Please note the 2776 hrs logged into WoW on your account = +1 retards posting.

And what, if you would indulge me, is your point? Are you equating every person who enjoys playing a video game with their friends as a retard? 2776 hours is not as much as you'd think, considering it averages about 10 hours a week seeing as how I bought WoW on release.

I'd be willing to wager you've spent more time doing something more retarded, like sitting on the internet making posts and pretending to be cool?

"Oh yeah, I totally just burned that dood! PLUS 1 INTERWEBZ FOR MEH!!!!!11!!!!11!1!"

Alas, my point was that all these people are ignorantly posting as if they've played the game in its entirety (when in fact we really know very little about it other than questing will probably be fun for once in an MMO). Similar to the post you made about me, ignorantly assuming that you knew anything about me or who I am.

That said, carry on.

I don't know the other guy, I don't have a problem with him either.

But I'd like to point out, you didn't name anybody, but HE took offense. I found that to be kinda funny. : )

I'll gladly carry the mantle of retard, as "Fighting on the internet is like competing in the special olympics..."

Just don't think I'm the only retard on here.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I don't think there would be any fewer Jedi/Sith on the servers, just people would have more flexibility and specialization capability.

SWTOR is a BioWare game so everyone should basically know what to expect by now.  It's funny, when people were playing through KOTOR 1 & 2 they were clamoring for an MMO in the same vein.  Now that that wish is closer to reality they are trying to pick it apart and put it down based only on speculation and conjecture.  Stop comparing this game to WoW and pre-NGE SWG because that is what you know and those are what your expectations are.  I don't remember BioWare stating that they were going to re-invent the wheel with this game.  They just wanted to bring the success of KOTOR 1 & 2 to the MMO genre.

Oh no, but the IP that they are working with demands such. Don't you dare take anything Star Wars and NOT try to reinvent the wheel in some way or shape. Every Star Wars movie was revolutionary in some way, most all of the video games were unique and brought something new to the genre, and are among the most memorable games many of us played.

Now granted, they are still doing the 1st Voice Over MMO, which is fantastic, unqiue, and reinventing the wheel in that way. But there are many many gameplay missteps that they are making.

And how many successful MMOs have completely reinvented the genre?  None.  Developers take what already works in other games and tweak things here, add things there.  It is futile to wait for an MMO that changes everything the genre has been successful with.  Change happens gradually.

As for the Star Wars IP "demanding" that the MMO wheel be reinvented, I doubt you are really that naive.  Pre-NGE SWG is the closest anyone has ever gotten and you can blame SoE for ruining it.  But this is a BioWare game based on KOTOR that makes no pretenses of being pre-NGE SWG.  This game will be hugely successful at launch.  The only thing uncertain is how BioWare will handle what happens after that.

Hey believe it or not, I actually agree with you here. A complete revamp is not by any means what I expect, or should be expected, and what's successful is such because people like it and it is enjoyable. However, don't be cookie cutter and completely uninventive either. Believe it or not the "wheel" itself has been reinvented plenty of times. Stone->Wood->Metal->Rubber->Tread->etc. It will always be a wheel. Just a better, more specialized wheel, with greater longevity.

And I also fully agree that SWTOR will be wildly successful for minimally 3mo, probably 6mo, but my hopes are they are planning and thinking farther than that.

If my only choices for being a Consular/Inquisitor are healing/ranged skills, then that is not a Jedi/Sith. That is just a healer/ranged class with a different class name.

I don't want to be pigeon-holed into a cookie-cutter role, I want the ability to pick from variety of skills.

QFE. Extremely well said. I may very well quote you on this on the SWTOR forums.

All I can say is BOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! This is horrendous. A number of us on the SWTOR forums predicted this long before the OP (altho props to you also), and we begged and pleaded with them NOT to do this, but rather to make a single Jedi class that was more customizable into different trees (quite like KOTOR - even if you picked Guardian, Sentinel, or Consular, you could still pick powers or feats from the others' trees). BUT NO.

I've been excited about this game since two years of speculation, long before it was even thought to be announced, and yet, continually I am disappointed by the worthless path they are taking this on. This is an EXTREMELY poor decision to split the force classes. BAD FORM Bioware.

