Yeah, I dont get it either... The way they use the word alpha has kinda made it lose its meaning as well.

Its been out for how long in korea..? More than a year?  Logically, this "alpha" should mean translation and maybe tweaking the grind a bit (they sure seem to love grinding over there), by changing exp numbers a bit. Thats it... How long can that really take, and does it even needs "alpha testing?"

Maybe its a greed thing? This way they can sell "alpha access" to all the desperate people waiting for it.

You don't understand why it's Alpha.

If ArcheAge came on a set of disks that you install like a single player game you'd have a point.

MMORPGs however have many moving pieces and running one out of a different datacenter with different hardware, network, patchers, auth system, security system different analytics, different personnel - it's all alpha for Trion.

Think about it.

XLGames only provides the ArcheAge server and client software and basic architecture - they don't provide anything else - MMORPGs need a lot more to actually run.

So here's a list of things that make it Alpha for Trion

1. New servers/network architecture setup in Trion's datacenters

2. Integration with Trion's Glyph patcher, Trion's CDNs

3. Integrations with Trion's account databases and security systems

4. Integration with Trion's monitoring and metrics/analytics systems

5. Trion's operations team need to know how to deploy/patch and troubleshoot ArcheAge's deployment

6. Trion's CS needs to learn how to use GM tools and learn the game's systems so they can help the players

7. Cash shop integration with the game - huge undertaking, this alone takes months

8. The database team needs to setup proper auditing on the live game databases for proper player support and metrics

None of the above has been done by Trion before - so them it's all ALPHA.

If MMORPGs came fully packaged with monitoring, metrics, patchers, a staff to run them, data analytics software, cash shop and billing systems that will work in any region, and have it localized.... it's not how it works.

Because each publisher has their own systems for billing/metrics/security/deployments/data analytics/customer support systems - and games need to be integrated into all of those to run properly.

Do you think NCSoft, Trion, and all these publishers like to wait around a couple of years spending millions of dollars to buy the hardware and get these Koreans MMOs to run as best as possible - do you think they are delaying this on purpose?

They want to get the return on their investment as fast as possible - the thing is - MMORPGs are COMPLICATED - there are 100s of servers and a huge team that needs to know how to run all the pieces correctly.

All this is true.....A lot of work has to be done.

BUT this should be done before any mention of an mmo !!!!!......Not charge $150 before you do ANYTHING.

Things that leave a bad taste in my mouth :

- F2P cash shop ( this shows greed )

- Asian hybrid

- $150 alpha ( this shows greed, bottom line, and no way to dispute )

No matter how good the features ( and they are all good ). This mmo will be among the other 200 games on the list that are forgotten about in six months because of the F2P cash grab and Asian hybrid.

A video game company isn't there to satisfy you. Ultimately, the ultimate goal of a company is to make revenue. Plain and simple. Making a free to play game with no cash shop? Are you nuts? The whole point of investing money into publishing or developing a game is making a return. That's what an investment is. You don't make money, you go out of business. It's not about greed, it's about business.

This is the basic fundamental about being a game developer. People who want to develop games for fun usually never get anywhere in the industry. You will never create something you want when you work with a company. Half of the time, your ideas will get thrown out. That's how the game industry works. They're there to make money, you're there to follow orders and develop what the company wants to push out.

Asian Hybrid? The game was developed in Korea. This argument is invalid. If you don't like Asian inspired games. Don't play them.

As a former game reviewer, cash shops are a must to keep a game a float. However, pay to win (stat based item) cash shops are what are morally wrong in the gaming industry. However, from what I gather, the cash shop in ArcheAge is purely a cosmetic one.

I personally don't mind buying my way into an Alpha test. The funds help development and localization. The company is there to make money, and if they release a game I actually enjoy having fun in, money is what they'll get.

It's a business. Deal with it.

The Alpha is translation basically, but the game has a voice acted story line (cutscenes included), as well as misc NPC chatter. Literally (I'm an Alpha Tester), there are a bunch of NPC's that will say stuff as you walk past them. The game is very voice oriented. So that requires voice actors as well. I get them selling Alpha, but the money goes towards hiring the actual actors to completely voice over the game. Everything in this game is voiced over other than the quest text.

Top of that, there are random 3D errors, crashes and issues. Those need to be resolved as well. Trees stutter, some trees are completely black, there are texture stretching, etc. The game is literally in a Alpha state.

Hahaha...of course you did....

Sadly I have to wait for my tax return, hopefully it won't be late! But I too am adding my funds after seeing the gameplay interview that Cynical Brit did with some of the devs. :) Told my peeps on GW2 yeah it might have dungeons and use the trinity but at least I know I'll get rewarded for my playtime which is more then what I can say for this game after what happend in November.

Oh and I don't think that would have been a good idea for really.

