I can totally see how unimportant games are in your life...

(BTW i agree with what you said about people vs games, but, come on man, lets be a little realistic here)

you can't distinguish between actual gaming and talking about gaming?

I can come here and put in my two cents if I have 2 minutes of free time, and I need at least 15 for a gaming session. Plus, if i come here so much, it should be an indication that I like forum pvp much more than video gaming.

Yes, gaming is that unimportant .. i would even come here instead of playing a game .. like now.

So... Gaming is unimportant, but posting in an internet forum about a very specific subgenre of gaming is...... ?

Anyways, i was just ribbing you.  Generally people don't spend as much time and effort in a forum about a topic they find "unimportant".

yes .. because it is fun, and convenient? In fact, way more convenient than playing actual games.

Plus, posting takes a lot less effort & time than you think ... just time yourself and see how long did it take you to post the response. 15 seconds?

Nothing .. MMOs have not been massive for a long time. Otherwise World of Tank would not have been called a MMO by so many reviewers.

Sure you can, it doesnt have any value in just stating same thing when discussion was past that....on like page 3.

Of course it  does .. just not to you.

You don't think i am here trying convince others, or bring anything new, do you? You don't know this forum is mostly flogging the dead horse, and there is really no new arguments to be had?

Of course it doesnt to me, i try to stay out of flogging dead horses as much as i can.

Does not seem like it though .. you are still flogging the dead horse about flogging the dead horse. You know that comes up a lot, right?

I want X-Men Legends 3. XML2 is still one of my top favorite games...I have been waiting for another similar style game to top it. D3 came close but Marvel characters are just too iconic to compare.

Marvel Heroes is it ... you can play cyclops, wolverine (which i have), rogue (a great implementation of rogue .. better than all other games), storm, ... even juggernaunt, magneto ....

BTW, isn't Marvel Ultimate Alliance even better than XML2 since it has characters other than just xmen?

Thus supporting my contention of them being antisocial groupers.

nope .. it supports the contention of them being antisocial .. they can be antisocial soloers as well as antisocial groupers.

I think it supports the fact that MMO's simply aren't being made with the groupers in mind. The MMO's with the solo content are the most popular because.. well.. have you seen any grouping focused game? I think people chose Balanced for the same reason I did - they want to group but the games don't let them or don't allow them to often enough, so they end up with a forced balanced gameplay.

Yes, all MOBAs require playing in teams of 5?

Yes, because MOBA's are MMORPGs.  Narius, you're killin me man, you're usually better than this...

And yet no one is talking about MMORPGs .. if you actually *read* the post I am responding to .. it said "MMO", not MMORPGs.

Am i mistaken in thinking people actually cares about definitions? Or may be you should read more carefully.

The biggest issue with any game based on a specific IP is that many players will want to play the same IP character.  The simplest way to allow the players to be whichever character they want is to make the game single player, where the game controls the number of Hulks or Scarlet Witches running around.  Adding a multi-player element either has to go the make-your-own character route, like CoH/CO, or embrace the immersion-challenging Marvel Heroes, where you might see a dozen people running around as Cyclops or Wolverine or Black Canary.  Both can make interesting games, but both styles suffer from distancing themselves from the IP.  The result, they become less like RPGs because they lose the unique personalities from the IP.

That is my biggest gripe of Marvel Heroes, which i like very much. I am happy to live with it because immersion is really not that important, plus you can always argue .. the marvel universe has parallel universes anyway (ultimate, the regular, and so on and so forth) .... and that the game is fun, and you can always go into the instances to escape the crowd.

It would be better though (for me at least) if they get rid of the public zones.

I do think Diablo-like game is a perfect fit .. because the combat mirrors combat book action (one against many) better.

I think the play style variety itself is an incentive to hop between characters, and MH does make it easy to do so ... and that there are benefits (the synergy system) to play more than one heroes.

Personally i like MH way more than CoH .. just because if i want to play comic book like heroes, i want to play the "real deal" and not some no one that I make up. I would have like DC Universe a lot better if i can actually play Superman, than a Superman knock-off.

Slaughtering endless waves of meaningless minions isn't really what comic books tend to be about.  Typically it's more about their conflict with the big villain than their endless minions, which is why a fighting game works great.

As for Superman?  Well, personally I feel like he's basically the worst superhero design of all time.  He does everything and has an arbitrary weakness.  The poor bastards stuck trying to create good stories with that character have their work cut out for them, since good story design will relate somehow to the human condition, and Superman seems deliberately designed to be impossible to relate to.

"Endless minions" .. you said it .. not me. You have to get through the endless minions first .. then the boss fight. That describe Diablo exactly.

