Ask Anet.... they seemed to do well enough with GW that they found it feasible to develop GW2 which they seem to believe will do fine with a similar business model. 

GW costs money + you have to pay extra for new content and they have microtransactions to make money from. GW is actually simillar to the LotrO/DDO model.

Im guessing GW2 will have even more microtransactions to make up for the loss of a monthly fee.

Forgot about Jade empire since Ive never played it.

Making a game like JE Xbox exclusive was probably one of the most stupid gaming decisions made.

In my opinon there are 3 MMOs fighting for this award

EvE, LotrO and WoW.

They are on a level on their own when it comes to quality. I vote LotrO but consider it an even match between the three even if I dont play the other two.

The second tier would be Aion, DDO, EQ2 and CoH

This is just false.

There is nothing stoping you from leveling to 65 in LotrO without paying anything. Lots of content without paying + all the points you get from deeds.

The award is not for bes F2P released this year... Allods have a very bad reputation with how they handled their cash shop so it's not a big surprise it's not on the list.

The only strange pick is Wizard 101 since it's not even F2P and not even the devs call it one. For some reason the writers here on mmorpg really like that game and always trying to push for it.

Rest of the list is simply the best of F2Ps out there.

I didnt like ME very much , thought it as way to generic and bland. Havent played the second though but heard it should be better.

I can see where Thillian is coming from (even though it pains me to say it), compared to old RPGs likeBaldurs gate and Planescape Torment theese new RPGs just fall short in every way.

I will never understand why Bioware choose to create the most generic fantasy setting/story ever made (Dragon age) when they got the chance to create something without an existing IP.

This year it seems like there are more high quality F2P MMOs than P2P!

Just to bad that SOE would screw up so bad with their F2P switch for EQ2... could have been something alot bigger and better. But I guess SOE and not known for making smart decisions.

I think this forum would be great if there was a new thread started for every bug found in any MMO. Keep up the good work OP!

It is almost like giving them a disadvantage since many people love Blizzard but dislikes Activision.

I mean, if its Activision/Blizzard it should be Warner Bros/turbine, Electronic Arts/Bioware to mention a few.

The company is called ActivisionBlizzard and the parent company is Vivendi, Blizzard a game studio under the company ActivisionBlizzard. So it's not the same as WB/Turbine or EA/Bioware.

Why isnt LotrO on the list? Only MMO this year to bring in millions of new players because ofit's improvements.

Funny that alot of people are saying AoC, seems like the myth of that games improvements are still alive here but still its doing as bas as ever.

DDO had 6 updates this year including guild housing, 2 new races and lots of new content and features.

Every game here is hated (except maybe EvE). Darkfall and AoC is/was probably among the most hated games here. STO/CO are other examples of hated games here that are huge failures.

I would say LotrO, EvE and GW is probably the least hated games here and are the most succesfull after WoW.

So I think your theory is flawed.

Or maybe, just MAYBE, it was the fact that Cryptic decided to make an MMO of one of the most loved IPs in only 18 months and price it higher than any other MMO released... Makes no sense.

I had alot more fun in the short time playing Mortal than I did STO. There was nothing positive about that game except that the first 10 minutes of space combat was pretty fun.

Over Halloween GM controled monsters started attacking players in cities.

Then just recently a full scale story backed invasion happened to the racial capitals that involved hordes of monsters, and even some dragons.

And how is that innovative? I think you need to go and look what that word mean.

I think that somewhere along the line, they had to have cut costs.  From a business perspective, I just have a hard time believing that all the development companies out there couldn't figure out how to develop their games like this.

 

Anyhow, I'll gladly give GW2 a shot and see for myself whether it really is true that their game has everything that the regular sub-based games have and that it's totally free.  If it does have it, I'll be thrilled and happy for the future of the genre.  If it's not true, I'll be able to say "i told you so!", point fingers and laugh manically.  Also good :)

 

It depends on how much microtransactions they will have the game.They can make alot of money of that since alot of people will buy it and keep playing since there is no monthly sub.

Rather have 1 million people paying $5/month in average than 100k paying $15/month
