100% disagree with you. Video games is not the only product you can buy unfinished. Developers have some rights to say when their game is done. The game industry has changed and we cant judge it by the old standards.

You can definitely disagree! No problem with that. But that's the creed we live by. It's why we're reviewing Pathfinder, it's why we review tons of "Open Beta" games as launched. Whether you agree or not, trust me when I say that every single F2P MMO we've ever talked to considers their Open Beta a launch. They just don't say it. Using the term open beta, as in Trove's case and others, is a way for a game company to start making money, get some free hype, and then do it all again months down the road with a "launch".

In short, this isn't judging anything by the old standards. This is us playing hardball with the new standards and holding developers accountable for the products they openly sell to customers.

I see it as it is, alpha testing is still alpha testing, beta is still beta and open beta is still the thing where they work out the last few bugs. Problem with how we did things before was often the people who really cared about the game rarely got in. You call it playing hardball and holding them accountable for some marketing trick. To hide behind the term beta when things are broken. When in fact thats just what it is most times, beta problems they are working on. When this is the open beta testing phase, working out the last few bugs before they can call it final polished? They are doing that now.

Only difference is being able to pay for it makes sure the people who really care about the game, get a voice at the table. Can give feedback that matters. Any game I love the idea of, dropping 20-80 bucks to have a voice in its development is a small price to pay. I will take that system any day of the week over hoping I may get my foot in the door on some random invite. IMO, this is a step in the right direction. Open beta is still not launched no matter the fact people are paying for an unfinished product. The game still needs an open beta phase and this is it lol.

You could not be more-wrong.  The different phases are clearly defined and an Open Beta Test is as Bill describes in today's market.  It is basically the game is finish, now lets basically do a stress test on the servers and look for further optimizations in the code to improve gameplay.  It is not supposed to be missing x, y, z feature that will be added in a future content patch.

My buddy and I could not figure out how to even join a mission together.  Every time one of us do a Join a Group it would remove us from the group and place us in random ones.  I like you want to enjoy the game, but some of the fundamental design flaws are starting to weigh on me.
Been interesting thus far.

I have a two degrees in Computer Science. I don't have a clue how the law works so I can't give an accurate depiction of how this will turn out. My gut feeling tells me someone is going to jail. It's just a feeling I have and I could be very wrong. I hope I am wrong but this just smells bad. Reminds me on the Enron scandal for some weird reason lol.

I am a Comp Sci and BA and i have to fully agree with you. If i look at the transparency of Elite Dangerous (Financial Report) and the humble salary they pay themselves i am impressed.

I wish CIG would produce a report like this and be accountable. I am pretty sure though that with the salary CR is paying himself and his brother it would cause a huge shit storm from the backers.

There is a reason why a company would not disclose this information.

The difference is Elite Dangerous HAS to be transparent because they are a public company.  SC is a private company so they are not required to be transparent.

As far as a class action lawsuit, that would only be able to happen if the company announced it was unable to meet its goals or not be able to deliver on something they promised.  Otherwise, unless they run out of money no lawsuit would hold up right now.  In the end (depending on how the company is registered) they could just declare bankruptcy and no one would get anything anyways.

Great interview!

It has yet to be seen what they mean by "really cool or really crappy".  In EQ, you allocated points when you created your character which arguably helped more so in the beginning than in the end because itemization made everyone fairly equal with player skill being the determining factor of who is better.  If they go that route they will be fine, but if they go more hardcore than that they may get some backlash because as you said.  No one wants to invest time (and money) into developing an 100+ hour character only to find out they screwed up when they knew nothing about the game and could miss out or be discriminated against in the end.

Let's face it I'm all for a good challenge which is why I kicked into the KickStarter, but I still want to have fun in the end.

Names mean a lot to people.  It may sound dumb and naive, but when I lost mine in SWTOR and I went back to try it out again after the last expansion I was so disappointed that I didn't even give the game a fair shake because I was pissed I lost my name(s).
What about the people that purchased the box and subbed briefly?  Do we get anything or just a "thank you chump"?
No.  I used to be a HUGE supporter of subscription based games, but what I have found is that I feel more obligated to play them to get my money worth.  Since I do not have that kind of time anymore I do not see the value in it.
Already bought the box so I'd be fine with either.  I think they'd have more success with a flat-out F2P model.  Friendly one - not SWTOR-esk.

Really..who cares if you have to play a man or women.. lets hope it's a good game with fun mechanics that is the more important thing to worry about.

