Agreed.

I facepalmed hard when I read that line.

I think he actually believes himself victim of some sort of injustice. It's also a comment that is completely unrelated to the article as a whole or even the point he was trying to make.

I think your title needs to be tweaked then.

MMOs are games. By definition, you are goofing off by logging in. The mere premise that you goof off within the game assumes there is a job or task that must be completed other than what you are currently doing.

I enjoy my time in MMOs. How much time do I spend not "progressing" depends entirely on the game and what's available vs fun for me at the moment.

Also, between your two questions, that can differ greatly depending on which MMO you use as a reference. It also depends on how you define "I play the game" as how I play the game is decidedly different than how my friend plays the game which is different than how his fiance plays the game. Unless you define playing the game as the persuit of end-game content, which again can vary greatly depending on MMO.

Take EVE Online for example. How would "I play the game" vs "I go into the game and play" differ? To some, playing the game is done almost as much on forums as in game. To others, its amassing ISK. To some people, its harassing and to more people they want to build a self-sustaining corp.

Next up, WoW. There is acheivement hunters, PVPers, Raiders, Pet Battlers, Mount Hoarders, Crafters and Rare Item Collectors where all of those things are playing the game to them.

Even in linear themepark games with limited gameplay other than PVP and PVE there are people who play the game differently.

@ OP... Why do you let your son who is 7 play WoW???

Let him play in the real world and socialize!!

Playing WoW and socializing in the real world are not, as many people seem to think, mutually exclusive.

This doesn't sound like anything specific to WoW. It sounds like you attract drama and are attracted to drama. GW2 won't rid you of finding immature players or having your time taken advantage of by others. You need to manage those things yourself by making better choices with the people you socialize with.

you are wrong. as soon as i started it i saw how childish little punks most were. video games are supposed to be fun, but so many of them took it so seriously that they literally hate you and get their little 'cliques' poking at you too, if you dont agree with them or do what they say. i did meet many people i liked along the way, and the last server i was on, which is where all of this story came from, there were many more mature people than i had found on other servers, which is why i was there. and ya, i know gw2 will have the same types of people, you cant possibly be stupid enough to think i dont know that and would be using this as an excuse. i didnt even read up on gw2 until end of july, and i had already pretty much decided i was quitting warcraft before then. things just happened to come together rather nicely.

this had nothing to do with my social skills. the cpl of guilds i was in before i made a bank had decent people, i simply had things i wanted to do on my own that didnt need these people with me, and i didnt need anyones help. but if youre not in a guild with a bunch of people you are looked at strangely if you dont constantly raid with them, or go out front to duel them, etc. i wasnt into raids, where you do the exact same thing day in day out until you finally beat a boss. mobs are in the exact same place, you do the exact same thing every time; theres nothing special about that. you know how to repeat the exact same action around every corner and know what to expect every time? yay. doesnt get any more boring. i was hardcore pvp, theres absolutely nothing predictable about that; and because i didnt raid, i only started getting some semblance of respect, because few knew me personally, after i got my 100k hk ach n title. so im supposed to be a predictable little 'l33t' raider prick and hang in a group of them whether i like that or not like everyone else? pfffft.

i never asked you or anyone for any advice, so that you can shove. this was 100% experience in warcraft man. i have a life, and im on video games for fun, not to get my blood pressure raging because little johnny j***off is mad at being grounded and takes it out on his game.

Brenacus,

Basically Denambren is saying that none of your mentioned problems have anything to do with the game World of Warcraft and entirely the people you associated with. The way you type these posts with a complete disregard for the shift key and overuse of the comma key in addition to the specifics provided, I agree with him totally. You either are attracted to drama or are the catalyst for drama around others. Many of your problems you described could be alleviated by a change in your behavior. Your distaste for raiding in a guild could be avoided entirely by joining a pvp guild. A desire for compensation for running guildmates through instances is either unfounded, unrealized or easily avoided by not doing that activity.

I also agree with Tenkousei as being spot on. I can't agree more.

It wont matter what game you choose, the communities will eat you alive if you let them. Hello Kitty Online might be an exception, you can try that and report back. Otherwise learn to stand up for yourself, avoid putting yourself in stressful situations or avoid associating with people that don't improve your experience. And believe it or not, improving your writing will attract different people.

Really. Sooo, i know nothing of "how to build a car" but when i see malfunctioning car in the street i can easily call it crap, because i dont really care how of why its not working good.

And i looooove claims "i get 30+ FPS most of the time". Here is eye opener for you: when game cannot support 10+ FPS at MOST IMPORTANT times its a deal breaker, standing somewhere on some planet alone is irrelevant. Same as fanbois who claimed at launch they get "constant 100+ FPS" with waaaay crappier hardware.

