Torchlight was Diablo with aspects of Diablo 2 added in.

It was essentially the same game. My playthrough found no gameplay differences or new ideas that were not in Diablo or Diablo 2. It just seemed easier to play.

I am interested in D3 over TL2.

Diablo still isn't an MMO.

And as the poster above said. Blizzard employees thousands of people, you could get a whole lot of answers.

If Guild Wars and DDO are MMORPG, then so is Diablo

FYI, Guild Wars is NOT an MMO. ArenaNet themselves say it isn't. It was never designed to be as much as it seems similiar or is grouped with them. Guild Wars is a more massive version and style of Diablo than it is an MMO.

On topic:

I'd say Blizzard doesn't have a favorite anymore. They used to back when choices were limited. But now I'd venture to say that elements of non-MMOs get tossed into their designs now. I honestly think you can walk into the office and find them all playing non-MMOs alongside MMOs and find everything from Korean grinders to F2P to SW:TOR closed beta.

Skiing is a skill in Tribes.

Its a skill that allowed players to use hills, jetpacks and gravity to move very fast. If done right, you can maintain speeds 5-10x faster than regular travel. Or burst speeds absurdly high.

The point of skiing was that it was an accidental side-effect of the games engine in Tribes 1 that was so popular that it was incorporated later. It just gave the game flavor and added skill for chasing or running or harassment.

Tribes was always about fighting in any direction and using large-scale maps. And i mean large-scale that nearly all other games dont even scratch on the scale.

I am really excited to hear about this game. I've always wanted a good remake or twist to Tribes. Huge fights with even dozens of players would be awesome.

Huntards in WoW.

Every single one of them.

I hate huntards. The ones that roll need on a weapons away from melee toons(im not talking the ones meant for them either). The ones that cause wipes because they cant control thier pet. The ones that never bring enough ammo to an instance or cry for the healer to heal thier pets because they dont turn the taunt off. The ones that pull aggro and then feign so the healer gets bent over and molested.

I hate the villianous huntards. In this case, I do attribute it to malice over whats simply explained as stupidity because they are evil to me.

Heh, this article speaks on many levels. Mostly because it describes the problem of inattentiveness and a complete disregard for details. People want more more faster faster but if its given to them in too large of bites, its rejected.

And by reading comments, I do find it interesting how many missed the point. Even a few posts above mine, they even said TL:DR.

There is also an aspect of "sensationalism" that I believe that Jon Wood missed. Some sites will intentionally skew or alter the true message to get more hits and create buzz. Tabloids do that. They take two pictures, photoshop them together and toss a headline up there that has nothing to do with the actual contexts of each shot. Some people mislead to generate more business and feed on the chaos and hype.

I think I have to agree that something is very wrong at Blizz. Let me explain:

I stopped playing WoW 3-4 months ago, cancelled my subs and un-installed the game. My PC has AV software and Anti Spyware running. I never respond to the stupid phish mails telling me I got into cata beta or won a celestial mount.

So, no key loggers, no visits to dodgy web sites and no logging into WoW for months. The weekend just gone my mate phones me up to ask if I'm logged in to WoW, which I'm not, and says he can see one of my chars in black temple. Kinda wierd...

I check my email account used on battle net, which is a yahoo account. Can't log in... same with WoW acct management. So anyway, I regain control of the yahoo acct, reset the wow acct password and check the subscription page. It's on a 7 day exemption (I later spoke to blizz sppt and this was a free week promo sent out at the start of this year).

The worrying part of all this is ... how did they get my login details? When speaking to blizz support we went thru all the usual, what av you run etc. Ran the scans, found no suspect software. The guy at Blizz decided he'd pass this on up the food chain because he was worried how the acct was hacked. Now I know people will say things like " ah but you did x,y,z and blah, blah" but it's not like I'm a clueless technophobe. I have nearly 20 years as an IT professional under my belt and I know a thing or three about securing my PC. So far I have found nothing to indicate I was hacked at this end.

