Originally posted by LobotomistYes, unfortunately it isn't as simple as memorizing. But, if you can find convenient hot keys near your direction attack keys, then it isn't nearly as difficult to pull off. I've added a few to my mouse and near the hotkeys and most of the time you barely notice.
Just to add something else, someone here said that there is a form of auto attack. That person is lying. You have to manually swing your weapon. If you have an opponent in range and you just stand in front of them, you will not swing. You will proceed to get your brains beaten in. Also, the game is NOT twitch based. When I think twitch, I think Counter-Strike, I think Call of Duty, I think Unreal Tournament. This is merely a little bit of Mortal Kombat mixed with your traditional MMO combat system.
I really wish you just had to memorize the combo. I don't see why it wouldn't work.. I'd like to know what the major difference is technologically with the two. |

Originally posted by dtal311It has calmed some of my worries considerably. My biggest concern was whether or not the combat would be good enough for millions of players to be able to get into and play over a period of time. While the combat is awkward at first, it gets easier as you become more familiar with the controls. You can put hotkeys anywhere to fit your style. I thought that if AoC was going to succeed, it had to have a good combat system. I think it is definitely on the right track.
It runs on medium with 35-40 fps on my computer currently. Though, that has a lot to do with some of my other pieces of hardware. For instance, I have 8 Gigs of RAM, Vista Ultimate 64bit, SB X-Fi Extreme Gamer, C2D @2.7ghz. My GPU is my girlfriends 8600GT. So, besides the card, everything else is pretty up to date. A lot of my client side lagging isn't there because of the CPU and my ridiculous amount of RAM.
Still, I've seen screen shots on low, and they still look pretty good. It doesn't take a beast to run this game, but it would be wise to replace that 4-5 year old video card. |

Originally posted by JimmydeanSeriously. I started my download on Thursday night. It took me roughly 12 hours to download, the next day I installed it before work.. then when I got home, I started playing. So, either you're trying to install a 6GB file on dial-up, or you started downloading sometime today. Both of which are kind of foolish if you actually got a beta key for it.
I think most people finished theirs in 4-8 hours. I finished mine a little longer because I was downloading through the middle of the night with less seeders and so forth. And honestly, if you do get it finished before tomorrow, you'll easily get through the Tortage Island section and be able to play quite a few PvP matches with multiple characters. But, if you are on dial-up, you won't be able to ever do a PvP match. Good luck. |

Originally posted by dougmysticeyI honestly didn't read past you comparing WoW to UO. Which I believe is in your first sentence. If anyone ever compared WoW to UO, they obviously have never played the two, and therefor have no idea what they are talking about.
Why would I read something that I already know is going to be a waste of my time? |

I remember just yesterday, so many people saying AoC is going to flop. So many people talking about bugs and glitches everywhere. Problems with everything. Resource hogging client, blah blah.
Well, I'm not in General or Tech beta, but so far, the PvP weekend that I am involved in is awesome. Most posters here and elsewhere are responding with almost exclusively positive feedback. How many betas have there been where almost everyone was psyched after playing?
Invisible walls? Where? I know I only got to go up to level 5, but I didn't see any invisible walls.. unless I swim out into the ocean, which I haven't. No reason to. |

Originally posted by ThornrageI use G1-2-3 for directions, was planning on adding g4-6 for uppercut swings. G10-11-12 and 8 for movement.. Pretty similar to asdw -234 that you probably use. With more on my mous, 3 hotkeys.. I could add a few more with the sensitivity buttons and application control button.. but would be awkward. I don't expect to have to select more than 4-6 hotkeys though.. I mean, how often are you going to pull off that many combos in one fight?
Once you find your own personal control scheme, you'll start to get the hang of it. It's definitely more fun because you have to be very active to be good. Skill is actually very important in AoC. |

Originally posted by Thornrage My thoughs exactly, my experience was almost completely opposite of this guys. AoC's combat system a clone of WoW??? Are you high on crack man? Seriously, what are you high on? I want to know, because it must be some really nice stuff dude. |

