When's the drawing?  I'm always up for winning games and giving them a spin.

And as I already said, the released version of Granado Espada will have 3 times the amount of content the closed beta had. writing the game off from GE's beta experience is just silly.

Also, there is another game that is doing very well outside Asia. its called Ragnarok Online, and the funny thing is, the team behind Ragnarok Online, including producer Hakkyu Kim created Granado Espada.
since when is ragnarok online P2P ? oO

they can add more content.. that doesnt change the fact that the gameplay is very simple... instead of getting rid of grind they give a bot system... sorry i dont buy it.

First off RO IS indeed pay to play.  While there's more private servers for that game than even Lineage 2, it was created as, and continues to be a P2P game.

RO at it's peak had I want to say several hundred thousand subscribers which shows that the creator obviously knows what he was doing.  I would recommend taking the free 20 level trial of Granado Espada when it launches in the US later this year and maybe you'll see why so many of us are defending the game.

Some people say that they will also be going for a business model that matches current North American MMO's ($50 for the box, $15/month).  That would make it the first Korean MMO to do that, I believe.  That kind of irks me.  As more casual players enter the MMO scene, they may walk in to a store and believe that Sword of the New World will be of the same quality as that Age of Conan game next to it on the shelf.  I would be very surprised if it was.

Then be prepared to clean your underwear, because GE will likely be the BEST MMO released this year.

How do I know?  I played the beta for Singepore.  Oh, and they are adding in vocie actors as well as a new client with even BETTER graphics than before which were already among the best the world has seen so far.

Meh... the graphics in this game are beautiful, no doubt about it, and more importantly the game has a fantastic style about it. However I wouldn't go nearly so far as to call it the best MMO release of the year, not by a long shot. The gameplay is fun but it's very simplistic and arcade-style - hordes and hordes of easy-to-kill mobs with such a high respawn rate that you can basically camp a spot and get a neverending stream of bad guys to slaughter. Great for a quick monster mash, Asian-style grind lovers and gold farmers, but a lack of depth and no real need to group (you get to take up to 3 characters out with you at any time) will diminish its popularity among more conventional Western-style gamers.

I'd definitely buy this game if it was f2p, it's great fun to blow off some steam if you only have an hour or so to play here and there, but I really can't see myself paying to subscribe... I just wouldn't put in the time to make it worth the money.

If I recall correctly, it will only be $20 for the game and $8.99/month.  This is much cheaper than other AAA quality MMOs out there.

Also, the game offers a fantastic amount of depth especially at the higher levels with multiple types of PvP (including open PvP), many different skill sets, and up to 36 total characters to really allow you to form parties of any combination you could want.

If people have been paying attention they would know the online aspect is going to be MMO-like and have a monthly fee.

The problem is the amount of scores and general inflation.

Ranking anything from 1 through 10 will make most people decide that 5 is the first "bad" grade instead of actually treating it as average. Another often repeated mistake by amateur reviewers is that they fail to inform their readers about what their reference is, ie they do not openly describe what their experiences with similar games have been and what they therefore are basing their scores on.

An example:

A reviewer has played Wolfenstein 3D and for some reason hasn't played FPS games since. Now the reviewer picks up F.E.A.R. and is blown away, scores of 10 all over the place. If the reviewer states that their only reference is Wolfenstein 3D then I'm right up there with the person, I can see where the scores are coming from.

More often than not amateurs are better off with more simplistic grades, let's say A, B, and C. They are easily understandable and readily available. A would be outstanding in its field within the comparison, B would be as expected, more or less equal to the reference while C would be something that is substantially worse than the reference.

Sometimes you see ridiculous sites/magazines where they use Percentile scoring. I often think, OK, this game got 59% Graphics, how would 61% then look?! It is nonsense.

Keep the categories as they are here on the site, but include a reference information, what game(s) are you comparing the current reviewed item to. And simplify the grades to something akin to A, B, C or 1 through 5 with an average that is meaningful.

I wrote a single review for MMORPG.com a year ago and can tell you that no matter what your score ends up being, people will disagree.  on a scale of 1-10 5 is supposed to be "Average".  Most reviewed games on this site fall in the 7-8.5 range meaning we ave yet to see a near perfect game (in the staff's eyes).  When I ended up giving a game a 7.0 because it was better than average. but not great, there was a near riot because a lot of people felt I was being overly generous.

The problem is that people are not realizing that not only is it a personal thing due to tastes in games, but other factors influence reviews as well.  I was running on a pretty low end system when the game crossed my path it was a better than average game.  If I were to take a look back at the same game now and measure it against what is out it would probably register around a 5.0 or a 4.5.