Isn't the internet fun?

edited: spelling

Ill explain this again.

Blizzard pays employee A  10$/hour

Employee A wants to buy a new fridge.

Employee A takes 10000 emails per week and sells the list to gold farming companies for 10 cents each & guarantee account is inactive.

Employee A recieves 1000$

Gold Selling company brute forces the passwords of 100/10000 accounts.

Gold Selling company hacks and makes money off inactive accounts until banned.

UserA gets banned email. Questions Blizzard and pays 1 month for the restore and checks that all is right

UserA quits after 1 month

Employee A resells email as inactive.

Blizzard has many "Employee A".

Tip: Passwords should look like this: UTonqw0t013nsfFF0s   and not like: imsoL337

Again, user error is far simpler of an answer. There are so many ways a user can error.

Yes, its possible that there is internal security breaches. All companys have that problem and most of them have internal security teams that watch employees that have access to that.

The biggest flaw with people blaming Blizzard, which is easy to do, is that there is no evidence to support the theories. Someone needs to cite a source that shows an employee geting fired for doing that. Or a document or internal memo showing underhanded or questionable action. Or a communication leak somewhere. Sure, blame Blizzard. But do it with some common sense and with reason. Do it based on fact or substantial evidence.

You can theorycraft into the ground how its Blizzards fault your account got stolen. But simply put, its far more probable that somewhere sometime you released information that led to it.

Occam's_razor

Really... User Error.

Now I am one that wouldn't throw out the possibility of Blizzard being involved in some devious or flat out wrong activities but I wouldn't give that the primary reason.

And for all the IT pros out there that think they are so secure and so smart. Really its you above all people who should know that anything connected to the internet is vulnerable and nothing is truly secure.

And if you dont want to pay for the authenticator, then go with a free option that is very openly available and accessible.

This thread is so dumb...

For a game thats been out since before WoW, its unacceptable to be rough around the edges.

Also, "not that bad" is fine if thats all you even knew. But its like going to McDonalds and ordering a double-cheese and then suddenly they take away the meat patties and replace them with big mushroom caps. Then they change out  the ketchup for mayo but leave the mustard there and then say you are no longer allowed to "have it your way" and are forced to select thier pre-selected modifications to it.

Sure, some might say its "not that bad" if they never had the original. But for the same price you can get so much better.

After having both my accounts hacked last year and restored, I was a little surprised to learn at how many people were getting their accounts hacked after Blizzard forced everyone into the battle.net account system. It just seemed rather odd to see more WoW accounts being hacked after this said event then before.

Let's be honest, the authenticator is a scam. Blizzard is having a hay day by screwing their customers out of $7 more because their battle.net system is worthless.

Last month something very peculiar occurred but I didn't think anything of it until it happened again this month. I pay for 3 accounts, 2 of mine and my wifes. Last month and this month, despite Blizzard stating all charges are recurring until you cancel, all 3 accounts were cancelled. Not one, not two, but all three. Was it because of lack of finances? Nope, checked the bank last month when it happened and simply started a new subscription the same day they got cancelled.

So, the interesting thing I noticed this month when resubscribing was that Blizzard now charges $1 extra to verify your financial account. I was like hmm, so Blizzard keeps cancelling my recurring subscription so I can pay them $1 for each account I reactivate, nice.

Sure, it's only $1 to us the customer, but how many people are having their subscriptions just randomly cancelled for no reason? You make the call.

Look at the RealID fiasco that has, really, been swept under the rug like it was no big deal. I had my concerns before, real concerns that I won't get into, but that sealed the deal for me. Integrating Battle.Net with Facebook is problem enough (consider that all of what you put on Facebook becomes Facebook's property) but the RealID thing...that was too much. Blizzard has been corrupt for several years now and those who choose not to see it or say 'meh' are either stupid or don't seem to mind the consequences of doing business with this kind of company.

