Socializing used to be a big thing in MMOs. Not any more. Most players today want single player experiences in an online format. I have no clue why.

I guess it's because most of those 'tens of millions' that have joined the 'mmorpg community' were raised on a diet of single player games and/or competitive multi-player games. They are not familiar with - or do not value  - the co-operative group dynamics of the traditional tabletop rpg. They are the majority and the developers naturally cater to them.

I am perfectly happy for other players to buy their way to power, if it means that much to them. I am old school in the sense that I don't have a particularly competitive approach to MMORPGs. I've always accepted that players with more free time have an 'advantage', and the same applies for players with superior hardware, faster connections, better reactions.

I can see that this stuff might matter to those who go in for small scale PvP, but frankly the fundamental mechanics of level-based mmorpgs make a mockery of the notion of the 'level playing field'. And far too much effort is wasted in the pursuit of balance to make each and every class/build equally viable in a duel. In PvE, it doesn't matter. If I group with a tank who has dropped $20 on superior armour, then I reap the benefits.

Yes, at least initially. Complexity should be revealed as your mastery of the game increases. At the start though, simplicity is the key. I do not want to make early choices that I will later regret, nor do I want to feel obliged to research this stuff before I even begin. And I really won't be happy if I have to pay to reset certain choices I made in my first few levels.

Ofc this only applies to certain types of options - those that impact on my character's effectiveness. I can never have too many options to tweak my graphics settings, too many sliders to customize my character's appearance etc.

It's never nice, but you just have to put it behind you. If you didn't see it coming, perhaps you let yourself see what you wanted to see? And if she's genuinely manipulative or deceitful or just simply very insecure, you haven't really lost anything worth keeping.
Neverwinter started out with just a big city. I think DDO did too. Freeport and Qeynos in EQ2 were large if rather lifeless. I think that part of the problem with making a city environment 'believable' is that it needs to feel busy and populated. Neverwinter did a reasonable job in that regard, with lots of npcs going about their own business. But I guess there must be a cost for all those npc routines, and also rendering all that detail in addition to being able to handle large numbers of pcs in a relatively small area. No doubt a city can be a great setting for adventures, but to do it real justice would take a lot of work and I think most players would soon want to get outside the walls and explore.
I remember Traveller. I bought the ruleset but never got a campaign going. My group was always more into MERP/RM and AD&D. I also remember the Travellers strip in White Dwarf magazine, back when that mag didn't just cover GW's shit.
Having never played DA:2, I'm really looking forward to this as the sequel to one of my favourite RPGs. I'm pleased with what I've seen so far.

I think Golf has an image problem. 'Stodgy elitism' is bang on. Most sports change over time and often those changes are beneficial - they may make the sport more exciting for spectators or safer for athletes. However, when changes are driven by those who are motivated by profit rather than passion then I am wary. I would not throw away tradition just so equipment manufacturers can sell more kit, but I would not preserve tradition just for tradition's sake.

I think also that there is a certain camaraderie to be found in the appreciation of games (and other interests) that do not appeal to a wider, mainstream audience. Elitism and exclusivity are dirty words in the modern world, but it is good to feel part of a community of like-minded individuals united by a common passion. When changes are made to make something more popular and accessible, some people call it progression or evolution. To others it seems more like extinction or at least the loss of diversity.

What about you?  If someone is discussing the revenue of games, and uses the term "MMO" to refer to World of Tanks or Diablo III, do you correct them?

lf someone is discussing the revenue of games and that person isn't Jim Sterling, then I rarely pay much attention. I'm a player not an investor and I'm bored of trolls. And who really cares whether a game fits into some narrow definition of what a MMO or MMORPG should be? The really interesting games are often the ones that don't fit neatly into any single category.

I've been thinking the same thing. There are a lot of game worlds I would pay to nose around in, invisible to other players and mobs. I'd love to see the rest of Middle Earth as my LoTRO adventure ended at Angmar, and there are plenty of other MMO worlds that I'd pay to look around but which I'll certainly never bother to play/play again: WoW, Rift, EQ and EQ2.

Maybe I spent too much time as a kid mapping out worlds for tabletop campaigns, but for me exploring game worlds is the most attractive part of an MMO. The other parts - the progression, the loot, combat, achievements, raids etc - I've pretty much lost interest in. I've been there and done that and had my fill. But I would certainly pay for a 'scenic pass'.