Yes, superman is a bit brand .. but that my point is that if I want play a DC game, i want to play the real heroes, batman, the flash and so on ... and not some self-made knock off.

Yes, it is sad that a handful of emo critics recycle their one thought that amounts to "I have superior taste and all MMOs suck" here on a daily basis.

You don't love MMOs. What you actually love is being thought of as an MMO connoisseur.

Those who truly love MMOs play one.

Could just as easily say you are a compromising semantics jockey calling solo player games MMOs.

hmm .. the whole world (websites, industrial research firms, reviewers ... ) except a few here are calling solo games MMOs. I could just easily say you are stuck in the past and refuse to accept the new reality of MMOs.

BTW, you don't need to love MMOs to play one. You just need to find them mildly entertaining, and in the right mood.

Using the word "love" for mere games is kind of excessive to me (and i understand that is personal). Personally that word reserves for my family, and my work. Entertainment ... not so much.

Marvel Heroes and City of Heroes are really the most reasonable directions that could go.

If you're going to let players build their own heroes, you ditch Marvel entirely and just let players build their own characters (CoH) and create a MMORPG around that. It won't matter that 99% of the heroes running around are nobodies, because the game isn't supposed to be about a particular IP.

Otherwise, you create a game where all the characters being used are those specific heroes, and pick a genre that lets you use multiple characters.  Admittedly creating a Diablo-like game (Marvel Heroes) isn't the best genre fit, since there seems to be little incentive to hop between characters, but a MMORPG would be even worse in this regard.  But they do have a few other genres (CCG, fighting) where the characters are used to better effect.  Also I think a create-your-party RPG like Freedom Force would work fantastic with the Marvel IP.

I find these gf/wife analogies about games just silly. I married to ONE person. I don't play just one game. If I lost my wife, I probably will die of sorrow. If tomorrow a game I like close down, so what .. there are tons of other entertainment.

I made kids with my wife and we build a life. That I would consider an achievement. Games .. are just a waste of time ... in a way to past time in a fun manner (not unlike other entertainment like TV, anime, movies, and posting here).

Games are just not that important compared to people in my life.

I agree. Completely.

But the analogy was that not everything is just nostalgia or looking back with rose colored glasses. Just because I fell in love with someone, or something, twenty years ago does not mean I should move on. Heck, my wife still refuses to play any MMORPG except EQ / EQ2, and she prefers EQ.

My daughters like GW2, I still can't figure out where I went wrong

Certainly it is your prerogative to continue to like an entertainment .. just like there are those who still read their favorite books again and again.

However, it is wrong to equate that with personal relationship, and expect others to do the same. Marriage is a lot more universal (although not as absolute as before) than attitudes towards entertainment.

Entertainment is just not as important as personal relationships to many .. and rightly so.

OMG .. I am so so sorry for your loss, and I cannot begin to imagine what I would do or feel if I am in your shoes.

I am still married to my first girlfriend.

When you find the right person, you don't let go of her.

The only problem with that is that the core population will consume that content in days instead of months (currently) and not years (as it was and still should be).

So? May be the targeted audience is not the core population who consume content in days. May be they can make money off them in days, and so they are welcome to leave and come back when there is more content.

There is no reason why devs need every player to play 24/7 for years.

Of course I play solo RPG. But why would I not play MMOs when they can be played as solo RPGs?

Because the numbers from the industry don't match up with the poll.  The MMO's that have the most solo/casual non group content are far and away the most popular.  And in most of those less than 20% of the player base participates in any group content unless there is some kind of LFG tool that takes all of the work out of it.  Thus the antisocial grouper.  Back when you had to actually communicate with people to form a group a whole hell of a lot of people complained about it, and very few actually did it.

Because people play these games for combat, and gameplay, not waiting around to chat with others.

Thus supporting my contention of them being antisocial groupers.

nah ... i prefer Diablo-ish top down combat. In fact, it is much easy to combat a horde of baddies that way, then a true 3D system.

The best Marvel RPGs .. marvel ultimate alliance 1 & 2, The xmen legend games, and marvel heroes are all Diablo-ish, not for no reasons.

Hi,

What do you think? Would it be possible to let an independent studio develop EQ3 with a kickstarter campaign? I guess all we EQ Fans want is a true EQ3 game. All Smed has to do is sell a license right?

Oh man I would give them alot of money just to have a true EQ Successor with tabtargeting and trinity.... :-D You see how much fame project 99 got?!

I think ....

putting money into wishful thinking when there is no guarantee of anything? Better you than me. I don't mind if other people put money into a pipeline, but that is just not for me.

If the KS fails, i will have something to make fun of. If it is successful, then may be i will consider to give it a try if it sounds fun. Either way, I will be entertained.