And what, may I ask, are the consequences of dealing with a "corrupt" company?

And how do you define corrupt? In government, you define corrupt by someone taking more than thier fair share or using power outside of its intended purpose. In private industry, you know they are trying to maximize profit. So how then can you call them corrupt?

So far, I had my account stolen once. I refuse to say my account was hacked because in, my guess, 99.9% of the cases the account is stolen via scam or user error. Since then, I havent had any issues. Billing, nope. Account access, nope. Email, nope. In game, nope.

I use RealID. I am not worried about my personal information because I take precautions in who I give it to and in what manner. All you really can do is keep yourself aware of how much you give out and where it goes and from there keep an eye on your banking and credit information.

Hrmm...

"Personally, I hope I'll have the good sense to quite before I stop trying to better myself."

Little things is right. Grammar, punctuation and spelling make huge differences.

I'm pretty sure it wont turn to a flame war.

The OPs flame starting attempt failed.

Yes.

You cannot transfer funds with the same account. It takes 2 accounts to move gold from hordeside to alliance side.

The problems with TR are all evident. The reasons for failure all evident.

It started out as a turkey dinner with rice and ended as a ham with potatoes. The cost of development was too great for the remake to recover from. It was doomed to fail before beta began.

The game could've been great if it had its end result as the first idea and had that whole dev time and cost. It would've been a supurb game.

Your title is misleading.

They admit there is a chance they cannot/will not do it. They arn't promising you anything but havent said they wont yet.

I had my account stolen (not hacked, as the term is used inproperly as few accounts actually are hacked) and had everything restored just fine. Not that I cared for them as I made a new toon, but I responded the same day I received a notfication email saying my account was permanantly banned.

Blizzard does a good job of handling issues regarding stolen accounts. However, the longer you wait in finding out or responding then its going to be a smaller chance of your account being restored or all made well. If it took you months to find out, then I imagine you dont care much for what you had anyway.

Let's get something straight here as apparently there are WAYY too many ignorant kids in this thread.

First off, ANY "private server" using an "emulated" version of server software developed WITHOUT any code or work from Blizzard's own code is legal. This is PROTECTED by LAW since it's someone ELSE's work and NOT the original companies. You're essentially just making your own server software to respond and talk to their client (which if you paid for, and did not torrent/pirate, makes this part legal....unless their client is free for download then it doesn't matter).

This is why they haven't, and won't, go after most private servers. Now, the part where it DOES become illegal is when they "charge" for services using a company's client materal (ie: charging for items that you can only garnish by using Blizzard's client software without their permission). This is a WELL KNOWN fact within the "private servers" world.

The only reason this moron thought she could get away with this is that she believed that they wouldn't go after someone as "Small time" as her. That is until she moronically bragged to her friends about how much money she made. From what I'm told, it was a family member of one of her friends that reported the illegal earnings to blizzard (wow player lol?), and then whom took legal action.

So let's sum this up for everyone:

-Creating an emulated "open source" server software for an MMO is NOT illegal as it's third party work and has ZERO connection to blizzard.

-As long as you paid for your copy of the game's original client (that's being talked to by the server emulation software) it's completely LEGAL.

-The part where it becomes ILLEGAL is when you attempt to charge for ANY service using Blizzard's client software as a medium (connecting to the server).

-99% of "private servers" are donation based, and this is also completely legal as long as a donation isn't "Required". ANY server that says someone will get any FORM of "benefits" for donating should be reported. They try to shimmy around the law in order to get more donations, and this IS illegal so you should report them no matter what.

Thank you for reading, you are now more informed than you were previously about private servers. Have a nice day :)!

-Faded

Well this is a bit of a grey area..  But Blizzard rents / loans you access to its client. In order to play on private servers you have to alter client files (in most cases just one) and that within itself can be considered a illegal alteration of the client itself.  While its not illegal to host a software that allows access to it. It is however illegal to alter a client to connect to it. So they could go after every person that ever connected to a private server and get the cost of a monthly subscription + client from them. I doubt that would ever happen other then to prove a point type of situation.

