I had exactly this P&P-feeling in a computer game and it was even better!

But it was no MMO. In Neverwinter Nights 2, it´s possible to play with a group of friends (it doesn´t matter, if you know them in real life or not) on your own server. You can invent the story, the DM is able to control the environment ,add quests or whatever you want. Additionally you have a great grafical environment, which makes it much easier to get involved in the story.

This way it is really better than playing around a table! You even can play with friends, who do not live in the same city!

I think, good RP is possible also in a MMORPG. But the trend goes to bigger game environments and more players on one server. I don´t think, this is good for RP in computer games. Community is important for RPers and in a smaller game world with less people on a server it is much easier to create a community.

Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 definitly are the best options for role-players at the moment. I prefer NWN 2 because of the grafics.

RP on such a server is much much better than in any MMO. Because everybody role-plays e.g. it´s no problem to play an evil and not always friendly character (while the players stay good friends) without getting in trouble with a non-role-player, who takes this as an offence.

And yes, RP is addictive and a lot of fun!

I agree with kok_lily! I´d like to have a peaceful and more friendly behavior among the payers (does´nt mean no fighting). If it will be a mulitplayer game, I´d wish for moderated chats. It´s possible in many chatrooms to moderate them, why not in an MMO?

I also would like to be able to reach something in the game, without fighting. It should be possible to get a job and this job should not be just to reapair your sword. I´d like to become a famous tailor, good farmer or whatever, without having to fight to level up. And I want to be able to buy a nice house with the money and a horse.

The horses in Oblivion IV are a little bit boring. I´d also like to see better horses. More naturally looking and more different colours. There is a modder, who made better horses for Oblivion IV. I forgot his name, but the mod is on the IGN vault. I´d like to see this horses in the game.

Also more clothes would be nice. I mean clothes, not armour.

And yes, I am female and really would like to see a game with less fighting, really good horses and more clothes :D.

My dream, is to one day put the RP back into the MMO.  But not in the traditional sense.  I don't want to make the game like it used to be made, where the players make their own content, and the game just facilitates the locale.  I want the game to facilitate the story too, and for the game to keep track of the story.

Why should players not create their own content? That´s why the older games where better suited for RP than the newer ones. A team of developers will never be able to offer as much content than 5000 creative players can. And it´s big big fun to be creative!

In the older games you had to be creative, but you also had the chance to be creative instead of just consuming what others did. I miss this aspect a lot nowadays. I´d like to have such a game, just with newer grafics.

I think those morons are just very stupid people and they know it ! If someone just does not like to role-play, well that´s o.k. That´s just a different taste. But why should anyone want to ruin a game for others? Why do they care for role-players at all instead of just playing the game?

There is only one reason, I can think of - jealousy.

Those people are stupid and they think, role-players are more intelligent and more creative. I don´t think role-players really are more intelligent, but for those people RPers represent everything, they cannot be themselfs. To role-play one has to read books or at least reading books helps a lot in developing an RP-character. Those people are not able to concentrate on a book for even half an hour. They really have some shortcomings and they know it! They hate role-players for being everything, they can not be.

It´s a very sad situation!

People are not the same and life would be very boring if they were :D.

I love role-playing not because I want to be a different person in real life. I love it, because it gives me the chance to develop different personalities. You could say like a writer, who develops the characters in his novel. He has to think about this person, what he would do in this or that case. I like to think about such things. I am very interested in people and their personality. I also like reading books, which are more about characters than about action.

Only role-playing is much more fun, then writing a book. You do it with others and you never know, what will happen in the next minute or how the others will react. Role-playing really is big fun to me :).

The basics of roleplaying are very simple and easy to understand and they are the same, no matter what kind of game you play or what else you think about roleplaying:

1) Separate between yourself and the character you are playing! Then give the character a personality which is different of your own and play this ROLE whenever you are in the game.

In fact it´s as simple as this! Maybe you could add:

2) When you create and develop your character, think of the setting you are playing in and don´t destroy it.

3) Also don´t forget to think about your fellow players. You should not destroy their fun by creating an overly egoistic character.

But this very simple things seem to much to ask of most people nowadays. I don´t play MMOs anymore. Rather play Neverwinter Nights 2 on an RP-shard.

