I wasn't there for the PvP. I have VERY little interest in MMO PvP these days. But I do like the graphics, and playing with the ships and mods. You would hardly be the first person who has been confused by my focus in EVE. I suspect that many of the Dev's have pulled their hair out over the CareBear brigade. ^^ |

Originally posted by korat102 The bean counters of course. We are currently in the midst of the IP Wars. Some Blizzard suits decided in their infinite "wisdom" that requiring an always on internet connection would cut down on "piracy"... Of course, those who actually are "pirates" have the means of either stripping that section of code out, or convincing it that it is connected to the mommy server. As usual, its really only the honest customers with legitimate copies that are stuck. But then Blizzard (Obisoft ect...) do not really care about such concerns. In the software realm, "pirates" are almost as useful as "terrorists" are in the political/military one. In both they are excuses for activities that would other wise not be tolerated in a sane society. But then the majority of any given general population, and its "leaders" are anything but sane. |

Originally posted by Calfis Nope. Stayed a member of SWA. NPC factions can't be war dec'ed. ^^ I was there because I liked the graphics, and playing around with the ships and mods. I finally quit when Incursions launched, because I didn't like the direction the game was going. At that point I had something like 43 million SP and everything that goes with such. |

Guilty as charged... ^^ I spent almost 6 years in EVE. In all of that time, I never went out of high sec, or attacked any other player. I'm still a member of SWA. My main focus was on running missions, mining a bit and collecting battleships. To each their own <shrug> |

No. Blizzard is no more evil than any other large corporation. But there are options they could have taken to deal with these types of problems. Its more than possible to lease the type of generic hardware that these games run on these days (so the investment isn't nearly as great as pucrhase). They could have established launch queus, and let it be known that it was only for the first few days or so. They could have staggered the launch over a period of a few days. Sure some people would howl, but thats life. Instead, they choose to do none of this. This speaks volumes about their attitude towards their players. But they are Blizzard... They will more than likely get away with it, yet again. |

This would be funny as hell, if it wasn't so pathetic. Their tech staff no doubt TOLD them what they needed, yet once again, they have refused to invest in sufficient resources to handle the load. But no doubt, "Its only launch!"... ^^ "Thank you for your continued patience and support"... |

Originally posted by BilboDoggins Good point. I hate that dynamic personally. But as long as it doesn't translate to lost gear, I can tolerate it. If it does, I'll not even bother. Thats one of the few things I really hated about Asherons Call. |

Here is yet another example of why no one in their right mind should deal with Frogster. Do any of you remember a game called TCoS? (The Chronicles of Spellborn). From start to finish it was a typical example of how Frogester and Acclaim operated. Look at the details in the wiki, they speak for themselves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Spellborn

Originally posted by soltyspl Thats one of the problems... Look at it this way, if an interviewer (or site or channel, or network) doesn't pitch softballs, then over time they lose access. Thats how the various nation state governments in the so called "free world" control their "free" press. It works the same way in the game world, more times than not. Its simply human nature, and the nature of power. I've no doubt that both BH and EM have good intentions, but as I stated, they come from completely different cultures and speak completely different languages, Some of the basic assumptions we take for granted in the west, have little in common with expectations and culture in the Asian world. The same is true there. |

Originally posted by Laughing-man True, that has been said. But lets not forget that BlueHole ARE the Dev's and they have their own agenda. Lets also not forget past history in that regard. There is a LONG list of games that have run into massive problems, because the Dev's are from a completely different culture, and speak a completely different language. EM no doubt has the best of intentions, and BH may as well. But conflict is inevitable, when one is attempting to work across such glaring differences. I'll be amazed if they can actually stick to some of these update ideas, in anything like a timely fashion. Hell, at this point their customer service is swamped (it is close to launch), and replies are taking a week (or more in some cases). CS has always been a weak point for most MMO companies. It seems that the business types (suits) can't wrap their minds around the concept that timely responses take investing in sufficient staff (money/time/talent). But that such pays off in the mid to long run, which increases player/customer satisfaction (and retention). |

Quite nice trailer. The game is rather entertaining at this point, and these days, that all I really care about. By the way, the game uses the standard WASD movement system thats become standard. |

Sorry it didn't work out. It speaks well of your character that you wouldn't release an unfinished product. I wish you all the very best, and hope you find new employment soon. |

At level 50, if one is active, 15K isn't excessive. I have two level 50's (warrior and rogue) and the warrior (pally/warlord) has the medic summon. Rift is an entertaining game, but as with most such games, the end game is really limited. |

Well... This still is SOE... So I'd expect them to make some minimal effort, but nothing really effective. That takes more time/talent/focus than SOE has demonstrated in the past. |

Or as I call it... The One True Game(tm). No game can EVER manage to match all of the projections, expectations, and hype that people pile on to it. Its just not possible. Thus the One True Game(tm) will always be just beyond the horizon, always glittering and gleaming in peoples fevered imaginations, and always expected to "save" us all from the current crop of warmed over clones of this, that and the other. |

Originally posted by dubyahite Possible? Perhaps, but I've yet to see it. I started these games with UO. Over that time I've played many, many of these games. Western and Eastern. Its been my experience that open world PvP leads inevitably to ganking and/or griefing. Why? Because some people (such as the Goonies as an example) get their jollies from ruining other peoples play experience. They will go to almost any extreme to achieve that. I note your use of quotes with the words ganking and griefing. Much has been written of both over the years, and I suspect neither of us is going to change the others mind in that regard. The audience demographics have changed over the years in the west. One has only to look at the rise of the theme park game, and their PvE servers to know that for todays reality. Planet Side is hardly an example, as its entire focus is on PvP (what else is there?). Anyone who is on a PS server, knows what the game is all about. Firefall on the other hand could easily sustain PvE as well as PvP servers. I'm hoping that Red 5 will be wise enough (and self interested enough) to realize that. Other wise, its appeal is going to be rather limited in the modern western market. Simply because a game is an MMOFPS doesn't have to translate to open world PvP. What attracts me to this game is that it has aspects of Tabula Rasa. But I'm hoping it is much more successful, and lasts longer. The Chosen are much like The Bane, and I hope that they are more fully developed. In any event, I simply will not play games that allow or encourage ganking and/or griefing, and if one looks at the market reality in that regard, I'm hardly alone. |

Originally posted by adrift02 If they do add forced PvP, then I'm out. It will also badly niche the game in the modern western markets. |

Originally posted by Mackeh Not really. Any game that allows (let alone encourages) open world ganking and griefing is niched in the modern western markets. You could try Aion, Dark Fall, or Mortal Online if thats your interest. Red5 obviously has their eyes on the much larger market, of those who simply will not play a gankfest game. |