I'm def excited to see what changes happen as a result of Dominion, and for the new "quality of life" improvements to the game that have overdue for a while now (Fleet finder + loot log + email system + in game browser ... they really have done well in this regard).

I am however disappointed as well how they recently conceded and dropped sov prices so low. Whatever happened to "We want to you only control the space that you use." ??? Sov changes are important to the game, and are def needed, but they must stick to their guns in certain areas. OFCOURSE people will whine, esp the ones that it's gonna hinder.

I'm also intrigued with some of the more "under-the-radar" changes that are upcoming: Projectile Weapon fixes, Faction Ship changes & additions, battleship shield recharge rate nerf... the impacts of these will be interesting indeed.

My hope: They do stick to "This is platform for future betterment."

Evemon is in my experience the very best app; optimize skill training times, skill paths to use ships/modules, and even an algorithm to optimize your respec attributes based on your current skillplan. It shows SP/hr (to optimize this), wallet balance for quick reference, and a host of other things.

EFT is a beast of a program too, incredibly helpful and nerdy, and "easy to use," but it's also easy to get lost in what all the numbers mean.

I'll have to give EveHQ a try tho. Sounds good.

A few other apps I've enjoyed:

EveWalletAware <- I'm a market guru and this one helps me balance out my sales for the past 2 weeks or so.

OutOfEve.com <- In-browser app that allows you to browse detailed info on your char, including all wallet transactions, corp info, killmails, etc. The beauty of this app is that you don't have to DL & Install... go over your friends' house and check your char in an instant.

Nice article. I've really enjoyed the series of articles you guys have been putting out for eve lately, great job.

- Formations sounds awesome! I've been thinking about this kind of thing for a while now, as well as enhanced flight control options that I think the game needs.

- Incarna/DUST/Planetary Interaction is going to be epic, and will definitely complicate the system even more (which is great for the "thinking man's game" that Eve is). Bring on the Civilization/SimCity-ness to the game! It will also bring a larger playerbase methinks, especially since FPS are typically not "thinking mens' games". :)

- Sovereignty has been long time an issue, and the doomsday devices AoE - while kewl in theory, it was too much like hitting a Staples "That was easy!" button.

- Near future: Glad to hear they are interested in "fixes" and polishing more too; The best idea for an MMO is always to make what's already in the game (that players enjoy) even better - note: without nerfing or overpowering.

Correction tho: Dominion "Fighter Bombers" are not new ships. They are new drone types for use exclusively by Super Carriers. See: http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=696 . There are however vast changes occuring to Pirate/Faction ships. See: www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp

EDIT: Oh, and also a Projectile Weapons Balancing Fix is in the works for Dominion: www.eveonline.com/iNgameboard.asp

Honestly, all I can say is serves you EFFin right SOE. Screw the players, you get screwed right back. They have denied the claims that servers are empty for so long, and, op, what's this?

I am definitely sad to see my home Kauri go, especially our player city Arakeen on Tat, with its Admiral Snackbar =(.

Your days are numbered SWG... come SWTOR, your coffin's nailed.

Haven't read the flurry of responses. - I saw the title of the article, and in my head said "#1 has GOT to be SWG" ... so I skipped thru all of it and was SO gratified to read NGE as #1. Thank You. And your summation of the issue was pretty good, it's def been talked to death, and the bottom line is: it's not coming back, and it will be forever remembered in video game history as the biggest MMO blunder EVER (considering my signature on these boards, and I'll admit, I've been a whiner in years past about this issue - SWTOR will help put my woes to rest).

The new mail system is (obviously) long overdue, and the idea of interacting with the game through the web browser is yet another unique ambition, CCP taking advantage of countless players' ideas. Esp since EVE is really a game of information, numbers, and statistics, accessing these outside of the client will be hugely helpful.

Character pages will be, ok. They'll add content and functionality, and I'm never against that. Its the other implications and possibilities of this system that get me excited.

Well beyond the more serious issues brought out in posts here, Factional Warfare is definitely played out. It was fun and exciting at first, but once you realized that there were no real benefits/consequences for all the hard work you're doing, it becomes pointless, and not as fun.

I will say though, it is a decent way for new players to get their feet wet in PvP. Beyond that, eh.