@Anzie,

role-players don´t take the game to seriously. It´s just a game to them. But´role-playing is a different way to play a game. For me numbers, levels, gear are very boring. I am simply not interested in such things. Role-playing for me means to develop the personality of a character (not his level), e.g. like a writer would. This is great fun to do in my eyes.

MMOs focus on numbers only. I think, thats boring! O.k., there is nothing wrong with playing a game like this, but to some of us, it´s boring.

By the way if my character has a marriage in a game, it´s just fun to play this scene! In real life I am already married and would not want to have anyone else besides my husband :D.

Yes, it´s not possible to RP anymore in MMOs.

I suggest you try Neverwinter Nights 2 role-playing-servers. It´s no MMO, but it´s a great online game. The servers are private (but absolutly legal) projects and the makers of the so called persistant worlds put alot of ideas, effort, money in their projects to make them a beautiful role-playing opportunity for everybody.

It´s not an MMO, but 3D grafics and much better then text based games. The only problem is, there are to few players who know about the persistant worlds. Neverwinter Nights 2 has great role-play, but needs more players!

I think that's really well said.  There is a problem though:  What about the inexperienced role player who wants to roleplay something godly, or something outside of the settings?  That's the reason most roleplayers will level and level and level... because the character they want to be is the best fighter in the world, or the most powerful mage, or the whatever.

And what if the settings of the game, the thing that tells us who we are and what we're doing, tells us that we're nobodies when we start to play?  If you were to enter the game as a somebody, then you would be in defiance of the settings.  You wouldn't be playing the game as it's meant to be played.

It's a difficult question...

I guess it´s mostly low self-esteem of the player, if he wants to be the best fighter, richest character of the server or whatever. You can´t compensate with money and/or level for a lack of personality. This does not work in real life and it does not work in MMOs.

If you have a strong personality, you always will be SOMEBODY. Even a level 1 character can be known by most players of a server. I think, e.g. of the role-played waitress of a pub. E.g. a waitress with humor, who makes all her guests laugh ...

Problem is, it´s player-skill, what is necessary here! No one without the skill can role-play such a character. A beginner has to learn, how to do it. Leveling works automatically. Even the most stupid players can reach max level, just be investing a lot of time. No effort is needed!

People are lazy! They prefer to give their characters a uber sword instead of a personality, because role-playing the personality is much more difficult.

Yes, an online version of the settlers (of course I own the single player version :D) would be great! But it should not be the way, one plays against others. I´d rather role-play one of the settlers, work as a woodcrafter, fisherwoman or whatever and add to the success of the commuity as a whole.

To WoW: I have tried it and I hate it! Not the game itself, that´s boring, but role-playing would be possible. But it has the worst community of all the games, I tried. I got insulted, laughed at, may char got sexually offended and every single role-playing event we tried to do was disturbed by some crazy idiots.

It was almost the same in LoTRo. In europe there are special role-playing servers and the situation is somewhat better than in WoW. But still there are to many idiots and to less is done about them.

No, I will never ever spend money on such lousy support for role-players! I think, if people had more proud and would not pay for almost any bullshit, just to be able to play online, developers would have to think about better games and better support. But of course, as long as we pay for the lousy games, there is no reason for them to think about better ones!

The problem is, all online games have more or less the same kind of content. That´s fine for people who like it of course and therefore nothing is wrong with this games. The problem is, there are no other online games for people, who enjoy a different kind of playstyle. Game developers should be a little more creative. There are so many different kinds of single-player games. Why not bring more different gaming principles online?

What I miss is a game without being forced to play the role of a hero, who is constantly slaughtering boring monsters and gathering items.

For example the idea of game like A Tale in the Desert is great! Solving a task like building cities and in the end maybe even a pyramid together with others is very interesting an a lot of fun in my eyes! And yes, I like to play single-player strategy games a lot, like e.g. Ceasar IV. What I like here is buidling cities and having a healthy economy. By the way, this games have a lot of players. They are by far no niche products!

So why is there only one such MMO (with very very bad grafics!) and why are there so many many "monster slaying" MMOs? It would be possible to have a lot of different settings (e.g. medieval, having to build a castle, ancient Rome, science fiction ...).

What I think: The old argument between role-players and non-role-players often is an argument between action players and non-action-players as well (all combinations are possible, like e.g. action-role-player or non-action-non-role-player). I´d call myself a non-action-role-player.

