Sad story ends a bright idea..... But it was all about the money, you cant make a good MMo with a few millions anyomre...

They had a budget of 18 million euro, I wouldn't call that a few million.

Note: I don't pull these numbers out of my sleeves, it was confirmed on a presentation that can be found on youtube (it's in dutch though).

pfft, you felt the need to justify... just do what I do, state a fact then walk away. If they're to lazy to google who cares.

[edit]

and for the comment, you can't make a game with a few million... I don't agree, of course you can. If your crew has the talent at their job to "animate, create & program" effectively it can easily be done. I mean whats the usual low budget complaints? Bad graphics, bad animations, bugs and shitty programming. Have a crew who can do their job with stylized graphics in a proven engine (or even custom engine - would be cheaper) and it can be done.

Will it ever be done? Doubtful but it's possible.

Thanks!

Yes making a game with a tight budget is hard; Spellborn had a good budget. They only spent their money wrong (wrong engine, bad marketing) and they went with the wrong publishers.

I, for one, still miss this game and I hope that someday this game or a very similar one (re)surfaces.

If the game was published by a mayor house like EA then the game would have bin a huge succes, unfortunate the problem of the game was not so much the play style/mechanics but more about ad's and a bad publish partner.

Loved the skillweel system combined whit the semi-twitch combat style.

If they had more resources this game would have been a major success, the split launch also killed the game off.

I'm sorry, but your only proof of this was an article dating 4 years back from now. Please provide a source before making such statements.

according to this there is version frogster has in asia!

Please, friend... read, read, read.

The first thing you do is to check the date of an article before posting and making yourself look like a fool. You obviously didn't notice that the article dates back to 2007, before its initial release. Don't give people false hopes.

I'd love one! So excited :)

Not everyone's in general chat, you can leave that channel. Especially PvP players find it annoying and tend to stick to the chatchannels with their allies & corps.

Yes, the game needs work but these devs actually listen to the playerbase and make happen what they want. I see this game becoming very succesful over time.

Can someone send me a reqruitement code? I'd like to check this one out, been thinking about subbing for ages.

Get 60% off global agenda (these 30% codes stack wtih the promo on the website!):

controls where not great. The rolling UI was neat but it was a gimmick, it served no real purpose at all.  The graphics  where great, but the fact that the game ran poorly on high end systems was another issue. Content was the same as every other game, fed x and kill quests.

I actually have a TCoS painting here that I won from mmorpg.com.. wonde rhow much it is worth now :)

A gimmick? Surely you haven't paid any attention to changing your bar during your gametime...

So glad I kept the game's music files. Some of the best video game music I've ever heard gets made more eerie now that the game is dead. It's like I'm hearing it from beyond the grave.

Most of it was made by "Within temptation", they are pretty good (particularly their early work). Pretty big band in Holland actually, here are their homepage: http://www.within-temptation.com/

I liked that part too of the game :)

Well there you go. I had always thought it was Jesper Kyd. Good to know, I'll have to check out that band :)

Not true what you say Loke666!

Matthew Florianz, lead audio & ambient master, made all the ambient sounds and worked closely with Jesper Kyd. Jesper Kyd did the actual soundtrack.

Within Temptation, however, only made 2 songs to promote the game (they aren't featured in the game!). Those songs are called 'Sounds of Freedom' (Destroyed album) and 'The Howling' (this one was featured in a trailer).

Oh, boy, I am SO sad. I knew this day was coming, but the thought of my favourite MMORPG shutting down was something I tried to avoid. And now it's gone for good. Imagine your favourite MMORPG going down. I probably feel whatever Tabula Rasa fans felt when their game was shut down.

But while Tabula Rasa went down in flames, with a great end-game event, Spellborn was put down like a stray dog. They promised to keep the servers up until August 25th, yet no servers are up as of 21st. Gone for good.

I am currently saving what I can from the game files - but only the music seems to be salvageable. Unfortunately the maps can't be explored offline, because they're written in the proprietary Unreal 2.5 engine. Would have been ideal for cinematic video creation.

Why can't big suits at Disney release the server side code? Or at least some tools to open the maps? Maybe they don't even have them anymore.

I understand your sadness. I too am going through this. I've been with Spellborn years before its release in Europe. I've played through the closed & open beta there. I was there at release. And I'm still there now when it's down. And I'll never forget the game.

But there's one thing most people inc. you don't seem to understand:

Spellborn NV holds the license to the game, not Disney, not Playdom and certainly not the nowdefunct Acclaim or Frogster. So this means that Disney doesn't even have the editing tools, so therefore they can't release them! Spellborn NV might have them as their daughtercompany Spellwork BV created those tools.

Just try and see if you 2 can play on the US servers, I know of a japense release & korean as well (upcoming) so might still take a while however.

Asian release is on the way although I'm sure you can already play using the American version ;).

Well, it seems that the European servers are closed, and any remaining players are being transfered to the Acclaim(US) servers. With the original company bankrupt, things are not looking too good.  Supposedly there are new people in Korea working on the game, but given that this is Acclaim... Its too bad this didn't work out better.  Anyone have any details on the "re development" thats supposed to be in process?

Acclaim pretty much owns this game now. No company in Korea is messing with it or working on it. Spellborn NV actually is still in development of this game for the upcomming push to F2P, but the parent company of Spellborn NV has went bankrupt and is no longer staffed on that side of things. Therefore several people that you may have talked to on EU forums are now gone. Acclaim really needs to step forward and just purchase the full developer rights so they can control every aspect. Because as of right now, there is a stop in any sort of news regarding the transition to F2P.

Spellborn NV controls the rights to the game but has an agreement with Frogster so Frogster Asia can "redevelop" the game into a F2P MMORPG.

TCoS

Although a great game, the company that made it is bankrupt and there gonna re-release it in 2010 as a f2p game but until then the game won't have any patches or anything.

Sadly enough thats true...

TCoS

All remaining Euros are fed up with the entire situation and all prominent guilds have quit the game and moved... sad but true. Barely anyone will come over.

If you have a subscription you can get beyond silly...

Add in a clone feature and your game's there. The ability to clone your character at any time will allow you to skip the "baby-phase" and "teen-phase" and go straight to being an adult.
