Actually depending upon the company, some view Alpha testing as all testing done internally and Beta testing as all public testing. Spellborn for example has this method of testing. So he has every right to call it open beta as its public testing that is open to everyone. Im not big on Sci-fi MMO's so probably wont give it a try but good luck to you.

Game Over] end Seriously though, c++ or c# are going to be your best bets as those are the primary 2 languages used by most game developers. c++ is used by more developers but a lot of next gen console games, especially for the xbox are done in c#. Ideally it would be best to pick one and try to learn as much of the other as possible and the differences between the two. Im currently learning c++ as I feel its the most versitile of the 2. |

Just give both games a try (free trial or buddy key) and pick the one you like best.
For me I played EQ2 then quit it to play WOW... quit wow and went back to EQ2.. quit eq2 again to play lotro beta and then release... I have now cancelled my lotro account (goodbye founders pricing :( ) and am going to start playing EQ2 again... The new expansion coming out for EQ2 looks rather appealing and the latest update brought a new race which I might give a try so I should have some enjoyment for several months to come. |

I would suggest making a few different characters and getting them to 10 so that you can get the basic understanding of what they have to offer. Depending upon your play style there are various choices. If you like to solo, then go Necro. Up untill I quit playing about a month ago they were hands down the best solo class in game and probably still are. If you like healing, blood mages are pretty cool due to the fact that they can do offensive spell damage just as well as they can heal. If you like to Tank, then imho the DK is the best option and seem to be able to hold agro a lot better then other tank classes. I played a Ranger primarily and I wouldn't advise you to play one as they need some tweaks and adjustments before they will become a decent class. Other then that just find what interests you and give it a try.

I have to agree though with the OP. Dont blame the people working on Vanguard, blame the decision makers. It was their decisions that ruined Vanguard and brought about the end to Sigil. |

Personally I hope that SOE might actually be able to make Vanguard an enjoyable game. Sigil seemed to create as many bugs as they were fixing. Hopefully it doesnt take 2 years to make Vanguard enjoyable like it took SOE to make EQ2 enjoyable.
Oh and I believe it is spelled Acquires, not Aquires. |

As a long time Alpha/Beta tester, I was on the fence about Lotro. during this time I was also a Vanguard tester and now retail player. Unfortunately Vanguard has some problems with it that just make it unplayable for me right now so I started playing in the Lotro OB again and have been actually enjoying it. So I will definitely pick up retail and will play it at least for a while. If by chance Vanguard fixes the bugs and shows a growth in population I may switch back to it but we will have to wait until then. For now I will stick with Lotro as it keeps me entertained, which is what I truly look for in any game I play.
Will you like it? Only you can determine that. All I can tell you is that while its not as exciting as EQ was for me back in the day (of course that will never happen again), it is enjoyable. |

Well I am all ready paying for it and will continue paying for it. Personally I think it is the most enjoyable MMO on the market right now. yeah there are bugs but hell I have been playing MMO's since they were MUDS and there has never been an mmo or mud that wasnt released with lots of bugs in it. I am fine paying for an MMO every month because I know that my money is being used to improve the games performance and to allow the developers to create new content for me to enjoy. Free MMO's usually come with no support, lots of exploits, lack of new content, and/or cater to the people who have a lot of money to spend on buying in game currency or items through their item shops or whatever they call it.

I will keep on playing and like others have all ready selected to pay in 3 months at a time... I am enjoying Vanguard more then any other released game and for me it is far more entertaining then the Lotro beta has been thus far. Yeah there are bugs, but those bugs are getting taken care of. Most of my real life friends are playing now or will be once they get their computers upgraded and so I have no reason to go elsewhere.

There will be no WoW killer... Over time WoWs numbers will dwindle as people move on to other games and new subscribers are frightened off by the fact that all the servers will have little to no content or community for the lower levels so they will instead try out and play whatever happens to be the newest MMO at the time. Thats just the way it is... Those who have been around since UO/EQ started saw this every time a new mmo came out .
LOTRO will do good initially but unless Turbine pulls off some magic and listens to the player base for once, it will follow the same road as DDO. WAR will start big as well and dwindle due to the fact that it is going to be a heavy PvP/RvR game and even mentioning PvP scares off a lot of potention players. Spellborn had potential but the lack of communication on the developers part and dwindiling community, has caused a lot of potential players to seek other mmo's. Perhaps when they start the next phase of beta it might bring renewed interest but only time will tell. Vanguard, thought to have been a possible wow killer, was released too early and requires hardware that a majority of players cant afford. Over time as they improve performance and people upgrade thier PCs Vanguard will probably get a lot larger player base as the game still has great potention. Perhaps Lineage 3 will become the king as its predicessors previously were, but more then likely they wont get to even half of WoW's numbers. |

I use to be a fanatical tabletop player but then my friends all stopped playing and it was hard to find anyone to play with anymore... I sold off my greenskin army and have only remnants of my chaos army, along with some Mordheim miniature I just couldnt part with... If ever I move to someplace where people play it or could find a group around where I live I would start playing it again in a heart beat. Hopefully the warhammer mmo will bring a renewed interest into the table top game...

I was a long time paying subscriber on the official L2 servers before I switched to a private server last year. NCSoft refused to listen to its players, refused to do anything about the bot problem (other then posting that they banned X amount of players which didnt do anything), and generally only cared about getting the monthly fee from us.. L2Extreme and L2Paradise on the other hand made L2 the enjoyable game it could have been had NCSoft cared to listen. Now im not saying they should make 40x servers but something like the 5x or 7x servers make it a lot better game where people wouldnt need to worry so much about gold farming bots because you could actually make enough money to but weapons and armour yourself. Anyways, thats my 2 cents on it... Maybe NCSoft will learn from this when they start making L3 but who knows....