Here is fun fact for ya:

SWTOR has 2007 graphics. It should run flawlessly on any 2010+ machine with above low end graphic card even with 50/50-100/100 people on your screen. There are MMOs with DX11 graphics out there that run without problems in any situation with bells and whistles that SWTOR can only dream of. Hell, it took em what, 4-5 months just to enable high res textures. Hpw pathetic is that, eh?

Engine is crap, plain and simple, and with "state of the game" SWTOR is in i seriously doubt they gonna rewrite it and fix all that needs to be fixed, so yah.

I'd argue the average person knows a bit more about cars then they do about the fundamentals of game engines.

Listen, I have never had a problem running TOR.  I'm not arguing you or others did;  that sucks and I don't know what else to say.  The bottom line is, you can spout all these theories you want but it doesn't make any sense to me because of the two machines I use to play it, I have never had an issue.   I'm not just going to blindly agree with you because it may be the popular thing around here to hate on TOR.

I've had fps issues with numerous games over the years when too many characters fill the screen.  What caused that?  Not entirely sure, but I'm not going to make an uneducated conclusion that the engine itself is to blame.

Let me ask you this.  Have you worked with the engine?  I'm not talking about playing games on it.  I'm asking have you worked with its code and actually worked with it on a base level?

Based on your two posts here I'd bet money you dont work on graphics engines yourself. Nor do you sound like you know much about what you're talking about other than attempting to tear down the arguements of others and sit in a corner covering your ears with your hands going "LA LA LA LA LA". Instead of making an uneducated conclusion, educate yourself and come to the conclusion the best fits the problem. Sometimes its the game. Sometimes its you. Sometimes its a driver. Sometimes its an ISP. Many different problems can have many different symptoms and conclusions to draw from them. But the reality here is you were just presented with an article with source links about how the game engine isn't performing on par to where it should be. It's not the education of the user thats lacking if you refuse to agree on a particular problem even if said problem doesn't appear to be bothering you (even if it affects you and you are quite possibly unaware or you have a higher tolerance to it as it doesn't impact your gameplay as it does others).

The reality here is that there is smoke coming from under SWTOR's hood. People are blaming the engine because of several factors which can be backed up. Also, the absolute overwhelming anecdotal evidence on the forums at launch are testament to optimization porblems. The disabling of Ilum further evidence.

Your two machines might be just lucky to fall into approved configurations that were optimized. It doesn't mean there aren't problems with the engine. And graphics engines aren't some sort of fantastical being that is beyond understanding for anyone who hasn't actually worked in the code.

Hell, the vast majority of programming doesn't need a programmer to understand it, use it or identify problems with it.

Two of the reasons I left SWTOR is the loading screens and unreliabile performance. I don't need to crack open source code for the engine used to understand its the engine's problem when the frame rates are so unreliable. The point of optimization is to allow the game to perform better under the same circumstances with the same hardware.

I recently went back to WoW. Started on a new server with some friends. Began to level all over again and found the experience quite enjoyable and fun. The game has so much to offer for those that dont just consume content as fast as they can click.

I've honestly been waiting for the day that a hardware review was posted that Quizzical completely and utterly dismantled.

This has made working on Sunday worth it!

Claim to be after the Console market but make the game for less than half of it (no Xbox) = fail

The reason it's not on xbox is simple and already explained by CCP and many other MMO developers that try to make the game interact with their world.

Microsoft, believe it or not, is far more frustrating and limiting in how thier network interacts with the CCP servers. Sony was more accomodating. So the choice was more technical than anything else.

So instead of going on the offensive and blasting them for something you clearly don't know about, try to read up on it first. So their claim is justified by going after console market.

Secondly, the PC to console cross-platform doesn't exist for shooters. It makes more sense to make the game for consoles rather than after the PC due to the larget market and chance of a viable population for it to work.

That and they wont cannibalize their current playerbase (though It isn't likely due to EVE being quite far removed from FPS).

I really do hope the game is successful. That will make for much more interesting and dynamic gaming worlds in the future as this is, in a way, a proof of concept for other companies to look at and replicate.

Windows8 is, as someone else correctly mentioned, is the 2012-Vista. No one uses, as far as I'm aware, touchscreen monitors, and there's been no market push towards touchscreen monitors to even go in this direction.

I've had the unfortunate task of setting up a dev environment with visual studios 2010 on Windows8 to test for our company if it is worth upgrading to.

Long story short, our company of 2500 some odd employees will be staying with Windows7 professional for QUITE some time, or until Windows9 releases and is not a wholesum pile of crap. Yes, you can "disable" that 'metro' aka 'modern' view & use a semi-functional desktop like windows7, but there are absolutely ZERO upgraded benefits from windows7 if not some detriments.

So I'm not entirely sure why anyone is even considering Win8 for a desktop PC as it is clearly meant for mobile application use.

This is what I'm not understanding. A huge part of the market is business use. It almost seems that every other release is a consumer vs business target.

