I've noticed in the last hour or so since the video was released that no one is using the term "Vaporware" anymore. So, I'm guessing that you all now believe there is a game, and have moved on to phase II.
Phase I - Call Darkfall "Vaporware". Phase II - Call any video/screenshots and reviews "trash", "worst ever", (et al.). Announce to the world that no one will play it. Phase III - When open beta arrives, focus on all the bugs. Once again, announce that the game is "fail" and will never last. Phase IV - When game goes live, use every opportunity to complain about crashes, bugs, late fixes, etc. Once again announce that the game will crash.

Who cares? Obviously you do. Otherwise you wouldn't be here in a Darkfall thread. |

And on a side note, if I don't like what I get out of Darkfall, I'll drop them like a bad habit. If I'm a FanBoi, then you'd really hate me as a Troll, flaming away. |

Pretty sure I'm looking at the new footage. Seems to run smoothly. Some of the animations are a little weird to look at right now. The woman ran kinda weird. About graphics. Graphics is the least of my considerations towards playing a game. If it runs smooth and I like the game mechanics, that's all I need. Why worry about graphics, anyhow. You can update graphics as you go. But when a game is based on faulty mechanics, you're pretty much stuck within the framework. |

Why do people have so much confidence in darkfall?
General Discussion « Darkfall 11/26/08 8:42:26 AM
Me personally? I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worst. If it comes out, awesome. If it doesn't, oh well - I didn't lose any money. Know what I mean? |

Darkfall can not only be a real game, but it can actually release and still be VAporware. So you might want to check your midichlorian count there young Jedi. Falls short of expectations This category refers particularly to products that may not be inherently flawed or defective, but rather fail to fulfill the high expectations of the consumers who have been subjected to aggressive marketing campaigns and constant hype from either the company itself or the media who reported about it in the period leading to release. Delays on such products have been known to inflate to months and even years, creating often unrealistic expectations of the final version once it eventually reaches store shelves. The biggest example of this is the computer game Daikatana, which was announced in 1997 but did not ship until 2000. Many who had waited felt the gameplay was disappointing. Ultima IX was released to savage reviews in 1999, due to numerous bugs, unbalanced gameplay and high system requirements.
Based on this definition of, Age of Conan, WAR...hell, even World of Warcraft are Vaporware. I have yet to see any game live up to expectations. I don't subscribe to this low-minded definition. It's too ignorant and dismissive. Vaporware, in my opinion, is software or a set of ideas that never come to fruition. Please, give up. You're making a fool of yourself now. |

Their failure or success is based on one product. It has nothing to do with your opinion of the economy. Blaming Bush, a political party, or any single person or small group is ridiculous and moronic. Funcom is traded in Oslo, not in the US. I promise you that the stock price of an online computer game is not affected by the mortgage-housing freefall. For god's sake...go to college and get a degree before you humiliate yourself. |

The Official: "I apologize about Darkfall" Thread
General Discussion « Darkfall 8/30/08 4:43:32 PM
I just want to add to my original post for the sake of making a point. I'm no Darkfall fanboi. If it comes out, great. If it doesn't come out. Oh well. But I can't remember the number of times people called Darkfall "Vaporware". And I was laughing the other day because people were blasting DF because the video didn't come out early enough. Look, I don't know if the game is going to actually come out. It appears that "something" is on the horizon. My definition of Vaporware is a game that ultimately does not release. Perhaps they started it and couldn't finish it, or perhaps they never had code at all. Either way, Darkfall could still end up as Vaporware. But to all you who hate a game you never played....I just don't understand the anger. So, things are moving along, and now you don't want to admit you might be wrong. Instead, I'm watching you all turn from "vaporware" to "crapware". I think you are making the same mistake. Once again, you really don't know anything to make a respectable judgement. It appears that you are just angry with the Darkfall creators. On a side note, I'm amused how many people are calling it crapware because of graphics (et al). I would like to remind you that Age of Conan had incredible graphics...and its not doing so well. According to my experiences, graphics is only the initial 'draw' to the game. Once you start playing, you don't pay attention to them anymore. Ultimately, all I'm concerned about is a game that has good mechanics and support. Hell, I would enjoy a good MUD if it was well done. Anyhow, this is my stake, my opinion, on Darkfall. I'm hoping for a well done game. That's all. Same goes for Warhammer. |