And legally any type of donation has to have tax's paid upon it. So most Private servers operate in a illegal fasion. Most people do not realize that any type of donation you make a % of that gets paid to taxs.  Most private server operaters never report this in order to keep the money, ect.  Another grey area.

Tax evasion isn't a very grey area.

It boggles my mind on how anyone can possibly be upset with Blizzard or defend the woman.

The woman was illegally profiting from Blizzard's work. She was making millions of dollars doing it.

She told a friend or family member who tipped Blizzard off, they filed a suit regarding damages and the woman ran. She didnt dispute the charges or even try to fight it. She completely ignored the suit.

By her completely ignoring it, the judge granted a DEFAULT judgement in Blizzards favor to the fullest extent of the law.

Courts do NOT favor or show leniency for those that dont even show up.

The same goes for a traffic ticket. If you get a ticket and challenge it and the officer that issued it doesnt show up, you win by default.

She broke the law and Blizzard defended themselves. She didn't show up to defend herself. And for all you know, IGE.com is defending itself or working a deal with Blizzard or in litigation or some other legal bull. Because the big dogs arnt being announced or being brought down doesnt mean they arnt fighting.

It really boggles my mind.

There's a legal loophole about that right now. So long as the client copy was obtained legally, and the private server doesn't charge, it's a bit of a grey area.

Even so, the worst that should be able to happen is again, a cease and desist.

If a Cease and Desist is the worst that should be able to happen, what value does it have? I was under the impression a C&D was an attempt to get someone to comply before taking further legal action which would, presumably, be worse then the C&D itself.

If you do not comply with a legal C&D then there are worse legal ramifications.

However, this woman ignored the suit entirely which means the 88MM that was awarded was defaulted to Blizzard. Its not at all something you should shake your head about. Its perfectly fine for Blizzard to be awarded that since it wasnt even objected by the person that has to pay it.

Potentially, you could have someone do something to you and you sue them for a trillion dollars. If it goes to court and the defendant ignores the court, you will be awarded a trillion dollars. In the eyes of the court, by not contesting the suit she agrees with Blizzard.

There are lots of grey areas surrounding private servers. However, this case there was none.

None of the articles on MMORPG.com really cite sources or give real examples.

None of the articles here really contain lots of meat thats rooted very deeply in much of anything.

Really I read the articles as just entertainment. I don't expect much true insight or great journalism. I really expect these articles to be more of musings from ones mind or a blog. Too many people take them too seriously and try to get more out of them than I think they were even intended for.

I wont deny that I do enjoy reading the articles though.

Sounds like a Republic to me.

Regardless, if they decide to do it in a private manner, it will likely cause more contention and issues than it resolves. You will have these guild leaders that feel better and more powerful than the rest of the playerbase pushing thier own and thier guilds agendas to the Devs.

What about those large number of non-guilded players or smaller "friend" guilds? This is not good or bad. All it does is tell me the Devs want to obtain player feedback and this is the method they are choosing.

Really how good or bad it is will be determined what kind of influence the Devs let them have and what the Devs do with the information. Hate on SV if you want for what they are doing, but reaching out to the players proved it can turn a game around into something good. Look at how Global Agenda 180ed on its direction due to the player surveys and how much more people are liking it.

The thing is... EVE skills provide severely diminishing returns.

So a 5 year player might have ALL of the skills applicable to frigates maxed out at 5. But a new player takes 6 months and has ALL of the skills applicable to frigates at levels 3 or 4, then that 6 month player is about 80% as effective as the 5 year player in that same ship doing that same role. So thats spending 10% of the time to reach 80% of the strength. And in EVE, skill can more than easily make up the gap in raw number effectiveness.

I get what people say about it and how they think. But the reality is that there are always people at the top of every MMO. And unless they stop playing, they will likely always stay there.
