I was looking forward to D3. But now i won't be buying it. because of the no offline play.

Same here.

But I figure some day I'll buy it.  Once its been emulated.  How long did it take for WoW private servers to start popping up?  That was an mmorpg.  Im going to laugh at Blizzard here, because once Diablo 3 is emulated, EVERYONE is going to download it and use.

While most people that play WoW dont play on private servers, absolutely everyone is going to jump at the first hack or emulator that allows them to play D3 offline.  Its going to blow right up in Blizzards face.

So dont worry.  One day D3 will be fully playable offline.  And I doubt Blizzard will have anything to do with it.  They couldnt even keep their WoW code secure.  Much less this.

WoW server code is quite secure.

The way the emulated servers work is that they know how the server reacts to the client by playing the client. So they re-created the responses. Which is why, for the most part, you have certain abilities that just dont work right and many more that function similiarly but have issues. The server code is essentially replicated by reverse engineering the expected reactions of the client.

Starsiege: Tribes was just a beast of a game.

Tribes 2 and Tribes: Vengeance didn't do enough justice.

... The large scale combat that they were going to put into GA is going to end up in Tribes: Ascend. ....

They mentioned they couldn't add large scale to GA due to design and balance.  That and they wanted Tribes from the start. Now that they have what they want, lets hope they get thier dream.

I know I am licking my chops at both games. Firefall too!

The OP fails hard at his whole point.

Its not the class design or the design choices of freedom that remove uniqueness. Just being an MMO removes uniqueness.

Rift provides a very refreshing taste of uniqueness. The class and skill combinations provided give a HUGE variety to choose from in your desired play style and role.

Will there be FOTM builds for specific things? Yes. But thats every game. Get over it.

Giving freedom of choice and easy access to it provides massive benefits over its negatives. If you force players to stick with what they choose and make it difficult to change, you greatly reward time played in the game and punish casual and new players that make mistakes or dont know what they are doing.

The freedom of choice with easy access lets a new player make mistakes. Lets a casual do as they will. Lets people be ok with screwing up and redo it without rerolling. Sure it means that FOTM will be more obvious and more people will pick it. But it also means you're going to see some pretty interesting builds out there that totally suck at 95% of what they encounter but you just cant beat them or come close to them during the 5% of the time the build was designed for.

I like the system. I like the game. Basically, I'm glad somebody took the popular 3 talent tree system Blizzard basically set as standard and tweaked it into a better system.

The game feels like WoW redone. Not just reskinned, but redone.

Im also not saying this in a bad way. There is a lot from WoW thats very good for MMOs.

So far, nothing about Rift appears to be innovative in any dramatic way. Rather, there is many subtle innovations and improvements upon many already successful elements. I like the game. But I also like WoW.

I dont understand why people insist on taking this overly literal.

Because 5x elementalist can complete a dungeon fairly well doesn't mean that they can just as well as any other team comp.

Actually... I think they want to make it so it doesnt matter your team comp, anything will be doable.

I think the goal Anet wants to accomplish is that some classes will do better in certain situations. Not nessicarily roles, but situations.

I've seen both sides of the coin. And been on both.

I've been in a very helpful guild and in a not-very helpful guild. Same guild actually. It morphed and split. Lotta drama.

Now I see things differently and am just having fun with RL friends and family in WoW. We just hang out and help eachother out. No drama. No need to rush for latest and greatest gear.

I've run plenty of 5-man where a really undergeared person was basically carried as worthless. I dont mind. If I outgear them and I run a random and he's poorly geared and doesnt know jack from squat and tells me, cool. I'll help him. If he's poorly geared and causing problems, then I dont hesitate to vote yes to that kick.

Its a matter of make what you will of it.

You want a helpful guild? Stay in a city and watch trade for one of the guild adds to pop in and check it out. Or create one yourself.

I cant tell you how many "helping" guilds I've seen. Ones that specify saying they want players new to the game.

Bingbongbros: The world change is, afaik, for Everyone.. Even those that don't even own TBC.. However, to get past level 60 I believe you'll need to buy TBC - and to get to level 85 I believe you have to buy both WotLK and Cataclysm.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. ^^

To experience 1-60 you need the base game. From 60-70 content, you need TBC. For 70-80 content, you need WotLK. For 80-85 content, you need Cata.