Just saw this on Massively - that 's the sort of thing I would want to be able to do. No character at all, basically just a free form camera able to go anywhere in the game world.

That's not to say that some new style of sandbox game won't exist, or that older style sandbox games won't exist, just at a smaller scale than AAA theme parks.  Especially since newer styles of sandboxes are getting made, and older styles of sandbox games are getting made, just at a much smaller scale than the AAA theme parks.

That's no bad thing IMO. I don't particularly want a AAA sandbox. A big budget is no guarantee of a great game. Smaller scale 'sandboxy' games like CU will do for me.

It must be pretty demoralizing to spend 8 years working on a development project only for it to be canned before release.

It's unfortunate that a lot of people are playing games, not to have fun, but to escape from reality.  No game will ever make reality go away.  The only way to fix reality is to stop playing the  game and go work on reality.  Hiding in a game doesn't make things better, they're still bad when you turn off the computer.  I never get why people don't understand that, considering how many people around here say that their purpose in playing a game is to escape from the real world.  That's childish.

To a lot of people escaping from reality is what is fun.  That's why TV and movies became popular and why tv became popular.  I believe Walt Disney himself said he made cartons to let people escape from the reality of everyday life.  There are always bad things going on in the world.  People probably would be better off not watching TV, Movies, or playing Games.  They would probably be better off helping each other and helping to improve life.  The problem is there is no real solution to the problems in the world or nothing that doesn't seem a monumental task to fix.  Even if you fix the problems in your life a lot of peoples lives around you still suck.  If you didn't always have to worry about someone wanting to make money or looking to profit in someone way then perhaps everyone could get along and be happy.  I don't see that happening though as humans seem to only thrive under the system of rich and poor where we the motivation is fear instead of helping people.  It's hard to blame people from wanting to escape from reality.

There's a difference between watching a TV show because it's entertaining and watching a TV show because you desperately want to live in the world  you see on TV.  One is healthy, the other is not.  Trying to escape into a fantasy world because you don't want to deal with the problems in the real one doesn't actually solve any problems, it just puts them off and often compounds them.  I absolutely do blame people who want to escape from reality.  Fix your real life first, then go have fun in a game or other hobby.

I completely agree that it is unhealthy to 'desperately want to live in the world you see on TV' (or in a game, book or whatever) if your driver for doing to is to escape from an unsatisfying reality. However, I don't think that this is the only driver for looking for 'escapism' rather than 'fun' here. For me, escapism is about wonder and discovery; it's about 'suspension of disbelief' and immersing yourself for a brief time in a believable, alternate reality. For me, that is the absolute point of playing a game, or watching a movie or reading a book. That is the service I am paying the developer, director or author for. That is not to say that fun isn't important. Fun is nice. But I have far better avenues to pursue fun than video games. Going for a ride with my mates, hanging out over a few beers, playing five a-side with friends - those are all better, healthier ways to have fun than playing video games.

Hanging out in a medical center with my doc and healing people. I was a much more sociable player back then. JTL. Tatooine at launch, before the blight of player cities. Being a wookie. A massive, hairy, two-tone wookie.

SWG was an epic, buggy, sprawling mess of a masterpiece. Better and worse than anything I had played before and anything I have played since. It was just 'more'.

People get angry and frustrated when they fail at stuff. It's a revelation.

Cool Tull avatar btw.

Whatever. I've always been puzzled by the appeal of Blizzard's games. I know they're popular and very successful, but I've never really enjoyed anything of theirs that I've played.

So basically you are puzzled that other people will have different tastes than you?  Shocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not in the slightest.

For my part as Editor, we're trying to stick to games that actually consider themselves RPGs, officially... Same with ... Zelda, which most won't consider an RPG even if Nintendo says it is.

We're trying to walk a finer line with RPGs than we have with MMOs.

It's your fine line so it's your call, but it seems a little arbitrary. If Nintendo considers Zelda to be an RPG (officially) what is it about that title that leads you to exclude it?  (Genuine question - I haven't played a Zelda game since the heyday of the N64 and I don't recall much about it).

I would prefer the game to end or to be cyclical like ATiTD. I don't care much for the sort of activities that constitute 'end-game'. Nor do I really want a journey that never ends.

Whatever. I've always been puzzled by the appeal of Blizzard's games. I know they're popular and very successful, but I've never really enjoyed anything of theirs that I've played.