Okay, so I've been playing for a while. Heres a short synopsis of my experience so far.
Character creation. Looks good. Models look good. You can make yourself fat, thin, muscular.. a mixture of all three with a triangle slider. Lots of face options, I don't think all of them are in at this time though, the client is a little limited. A plethora of options on the facial features, bone structure, scars, tatoos. You can change skin tone, eye color, hair color, etc. If you've played Oblivion, it's about as complex as that. The UI is attractive, good sound. Pretty solid.
I wish there were more options,(Hah) Specifically skin tones but it may only be a client thing, it might be a different story in the full version. Plus, you have to stay true to the story.
Tortage Island. You get to go up to almost level 6. Basically, you play up until you reach the city. Water effects look great, excellent graphics, even on medium. I am running a 8600GT currently, I run at 40FPS. It's very linear, you can do a little exploring, but not much, as it is exclusively single player. I like the UI, it's pretty nice, smooth animations, there is slight lag sometimes while fighting.. but that may be a client problem. Directional attacks are actually pretty easy once you get a control scheme and get the hang of not getting auto-attacks. Several times I found myself saying "Attack you dumbass" because I'd forget that I actually have to manually swing in order to do damage. All in all, not bad. Blood and guts everywhere.
The speech animations could be better, some of the animations with the voice acting is poor.. in my opinion. Like, Saddur the Galley Slave Master has a high pitched voice.. odd, considering he looks as if he's about 6'8", 300lbs.
PvP. Not bad. Again, not many people know their characters or the controls very well. There just simply isn't enough time in three days to become a master. There is quite a bit of lag when the stuff hits the fan, blood, spell effects, combo effects, etc. Though, If I had a new GPU, that may be different. I have 8Gigs of RAM, so I didn't have much of a problem. The Annihilation seemed lame because of how people started to play the maps. Go to res totems, destroy them, then kill each other. You'd think that your team would be interested in protecting it, but that isn't the case. Combat is hectic, Capture the skull, or whatever.. I didn't test because I hate that game. Leave that to Unreal Tournament or something.
Mechanics. Casters have it easy, click spell, it goes off.. Rangers are the same. They have a few melee combos though. Fighters have it rough. You have to first, hotkey a combo, then hit a number of hotkeys in order to pull it off. Pulling it off isn't hard in itself, but having to hotkey upwards to 15 or so keys.. that's rough to do without having to move across the keyboard and still hit the right ones at the right time. I'm using a G11 logitech, and it's still pretty difficult to find enough hotkeys for the combo, then enough hotkeys for the directional attacks. I even added some to my mouse. I've got it down to about 6 combos with the directional attacks in addition. Adding more would make things a little uncomfortable. However, you have free reign to put hotkeys just about anywhere, so If you find something nice for your playstyle... congratulations.
Rangers are overpowered and Priests are underpowered. Though, the former is being fixed during the downtime right now. I've only come acrossed one glitch, it is in the lobby. If you jump off the ledge to the bottom of the snake head, next the a pillar... move around a little bit (because you're stuck), you'll fall through the world and die. But who knows if that lobby is even part of the final version. I'm running a C2D 2.7ghz, 8G RAM, Asus Striker Extreme, RaptorX HDD, X-Fi SB Xtreme Gamer, EVGA 8600GT.. I run medium settings with a few things turned up at 40FPS solo, 20-30FPS PvP. Low shadows, no AA. Only 1280x1024 res. I'm guessing you'll need a high end 8800 to hit high on decent framerates.. I know for a fact, one 9800 Gx2 will run it on max. But, on medium, most of the textures are pretty darn good looking.
The only really annoying thing that I can acrossed.. was this. The foilage rotates depending on where you are looking. It is always facing you. So, if you turn slowly in circles, you can see it turning in circles as well. I guess they have to skimp somewhere, 2d foilage in order to make the rest of the world look really nice.
I give it a 9 out of 10 for its purpose. We are testing and they are fixing rather quickly. It's going to be a good one. |

Originally posted by Huzz I haven't noticed much kiting. Most classes have some sort of knockback or stun.. I think this PvP test will help a lot. Rangers are being fixed, the servers just went down for a short maintenance. And honestly, not a lot of people really know how to play their character yet. Priests seem useless.. I think they will get the first buff as a class archtype. Healing is too weak in the game. |

Originally posted by Fion You don't think so. The PvP weekend was a 6GB download by itself, NDA lifts at 3pm right? Well, lets just say I believe that I wouldn't be surprised if the full game is more than 30GB |

Uhm, you guys are aware that you can sign up for the open beta without subscribing to fileplanet right? Why would you pay money now and then if you don't get picked, you just wasted whatever you spent on a sub. Wait to see if you get selected, if you do, then get a sub and register. |
|
|
Anyone know if you have to pay for a sub in order to apply? Or is this just a joke? |

Originally posted by VolgoreApparently you don't understand what a Beta TEST is. It is a TEST. It isn't a two week early release of the game. They aren't going to let you go a third of the way through the game before you even buy it. They start with closed beta for focused testing, then open to a pvp stress test to check the servers. Now, they add those two together and see what problems come up in order to fix them for launch.
Think for a second, it helps. |

Heh. I checked all of the other mentioned sites and none of them have any information about the open beta applications. Only Fileplanet has a section for it and it isn't open for applications. You'd think they would have made sure things were ready to go before telling everyone to go apply for open beta.
Unless I'm blind and dumb, I don't see it. |
