Once you start buying those end game rewards - you are no longer playing a game. Once you start buying from the cash shop - you are telling the devs to put more in it, at the expense of rewards for playing the game. You're no longer a player, you're a customer.

This post hits the nail on the head. Why are you people wanting to pay 15/months to play dress up with your credit card? You can go online to amazon.com and do this if you really don't have time to actually play a game and get real merchandise for your money.

LOL, yeah I missed that comment somehow.  I think Horusra's sentiment probably speaks to a problem with how the game is designed.  If it isn't FUN to play the game, then that's a problem.  RMT is bad here because it can cover up such problems so they aren't addressed.

Good luck finding that perfect combination of fun for everybody.

If the game isn't fun and you feel you have to result to purchasing items in a cash shop, it's time to move on. I enjoy to PLAY games that I find fun, not buy stuff with a credit card. That doesn't to me sound like fun gaming.

Now that IS entertainment you can buy and enjoy!

I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if I had earned it in-game, rather than buying it.

And I will enjoy it ZERO if it is not available.

So i would rather have the choice to buy it than not.

So... if given the choice of something being added to the game that you could A) Acquite entirely by actually playing the game for your normal monthly fee or B) Spend $25 for on top of your sub.. You'd prefer B?

Just want to make sure I understand your statement.

Nope. If the choices are

A) buy it $25, or

B) NOT having it at all (not available in-game nor in item shop)

Then I chose A. This is the choice I am faced with TODAY. No the one you are stating. There is NO option to acquire it entirely by playing the game.

We will never know if artists that are currently employed to work on the game are pulled away to make these items for the cash shop. So we both have no definite answer. I believe if you pay a sub all content must be included in the game.

This is already the third round.

The first is the two pets (monk & Little LT). The second is the two stuff animals with in-game pets. This round, they have a pet and a mount.

Obviously this business model is highly successful for them and I don't see them NOT to do it more.

In fact, more power to them to make stuff that players want on TOP of their subscription.

Wrong, this is stuff that would have been in their game via their subscriptions. Now it is sold on the side instead. I quit playing MMOs all together to the current greed in the industry. No thanks. There is no way to say for sure, but I would bet that the artist that created that skin for the mount that sold in the auction house was on the current team that produces content for the game. They could have been making a mount for a new quest in game but instead it went to the item shop. What is sad is a game is meant to be played for fun .. not buying stuff with a credit card for fun. That isn't gaming.

Real gamers will wait for games about the gameplay.

"Make them pay"?? How in the world did you arrive at that wild eyed fallacy? NO ONE is being made/forced to pay for anything from the item shop.  Yes, WoW makes Blizzard around a billion dollars a year(Asians have a pay model than the west does), simply by providing their subscribers(customers) with the service that they remain subscribed to. Isn't capitalism wonderful? ^^

As for your last... Thats the typical knee jerk reaction of the thoughtless. Getting our Dear Leaders involved in just about anything is a certain path to totally messing it up.   Thanks, but we don't need any more of that around here.

[Mod Edit]

Anyway, regarding my post,,, please forgive me for the bad choice of words... By saying, "making them pay" I didn't mean blizzard literally held a gun everyones head threatening to commit bloody massacre's if their subscribers didn't purchase a ridiculous care bear celestial steed..... Obvously no one can make you buy something the person doesn't want..,,,,,

What I meant to say is, people addicted to WoW would feel the need to purchase that lovely steed simply because it's new, fun, and the only way one could get one is by coughing up 25 dollars.... So in a way, blizzard "KNOWS" and understands the game is an addiction and they are purposely creating these items to sell for  "real life money buy me now" money because they know people are addicted enough and mindless enough to purchase the items...

No matter what you or anyone else says, it's wrong and unethical. I'll repeat what I stated earlier.. All virtual reality game items should be available in game and require either questing or raiding to acquire all the items...  Our billed monthly subscription should include every item being obtainable within the game..

Those of you who are fine with blizzard or any subscription based MMORPG company charging people real life money

for in game items they created really need to stop and think about what your doing.. I guarantee if no one purchased the steed, Blizzard would have eventually seen this "idea" as a mistake that could possibly hurt their reputation and perhaps in time that same item would have changed and became a possible in game quest reward or a epic boss mob drop...

But no, those who spent their real life money to acquire this super neato god steed are only adding fuel to blizzard and other mmo game companies greed and this could possibly happen with new upcoming mmo's in the future..

