I played the hell out of Elite on my C-64 back in the day. It was a fantastic game. Heck, it's one of the reasons that I picked up EVE originally. I really look forward to this iteration of the series and what Braben does with it. That being said, I try to keep the following in mind:
1. E:D doesn't exist, and will not exist for at least a couple years. During its development, the dev team will run into issues and have to make compromises. I try to temper my claims (not my enthusiasm) about how it has features that EVE should have, or does something better. Right now, it does nothing that EVE does, nor does it do anything better. 2. E:D is not an MMORPG like EVE. It will be single player and have a multiplayer component. It's way more MMO than MMORPG. 3. EVE has been out for 10 years, has an incredibly rich history, has a large and mature universe that is affected by the players (sovereignty, for example), has a dizzying about of career possiblities, and has a complex character progression scheme. That's just to name a few of its features. If E:D or SC have even half the gameplay that EVE has now (and will have 2 years for now), I hope that both games succeed, along with EVE. It will be great for PC games to have multiple choices for those seeking a break from fanatasy-themed games. |

The conncurrent login record is 63k. Last weekend it hit 55k. This weekend even more players are expected. Almost 10 years since this game came out, and it continues to grow. Pretty cool. Yeah, I'd say EVE is doing quite well these days, and only getting better. If you've been on the fence about playing EVE, or returning to it, the time to play is now! |

I love the changes to the AI! I'm a drone boat missioner half the time, and the new AI makes combat way more interesting, and risky. Nice work CCP.

WoW borrowed from them, and then games borrowed from WoW. In other words, WoW is far from being the "first MMO". |

Aion is definitely a quality title.

Originally posted by Reizla Good post. I remember Commander Keen. I also remember playing M.U.L.E, Telengard, and Reach for the Stars for hours upon hours.
The original Wizardry on an Apple? Magic. Adventure on the Atari 2600? Amazing. Typing "Load *.* ,8,1" on my C-64? Good times. Hanging out on BBSes with my 1200baud modem? Scary! |

Is the state of MMO's getting worse?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 12/12/12 1:54:02 PM
No.
The better question: Are MMO players getting worse?
The answer: Yes.
It's much easier to place blame anywhere but on ourselves. In this case, that "anywhere" are the games that we play. |

I hope EVE never goes F2P. Having a sub is a great way to keep the freeloaders out, while ensuring consistent updates and free expansions from CCP.

If WOW was released now would it be as successful ?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 12/05/12 4:15:18 PM
Originally posted by Roguewiz Besides WoW, there was DAoC (best mmo ever), AC, EVE, AO and probably some others that I'm not listing. Of those, only AC is no longer online.
If WoW was released now, in its current state, it would do just fine now because of its polished vertical progression and extensive content. |

Kinda losing interest in MMOs...

To each his own then. My experience with EVE has been the complete opposite. And as for exploraton, I think EVE has the best possible mechanic for that type of gameplay, by far. |

My experience with EVE has been the exact opposite. It is, quite easily (to me), the best community with the most mature players. Granted, I've only played it for 6 years, so I'm not sure what it was like in the very beginning, but compared to other MMOs, it is a jewel of relative maturity.
EVE, TSW, DAoC are the best communites that I have experienced WoW (by sheer number of players) and LoL (not really an MMO though) are the worst that I have experienced |

[Column] Guild Wars 2: Everyday I’m Levelin’
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/26/12 2:45:08 PM
Originally posted by ShakyMo I played WoW for quite a few years. During those years, I went to a total of *one* raid. Raiding is not the only progression route for level-capped characters. Personally, I prefer vertical progression through PvP at level cap. WoW has that. As does Rift. As does SWTOR. As does Aion. Etc. Those games held my interest for quite a while due to that vertical progression at level cap. GW2 doesn't have that. If I manage to make to 80, the idea of "exploring" a finite, virtual fantasy world will not hold me long term. It's free, so I guess that's ok. Different strokes, right?
As for games with "longevity" and never-ending (or nearso) character progression, EVE is a great example.
