I've noticed in the last hour or so since the video was released that no one is using the term "Vaporware" anymore.

So, I'm guessing that you all now believe there is a game, and have moved on to phase II.

Phase I - Call Darkfall "Vaporware".

Phase II - Call any video/screenshots and reviews "trash", "worst ever", (et al.). Announce to the world that no one will play it.

Phase III - When open beta arrives, focus on all the bugs. Once again, announce that the game is "fail" and will never last.

Phase IV - When game goes live, use every opportunity to complain about crashes, bugs, late fixes, etc. Once again announce that the game will crash.

who cares? this isn't fucking 1992 anymore. I'am sure you'll be happy playing Darkfall with the other 100 people because after watching that video that's the total amount that's going to be playing.

That shit looks like EQ1

Who cares? Obviously you do. Otherwise you wouldn't be here in a Darkfall thread.

About graphics. Graphics is the least of my considerations towards playing a game. If it runs smooth and I like the game mechanics, that's all I need.
Why worry about graphics, anyhow. You can update graphics as you go. But when a game is based on faulty mechanics, you're pretty much stuck within the framework.

Where do I buy the FanBoi blinders you have?

You can convince yourself as much as you like, but if -THAT- is anywhere near what is released then this game is going to fail so fast you'll hear a pop as the air rushes to fill the vacuum it leaves behind.

You can probably buy the FanBoi blinders at the same store you found your Troll blinders, just on another aisle.

You really have no clue. You see, I'll play a MUD game, all text, before I play some of these other games. Graphics really don't mean anything to me.

And on a side note, if I don't like what I get out of Darkfall, I'll drop them like a bad habit. If I'm a FanBoi, then you'd really hate me as a Troll, flaming away.

Me personally?

I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worst. If it comes out, awesome. If it doesn't, oh well - I didn't lose any money. Know what I mean?

Until then i use the right given to me by the internet gods and "call bullshit".

Sorry, you are still arguing that Darkfall is not  a HOAX.

Darkfall can not only be a real game, but it can actually release and still be VAporware. So you might want to check your midichlorian count there young Jedi.

Vaporware:

Falls short of expectations

This category refers particularly to products that may not be inherently flawed or defective, but rather fail to fulfill the high expectations of the consumers who have been subjected to aggressive marketing campaigns and constant hype from either the company itself or the media who reported about it in the period leading to release. Delays on such products have been known to inflate to months and even years, creating often unrealistic expectations of the final version once it eventually reaches store shelves.

The biggest example of this is the computer game Daikatana, which was announced in 1997 but did not ship until 2000. Many who had waited felt the gameplay was disappointing. Ultima IX was released to savage reviews in 1999, due to numerous bugs, unbalanced gameplay and high system requirements.

Based on this definition of, Age of Conan, WAR...hell, even World of Warcraft are Vaporware. I have yet to see any game live up to expectations.

I don't subscribe to this low-minded definition. It's too ignorant and dismissive. Vaporware, in my opinion, is software or a set of ideas that never come to fruition.

Please, give up. You're making a fool of yourself now.

Come on guys.. I want this game to come out and I want it to work..

But lets look at the facts:

1. No leaked beta info.  I know it's not a US game, and maybe if you leak a beta you get murdered or something, but .. well people push limits.

2.  Who's actually going to be carrying this game?  Darkfall hasn't authorized any pre-orders.   Find me one other game that's supposed to release this year that can't be pre-ordered.

3. Supposedly feature complete, but didn't show all that many features in the video.  I know it's a PvP game, that's the main focus, but don't say you have more features but only show 1 or 3...

4. Nobody in beta.  Well, no one talking about it.  One thing the PvP community is known for is cheating.  Anything to gain an advantage of the opponent is good.  Duping, super jumping, teleporting.. anything.  With the lack of Beta information means .. even if they start an open beta (and by open, I mean upping the beta to 20k people) enough to break it and cheat.. no everything or anything possible.  Well, 3 months isn't enough time.