A company who charges real life money for in game items they created should be charged and prosecuted as if they were drug dealers... Seriously..

Sigh... Blizzard is simply providing a service. No one is forced to play WoW or to purchase anything from the item shop. The idea that people who play WoW are mindless addicts, at the mercy of the e-vile overlords at Blizzard, may be a comforting delusion for some, but it remains a delusion none the less. Simply because people make choices that you do not agree with in these terms, doesn't make those choices wrong. They remain simply choices that you disagree with.  Blizzard selling items that they create out of thin air to its willing customers, is no worse than the fiat currency that the federal reserve creates out of thin air... In fact, the item shop does much less damage. ^^

You are really strongly in support of Blizzard squeezing more money from what you would have normally gotten with your sub fee. I know corporations love customers like you. As customers we are in control of how much we pay for services/products. When Blizzard started placing items in a shop to buy instead of putting them in the game for your sub fee, if the majority with have cancelled their account just for one month .. you would have seen that trend stop immediately. That shiny pricy horse then would have been placed in the game and the company would test other price gouging methods in the future.

They test the waters to see what they can get away with and I can't believe how many people wasted money on a digital horse. Congrulations you are speaking with your wallets "we want less for our money!". This isn't a casual versus hardcore argument. This hurts both parties. You speak with your money. If items are too hard to obtain via in games mean, quit the game and tell them why .. they would then start making items easier to obtain.

If you enjoy swiping your credit card for items by all means keeping shelling out the cash for what you would have gotten in the game in the past for your 15/month. Because this is what you are telling them. I will gaurantee you are about to see much more in the item shop soon that would have been in game. I voted already on how I felt about the item shop when it was introduced. I quit the game. Sometimes you have to do something out of principle.

Oh noes, some casuals get to buy a shiny horse for real money (that still isn't even 310% speed). It's the end of WoW, this is it, the giant will fall because of this! Every single player will cancel and it will be all over.

That's pretty much what many people here who don't even play WoW are saying to stir drama, like MMO_Doubter. Seriously, Blizz offers a REALLY, REALLY ugly Algalon-Horse for some collectors to buy and suddenly that's the end all product for WoW. I personally feel glad for the casuals who get a "special" looking mount for their money. Sorry, but my Frostbrood Vanquisher seriously disagrees with this being a cool buy by any margin.

If you see this as a "hardcore" versus "casual" argument I feel sorry for you. Blizzard isn't doing you a favor little fella. They are making money of a few pixels that so many people are willing to spend real money for. Continue to waste your money on digital items which cost Blizzard hardly nothing to create in some online game.

I am sure this "game" is feeling real rewarding for you now. Games are meant to be fun to play not fun to buy.

Exactly Qombi! The days of being passionate of making great games is over. Its all about the benjamins now. There are only a small handful of developers that are passionate about making great innovative games today. The rest start counting their money before they even make the game.

The key to getting benjamins is making a great game young padawan....

I don't think that is the case at all anymore. What the developers do to get money today is pour tons of money into advertisements and flashy graphics. Same goes for music for the most case for that matter. People today are told what games are number one by advertisements so they start to believe it. The developers with the most money produce the most advertisements. Most games today have no substance and are designed to milk the customer. This goes for single player games as well. Games are made smaller in length today so the rest of the game can be sold in expansion packs and digital downloaded content.

The only games I play anymore it seems is games made by indie developers. They still have passion for making a fun compelling game.

You are NOT getting less. You haven't gained anything, but you haven't lost anything too. The new mount and pet are optional and did not take away anything from you. I personaly never bought anything in game for real money, so I don't care about these things - they do not affect me whatsoever nor have they changed my gameplay (in positive or negative way).

Wrong. This stuff would be available in-game if it hadn't gone to the cash shop instead, and that is a major reason to oppose the shop.

Wrong. What you did not get, you did not lose. Its very simple. In order for something to lose, you have to HAVE that something. You never had the mount free of charge (obtainable through regular means). So you never lost it.

You must be thick.

Before Cash Shop: Say Blizzard made a new mount drop from a quest or boss.

Post Cash Shop: Item does not go in game because it is more beneficial to sell it in cash shop

Before Cash Shop: 32 fluff items go in game through out year

Post Cash Shop: 24 fluff items go in game through out the year

Your sub didn't go down .. cash shops WILL affect what you get for your money.

No it is not acceptable. I will not play a MMO that applies that model.

