Done it all before and to be honest, i don't feel the need to do it all again until Guild Wars 3...then 4, then 5 comes out, all with more polish, a few new features and fancy hats. Im not sure..maybe its a matter of perspective?  I never felt the rails on me.  Yes content is level gated but on my level 44, I barely ever felt "On rails"  I was just exploring around as I would in Fallout or Skyrim. And I actually enjoyed exploring GW2 more than I did in skyrim, which was really just pretty dead outside the towns. Heck I didnt even notice I was halfway done with the whole thing and I only really explored level 1-20ish areas and still have a TON of places to go around and explore.

My friends who were too used to the rails and grind didnt enjoy it as much though.  They just wanted the fastest way to level up.  Maybe you have the same perspective as them? o.O Heck I have one of my chars reach level 20 without ever so much as doing a dynamic event or heart quest.  Just gathering and crafting o.O  Its the only mmo Ive played where I can play the game the same way as I would in Fallout, TES, or GTA/SR and actually enjoy without being left behind by my friends.

I think my main concern is beyond all that. I.e. WoW in the old days, level 1-60 great, then grind. The only MMOs in history that haven't had some pointless grind for gear at end game are the sandboxes. Which i dislike, as i've outgrown all that and want a deeper thing to sink my time into. I'm enjoying Diablo III after just getting it,but i'm very aware of the game it is.

I love exploring also, especially finding nice vistas and new areas, i'm very into atmosphere. But i just was unsure what would keep me beyond level cap other than the gear treadmill in other games, as i don't know personally from experience.

Originally posted by slowpoke68 The most fun I have had playing an MMO over the last couple of years was playing on the EQ1 time lock progression server.  Got in on launch day...found a group of people, went some where, and killed mobs together.  We actually chatted and socialized while doing it.  No worrying about what quest everyone had and what step they were on, and you didn't see people running by ignoring each other because they were so caught up in whatever solo goal they were working on.  People actually went out of their way to group.  As a result you actually saw a community forming. Had a blast for about a month, then SOE had the massive server hack problem, and by the time the servers came back up I got busy irl and never went back, Anyway, my point is, will we ever see this game design again?  Every MMO since WoW seems to be a leveling experience of running around solo and occasionally grouping to do whatever instance happens to be on level.  No real need to interact with others except for end game raiding.
Isn't that why you join a guild? I'm sorry but the social expect of gaming I'm just not into. So as far that goes I could really care less. If i wanted to chat with people I would visit a forum like this or hit up a irc channel. The less typing in game the better, most people don't have anything good to say anyways.

If that is the case, is a MMO purely played purely as a pissing contest like FPS games, just in a competitive manner? Without grouping, chat or social aspects, all it is, is a medievil Battlefield 3?

It's clearly a comprehensive list of every single person in the known universe and what games they play.

For the last 150 years Microsoft (in various guises such as the illuminati, the NRA and the free masons) have been secretly implanting a chip into every single child born on the planet to monitor their gaming habits, x-fire simply hacked the code.

You think your belly button is a natural formation? However, recently with gamers girth increasing these chips have receded into the flubber prison, the reliability of the signal from this flab dungeon has become somewhat intermittant, hence why many people question the validity of x-fire numbers.

Haha, so true :)

Every big game release, someone refers to X-Fire numbers and every new game beats the others in numbers. I have never heard of anyone i've played with on planet earth even hearing of this program. I wouldn't have heard of it if not for the people on this forum.

In fact, why would anyone want additional programs running in background hogging resources just to act as a virtual stopwatch and contacts list?

Simply allowing players to solo doesn't make the game solo oriented. You are fighting windmills.

All players are free to play the game the way they want. If it is solo, then so be it.

Alot of these newer players haven't seen how much more rewarding it is.

It's like having a bunch of kids at nursery and locking them all in seperate rooms with some books, not interacting. They will finish all the books, then move onto the next, then the next, until they hit the Class A drugs due to not being fulfilled.

To be honest, after work, i seriously don't want to mess about waiting for groups, hanging around, wasting my time. But the point is, i wouldn't need to in a living online world like before, where those players would always be around, living out their characters, available to go on quests, trade or chat.

Older games gave the option to players to solo if they didn't have time/effort to group. These newer ones don't give the same freedom the other way around and even if they do, there is nothing in place to make it even worthwhile socially, as the tools are as basic as they come.

no, sandboxes that have player made content will never excist again.

UO use to have players who wanted you to farm for them or tame animals or cook, make them weapons or armors in different colors, people would hide treasure chests and maps to find those, it was like a real living world.....UO didnt have npc's back in the days, it was a virtual world where i used to live and "work" or go adventuring or fishing or whatever.

Those worlde will never be created again because alot of people these days want it all spoon fed and get to the max skill asap.

Times i dont think a good sandbox will be made soon. too bad....i miss the ols UO :)

Pretty much what i would like back and why no matter how "cool", "kickass" and "fun" Guild Wars 2 appears to be, the longevity i could get out of such a game would only match that of a single-player RPG.

What's the problem with that? Well, single-player RPGs don't pretend to be anything else, it's done when it's done. MMORPGs just kick the can down the road and try and keep you in with whatever scams they can. For the most part, they are all single-player with a deathmatch and lobby option.

I had a choice a few days ago between Diablo III and Guild Wars 2 - I bought the one that i knew what i was getting into.

From what I can tell, GW2 is the first mass appeal, full featured, AAA level quality, buy to play themepark MMORPG* that has ever been released.  Regardless of how much or little in terms of "new" game mechanics are included, people bought it, played it and are liking it.