I'm not a "this is vaporware" kind of guy, I'm just looking at the facts.  I think The Darkfall Team made a mistake by saying it's releasing this year (to build hype).. They should have just announced when they started open beta.  Until then, Darkfall is just a dream that.. well.. won't be out this year.

And FLAME ON, as I know the unrealistic DARKFALL ground will jump on how much info is out there.. and How I'm completely full of it.. But.. eh..

I would just tell you to calm down. Relax. If it comes out on time....hurah, if it never comes out....then there's less stuff for us to complain about.

First, i orderd a collectors edition of WAR, i been waiting for the games since i saw it 2 years ago. i played guild wars then wow..tried some of the free to play which i dont like. im a RPG type of guy..and i love pvp.

first..i wana compare it to the game which was so addictive to me...wow

1.Dungeon..tho they have dungeon in war...i tried the sewer...but there is no sense of strategy at all. All you have to do is let the tank lure, heal it and whack mob. While in heroic dungeon in wow..there is a sense of team play..we even use ventrillo just for the sake of coordination..CC wise.U also need a strategy to kill boses. Raid is even harder.

2.Economy..war has none..wow has a lot

3.laggy..everytime a warpriest cast a spell buff.it lags..and other buff as well.

4.Farming..ok this one i hate so much..but but...wow makes farming addictive...everytime i log in..all i want is get more money.get better gears. do many heroics over and over just to get that drop item. tho i hate it so much..but once u get the item u want..u feel so proud.a sense of accomplisment. wow did some psycological thing on farming which make it addictive even tho ppol hate farming..but still they do it.

5. Skills...come on....i hate war skills..i mean the execution of skill is just not right. someone mention that wow skills is like tetris..he is exactly right..the feeling of it just make it addictive.

i played wow for 1 yr..and i got bored..but in war..i played it about 2weeks..now im bored.

war pvp is awesome..the idea of rvr is nice. but if its the only reason for playing war...then it gets borring easy...

Based on your post, a reader would think that WAR and WOW have been equally been available for the same amount of time. But actually, we know that's not true. WAR has only been out for a month, and WOW has been out for few years.

Do you see the error in your judgement now?

Well I guess they just couldn't keep enough subscribers. I hear they will be shutting down the servers soon. With AOC and Warhammer out WOW never had a chance.

I love Warhammer but I am also looking forward to WOTLK. This is going to be one fun Winter!!!!

I agree brewing for many years.. about SIX years, ever since Clinton left office to be exact so that last 6yrs or so while the Bushies ran things with a Repub congress and Repub president...

no, deregulation of Wall Street (Phil Gramm) and corporate America had nothing to do with the last 6-7 yrs of Republican rule..

neither did two wars that cost over 1 Billion dollars, and still counting (which NO one needed).

While I agree that Dems should have done something when they just got congress back less than 2yrs ago.. its tough to reverse 6 yrs of Republican mess in that short amount of time while robber barons ripped off the country.

But ill try and stop on topic after this "side note". Still dont think you can judge any MMO (Funcom included) solely on stock price in this economy. (so Eben, we agree on something)

Unbelieveably ignorant. Please go to a political trolling forum before you make a fool out of yourself.

Funcom is suffering from the very point of the article. Their failure or success is based on one product. It has nothing to do with your opinion of the economy. Blaming Bush, a political party, or any single person or small group is ridiculous and moronic. Funcom is traded in Oslo, not in the US. I promise you that the stock price of an online computer game is not affected by the mortgage-housing freefall.

For god's sake...go to college and get a degree before you humiliate yourself.

I just want to add to my original post for the sake of making a point.

I'm no Darkfall fanboi. If it comes out, great. If it doesn't come out. Oh well. But I can't remember the number of times people called Darkfall "Vaporware". And I was laughing the other day because people were blasting DF because the video didn't come out early enough.

Look, I don't know if the game is going to actually come out. It appears that "something" is on the horizon. My definition of Vaporware is a game that ultimately does not release. Perhaps they started it and couldn't finish it, or perhaps they never had code at all. Either way, Darkfall could still end up as Vaporware.

