I will also vote MH as the best cashshop implementation.

There is actually enough inv space (particularly if you have a team up) unless you need to horde everything.

I have given up on F2P MMO's...PERIOD. You get exactly what you PAY FOR but in the case of a F2P MMO you get less. Microtransactions and "cash shops" have spelled the death of MMO's for me. You may disagree, but it is my wallet that tells me that F2P is not free and you can't get the game you want without PAYING more up front. It just isn't worth it. This applies to ESO and probably soon to Wildstar as well.

I disagree.

It is my wallet that tells me that F2P is free and I can have free fun without PAYING anything. It is total worth it (how can free fun not worth it for me?).

And better yet, it applies to more and more games.

Do you just buy whatever you need when you need it? Do you buy the same things month to month? What's the past year been like on a monthly basis for your purchases? I'm trying to formulate some expectations. Be honest too, I'm sure there is a widespread difference, I don't care about amount of money, just what are your normal purchases monthly.

Very simple ... buy nothing. If i hit pay wall, go to the next game.

To be honest, i did purchase marvel heroes with some steam credit I got with trade-in (one time thing). But I doubt i would spend real money on most cash shop games.

This has been my philosophy as well, that's why I am asking, I wanted to enhance the experienc, but I ddon't want to just jump in with no expectations. From the lack of responses though, this might be a little too touchy of a subject. I wonder why?

Because most are freeloading like me?

Given what I have read and seen in cash shops, i bet it is more likely to get buyer's regret, than "enhancing your experience". So i think what you are already doing is probably the best way of going about it.

You need to be a whale, and spend with no guilt, for the cashshop to give you a positive experience, i think.

Usually that is essentially the choices of classes that are available. I would say that in my experience in mmos, DPS classes are the most popular, followed by tanks, healers and then support. Truly, I think the reason why those roles and players don't flock to them because those roles are not as fun or interesting to play. A more creative process to bring tanking and healing and even support roles to life, I believe players would be more inclined to play those roles that are needed.

You don't know if it is because the mechanics of tanking/healing are not "creative" enough, or people just like to deal damage.

The simplest solution is to make all classes self-suffiicient, but some syneries to increase power/effectiveness when in groups (like in D3).

You can't just add a zillion cutscenes in a MMO to set the mode, some works but constantly pausing the gameplay only works in single player games.

It works in instances. And works if you provide a "skip" button.

MMOs are not the only multiple player games out there, and certainly there are other online games with cut scenes.

That is because those are solo RPGS. Correct statement. I don't get why people who hate group play and yet still play mmo?

For the content? IP? the occasional group experience? There are plenty of reasons.

For example, I play Marvel Heroes as a single player game because there simply isn't another action RPG where I can play so many iconic marvel characters.

The fact that it is a MMO is quite incidental.

In a high fantasy game that is supposed to mimic a more primitive life style where you are just trying to survive in the wilderness and there is a lot of unknown.

Says who? You can easily tweak the lore to say instead of technology, the setting has magic in its place, and that allows for magic portals, magic communications, magic auction houses, and so on ... you get the idea.

You can justify anything by creative writing.

I guarantee you that the next Blizzard MMORPG is not sub based even though they would get plenty of subs. You can read the writing on the wall from the fact they released Hearthstone and HOTs as F2P models. A game like EVE where time is how you get skills makes some sense as sub based, pretty much none of the rest make sense.

I don't think Blizz will make another MMORPG after they scrapped titan. The next game after HOTS is Overwatch.

It is okay if you want to treat games that way.  I kind of treat many games that way these days because they are basically built to be disposable entertainment.  That is not how they have always been and gaming has always been an important hobby to me.  I think as I grow older and see gaming going down hill (IMO) to entertain the masses I feel even more strongly about it.

I suppose we differ by our philosophy towards games. Games more important to me when i was much younger but now ... there are so many other much more (to me, of course) important things i can do (like fun work that actually will get me somewhere, or spending time with family) that i feel games are a waste of time.

Certainly it is a "good" waste of time in the sense that it helps me relax, recharged, but I do not want to focus too much on it. Sure, i probably still do more than most people (like i would read about builds, and choose one i like, and optimze gear to some extend) .... but i don't want to play any game "seriously" any more.

And i have other hobbies (like collecting toys .. which is a lot more expensive than games, but less time consuming) and there is no reason why games should be more important than others.

Haters gonna hate.

Every new game release has it's hypers and it's trolls.  There comes a time when you take everything said (or read) with a grain of salt and decide for yourself what is good and what is not.  It's called being a grown up.  Kinda sneaks up on you, that.

Given that the market is quite robust, i doubt haters are really "harming" anything.

Yet, despite this, I find I shelved D3 on my PS4 in favor of playing an older game that emphasizes multiplayer PvP (BF4).  I haven't launched D3 since I bought BF4.  Not that D3 is bad, but I just can't stay with a strictly PvE experience. :/

There are always personal preferences. You don't like pve strict games ... which is totally fine. Just like i usually don't play PvP only games.

But if you are looking at pve-only hack-n-slash loot games, there are many reasons (good combat, cool abilities, difficulty settings, loot interacts with skills) why D3 is successful. And many of those lessons are relevant to pve parts of MMOs (as games like PoE and MH have found out).

