IMO the current changes being made(AA and flags) will help to get some folks back into game. I fall into this category myself.

I have kept one of my 3 accounts active pretty much over the yrs even though I wasnt playing much the past few yrs.

It wouldnt shock me to know others do as well....which goes a ways in keeping the doors open.

I currently hold a LoTR founder account I keep going at 10 a month also cause I dont wanna lose pricing...heh.

I know it being my first MMO makes my opinion strong/biased, but AFAIAC EQ is still the best game around.

Hands down no less.

Well I actually returned to EQ after four years away from it. I am playing on Stromm and things seem to be pretty active and busy. Always people to group with and people willing to help out. And knowing SOE, I do not think they will pull the plug on a game until there is no one left (SWG for example 20k subscribers left and they are still supporting it).

EQ will be here for a while longer I imagine. It's still a good amount of fun.

A few months back there was a serious security breach on CCPs database server, the publicly released story was that they noticed some behaviour that appeared to be an exploit but upon further investigation they discovered that some external source had manged to access their database and interfere or modify some data and in response they instantly cut all external access to the servers and shut everything down

That was what they told the player base anyway, if that chat log is not a fake it could be likely that its linked to this incident.

had forgotten what it was about this game that turned me off when it frst came out. I recently tried the trial to remind myself but just cant muster the interest to log in. Ive only made it to level 7 so obviously i havent delved into it far.

It reminds me of CoH/V with groups of "gangs" standing around to be killed and instanced missions to do. Ive heard that its main draw is the story but was wondering if the gameplay is the same later in the game as in the beginning. Im not trying to slam the game just wondering if im missing something or its just not my cup of tea.

As for the controls....AO has some of the better controls for a MMO to me.   At least they are not doing the point and click thing which I truly hate.   Worst thing in a MMO as far as controls go is when you have to click the mouse button 50 million times per play session....it gets very tiring after a while.   so WASD, tab targeting, being able to bind actions to keys of your choice and customize your interface are what's good in AO and which I like in any MMO.

the fact that guy uninstalled the game after only 30 mins clearly shows he has no patience and probably is superficial to say the least.  Only a superficial person would allow the look (graphics) of a game dictate if they don't like a game or not within 30 minutes.    such people are the type that can't even get  through a good movie that starts slowly but ends up being a truly great movie....plenty of those these days.

I'm not downing the other poster though, that's his preference and what makes him happy...but I just wanted to jump in and say what I had to say as I think older games get too much criticism and are unfairly compared to modern games.

despite all of AO's graphical shortcomings, it's still by far one of the better MMO's around....if it weren't it wouldn't have lasted over 8 years and still get as many (or more) updates as modern MMO's.

Setting, world, and lore is science-fantasy and unique among MMOs. It has always been conducive to roleplaying, and in its better days it had live events that helped to progress the storyline, sometimes involving massive invasions by the PvE enemy, a race of giant genocidal insects called the Kitin (derived from "chitin," similarly to how "Ryzom" is derived from "rhizome").
The world, Atys, is essentially a giant plant planet, teeming with a hyperactivity of life. There are many mysteries for players to ponder, from the nature of Atys to the origins and intentions of the higher powers (factions) - the Kami and the Karavan.
The Kami are mystical entities who taught "magic" to the playable races (collectively known as Homins) and who claim to be the avatars of a pervasive energy-force/god known as Ma-Duk and to seek the preservation and nurturing of Atys. The Karavan, claiming to be emissaries of a goddess named Jena, wield high technology and always wear full-body suits that conceal what they look like beyond a basically homin-like shape.
It is possible for characters to join either faction, or to remain neutral. But neutrals are as diverse as snowflakes in their political and religious leanings, and are rarely truly "neutral" - the term is more of a bucket for characters who are for whatever reason in neither faction to be dumped into mechanics-wise. This has created some very complex, intriguing politics, RP, and PvP in the past.

Some months ago, the guild I was with in Ryzom dissipated, and I pretty much left. I'd often tried other games while playing Ryzom, and after this, I tried even more. All of them felt inferior and pointless. Ryzom has a lot of features, some of which I've probably forgotten to mention, that other MMOs just don't have. It has an overall feel that other MMOs just don't have, for me.

Recently I returned to playing Ryzom consistently, with a low-to-mid-skill-levels character and a new one. I have an older character with high levels in several skill branches, but I won't play her because of RP reasons. I've been having a lot of fun, satisfied and made comfortable by the knowledge I'm playing a game where I can do whatever the hell I want without any mechanics or other pressures suggesting differently, and suspecting that many of the people currently playing the game are doing so because they're truly enjoying and dedicated to it even when faced with the possibility of it being closed. There are even new players happily playing on the trial island, and some on the mainland via the prepaid activation codes provided on boxes purchased from Amazon.com, eBay, etcetera (free trial accounts can't leave the island; since the receivership began, accounts that were subscribed at the time are continuing free, reactivating accounts that were previously subscribed but then unsubscribed is impossible, and subscribing trial accounts is impossible since there's no one who can legally accept the subscription money; but the activation codes do allow trial players to move to the mainland).

Well...after all that, here's my point. Ryzom might be able to rekindle the type of enjoyment you experienced in Face of Mankind's beta. Maybe it wouldn't, it's up to you to judge, but here's the info, so you know it's out there and perhaps worth a try.

If Wal-Mart sells a box for 50, you can bet it pocketed 25 of that.   In fact Wally World might be making even more money off the box, since big retailers often charge game companies for premium exposure space.  Meaning that if they want the game on the end of the aisle or whatnot they have to pay extra for it.  The box itself cost 10 to package and get to the store (maybe more if the manual is nice and thick).   At best a Dev is making 10-15 bucks off each box.

So Box doesn't make that much sense, except as an advertising tool.... IF you believe that most people make a decision to buy a game while walking around inside of a retail store.....  now more often than not these days decisions are not made walking around inside a retail store.   Today people make their mind up on the internet.   So is there really much point in spending all that money to box something up and sell it retail box?

You would be better off just giving the game out for free to get as many people as you can hooked on it, then pull in the real money through subscription fees IMO.   And I feel pretty confident that within 5-6 years that will become the dominant distribution method.  Worst case scenario I envision giving the game out for a free 2 week trial with a requirement that if you want to keep playing you have to pay an extra 10-15 dollar license fee outside of the monthly fee.  Even that though will fade as games become more mainstreme and getting the subscription fees will become prominant.  Of course we will also start to see advertising inside games, but that's another topic.

MapleStory is free, it has a colorful and friendly atmosphere and it has hundreds of ways to customize your character, which is something a lot of MMORPGs lack.

After-all there are VERY few programs out right now or in development that REQUIRE DX10. And about the only program i can think off that Requires DX10 is Halo2