Of course I did. I dumped 100$ into the Founders Pack on FireFall when it was first made available. I paid the 250-300$ for the Warframe Founders pack just to have my name on a mission, and get all the founder exclusive gear (which I highly regret cause it was a reskinned version of the level 1 Excalibur Armor), paid 150$ for my Guild Wars 2 Collectors Edition (Physical), when they were first announced for Pre-Order.  Call me an addict, but when I love a game or have been following it for awhile, I do dump serious money into a game.

Totally get what you mean by November. Ugh. Guild Wars 2 is still good, but I am a big fan of the Dungeon & Dragons styled Dungeons that have traps, ambushes, puzzels. I hate static dungeon based gameplay with just patrolling mobs or maybe an Elite Mob here or there.

So.. appearently.. even though it is still the beginning of February.. it considers February's issue a "Back Issue" and you need to pay 9$ for the issue now. I'm highly disappointed..

How do you trigger the first event in the Meta chain in getting him to spawn? I think this is the most difficult part of spawning him mainly because there is really no clear way (upon google searching) in triggering the meta chain. I've cleared over 100 portals now. Dont dynamic & renown heart events around the area and still nothing.

Anyone know exactly how to get the first Meta Event to trigger? :) Thanks.

Gw2 for me

TERA is a pvp game.

GW2 is a pve game with meaningless pvp attached to it.

I was tired of the comparison before but this now has just gone too far.  This is about  the same as comparing EVE to SWTOR because they are both sci-fi MMO's.  Completely different games for completely different people.

*bashes my face into my desk* Let me fix this for you.. As someone who has played Guild Wars 1 since it's beta and Guild Wars 2.. and is currently subscribed to TERA...

TERA is a PvE game with meaningless PvP attached to it.

Guild Wars 2 is a PvP Game. (Thus the name GUILD WARS). Yes, it has a PvE Story Line, but the PvP is what's mostly promoted in Guild Wars and what most of the Guild Wars players actually do in Guild Wars..

tera just a basic korean grind fest  just alot prettier nothing remotely diffrent from it except the vanarch system which i think they had a similar concept in archlord back in the day people are just naive to see it at least gw2 just feels so much diffrent than most mmos out there.

TERA is NOT a grind fest. I am sorry, but you seem like one of those people who got bored and couldn't struggle through the tutorial/beginner Island.

A Grind is when you have to grind the same mob over and over to gain a level to gain access to your next quest or when you have to grind the same mob for multiple quests with you eventually killing over 200-500 of the same mob before moving on.

TERA, has enough quests that you will never find yourself killing mobs to hit your next quests. There are enough quests (easy ones to do at that) that will make you fly through all your levels. The quests also move very fast so you're never ever finding yourself killing the same mob over and over again. It's usually kill 10-20 of that mob, and move on. So you calling it a "Korean Grind Fest" shows me that you have not either A) Played the game at all and only attacking it cause it was developed by Koreans, or B) Didn't invest more then 2 hours into the game to actually get a feel for it.

I'm currently a paying member with TERA, nearly level 40 and I am enjoying the game thus far. Needless to say, I also dropped 160$ (150$ + Tax) on my Guild Wars 2 Pre-Purchase and I will find myself playing both just as equally. This thread/review is stupid. Seriously, both are great games and everyone is intitled to their opinions. If someone likes Guild Wars 2, they will go play it. If someone likes TERA better, then they will play TERA. This whole TERA vs. Guild Wars 2 crap needs to stop. It's an old, dried out subject that I've seen in the "Recent Posts" box on the front page for the past week or two.

I half agree and half disagree with this post. You paid for the full game, the beta invite was just a perk. They are still inviting people through a pool of 1,000,000 beta sign-ups they did I believe what, a month ago?

It's just more of a "Pre-Purchase now and you can get a garunteed spot in beta" for those who don't really want to chance the sign-up thing.

BUT, paying 60-150$ to help improve and test a game IS indeed illogical. It's better to invite a massive wave of sign-ups to stress test and break the game so it's better improved. Though, I can see the whole paying for it might give insentive to actually test the game since you paid for it an all. Why not make it better?

There are usually two sides of the coin with this thing, thus why I half agree and half disagree.

Don't pre-purchase/order at Gamestop website. You will not get the pre-order bonus key if you do. You actually HAVE to go into store and pre-purchase/order and make sure the key is printed on the recept. They have been having problems with handing out codes and 80% of the time, Gamestop doesn't even print the codes on the recept. DO NOT order online at gamestop, go into the store and actually make sure they print it out. I had to demand it when I got my copy on Monday. Put 160$ on my copy and the code wasn't there, told them they made a mistake and they had to re-print a new recept for me.

Need I say that the BETA build is most likely (and I think I've heard this from a source) not the official release or graphics. Like some BETA's I've tested, they released a beta build without high resolution textures, DX10-11 support, and various other things. They only released a stable build for test purposes.

And before someone attacks me with the "Why not add the high graphics so we can test those?!?!one!!1", graphics testing is not required for a beta test seeing as graphic bugs are easy to catch and would only require in-office testing.