I'd agree with criticism around the magnitude of challenges and how they make them available (it was a part of D3 I hated too; Blizzard too often lately has treated difficulty modes as tiers of progression, when what they really need to be are difficulty modes so that all players can immediately enjoy a challenge suitable to their current skill.)  But that doesn't change the fact that the actual combat still ends up playing better than any other MMORPG I've played.  CoH, RIFT, and ToR came very close, but weren't quite there for various reasons.

Wait .. isn't that what D3 has? You can choose the level of difficulties (normal, .... torment 1 to 6) right from the beginning.

I believe difficulty settings were added later. Some time after release. The 360 version had them. But its still quite easy, even on the highest settings.

Yes it was added after patch 1.06 or 1.08.

However, it is no longer true that the highest setting is quite easy. Today, the most difficult game mode is greater rift, and it is an infinite progression. So there is no such thing as "quite easy" because the difficulty goes on forever.

In fact, for example, the highest greater rift a wiz has reached solo is 48. So by definition 49 is too difficult (so far) for any human on earth.

I understand what you are saying.  I just feel differently about it.  I don't feel games are fun when they are just about killing with no purpose other then to level and get new loot.  There has to be more then that to give the killing and leveling meaning, (not to mention things to do outside of just killing).  The setting and the story behind the classes is what gives them meaning.  It's what gave me enjoyment when playing games like Baldur's Gate, Everquest, and many other games in the past.  I don't feel games today have that meaning for classes.  It's more of an exploitation of getting players to do something simple like killing repeating the same content repeatedly and grinding for loot.  This is not how games started out.  It matters little that you feel games should only be about this.  To me this is what is missing from games today.  Any real purpose in the game.  Without purpose you really can't have fun with the game.  Gaming can be very similar to interactive movies and books.  There isn't much point in arguing this with you though.  I know you like X game like Diablo 3 where you can jump in, grind an instance, and jump out.  I'm not certain how this entertains you for long, but whatever makes you happy.

That i can answer. By playing many games? Playing a wiz in a greater rift feels very different from playing a DH, feels very different from playing Ironman in a cosmic terminal (MH's version of an instance).

So it is not grind, it is fun combat. If it is not fun, i am not doing it. And when i am bored with these 2 games, there are more ... warframe, Titanquest (old but i haven't played), Van Helsing ... the upcoming Lost Ark ... and even if i am bored with all these, there are FPS, adventure games, tv, movies.

The point is .. no one game needs to entertain me for long. I usually don't have that much time for one game anyway.

There is no "meaning" in games .. I can enjoy stories, for sure (also in movies) but that does not make them "real" or "mean anything" beyond I have fun enjoying the stories.

This probably says it best. I want a game that isn't going to be popular. I want a world and not a game and most just want a quick game to blow some time on. I want to log in every night just to see how the server changed since the last time I logged on. Even if that means there are times where someone else dictates my play for the night or that I struggle to find something to do. I want really high peaks of enjoyment on the best of nights and I'll gladly pay with valleys on the nights where things go wrong.

Most players want to be able to jump into the game and instantly have fun every single time they log in even if it is a pretty shallow fun. I want a world, not a game. That isn't a popular opinion overall though. I would never make the game I want if I were someone involved in making MMORPG and wanted a steady paycheck.

and i want  a game, not a world. The real world is enough "world" for me.

Let's vote with our wallets and see what the market decides.

I realize they will probably fail at actually doing half of what they want, but at least it is pointing things in the right direction. Most of the new MMORPG coming out I already played with a different name, why would I play a flashier version of the same tired thing.

Because flashier is fun for 15 minutes? Is there a reason why i should not get a fun 15 min?

15 minutes is great if you're a wet behind the ears 17 year old; us vets typically require a little more "entertainment value" than that.

Different strokes for different folks, right.

nah .. i am almost 50 .. and i don't have that much time for mere games. 15 min gaming is great. In fact, that is one of the reason I like D3. I can go in .. do just one greater rift, relaxed, and get back to work without wasting hours.

Secondly you are quite right, when you go to buy a computer online you don't want to have to chat to someone about their day. But that is someone different to electing to play a massively multiplayer online computer game with other people. You have elected to enter a social form of gaming. It would be like going into a computer shop, walking up to the counter, pointing at a PC and then refusing to speak to the guy serving you.

you are assuming everyone plays MMO to interact with other people in an economic fashion. That is simply not true, given the progression combat/loot nature of many MMOs.

Some only play MMOs for the content.

The reason why D3 has better combat is because they put a lot of neat abilities into the game .. and it is really about those details, instead of any broad "system designs".

For example, the slow time bubble has several versions. One will be able to be cast far away. One will stun mobs at the boundary. ... and so on.

So you can really customize what you want to do, as opposed to making a number bigger here, or there.

No other companies have the resources to make so many different abilities & mechanics. For example, each version of the wiz hydra skills need a different animation and mechanics. Marvel Heroes come close by having a limited set for each hero (class) but have a large number of heroes (classes).

Ok let me paint a small picture. This goes out to those who liked Saint's Row and GTA.

Remember the first times you played GTA, now picture that experience with thousands of other players roaming around the city with you.

Nuff said.

It doesnt exist to the scale you want.

It has been tried before, with ABP, MxO and such bet there doesnt seem to be a real need for an mmo component to these games when just plain multiplay will suffice.

In otherwords, "they" can make just as much money poping out single and multiplayer games in the setting.

yeah .. making it into a MMO really does not make such game much more fun ... at least not to me.