Compare this to the last several years of releases, and it looks pretty "special" to me.

* GW1 is a CORPG, so it doesn't count.

But unfortunately, that doesn't appeal to me. Whereas WoW was a themepark novelty, i only wanted to do that crap once, no matter how good they made it in other games. The only game where i could really spend years in would be another SWG, sandbox style game where i can develop a character, with a name that is recognised for being something, not an faceless dummy with a shiney hat.

However, if i felt no new sandbox would ever be released again, i would most certainly be playing this now. As it stands, i don't want to invest time building a character for it to be meaningless grind.

Still too on rails, deathmatch, level and gear grind, pissing contest style game with no longevity if i want to commit time to it. There's just more of the same stuff to do, with it being nicer to look at as you do it.

I think its the Sandbox vs. Theme Park thing again.

GW2 is probably the best you are going to get in terms of a MMORPG. I can't see much more that can be improved now.

The only area for major improvement is in the sandbox classification, with the only big budget game in this area being developed being ArchAge, which isn't even scheduled for release in the West.

So, regardless of opinions, for the next 18 months at least, this is as good as it gets.

If you go into it with that mindset, i think most people would enjoy a game like Guild Wars 2, like i may do when i get it tomorrow. But i know in my mind it's not a MMO 'home', so i don't expect as much.

Agreed, it's an improvement on all aspects before it, with some tweaks and new iterations of things, but in the theme park arena that is already oversaturated with not much head room for revolutionary ideas.

Best theme park the world has or ever will see in an MMO? Could well be, i wouldn't know, but it still wouldn't keep me playing past a couple of months if that is what it is, as at the end of the day, it all just becomes a pissing contest at end game. You aren't working towards anything, developing anything, creating anything, establishing a community, town, project, shop, idea. You are just grinding for gear and prestige. For me, i do enough of that in real-life, an alternative world is all i consider now (i.e. sandbox)

My decision to delay trying this game seems to be paying off, although i'm not sure of the game mechanics:

1) Don't have to suffer horrendous lag at early levels
2) Noob areas less crowded
3) emergency patches will have surfaced
4) server issues ironed out
5) Disconnects less occurant
6) No urge to keep up with the masses in terms of level and gear

I may wait until Friday, first week is always a bugger. Wow, i really have matured over these last 10 eyars of MMO gaming haha.

Probably one of the most polished and well-rounded theme parks to date.

Because it is that, i won't be playing it. If i want to grind and compete constantly to get better with others, i can do something called work and get paid for it. I want to immerse myself in another world and do a bit more than hack 'n' slash.

I almost bought it though, as i'm sure it's an excellent game, but a game i couldn't see playing past 3 months like all the rest as i know the longevity consists of just beating up other people to get better clothes. I can do that in single player games without having the treadmill.

and the zoning every five minutes is a bit annoying. City to overflow, overflow to regular map, regular map to storyline, and back and forth.
It's a good game, but these things are annoying.
Ahh excessive zoning and sharding, always kills it for me. That on it's own is often enough for me to step away and not try it, think it's why i didn't even touch the first.

I never played any of the previous Diablo's and nowadays i'm pretty fussy with games, they have to be damn right amazing to keep me playing longer than an hour...i hate wasting my time.

I tried the starter edition and although the game is about a basic as they come, i found i could play it with some music pumping and a few beers. So i bought it. Nothing more than that really, it's a game thats persistant, has progression, challenging supposedly and nice to look at, but also something i can jump in and out of. For those reasons, i like it, but as a game it really isn't anything special.

I pay a significant amount of my wages in tax to 'help' those who can't be bothered to work. I pay VAT on everything i buy on top of that. In fact, i get ripped off on a daily basis in the UK. Chances are the box is already more expensive here than the rest of planet Earth.

So, as for giving a company extra money after i have bought their product, on the off chance they messed up their business plan. Nah. In fact, my role here is to get the most entertainment for the smallest expense possible, as any company worth their salt will make it their priority to get most profit from their product. If a company comes across sweating blood for their customers, it is because they genuinely want it to become a 'financial' success. The longer it keeps running, the longer they keep their jobs and overtime.

If they can't deliver a product customers enjoy, that's not our responsibility. I won't get a supermodel to sit on my face just because i tried really hard. The fact is i would be trying hard to get her to sit on my face, so it would be a selfish act...just like a company trying really hard to make a good product, it's not so they can cure disease with profit margins.

So given the choice, i would kick them in the nuts and run away with a free copy and the shirt off their backs.

Man, i swear i've only had 3 cans, nothing on TV though and GW2 isn't out yet :)

lucas can do whatever he likes with star wars, it's his baby.
I think he/she was suggesting that ea/bioware were not likely to agree to those terms even if it meant using a different ip.  No other mmo developer has agreed to allow somone else to make a competing product at the same time they were developing their own.

Yeh, infact it's standard for almost all contracts of this type in existence unless they're mugs. What makes it harder to believe is 2010, meaning the performance get-out wouldn't click in.

Only way is if it's a different format, like mobile, browser, MMORTS, etc.

This i could see, but my god it would suck. But yeh it would have to be no competition in a completely different format.

Are Lucas allowed to sell the rights for a Star Wars MMO to Bioware and Paradox at the ame time? Cant see it.

Yeh that could be the case, but very few bushes i can collect from even out in wilderness. wierd.

One annoying thing that will take getting used to is the entire world looks identical with no standout features at all, unless that comes later.

Levelling my skills now and have just got hiking.

It's difficult, but i remember games like Star Wars galaxies having this exact level of learning curve.

However...Blackberries, why the hell can't i pick them?!