I do not know if you can buy vanilla and Cata and be able to get past to 85 or past 60. And either way, it may not be possible to level if you cant access the appropriate leveled mobs as you only get exp in a 7 level range. +3 and -3 from current level if I am correct.

What they want to do is right and i can get fully behind it. However it won't work and here is why:

Scenario is healing a hero instance in blue gear. Earlier stuff is just to easy, and Raids don't make a good example because there are several healers involved and that purple gear ... well GC summed it up nicely what it does.

1. There was a hell of a difference in successrates. Sometimes an instance run had no wipe at all, and i didn't even have to drink once even though the tank had like 16k hp. The next run the group broke up after the third wipe on the first boss because of the crappy healer.

2. Success or fail do not depend on the healer usually, hes just the one getting the blame. True, a good healer can save some situations a bad healer can't, but at the end of the day its up to the tanks and dps wether a run is a success or not. Wipe usually happen due two two reasons a) honest human error b) because the healer was placed in a situation by the group which was impossible to heal. In 90% of situations, when the tank keeps aggro and uses his damage reduction skills at the appropiate times, the dps kill stuff decently fast and everyone uses their skills(like CC or interrupt/silence) its impossible to wipe due to bad healing even if your healer is in green gear.

3. The healer still gets the blame. Really i have seen it far to often, purple clad deathknight with horrible spec turning frontal cone AoE mobs toward the group, not using his damage reductions supported by an anemic dps retribution pally and mages who wouldn't know what a sheep looked like if it bit their family jewels go blaming the healer because he only outgears the instance by 30 ilvls.

Healers get the blame if they fail to execute their heals(and people die), yet i have never seen anybody every question a Paladin tank who didn't use his damage reduction bubble during a frenzy phase of a boss fight. Even though that would probably pretend more damage than any two "oh shit" skills of a healer combined.

As long as this discrepancy exists, making healers walk the line will only lead to one thing: People blaming the healers for their own errors.

I mostly play a tank and I cant tell you how many wipes and deaths and dpser deaths ive witnessed in heroics and raids due to crappy heals.

I've also seen a lot of retarded dpsers cause wipes that couldnt be healed or tanks do dumb crap as well. But I wouldnt say that healers are over-blamed.

Really though, crappy healers will be ever more obvious when changes occur to make it harder. Just like the tanking and threat changes exposed crappy tanks like never before.

Crappy healers exist. Just like crappy dpsers and crappy tanks. But really an instance is run by 2 people or groups. Tanks and healers. They are what decides what happens. DPS has little to no say. They hardly do much to help or hurt situations compared to tanks and healers.

And honestly, its sad to see someone try to excuse healers by saying its the tanks fault for overpulling or dps fault for not doing what they can. I've seen plenty of times where I had to blow all my cooldowns and use every trick in the book I could for easy pulls because a healer was bad.

I've played UO for countless hours. From very early on in its life too where some professions were unheard of to "GM"

I've played SWG and EVE and WoW. EVE least of all.

I've tried some F2P MMOs as well. They never really gave me interest.

But I truely had fun SWG pre-CU. I truely still have fun playing WoW. I stopped playing UO when I started with SWG. EVE was fun for a bit but I never had the time needed to really enjoy it.

But WoW I enjoy. I have fun. And all that "work" is the fun for me. I do things within the game that is fun. Like make a few hundred gold a day for a few days. Then spend it all on dumb crap. Then go for obscure achievements for the sake of doing it and nothing else.

Really, I enjoy the game I play and if I get bored I switch to something else. Like a different toon or game. Play that for a bit and go back to the MMO.

Its what I do to relax.

Am I a hardcore raider? I don't want to be, but I can be if I did want to.

The key is to do what you enjoy. If you dont enjoy MMOs, dont play them. But I find them fun and much of the gameplay fun. Are there boring parts? Yes. But any game has them.

What a salad of an article.

All fluff. Really, read the report availabe yourself and you can come up with your own conclusions.

With what the teaser info provides, it can be skewed in many ways.

And 10,000 sample size is fairly good.