But to all you who hate a game you never played....I just don't understand the anger. So, things are moving along, and now you don't want to admit you might be wrong. Instead, I'm watching you all turn from "vaporware" to "crapware". I think you are making the same mistake. Once again, you really don't know anything to make a respectable judgement. It appears that you are just angry with the Darkfall creators.

On a side note, I'm amused how many people are calling it crapware because of graphics (et al). I would like to remind you that Age of Conan had incredible graphics...and its not doing so well. According to my experiences, graphics is only the initial 'draw' to the game. Once you start playing, you don't pay attention to them anymore. Ultimately, all I'm concerned about is a game that has good mechanics and support. Hell, I would enjoy a good MUD if it was well done.

Anyhow, this is my stake, my opinion, on Darkfall. I'm hoping for a well done game. That's all. Same goes for Warhammer.

Dude, stop arguing with him. Its like a religious cult. They fail to see reason and no amount of rational explanation to them will lure them away from the very destructive thing they embrace. Its sad but its true. If Darkfall showed a video of them taking a dump they were scream "SEE NO VAPORWARE!"

It doesnt matter to them and there is no way to talk them out of it. We, as in the rest of us, knows that this company is taking advantage of them. You should feel sorry for them than to be upset or made at them.

Haha, look at him using his last resort!

Seriously though, that is quite ironic to hear from you. A guy, who believes a game to definitely be vapor, after seeing a 20 minute game play video.

Prove to me that is game play footage. Where's the UI? Who played it. Did you play it? Who was controlling the characters.

Until its officially on the market generating sales, this is Vaperwa

re. Having the developers posting it on youtube and other sites does not prove anything. Anyone can make a video like that given enough spare time in a college computer lab.

It may be real, who knows, but proof to me that it is real. Prove to me a bunch of developers were playing it ingame. Prove it. And just dont say "well, you saw the 20 minute video!!"

Ive seen a lot of 20 minute videos of video games that never came to be. Here's one example

http://feature.mmosite.com/ageofmourning/

Hey Enigma,

I typically agree with your philosophy and ideas, but I'm wondering why you think they'd go to all this trouble to make vaporware. It just doesn't seem logical.

On a side note, I'll be happy if Darkfall delivers without great graphics. Graphics are just eye-candy to me and quickly fall by the wayside.

For all you people who cried "vaporware", I was wondering if you are preparing to apologize. Feel free to start here in this thread.

Turn it into a single player RPG.  Remember how fun 1-20 was? Awesome fun right? How much did you group or even talk to others in that range? But it was damn fun was it not?  I loved the game 1-20. 20-30 was somewhat okay, afterwards just blah

Well expand that greatness higher then lvl 20, allow the single player to lead and control npc keep sieges. Allow the single player to murder and be hunted by bounty hunter NPC. The PvP ascpects of this game are fundamentally flawed. I say salvage it by turning it into an offline game. It would be easy to play good vs evil. The lands are already setup for it. The story is all there. Maybe I want the powers of Acheron to flow though me to be a vessel of evil destruction? Maybe I want to be a general in conan's army.

Basically make this game play somewhat like Oblivion without all the horrible slowness and grindyness of that game. Oblivion was a horrible min/max stats slow as can be game - don't want anyone to think I liked it. I want awesome action, great stories, voice over, video clips.

It's not an MMO if you make it single player.

I suggest throwing out the high graphic requirements. Make it a game that can handle many people in an instance. By default, you will less instancing. The areas will seem more alive. Then, merge what's left of the servers.

Create a living world. Let people with regular computers systems have access to the game.

By far the most utterly ridiculous words on these Darkfall forum threads is being repeated by the fans over and over and over, and it's not only wrong at so many levels, but absolutely ridiculous to even speak of.

What I am talking about is the constant comparisons of this game to Funcoms' Age of Conan mmo.

How in the hell can you even begin to compare this game or hoax or whatever it is to an mmo that has actually released, seen success, and is up, running, and playable?

