"SuperServer" Announcement and what it means as we understand it now
General Discussion « DC Universe 5/06/11 3:21:09 PM
you can try to spin it however you like with your internet rage, it doesnt really change the facts of the matter.
if you are going to quit over a name, then obviously you dont care much for the game in the first place nor do you have any social ties that you want to keep. basically you are just looking for an excuse to rage over and quit, and as silly as a name is, its a good enough cop-out.
if you really enjoyed playing the game, you would never let something like a name take it away from you, forever... and thats the bottom line.
all the rest is just bullshit.
edit - id be willing to bet my paycheck that most the people who say they will quit over a name really wont. they are just hoping if they whine and act like spoiled brats hard enough then sony will pamper their bottoms. sad as it is, thats the most likely reality of the situation.
p.s.
think about it for a second, there are games like champions online out there where you have every powerset you could possibly ever want with the ability to fully mix and match your character tailored to your perfect desire. it has nearly every concievable costume piece you could ever want to make your character.
sure the game itself sucks, the combat is a snoozefest and the gameplay is boring as hell... but who cares, you can have the perfect concept character with the perfect name every single time!
why are they choosing dcuo over that? because even with all its flaws and limitations its one of the most exciting to play mmorpg games on the market. they can threaten to leave, but there is nothing else out there that even comes close to the combat and gameplay that dcuo offers in an mmorpg game.
everything else out there is the same boring auto-attack snoozefest. played one, played em all. |

i just dont understand the name issue.
You make your character who he/she is, not a name. its still going to be the exact same character either way.
who knows how soe is going to handle the naming issue, but people need to understand that sometimes you need to make a compromise. compromise is adaptation, and all advanced life forms know how to adapt, so stop being a dinosaur.
i love the name on my fire character, but if im forced to change it so i can play in a more alive game with lots of people around thats going to equal me having a lot more fun, you can bet ill happily change my name to something else.
i make the character, not a name. if i have a reputation, i can send people tells and in a couple days people know who i am again. peoples reasons are just absurd honestly.
edit - what would you have done if the day you bought the game your beloved name was taken? throw it in the trash can and never play? thats basically what saying youll quit over a name is doing.
"the game looks fun, but my name was taken, so i had to throw it away" o.O |

"SuperServer" Announcement and what it means as we understand it now
General Discussion « DC Universe 5/06/11 12:11:38 AM
im sure my idea wasnt exactly how its going to work out, but if you look in that thread "i just had to laugh at this" or whatever, i was saying it there before it was announced. i also posted the idea on dcuo source before their forum server went haywire, lost tons of posts, and decided my account is now inactive with no ability to activate it, or an alternate account.
anyways i dont really care about someone saying, oh good idea man, or wtf ever.
i just want to play dcuo again.
the one thing im rather surprised about is the people who are like "omg ill quit if i have to change my name" and half the time the name they want is some obscure thing i cant imagine anyone wanting anyways, but seriously, its just a name.
they could solve the name issue by copying CO's @handle deal as well, though im sure some of these fanatics still wouldnt be happy with that.
personally i think its kind of ridiculous. players - "our servers are dead, we need more people" soe - "ok we are going to fix it with a super-server" players - "omg omg my name, ill cancel if i cant keep it!!!!"
so what exactly is soe supposed to do? grow players in test tubes? |

radarx posted over on the dcuo source forums :
basically it looks like they are going with what i said in the other thread. everyone is on one giant server, but they instance world areas into a pvp or pve zone. so when you leave your HQ you will choose Metropolis PVE or Metropolis PVP.
that way everyone is on one giant server for fast queue for all instanced activities, yet you have a seperate pve and pvp version of metropolis or gotham so everyone gets to play how they want without interference from the other. |