Anyone can make a video like that given enough spare time in a college computer lab. It may be real, who knows, but proof to me that it is real. Prove to me a bunch of developers were playing it ingame. Prove it. And just dont say "well, you saw the 20 minute video!!" Ive seen a lot of 20 minute videos of video games that never came to be. Here's one example http://feature.mmosite.com/ageofmourning/
Hey Enigma, I typically agree with your philosophy and ideas, but I'm wondering why you think they'd go to all this trouble to make vaporware. It just doesn't seem logical. On a side note, I'll be happy if Darkfall delivers without great graphics. Graphics are just eye-candy to me and quickly fall by the wayside. |

I suggest throwing out the high graphic requirements. Make it a game that can handle many people in an instance. By default, you will less instancing. The areas will seem more alive. Then, merge what's left of the servers. Create a living world. Let people with regular computers systems have access to the game. |

Betting that AoC has a 5000% more success than a game that is not out seems ridiculous to me. Basically, you are angry ....and doing the same thing that you are complaining about. It's one thing to be angry about Darkfall fans who are speculating that their game will be greater than AoC. But it's hypocrisy when you speculate that AoC is greater than Darkfall for the same reason. You need to relax. One thing I have been monitoring is how the perception of Darkfall has changed. For a long time, people who were upset called it "Vaporware" and said it wouldn't come out. I've noticed that people are now changing their wording....and saying "IF" it comes out....or "WHEN" it comes out.

For awhile people have been hating on Darkfall while the rest of us are simply waiting to see how things go. Here is my solution for those people who are angry that the product hasn't been released. For those of you believe Darkfall is Vaporware, simply pretend that Darkfall was never announced. That way you don't have to be angry about something that you never controlled in the first place. If...one day....a game comes out named Darkfall, then you can just be surprised and excited to play something new. If it never comes out....no harm/no foul. Less stress for you.

Quick Post: Is CoX truly up and running?
Paragon City Hall (General) « City of Heroes 7/09/08 12:10:51 PM
Hey there, I've been checking out CoH/CoV and unable to log in. This morning, 07/09/2008, there was server maintenence. According to the webstie, the servers are now up. The forums are down, the account admin site is down, everything is down except main webstie, yet the server status webpage says they are operating. Is anyone currently playing CoX at this time? Or are you having difficulties as I am? |

First off, graphics don't mean that much to me. If the game has good mechanics, that will suffice. I voted for Champions Online. I respect the poll, but it's not entirely fair to write off City of Heroes when we really don't know what the CO product is yet.
I suppose the reasons are as follows: 1. The Makers of CoH ARE the ones making CO, therefore I believe they create this game with ideas that will circumvent problems they had to deal with in CoH. 2. CoH is plagued with a series of problems that I believe they will never truly overcome. Basically, they refuse to give credence to PvP. CO has an opportunity to gather this crowd. 3. Fully open choices on powers and abilities is far superior to class or archetype based systems.
Given all this, Champions Online can still fail. And to be fair, we can't judge CO against CoH immediately. We can compare the CO release to the CoH release, I suppose. But to be consistent, we'll have to let CO get up and run with it...before we can adequately compare it to CoH, which has been around for 4 years and been able to polish itself off. |

A quick study of the chart shows that in correlation to its releases, something in Jan of 2007 and something in Jan of 2008 causes their numbers to spike. Obviously, the Jan 2007 data corresponds to "The Burning Crusade". I am not currently playing WoW, so I am currently unaware what happened in January of this year.
On a side note, some of the drop off may be related to economic issues.
And finally, WoW seems to be building a heavy "front end" position for their market. I say this because it appears that they target January and February for their "subscriber spike" and anticipate a drop off all the way through Christmas. NOT ironically, Wrath of the Lich King is slotted for November. ...why...that's just in time for a January subscriber spike. |