...And furthermore, the faith you fans have to actually trash Age of Conan constantly like you know that this POS game is gonna blow Age of Conan away.  What proof do you have that Darkfall will even ever release first of all?  And if it does, how do you know that it won't be more along the lines of Mourning or Dark and Light?  How do you know it will even be as good as Dark and Light?  I'd call it a major success if it releases and has as much success and runs as smoothly as Dark and Light did when it released, and if that happened, then trashing Age of Conan would certainly make a bigtime fool out of you.

I am betting now that Age of Conan has seen 5000% more success that Darkfall ever will, and that Darkfall, even if released, will NEVER EVER run as good as Age of Conan even on AOCs worst day.

I am not saying that Age of Conan is a great game, but compared to what we have with Darkfall right now, Age of Conan is so far ahead, it's not even comparable.  Once Darkfall actually releases, then we will make comparisons.

So you fans keep telling yourself that Darkfall is a billion times better then Age of Conan with absolutely nothing to back it up except your wildest fantasies.  I feel bad for you when something they call "reality" hits you upside the head if/when this POS game actually does release.

Betting that AoC has a 5000% more success than a game that is not out seems ridiculous to me. Basically, you are angry ....and doing the same thing that you are complaining about. It's one thing to be angry about Darkfall fans who are speculating that their game will be greater than AoC. But it's hypocrisy when you speculate that AoC is greater than Darkfall for the same reason.

You need to relax.

One thing I have been monitoring is how the perception of Darkfall has changed. For a long time, people who were upset called it "Vaporware" and said it wouldn't come out. I've noticed that people are now changing their wording....and saying "IF" it comes out....or "WHEN" it comes out.

For awhile people have been hating on Darkfall while the rest of us are simply waiting to see how things go. Here is my solution for those people who are angry that the product hasn't been released.

For those of you believe Darkfall is Vaporware, simply pretend that Darkfall was never announced. That way you don't have to be angry about something that you never controlled in the first place.  If...one day....a game comes out named Darkfall, then you can just be surprised and excited to play something new.

If it never comes out....no harm/no foul. Less stress for you.

Hey there,

I've been checking out CoH/CoV and unable to log in. This morning, 07/09/2008, there was server maintenence. According to the webstie, the servers are now up.

The forums are down, the account admin site is down, everything is down except main webstie, yet the server status webpage says they are operating.

Is anyone currently playing CoX at this time? Or are you having difficulties as I am?

First off, graphics don't mean that much to me. If the game has good mechanics, that will suffice.

I voted for Champions Online. I respect the poll, but it's not entirely fair to write off City of Heroes when we really don't know what the CO product is yet.

I suppose the reasons are as follows:

1. The Makers of CoH ARE the ones making CO, therefore I believe they create this game with ideas that will circumvent problems they had to deal with in CoH.

2. CoH is plagued with a series of problems that I believe they will never truly overcome. Basically, they refuse to give credence to PvP. CO has an opportunity to gather this crowd.

3. Fully open choices on powers and abilities is far superior to class or archetype based systems.

Given all this, Champions Online can still fail. And to be fair, we can't judge CO against CoH immediately. We can compare the CO release to the CoH release, I suppose. But to be consistent, we'll have to let CO get up and run with it...before we can adequately compare it to CoH, which has been around for 4 years and been able to polish itself off.

A quick study of the chart shows that in correlation to its releases, something in Jan of 2007 and something in Jan of 2008 causes their numbers to spike.

Obviously, the Jan 2007 data corresponds to "The Burning Crusade".

I am not currently playing WoW, so I am currently unaware what happened in January of this year.

On a side note, some of the drop off may be related to economic issues.

And finally, WoW seems to be building a heavy "front end" position for their market. I say this because it appears that they target January and February for their "subscriber spike" and anticipate a drop off all the way through Christmas. NOT ironically, Wrath of the Lich King is slotted for November.

...why...that's just in time for a January subscriber spike.