Consider that political polls in the US are generally about 1000 people and the US pop is over 300 million and they tend to be fairly accurate.

However, I'd like to see large sample sizes myself if the 10,000 is global rather than per region/country.

I am certain the full $1,400 report contains considerable detail and breakdown and is well worth the investment to businesses in the market.

I usually log into voice, talk only when needed. I tend to tank and as a tank it really helps to be able to call things out, but I rarely talk. And I do tune out blabber until I hear my name.

Heck, there are plenty of occasions in which I'd prefer to type to someone sitting in the same room as me than to speak to them. Sometimes its just easier. Not much needs to be said and the answer should be short? Just type.

Though, I can honestly say I've always found it "cool" to play with a female gamer. Its really mostly that I like to listen to female voices over male voices. Its less about the fact that you're female for me and more that your voice is more pleasant to hear. Accent or not.

And I flirt only if flirted with.

Delete the huntard and we can talk.

But I am looking forward to many things in the new patch.

For one, I cant wait to fly in Classic world.

Gonna make bank picking up the larger variety of mats flying from one zone to a city or another zone.

I used to be interested in MO. Over a year ago.

Then, as I watched the game develop and the Beta moved on, I saw enough red flags that caused me to avoid this.

Sorry, but if they pre-sell the game and dont deliver promised CD's for months that should be warning enough. Then, to top that off, when the packages were received they contained a version of the client that did not work and that could not be patched to work (i dont know if it was later fixed).

To hear all of this BS and to hear the CEO say some of these things and to listen to current state of the game posts, even if 1% of all the bad is true, this game isn't worth the money compared to what is out there already.

From the sound of this interview, the CEO just doesn't get it. He just doesn't have vision or design concept.

He wants a piece of this and a piece of that, has no idea how to meld them or work them into his game.

A player-run economy needs to have tools that work with the game and meld with the game. It sounds like they wanted the game so "hardcore" that it actually prevents an economy.

Oh, and I have to comment on one thing from the OP. You might want to educate yourself on a game you make fun of. WoW doesn't have player housing. There are no door guards or player-owned spaces in the game. And this feature could be found in fairly early UO, which is a game that MO is heavily influenced by.

There are multiple tiers of players.

Generally its split into two major categories. The Pubbers and the Competition players.

In the pubber realm you have this big slushy mix of good, bad, horribad and needs-to-uninstall. Competion players almost always are better than nearly all pubbers.

This is true for a large number of shooters.

Back in Counter-Strike before Source or even 1.6 I used to play competition. I couldnt play in pubs. I got banned and accused left-right and center for hacking.

Goes for any shooter. Your high-tier players will just ruin pub games and look like cheaters.

Not saying there isnt cheaters out there. Because there are. But I'd wager that a large % of people you think are cheaters really dont.

Your argument turns nothing on its head.  In fact, it's insipid.  The East Coast lives 3 hours ahead.  How fair is it for us to celebrate the New Year 3 hours early every year?  But we do... Why?  Because that is our schedule and time zone.  Basically, the East Coast gets NO midnight launch.

 Stop whining

Nobody except PST players get a midnight launch. Nobody.

If you want a hard copy, you still get it at midnight. Otherwise, just go to bed and wake up at 3am to get your launch. Seriously. The QQing is just pathetic about this.

Blizzard is a west coast company. They are working with their time zone. You want a midnight launch? Move out west.

I live in the midwest. Do you know what the midwest is? Nothing. They are called fly-over-states for a reason because everything is either East Coast or West Coast. The only thing I get is my uber Chicago-style Pizza which blows anything from out East out of the water.

In fact... I'm going to take Dec 7th off just to wake up at 2am to play Cata all day.

Blizzard is intentionally doing it this way. This isnt a botch.

I think people keep comparing someone just calling a person a name once or some equivalent, harassment.

Harassment is when someone doggedly goes out of their way to belittle, berate, or molest them on a repeated and regular basis. It is when a person does everything they can to attempt hurt someone else. We're not talking about one little argument or altercation.

It is unreasonable for a person to tell someone to simply absorb that sort of behavior and dealt with it. It has nothing to do with the generation, it has nothing to do with privledges, it has nothing to do with coping mechanisms.