The point of a beta is to submit your feedback and report programming errors to the team. Such as weird AI behavior, weapon not acting the way it should and various other things like that.

I will probably be streaming the game as well.

Can't wait. Spent 150$ + Tax on the Physical Collectors! This will be the best. Only thing I wait for other then Beta and Release is for my 10-in Charr Statue! FAWK YEAH!

No need to play the original unless you want a look at the lore predating GW2, but it's a fun game in it's own right and worth dabbling with (no sub fee, btw) if you're looking for a time filler.

Keep in mind, GW1 isn't a full on MMORPG, so some things will seem wierd compared to GW2. However, it's still quite enjoyable.

^ This.

And to someone who stated to not buy the game for it's story.. Most people bought GW1 because of the story.

Anyways, I do highly recommend you buying GW1 to learn the lore of the Guild Wars world. Searching through a wiki can be tedious. Playing through the gamepaign of Guild Wars 1  would give you a much better understanding of the lore then reading it on wiki.

You can buy the entire box set I believe for 20-30$. Another bonus with this is, if you accomplish certain goals and fill your Hall of Monuments in GW1, you can unlock cool titles and items for Guild Wars 2. So again, I HIGHLY recommend you buy and play GW1 only if you're that enthusiastic about Guild Wars 2.

I see where y'all are going with this and I am only simply stating my opinion. I see I have lost here but these are my opinions and I wanted to see what y'all would think of them. I've expected the worst. I started this topic to get a conversation starting about Aion vs. World of Warcraft to see what the general public thinks.

Private Servers don't bother me the least bit. It's just very discouraging to hear that there are already like what, five or six servers before the official launch.

I'm sorry, but almost everything you said is so wrong. First of all, Wow is still the hot topic in almost every discussion regarding MMOs. What even gave you the notion that Wow is heading down hill? Day and age? What?

Aion is doing great, that is for sure. But in no way even close to Wow as of yet. I'm not trying to make Aion look bad or anything here. It's a well known fact that Wow is in a class of it's own in regards to MMOs.

Don't get me wrong. I am not stating that Aion nor World of Warcraft is a bad game. I personally agree that they both have aspects to the game which make them fun. I am only stating that Aion is starting to become an epidemic like World of Warcraft. Every corner of the internet I turn, I see something related to World of Warcraft. Whether it be Ads or a simple Google Search. Aion seems (in my opinion) to be doing the same. I'm starting to see Ads here and there, and even the occasional topic relating to Aion.

Sorry, I have to quote myself on this one. I believe I have contradicted myself. I just saw that I stated World of Warcraft was a fail. I apologize for that one. Well, in ways it seems a fail to me, but it still has some aspects to the game that make is fairly interesting.

I am only stating my opinions about what I think and I am very glad to see you guys are coming back with your opinions. I just wanted to see what you guys think.

The only way for that to happen would be for aion to surpass wow subs which isn't likely to happen in NA/EU.

Aion may not surpass World of Warcraft, yes. None the less, Aion may become a Negative Epidemic like World of Warcraft has become. I've done Korean and the Chinese Beta Test for Aion and I simply can't get myself attached to the game. Sure it's fun for it's PvP and it's Abyssal "Capture Point" PvP and such. Sadly that is the only aspect that has really caught my eye. I know it's against the rules to talk about Private Severs here on, but hell; Aion hasn't even been fully launched yet and there are already a few Private Servers out there for it. That alone hinders my respect for the game.

Soon you'll start seeing millions of servers up for Aion. Soon you will see "Aion" this and "Aion" that. It's only a matter of time before Aion sinks in the depths where World of Warcraft currently resides. The only way I can see Aion pulling out of this one is to seriously take action onto the current Private Server developers and to tighten' up their security a little bit. Of course, that is my own selfish thinking. None, the less.

Blizzard lost my respect when they sort of stopped giving a hoot about private servers. I mean, yeah I still wonder how they make an income off their game after so many servers being released.

I'm starting to believe that Aion - Tower of Eternity is starting to become a cancer that is slowly spreading like World of Warcraft. Do you agree? I mean yeah sure, we all had high hopes for this game and we expected a lot to come from it. As the previous topic that is currently being debated said. "Aion isn't that great" and I for one say it's kind of true. Sure Aion had released a few features that made the game fun, and yes I for one am all about the other aspects of the game they included instead of the constant grinding most MMO's put you through.

But seriously, everywhere I look. I always see some topic flair up about Aion as like World of Warcraft did back in it's time. If you ask me, this game is starting to become a fail like World of Warcraft did. Everyone liked World of Warcraft too much till the internet finally sank its hands in and then it went all down hill from there. I'm starting to see some topics talk negatively about Aion as well. It won't be long now till people start saying "Aion Clone!" or something related to the terms we use for World of Warcraft in this day and age.