Not sure if I will play this or not. I don't want my own story they make for me. I want my own story I  make for me. Which is gonna be way different than anything they can set around and make up. I don't want to play a book.

This is how I feel. They should be making MMOs not single player games online. The next big MMO will be the one that makes a living breathing world that you interact with, where changes are made, and everyone sees it. The phasing crap doesn't belong in MMOs. If someone is in the same world as me they should be seeing what I am seeing. I find it stupid that now in WoW if someone does a quest that I have not completed, we see two different things in the same world. That doesn't make any sense.

Steam has 15 expansions and 30 days for 2.50...My question is is it worth getting or is Eq too hard to get into at this late date.?

They couldn't pay me to pay the current version of EQ, it has been ruined over the years.

yep you're customer this genre is gunning for. the A.D.D. type that cries at the loss of anything.

sorry but the death penalty didn't make the game hard, it made you play SMARTER. it made players stop doing stupid shit in dungeons it made people group up because they had to worry about that if they made one wrong move solo they lost everything. where as grouping up with others they had a bit more room for error as others could back them up.

but obviously the MMOCashgrab genre is gunning for players like you, with their dumbed down mechanics.

Nothing wrong with easy entertainment. After all, games are meant to be FUN, not FRUSTRATING. If I want to repeat 100 times before i can down the boss, i may as well go play competitive sports instead.

No wonder the MMO, and to a larger extent, gaming genre abandoned people like you.

Games are meant to be challenging, win or loss. I don't find easy 100% winnable games fun .. I find them mind numbingly boring. Why play a game if it doesn't produce a challenge? Why not just grab a bowl of popcorn and veg out watching the boob tube.

Let me pay my $15/mo and leave it at that.  ANY tinkering beyond that is just  blatant corporate greed, and I refuse to be manipulated like that.  They're making plenty of gd money.

That's stickin' it to the man!

Not really.

That is the only way a company and determine whether or not what their selling is wanted. You have to vote with your wallet. I myself always vote no if there is an item shop tacted on to a sub based game. No thanks.

I don't think it is bad hearing his opinions. Heck the MMO devs aren't doing any better. I have watched every MMO I have enjoyed become garbage.

EQ is garbage compared to what it was in Velious days. I would recommend no one try EQ of today, it is a disgrace.

There is really no need for levels or XP if that is true and the game isn't so advanced that you need more than a few hours tutorial anyways.

If most of a game is a boring grind that everyone skips then something is wrong, and Wow hasn't always been like that.

thats what private/illegal servers do.. they make you max level and you have the ability to spawn/slay any-every boss in the game.. lets just say... take the leveling out of WoW and you have a few GB of garbage on your desktop.... from what i hear its duller then a rock if you dont actually level in wow O-o

Leveling in WoW is nothing anymore, why should it exist? I enjoyed the original version of WoW. The current version is crap.

Casual Game = Game with Little Content

No one in their right mind should be advocating for "casual" MMOs. Developers love it because it makes it to where they have to have very little content to complete. I don't care if you think you are "casual" or "hardcore", a game that take a long time to complete is good for both groups. It means you are getting more game for your money.

And for the person stating Vanguard was "hardcore", I imagine you haven't played it. SOE has turned it into one of the shortest games there is to finish it. If you want to play a game that takes a long time to complete today, it doesn't exist.

Not everyone gets to play 14 hours a day 7 days a week 52 weeks a year. Yes i like progressing when i am doing other things as well. That's my opinion, you obviously differ.

The meaning of my whole post went flying over your head. Why play a game then that takes " 14 hours a day 7 days a week 52 weeks a year" then? Answer that question because you seem happy to continue to pay to "play" a game that you actually want the content to be skipped while you are offline. I will post the definition of a game and then you tell me why you are wanting to purchase a game knowing you don't have time to play it.

Main Entry: 1game
Pronunciation: \?g?m\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English gamen; akin to Old High German gaman amusement
Date: before 12th century

1 a (1) : activity engaged in for diversion or amusement

A game that levels while you are not actually playing it is just as much as a game as setting on the couch staring at the wall. Would you pay to watch a movie that is advertised to actually save you time you don't have to actually watch it .. doesn't make sense.

I do not care to play free2play games with a cash shop, but I have nothing against them. That is how they make their money. I will tell you I am completely against a pay2play game trying to double dip with a cash shop on top of the sub. I pay a sub for the complete game. When a game adds a item shop on top of my sub fee, no matter what items are in it, I quit. I quit World of Warcraft because of it among other reasons.
