Bottom part of the video tab, is a troubleshooting button. I hit that and enable the option to run DirectX 11 instead of Direct X 9. That helped a lot, but I still think it could be better. I hope they optimize it more soon. |

Find yourself a group of people to play with, it makes things a lot more fun, and they can mentor you.
Other than that, there is no right way to start Eve, unfortunately. It's all about finding something you like doing and going for it.
The only thing I will say is DON'T GO TO 0.5 OR LOWER SYSTEMS. You might get a mission that says to go to one, just abandon it until you're ready, which will be some time in the future. A lot of new players make the mistake of jumping in to one, even if they know it's dangerous. Ship losses hurt a newbie a lot more than a vet; it's much harder for you to recover. Also watch out for scams, read stuff carefully.

Whenever a program uses your computer's resources and your network's bandwidth without letting you know, it's considered bad.
You can all act like smartasses and claim that anyone who doesn't know what Pando does is an idiot, but it honestly operates on malicious grounds.
Any legitimate piece of software, that was at least purchased, would quickly see a crippling lawsuit headed their way. |

GW2 running into the same issues that Rift and WAR had
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 1/14/13 1:02:11 AM
I still love and play GW2, but definitely not as voraciously as i use to.
I get enjoyment out of exploring the world, finding new DE's, and other hidden or not-so-obvious elements of the game. Finding beautiful scenery is also always fun to me.
My big problem with the game, is that the carrots are on a really long stick. There just feels like there's no freaking reward for playing the game.
I'm currently levelling a warrior and I really want the t3 norn cultural gear for him, but that's 119 gold. In most other games, 119g might be a lot, but not like, an insane amount of gold... But for me that's months of heavy playing and saving for a set of gear, just for the looks.
The only people that can really get satisfaction out of these things are the people that have amassed a giant amount of gold. There are not very many of these people, and becoming one of these people is very hard, and requires a lot of luck.
I really think Anet needs to reevaluate their reward system, so everything isn't so damn grindy. Legendaries being a grind? Hell yeah, that's cool. But exotics, just for the skins? There needs to be some rebalancing. Part of me really wishes Anet would inflate the gold rewards by a lot, which I know will ultimately make everything more expensive, but at least then I could afford cultural gear, bag runes, guild armor/weapons, and all those other things you buy with gold.

The game is a pretty rough beta, and it was originally going to be released by now. This kinda shows that Aventurine isn't a very strong company in the judgment/development department.
But I will say, what is working, and what is different from the original DF shows quite a lot of work.
I have faith that they'll grow as a company and improve the game significantly until it's ready for release.
My only other problem with the game is the community, it's full of dickheads, to be honest. So if you do decide to play, you should look for a group that you jive with; try not to play it alone. |

XFire - As MMO population estimation tool
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 12/27/12 7:28:56 AM
Since the entire population of any game in question doesn't use xfire, you'd have to have a decent random sample size to get accurate statistical information from xfire data.
I'm sure xfire can provide a large enough sample size for some games, but the problem is that the sample is not random. (People have to willingly sign up and want to use xfire)
Thus xfire data can only be used anecdotally, and can not be considered accurate. |

GW2: Next Content Update Arrives November 15th
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 11/01/12 1:24:04 AM
Originally posted by Vhaln They really need to overhaul the Black Lion Chests before they rely on them for another holiday. I'm sure most people would've been fine with the low drop rate on the holiday skins IF they still got some awesome and useful stuff from the chests in the first place. Some guy on the official forums proposed a token drop from the chest that allows you to buy things that you want for a certain amount of tokens, I thought that might've done some good.
Also they really need to rethink the rarity and availability of skins. I'm okay with some skins being almost legendary in terms of mats and cost, I'm okay with some skins being super rare dungeon/chest drops... But atleast give out SOME permanent skins that are easy for everyone to get, or you're going to piss off a lot of people. I'm glad they gave us some niche stat boots for the clock tower, and a town clothes witch hat for Mad King says...
I know the majority of the playerbase wanted a weapon skin, but only the lucky and the wealthy will have those now. I hope Anet improves upon this aspect of their events in the future, and maintains the quality and the amount of content they put out.
As much as anyone can moan about the skins (and even though I'm voicing my opinion on it, I really am not that flustered about the skins, I'm just sad I probably won't ever have an Arachnaphobia to pew pew with) Arenanet hit a grand slam with this event, especially in comparison to holiday events in other MMOs. So much to do, so little time. Lion's Arch in Halloween is just... beautiful. |

GW2's zones from a lore perspective were mapped by cartographers from Tyria. People who make maps, and decide where one area begins and ends, tend to do so in a rectangular fashion, unless something like a body of water or a mountain cuts through somewhere near a boundary. This is what GW2 does, because it's what humans do. It's a lot easier to measure the square mileage of a territory when it's a square.
If you scroll out while in the map, you can see the natural landscape and it looks as a part of the continent of Tyria... Zoom in and you get more of a man-made version of the map.
Tyria isn't as fantastical of a world as some of the other worlds in RPGs we're use to. It's not full of radically differing landscapes, all juxtaposed like in WoW... It's more like a regular planet that happens to have magic. |

Path of Exile: UNDERRATED: Path of Exile - Part 1
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/20/12 7:45:58 PM
"There's no impact on attacks. I want to feel the thud of an attack. I want to see interesting effects. Nothing about the combat felt impactful or fun. Not a single thing. It also felt very sluggish. The game has no polish."
Try playing the game for a meaningful amount of time instead of commenting on low level combat that shouldn't feel epic in the first place. |

If the races were at war (with no other conflicts) who would win?
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 9/18/12 8:09:41 PM
Quaggan.
Really though, going by lore it'd probably be the Norn... In EoTN a handful of norn were as effective as an army of humans and an army of dwarves.
Otherwise, I'd say Charr, since they're so good at genocide all ready. |

If PAX is just about the video games and swag to you, then yeah it's not going to be worth it.
There's a lot more to PAX than just those two things, and you'll never know what they are until you're on the third floor next to the escalator playing cards against humanity with your wife, your two best friends, some random guy, and a Male to Female Tranny. |

Will anyone here will still play LoL when you finally get to play DOTA 2
General Gaming « General Discussion 8/23/12 3:04:06 AM
two very different games, most LoL players will likely not enjoy DOTA 2. Many DOTA players may make the move over, but I would have assumed that most DOTA players preferred HoN of LoL in the first place.