My recommendation to everyone on here looking for reviews: make sure the review is recent.  Some games keep up well with the times through updates, others do not.

MMDT ’07 Gears Up For Launch

The massive online gaming event of the year announces it’s return!

Last year around this time started the buzz of the MAYDAY MMO Domination Tour which hosted events and contests for over 10,000 combined players in 16 games over one weekend. Gamer Powered X (successor of Girlz Game Too) has geared up to do it again and is making preparations for the event which is slated to be launched starting April 28th with the bash winding down on May 1st.

“We plan to blow last years event away and are looking at additional venues now that the event itself is contained solely in GPx.  We’ve even got a large after party planned, which we will announce a bit later, that allows every player to join and interact with other players.” stated founder Jim “Handyman Vyktor” Miller. “It’s going to be a blast. We’ve been working rather hard on it this year and the additional help from the GPx staff has been most definitely welcomed.”

The official initial venue announcement will be made early next week which will list the games that will be participating in MMDT ’07.  Publishers/Developers who wish to get involved with the event should contact Vyktor vie e-mail at Vyktor@gamerpowered.com.

Those wishing to attend the event should head on over to www.gamerpowered.com to watch events unfold for the largest online gaming event in history!  Due to the popularity of some of the events last year, specific events will require registration for those events, so stay tuned!

Last year Girlzgametoo.com held MMDT and gave away thousands of dollars in prizes just for visiting their site and participating in their in game events.  The site has evolved into it's current form with a new focus (all gamers, not just female gamers), new purpose (great music to game to), and even more free stuff to give away!  Drop by the site to find out more about the event and to sign up for your chance to win!

Maplestory has been confirmed to be coming to the DS.  There's even an official Japanese Nintendo website with the stuff up but I'm too lazy to find it.

I'm not really surprised by this outcome to be honest.  While their concept had a ton of promise, they just didn't keep their community informed of everything going on which is a HUGE mistake in this day and age.

To those that pre-ordered and want a refund, demand one from the company.  If they refuse, contact your credit card company or paypal if you paid through them and let them know you never received the goods you paid for.  They'll handle it from there.

Anyone else who won a prize, was it broken when you opened it up?  I got a Voyage Century ship and the case was shattered to pieces before I even opened it :(

Ok, still haven't heard anything about this yet.  I won one of the model ships from Voyage Century and have no recieved it, nor an email saying when to expect it.  Anyone have an idea as to what is going on?

MMORPG.com is pretty tight with the editorial topics.  Back under Lepidus, there were quite a few I wanted to do but was told I could not due to the fact that they were either too touchy or that I was still unknown (hell, I never became known as I was only permitted to do about 4 articles over 4 months).  So I'm not surprised that there will be no editorial on Thrones of Chaos.

However, I'm sure MMORPG.com will track the sale of the game as Colton suggests will happen, and people can just boycott it there.  Not much else to do I'm afraid.

And before anyone starts flying off the handle questioning if I was truely a writer here, my handle was Trindras and I wrote the review for RF Online.

I spoke to IGG about the ships and they aren't sure how it's going to be shipped.  Basically they don't know if they are shipping them directly to the winners, or if they are shipping them to mmorpg.com's office and letting them send it out to the winners.

Enigma's inside sources and speculation are correct.  Perpetual spent way too much money in a hurry, which is a sign of poor management/lack of experience in the field.  MMOs as we all know take ridiculous amounts of resources to create and it sounds like they either spent way more money than they should because they don't know any better, or because they simply figured they'd get more investment funding from somewhere.

My heart goes out to the employees who are laid off at Christmas.  It doesn't matter if you are a Christian, Jewish, Islamic, or anything else, every major faith has some sort of significant event around this time of year.  May your job searches go well and if I may give you a bit of advice: join a company making casual games (not necessarily MMOs) as you'll have a much more stable career ;)

Copyrights only go so far in the gaming world.  The use of game mechanics I designed require patents to protect the unique mechanics I have designed so they can only be used with my permission.  And unfortunately, since the design documents for my game are now approaching 1000 pages, it'll cost me thousands of dollars (US dollars) to protect them all.

what legal claims? when was this email sent?

Roughly 3 months ago.  However, I'm not exactly rolling in cash right now and no lawyer would take a peek into all my claims without a few thousand.  So I sent you an email trying to find out exactly what ideas of mine were "borrowed" from Mr. McCall and to figure out what to do about it.  If you'd like to PM me your email address that you check I'll be happy to draft up another email for you and keep things a bit quieter.  Believe it or not, I'm not trying to rock the boat, I just want to make sure that my hard work was not improperly used by another individual.
