic into the same fight, you will break a sweat and you will strart to see the fun in it.

One of my friends has played MMORPGs for many years. He recently started playing darkfall. In all the years of his MMORPG playing he NEVER used the mouse to control his character. He turned using A and D keys for all those years and clicked all of his hotkeys. As you might imagine this isnt a scheme that would work with darkfall. I had to tell him that he would need to adopt a brand new control scheme when he started playing. Basically a couple weeks in theres really no difference between fighting him and any other player that I might find besides how hard their spells hit and how much hp they have.  He doesn't have any problem fighting players of similar skill levels. "Twitch" skills in darkfall is basically something people say to feel better about themselves "oh you play WoW lol i play DARKFALL it requires super TWITCH SKILLZ!". It's a myth. It's harder to hit positional styles in DAOC than it is to hit people with melee in darkfall lol.

I highlighted the part that makes your post irrelevent.

A couple of weeks in, you're simply not going to know shit about combat, you're still fiddling with n00b skills and trying to get your keybinds figured out.

When you're getting hit for 90 points in the back consistantly, you'll wish that you had bothered to cultivate those "twich skills" that you pour so much derision on.

Yes it really doesn't take long to learn the game. It's quite simple as long as you can get over the terrible UI.

It really is an oldschool troll!! tenspotting is that you?!

When 10 ppl tell you that you dont KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PvP IN DF 2 WEEKS IN why would you not listen? your opionion in this matter is obviously void.

Just to clarify for any new players he means weapon and spell skill levels, not actual player skill. Gear in other games is basically equivalent to the level of your skills and spells in darkfall. There is minimal actual player skill required in this game.

I guess that all depends on the point of the player doesn't it? Probably the guy that sucks at Battlefield would go on the forum and say something similar. Pointing out that it's all about spawn camping and not twitch skills. I get the distinct impression you're going through a similar experience in Darkfall that these guys do in any game that requires twitch skill, especially since everyone is used to being an uber warrior of pwnage in most theme park MMORPGs.

What I'd be interested in is if you also listed your PvP deaths and kills so that we could get a clear picture of exactly how much PvP you've done. Also gear and stats do matter but quite frankly if you have bad twitch skills it wouldn't make any difference except maybe you died a tad slower and took one or two extra hits to kill. You learn to fight in DFO by losing not by reading which two keys to spam on a website and jumping some guy in WoW with 5K hp while you have 100k hp!

I can understand why you feel the need to bring my personal skill level into this. Mentioning that this game doesn't really require skill probably conflicts with what you have been told about this game. If you played darkfall it would be a quick realization that there isn't that much skill required. Of course some people like to think that they have skill and that they are playing a "skilled" game, and feel threatened whenever someone reveals that there isn't much skill required at all.

The thing that YOU and many other miss is this:

In the beginning when you are a new player, PvP in DFO is very basic and does not leave you many options, the twich the strategy and the good times start when you have gotten a ways on you char development.

You want to be handed and uber-mage from the get go, so this game is obviously not for you.

But YOU obviously don't know is what this game requires abit down the road, so quite yer whining because it is painfully obvious that you have not played enough to draw these conclutions.

QFT!

you guys just want everything handed to you, if you cant be the best-über-pvp'er in 2 weeks the game sux.

And on a side note, to those of you saying that the game is not twitchbased, it is not it istwitch-related, and that is 1000 times better than Alt-Tab-fire, try to play against one of equal skill and you will see.

So I Did It

I upgraded my account from $1 trial to full game.  It's a blast to play and a breathe of fresh air in a genre of a bunch of games trying to copy each other.  The learning curve is steep so it weeds out the men from the boys but it's the most rewarding game I have played in a very long time.

If you thought the learning curve was steep then I pity you. I thought the game was simple. My statement also does not imply that I thought the game was bad.

It feels very simple, until you get it.

The thing is that you seem to expect a wow-world where you enter an area and see 3 different spawns too choose from.

DF isn't that kind of game, and you do it a great injustise buy compairing them

It's not the dollar that makes me not want to trial this game to be honest.it's the immature nature of the player base shown in threads like this on this and other sites. It's up there with the Cryptic games player base IMO.

And yet isn't it strange that in blogpost after blogpost we read of new DF players saying that they are soo surpriced about the maturity of the playerbase in Darkfall huh?

This thread has shown me just how many gamers don't have jobs. Weird...

Even if that were the case, finding $1 in a couch cushion is easy. Heck, you could probably get $1 out of a soda machine coin slot if you searched hard enough. But that isn't the issue here.

But you're just an ignorant person, so I guess I can't blame you.

Surely you are joking right?

Calling someone else ignorant, after your own post before this one?

My god.

Hey everyone,

Ok so about 20 minutes ago, the company behind Darkfall is now offering a 7-day trial for new players for only $1.

Click Here to go to the Darkfall website.

This is your chance to see what the game is all about and it really won't be costing you guys anything.

If you are MMO hopping as I was a few weeks ago, I recommend you give Darkfall a try.  I am really enjoying it so far because it is much different than anything else out there that I have tried.

Some tips I have for new players is to bank your loot often.  When starting out, don't hold on to more than 100 gold without banking.  And save your Arrows as well, unless you are skilling up your archery in the beginning.  And prepare to be addicted :)

Also, I recommend that you play with headphones.  Sound is VERY important in this game because you gotta keep your ears open for approaching PKers.  If you listen well, you should be able to avoid gankers no problem.

The only downside I have to the game so far is that it can take quite awhile to skill up to catch up to people that have been playing for awhile.  But this is no different than any other MMO.

Hope to see you all in game, I am on my 3rd week and having a blast.

Let me know if you have any questions about the game, I haven't been playing that long but I'll do what I can to help new players out

Haha to even charge for a trial? Then its not a trial. And I dont care about the money I can buy 10 copies just for the sake of it.

But now when I see how greedy they are about it I will NEVER .. EVER.. play Darkfall or give them 1 cent.

Thanks for the info !

Good, we don't want ingnorant players in the community

AV office:

-"Charge 1 $ for trial? wouldn't that scare off a big protion of those that could be interested in the game?"

-"If they cant afford 1$ how will they afford 15$/month?"

If we charge 1$ we will protect the existing community (now name one other company that thinks like that?!) and stop the rampart goldfarming chineese..

/End thread

Peoples responses to the review are just humorus.

Darkfall - PvP full loot, risk v reward

all you who try to trash the game, you just like levels, gloss, no risk.

Nice to hear! since i am swedish.

what ISP do you use?

Thanks guys for the answers!

So what I read there are only one server in US, right?

Are there any Euros here that can tell me if the server is dead during euro-primetime, and if the lag is a big issue?

Cheers!

You my friend do not, I on the other hand.. have no game to play at the moment..

Perhaps you should add a note that the beta seams to be full since the beta-app page no longer are available?

So it is in English?

I have found this little pressrelease:

"Monte Cristo is very happy to announce that Cities XL, the next generation city builder, will be released on September 3rd 2009 on PC DVD in the following countries: France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Austria, in French and German languages.

A release is planned for other countries, we will announce a precise date as soon as possible."

That bothers me.