What is has to do with is right and wrong and the rights of the person being harassed. It has to do with basic human decency and respect. It's clear that typical legal consquences are probably not reasonable. But, I think when a person goes out of their way to be as hateful and perverse as possible to another person they deserve to suffer consequences.

Losing their rights to electronic communcation of any type for a certain duration seems like a good start.

I've played games where I've seen rampant racism, hate speech, and other disgusting behavior. From how often this behavior takes place, it's pretty clear that the companies involved do a very poor job at trying to maintain an acceptable environment. Most people would not act or speak the way they do in these games in a public place in person and those that would are debase cretins.

It's ridiculous they'd think it's okay anywhere.

Even if companies made up results and posted them on the main page or forums stating "In an effort to enforce our terms of service 20 accounts were banned for x, y, and z violations. Please, reread the ToS and be aware of the terms you have agreed with to play. Users in violations of the ToS will find themselves subject to punitive measures" they'd have some results in cutting down the numerous violations. Or they they made it noticable that they are monitor chat, even for a second, it would make a difference.

Treating someone else like garbage just because it makes you giggle is not okay, ever.

There is a lot of correct things said here.

However, as much as could be said about seeking and punishing the offender. The issue arises that is isnt feasible to curb or reduce the overall offenses through enforcement or bringing bigger threats into play.

Any arguement that attempts to parallel the online world into real-world analogies usualy fail hard. As does this case with someone calling your phone. That you can call your phone provider and have that number blocked. Or file a police report and have it blocked and in continued cases an actual legal action. In the online world, there are so many more tools available to defend yourself.

IMHO the best approach is to disarm the capability of the harasser. Not to seek and punish him. If you remove his power, then there is no harm. The balance is that by focusing on RL punishment, you empower the harasser. By educating the average user in defense, you disarm the harasser.

It is far too rare for a case to be serious enough to include law enforcement. And the more you try to involve law enforcement, you find more instances of people abusing and flooding the system with trivial or false or exaggerated cases.

For the most part, most of the perceived sexual harassment is legal in terms of law.

Rarely is something said or done that actually breaks a US law thats enforced. (I use the term enforced because fornication is still considered illegal in some states, tell me the last time you heard of someone being charged with fornication).

On top of that, it likely wouldn't be a criminal issue where an arrest would be made.

Lastly, the sexual harassment described in previous posts all have protections and Real World consequences already. The mentioned situations are against the rules in nearly every game I've played. Now, rules arn't laws. And the Real World consequences are usually the company taking action against the player in terms of account access.

It's seriously dangerous of people to try and consider bringing law into the games. Sexual harassment in games can and should be reported using the provided methods of protection by the game. That is part of what is paid for when you give the company your money. And if its F2P and you dont use the item shop, don't get upset if you don't see results.

And for those of you who scoff at someone saying "use the ingore list or report button", really grow up. The game is a form of entertainment and socialization. Use reporting features. Use ignore. If that doesn't work, cut off that person's access to yourself. Ultimately it is on you to protect yourself from the harm if all other options are failing. That means moving servers or games. You are not forced to be on a specific server or game. If someone in a game is causing you grief and detracting from your fun, then get rid of what isnt fun and find something that is fun.

Control what you can. Recognize what isn't in your control. Learn the difference between the two.

The game's concept seems right up my alley.

However, I've been following it for a while and cant seem to avoid all the negative hype. And after reading about some of the main coders prior experience(one this is his first game. He coded milk machines prior to working on MO), I find it hard to believe the game is better than the hype.

To top it off, hearing some of the antics of the CEO doesn't bother me, but his financial report does.

Sorry, but I wont give my money to a company for a product that is sub-par to other products of the same price. I put my money where I get the most value from it. And the fact that the game has so many problems deters me.

Also, no US server? No thanks. I like decent ping. No game is worth playing laggy.

The players should worry about Producer and the Director of Content Development if they were happy with the direction the game was going and how well patches were coming along as well as what kind of contect was being pushed.

Thats IF they were happy. Otherwise, the fresh meat in those positions may take the game in a better direction. I hope for the best despite never playing this game. Sad to hear any MMO in trouble.