i spent the evening playing Champions Online because soe is down, derp.
anyways, CO has nothing on dcuo at all. CO has worse graphics, extremely worse combat, and amazingly stutters and lags all over the place when dcuo runs smooth as butter. after an evening of CO im just dying to be able to play DCUO again because its in an entirely different league.
combat in CO is a snoozefest. set your energy builder to auto attack and you barely have to do anything except mash 2,3 or 4 once in a while and hold it while the charge builds up.... then sip your drink while your guy auto attacks to more energy.
the thing i was most offended by with CO is that its about 2 years old now and the game stutters all over the place like i have some bad computer or something... when i can run dcuo at max settings and never lag, while seeing a 10x more beautiful game world.
i mean my computer may not be the best ever, but i have dual 450gts running sli, 8 gigs of ram, 3.2ghz quad core, cable internet... and i can play any modern game with zero lag.... except champions online. the only thing i can say is cryptics game engine is garbage.
i will say it made me appreciate how awesome dcuo really is though.
i want my weapon combos back, i want my exciting combat, i want my beautiful graphics. sure dcuo has its faults, but in comparison, its still amazing. |

CoH has the best costume creation ever made. beyond that the combat is really outdated when set next to dcuo, and considering almost all of the activities in an mmo revolve around combat, thats a big deal. it has been out many years longer though, so of course its going to have the most content available.
CO is a money sink. even if you pay a standard monthly fee for the platinum service, you still have to pay more cash on top of it for all the various cash shop items. the combat system isnt much, if any, better than CoH which is many years older. i cant speak much on the content level, as i dont feel like being ripped off so i never spent any money on the game. standard 15$ monthly fee for platinum + cash shop items on top of it = rip off.
DCUO has the best combat system in about any mmo out there and it has beautiful graphics. most people seem to feel that the game does not have enough end game content to make them happy, but it suits me fine, and its still the newest one of the three. where the game is mostly lacking is in limited powersets to choose from, and needing more content for max level characters to do. there is only 6 powersets to choose from, and many people have been sitting around for 2 months waiting on new content, which has cost them the majority of their subs.
if sony would get on the ball, get the super-servers up and running to fix the population problems a lot of servers have, and start pumping out end-game content to keep people busy, i would say its the obvious best choice.... however all of that is going to take time, like months. if you are not willing to play through the games early stages, or just dont have faith in sony, then i would say CoH is the way to go simply because there are only 3 options and CO is a money-sink trying to take advantage of their customers. |

Updates No Longer Monthly (like we didn't see this coming)
General Discussion « DC Universe 5/02/11 11:53:15 AM
anyone who has been playing mmo game for any amount of time knows noone is going to keep a monthly update schedule, or the updates are going to be tiny. even if you look at the only mmo it seems everyone knows with WoW, it takes them 3+ months on average to get new content out that involves a new raid or dungeons to do. i wouldnt call balance patches in between updates myself. the only way any company could keep a monthly update schedule would be to feed you tiny little insignifigant updates, which would generate as much internet hate posts about how these updates are worthless.
it was naive and foolish of him to say it was going to happen, but not any more than people who believed it and are actually upset over it. |

F2P in general is just a bad idea. they are always pay to win, and then you have all the unfavorable types who never pay for anything. so the playerbase is inevitably split down the middle with your group of people who pay to win, and your free-loaders who never really get anywhere, but are just constantly there.
it might make it look like there are more people on the servers, but you are generally going to have the same, or probably less, people who can actually do end-game activities in the pay to win crowd. i would honestly say you will most likely end up with even less end-game players because you will lose a certain percentage by just going to a F2P model. i know i would most likely quit the day it happened. i dont like the F2P model, or the community they create, id move on. |

I'm sorry, but I just had to laugh at this!
General Discussion « DC Universe 5/02/11 11:23:47 AM
the pvp / pve issue could be handled pretty easily to keep everyone happy. many games already feature multiple instances of the same zone.
just copy the same basic thing, except make 1 zone for pvp, and 1 zone for pve. when you leave your HQ a little pop up comes up where you select between: Metropolis PVE Metropolis PVP
then everyone is happy playing in their pvp or pve world without interference from the other. it would also allow the entire playerbase to group together for things like raids, alerts, arenas, or the various other instanced activities to do at max level.
there is no reason they have to force people to play in a pve or pvp land if they dont want to. the technology has been out for many years to give people the exact world they want while still having everyone on the super-server. |