EDIT: And I forgot to say that I don't think LP rewards will by any means bridge that gap. I think it will entice a few new people here and there to try again, and it will give the hardcore militia fanbois some goodies for the sweat&blood, but it won't really fix the issue at hand.

A trailer that uses NO gameplay footage is a joke, which is exactly what this one is.

Hm, anyone read the title: Cinematic?

Honestly I've seen this same thing happen in other MMOs. When new shiny toys come out, they're:

A) EXTREMELY rare drops to build

B) EXTREMELY difficult to logistically obtain.

C) EXTREMELY expensive.

D) EXTREMELY rare to see players use them.

The one thing that fixes this: time. Give it time, and you'll start seeing tons of them, and people won't be afraid to bring them out anymore, and will drop the prices too. And in Eve, time usually seems to drag a little slower than other MMOs. Granted, if they increase the drop rates, and improve the portability of building components, this will help a lot. But, please don't over-saturate the market to compensate. T3 should NOT be as common as T2, just as still today, T2 is NOT as common as T1, simply based on risk of loss.

Alright, in order to answer your question, I have to ask a question in return; Did your wife say you could play?

All kidding aside, why not reactivate for a month and check it out for yourself. I am generally against throwing money down the drain (even just $15), but it sounds like you enjoyed the game before so it's certainly not a big gamble as to whether you will have any fun.

You my friend are a wise person, and are obviously married =). Keepin the wife happy is #1 priority. I did ask, and, she's ok with it. Balance is the name of the game, that's all.

So I took your suggestion, and signed up for a month. I called a couple RL friends who had quit before too, and they were all debating on joining again too, so that worked out perfectly. I actually don't think I woulda started again without the RL friends too. We'll see how this month goes.

LOL, if you need someone to talk you into rejoining the game, why even consider it. This is just another lame reach for attention you are obviously not getting from your new wife. Why would anyone care if you play at all?

Wow, do I know you? Did I ever attack or offend you in some way? I hope I haven't, but if so I apologize. My wife and I are extremely happy, and this is just a craving for video games and challenge; I get my other cravings satisfied quite well. I just don't understand what causes a person to lash out at someone they know nothing about...

To everyone else, thanks for the responses and advice. Maybe I'll see you in game!

I've been looking into starting to play for the first time because I have a few friends that play.  I'm curious to see the responses you get from people to see if I'd even start myself.

I'd say that's a good gauge of whether or not to play. I'm still anxious as to any responses myself lol.

I quit the game Nov 08 due to the immense time sink of the game (I just got married), and due to some frustrations with market loading glitches that cost me upwards of 1billion ISK.

I've been reading about Apocrypha lately, and wondering if I might enjoy jumping into the game again. When I left, I had just gotten a Machariel, and was actively participitating in factional warfare (was quite fun, altho a lot of downtime too).

So, the $1 million question: Should I start again?

Does this guy realize that updates come out on friday? Every update has been released late on this site.

And story ?  Yeah sure. But you cannot simply mean that there is a great back story that someone can read about, or quests that lamely have a back story that you can follow.  Most people do not read quest backstories.  Instead a couple people do and then create summaries on forums or wikis or databases so no one else has to slog through it.  This suggests several things.  The first is that the story line has to be far more interactive than it presently is to really be a "pillar".  The seocnd is that forums and other out of game methods of problem solving and communication simply have to be taken into account, understood  and utilized more effectively.  These forums represent one interface between the virtual world and the real world.  There is innovation to be done in this regard?

So I hope that Bioware or any other game company does not paint themselves into a corner when they think about what an mmo needs.  This is not how new cool games are created. Its how clones are created.

Since story is the #1 rated desire for players on SWTOR forum official poll, I will address this only. While I agree with you on the summaries and databases of the story lines, Bioware has circumvented this by stating that their game will be almost 100% voiceover play. This is a first for any MMO, and will surely hook people into the story a lot more firmly than just text.

Also, I believe i also read a thread on here about the overuse of the word "Clone" by MMO players.

Also, you're in the wrong forum boss... completely off topic here. There are plenty of other forums to post that in.

Finally, these comics are pretty neat, but moving way too slowly. Honestly, you're better off waiting for a good 3 months, then reading it all in one shot.