This over and over and over again.  Who gives a shit about the gender of a class as long as the game is fun.  So many games these days are not gender locked, but they SUCK.  I think it is more important to the community as a whole to have a good, playable and fun game than worry what is up their pants.  Hell even MMO's without gender lock don't have anything up their pants so what's your argument there?

This is a good change.  Grinding for copper is unfun.  It's one of the reasons why i stopped playing Landmark.  Harvesting was such a grind, when i just wanted to build.

Ditto ^-^

"official site" and "KIckStart initiative page" is the exact same link.

"We are not working with Storybricks any more. We made the decision that it was in the best interest of the game to take that work in-house."

Corrected the quote...

"We are not working with Storybricks any more. We made the decision that it was in the best interest for the investor to take that work in-house."

The hell. Ground-only transport is one of the big design decisions that help to harken back to the glory days of WoW. Actually having to plan your route and be invested in it makes things far more interesting.

I hope they never allow flying.

This ^-^

I recently came back to WoW after a few years (missed Cata & MoP) and I am enjoying it without the flying aspect.

Why can't computer games be treated the same respect?

Well that is a common sense answer.  Its called the majority.  The majority pays the bills and lines the pockets of investors with cash.  No one (except Brad McQuad) wants to create nostalgic games because they know that very few want to play them.  Most of those nostalgic gamers are working adults with families now (though I am sure still live at mom's house) and while it sounds great to live the glory days.  It really isn't.

I am one of those glory day gamers and tried to get back into EQ via Project 1999 and it was brutal.  I just do not have the time these days to thrive in that sort of world anymore.  Not to say you are me, but give it a try and see if it is still your cup of tea.

Also note that ALL ships will be available in-game post release using in-game credits.

Or you could just pay a subscription and see ALL of these restrictions disappear. This isn't a P2W game, it is a P2P game. In this case, you are the greedy guy, not Bioware.

I don't completely agree with the OP, but SWTOR's F2P restrictions (and even Preferred) are ridiculous.  I've tried to go back a few times and would even consider paying for it if I enjoyed it enough, but the restrictions are so prohibitive that it discourages me from really putting any commitment into it.

Something HAS to drive more crowdfunding to add in the more luxury features.  Even if they toss in a new ship at every million do you REALLY believe it takes a cool million from concept to complete per ship?  No.  Most of that milestone money is going towards additional development of the games different modules.  I am sure of the newly collected money is being back tracked to original task and ideas to simply improve them.

I cannot imagine Chris Roberts is living the lavish life styles of the rich and famous.  He wants the game to succeed.  I believe in the game and I look forward to playing it.  I've contributed $65 early on for a ship, alpha access and lifetime insurance.  If people want to keep dumping their hard earned money into it to keep making it better.  Have at it!

I'm shooting off the cuff, but I cannot imagine that SOE would not have already thought of these scenarios after launching multitudes of MMO's over the past 15-years.

"5. What happens when players actually show up?" and ". How does this not turn into an unplayable lag-fest?"

From my understanding Rally Calls will not be a one-at-a-time event, but rather multiple spread across Norrath.  They've already stated there will be multiple starting "zones", but not as many as the original EQ.  So that will spread the population around to begin with.  If each starting zone had two or more that get's triggered based on populations it would be easy to not overload a particular one.  So the question is what happens if it does get overloaded?  It ends quickly and you move on.

"But how does that mesh with an aoe-fest action combat?"

You assume WAY to much.  They have put a focus back on a great aspect that many modern MMO's have forgotten about and that is "Control" (ala CC).  So I seriously doubt it will be an AOE fest if you want to survive the more complex encounters.  I'd also imagine that there will be some sort of trigger that if you run up to an event in play that it will make you decide which route you are going with instead of jumping in with two swords in your hands and spinning.  Why do I believe this?  Because input/feedback is needed in who is fighting who if they want to make it dynamic enough that it is a fun fight and not completely one sided.

"How does an adaptive world of consequence handle NPC outposts and dungeons? "

My first thought is to have it layered (or as they reference "Tiered").  You have an open world area where NPC vs. NPC. vs. PC has conflict and then past that area is more group oriented dungeons that will likely be instanced. Perhaps the struggle on the outside will determine the "goal" of the instance for example if Trolls hold power over the Frogloks or vice versa.

This article was an OK read, but could have used more thought into the open ended questions.