In the usual kind of game for players like me, there is nothing to do. Only if we get a glimpse of RP sometimes, we are happy. But this is so rare, it is not worth paying for and it´s to much wasted time to run through the otherwise boring game worlds, to look for it.

I think, developers forget about millions of potential players, who enjoy cooperative building or problem solving more than action and fighting!

Yes, I did exactly what Ceallach says. I was looking for an MMO for a while, which suits my taste. I found, there is none. All of them are just stupid and very boring level and item hunting games. I don´t know, what is wrong with people and why they spend money on this sort of game for more than just a view days. In the beginning it´s nice, to watch the grafics, if they are good. But  what, when you have ssen them? Is it really fun to someone, to get Ubersword number 100 and after this, number 101?

I love to play with other people (especially role-play with other people), but I do not like, what you have to do in the such games besides talking.

Now I don´t try it anymore. I just quit playing MMOs. I am sorry for the people, but I don´t miss the games at all :D.

Darkfall is a game with very interesting features. But I remember, they said on the forums, there will be no support for RP. Not even RP-server or anything. They very clearly focus on action-pvp players and not on role-players. I don´t think the game will be much better than AoC. I also think they have a problem now :D. Because they focus on the same kind of players as AoC does, they can´t start their game in the near future. They have to wait until many people get bored by AoC already and are looking for a new game again.

There is almost no role-playing in AoC. It´s a game for people, who want fast action and a lot of blood. It could be an interesting game, but what I have seen so far, it will get a terrible community.

If you find the game you are looking for, please let me know. I will join you there at once!

I think it´s one of the developers myths. Of course it would work, because not all the people interested in games are just stupid and dependent on the devs ideas. Only most players nowadays are used to such linear level games, because all the games are like this.

And of course a game gets the players it is developed for.  People who do not like it, don´t play it. There are many more people in this world, who do NOT play games like WoW than there are actual gamers. Most own a computer and internet connection. Do the devs ever ask themselfs, why those people don´t play their games :D?

I think people play games, just as they live their lifes. Running to reach max level and get a lot of money as quickly as possible.

Status symbols have become more important than family, friendship and/or enjoyment of life. Many people I know, have large houses and drive big cars. But they are almost never at home (because they work so much to get the money for the house), don´t talk to each other much and spent their time being angry about gas prices :D.

It´s almost as if they are afraid to calm down, stop running and just start to enjoy their lifes. They delay fun and say to themself: "If I have this and that, I will start to have fun." As soon as they have it, they want something else :D. This way fun will never come!

I prefer to have less stuff, but more time to enjoy, what I have :). And games I play the same way. But to me, MMOs are boring, because usually there is no one, who takes a seat in the pub with me. Just as it is in real life, everybody is in a hurry.

I don´t like quests in MMOs at all. I would prefer some kind of virtual world, where your character just lives, has a job, goes to the pub ... Not like second life, but a medieval or fantasy world and role-played or at least with a rp-server. Of course it should be possible to do some adventuring, but one should not have to do it, to level a character. I don´t like this enforced adventuring.

5/10/08 9:02 AM

There is no MMORPG, which is interesting to people like us. I also love to role-play non-adventurers or fighters. No chance in any MMO! I´d suggest, you try Neverwinter Nights 2. It´s also a combat-focused game. But it comes with a toolset for the fans to create their own online game worlds. Of course those are much smaller than a MMO. But it´s big fun! There are game worlds for almost every taste from PvP, questing, to just social meeting or hardcore RP. Some of them have an adult rating too. You might find there, what you are looking for. If not, you can always find other people with the same interests and start your own game.

In fact I hope for a game like Neverwinter Nights 2 - only with more people (but also not to many - I guess 500 would be more than enough) to play on a server. And this game should be developed as a multiplayer game, not as single-player with multiplayer-function. Meaning it should have not this separated areas, but an relativly open game world.

What I like in NWN2 is the toolset and the DM toolset. This way fans can develop and administer their own gameworlds. That´s just great. Some of the fans works are really very professional. Even better, than what the payed staff did :D. And there are projects for almost every play style and all tasts. You can find everything you are looking for. And if you don´t find it - just get a team together, construct your own module, rent a server and do whatever you want.