I still call Eve the overall winner. UO has lots of decorative stuff in it but a hell of a lot less meat.

Kilkaedenas,

Your counter-arguement fails no matter how right you are. I've played both UO and EVE. And I must say I clearly had more fun in one over the other, but thats because I was playing EVE wrong (its a social game. Solo play stagnates). I have nothing against EVE and would go back to it if I magically find a few hours a day to devote to it.

Anyway, the reason your arguement fails and always will is that EVE, being the niche space game it is, can't compete with rose-tinted glasses and nostalgia.

Anyway, I'd love to find a new MMO that melds great aspects of UO, SWG, EVE and modern innovation. There are a great many things in those three games that if taken into a new game could be greatness. The issue is finding people to do it and without allowing massive griefing and bugginess.

Laptops are very very expensive for gaming performance in comparison to desktops. On top of that, many laptops designed to play games have abysmal battery life and aren't exactly light and easy to carry from class to class.

Your best bet is to list what you need/want.

If you go for laptop only, what do you need the laptop for?

Can you do desktop only?

If you go with a combination, what do you need the laptop capable of? If all you need is a laptop to take notes in class, you can go cheaper than 400.

Also, what kind of graphic settings are you looking to acheive? Do you want it playable and don't care about much else?

The best option is to have a laptop for school and desktop for gaming if you want to crank the most out of your budget. This will allow for some upgrades when the budget expands. With a laptop, you're pretty much stuck with what you buy until you replace it.

I'm pretty sure this game has been made...

It's called LIFE. Go outside. Take a stroll to your local market. Those aren't NPCs behind the counter. Head to the police station. Again, more player characters and not NPCs. Oh, and if you want you can test that perma-death idea too...

Geez... Way to lose sight of the purpose of a game. A real-life simulating game where you need masses of players to create the world and content also requires incentives to do such a thing and be entertaining to do it. All of the elements have to come together for a purpose and be fun. Many games have bits and pieces of what you've suggested. I know MO has been tossed out there. But another one similiar is EvE Online.

The notion that any organization, public or private, is more likely free of corruption than taking part in it in at least some way, is absurd beyond the point of bothering to argue about it.

Who the fuck cares why the ESRB exists if it can be done by profit-motivated private organization than power-motivated government?

Allowing the private company to do its thing is fine. There is nothing wrong with a rating system on games that measures the potential offensiveness of games. It keeps the mouths of countless parents shut and out of your way.

I'd even contend that the ESRB provides more benefit than it does in hurting anything.

Blizzard isn't a bank. They don't lend out depositor money or invest it to make a profit. How much of a fee is appropriate depends on overhead. Doing a lot of small transactions carries a high overhead. The money goes in the money goes out. The volume, size, and percentages of these transactions are peanuts.

So you know they dont invest it?

Given the fee, we can assume people will either use the money to buy blizz products or keep it there as long as possible, or do you see players paying in 5 bucks every week and withdrawing it? As for the "inner" overhead of running the ah, we already payed a good chunk of that within our 60 bucks a box. The rest depends on paypal fees, which has a extensive plan, probably negotiable for someone like blizz, in the end, in numbers with a bulk business discount on their page, 4.9% for 10 bucks to 2% for 250, so 10-13% for blizz, without any special deal from paypal.

Flame on!

:)

They invest what they earn in making games. The auction house may provide a small cashflow but they don't play the market withany of their cash. If they need to use the profits from box sales to support the auction house that would indicate they were losing money not making it.

The red highlights are false statements.

Firstly, the money in your Blizzard account isn't depositor money. You cannot withdraw it. You are essentially buying a gift card or store credit. Blizzard isn't a bank, but that doesn't mean they don't invest money.

Check out the freaking quarterly reports. Activision-Blizzard holds close to half a billion dollars in investments. Your money sitting in their coffers makes them money. Sure, they will list it as a liability, but its still cash sitting in their bank.

Oh, I almost forgot a source or something that can back up what I say.

I used to play both. In fact, I used to be a HoN fanboy and hate on LoL.

I tried LoL for a bit. Played both for a while and found myself logging into HoN less and less and now I don't even have it installed.

IDK it just works, League of legends was pretty meh, then once it went free to play it shot up to number 1 and I encounter players all over the place now.  It released 3 years ago but only recently became the top game.

League of Legends was always free to play. It's been growing like Mario on shrooms since launch too.

(1) How many people do you know  who have been contacted by Gallup for a poll?

(2) Do any of your buds got a  Neilson box on his TV ? Just personaly speaking I have to answetr zero to both of those questions, however that does not mean they are inaccurate

That being said  I would not compare game A to game B by the Xfire numbers but it can be a accurate indicator of the game to itself. When a game clims higher in Xfire then more people who  are also Xfire users are playing it, when it falls lower fewer players who also use Xfire are playing it

The best indicator of a games overall popularity in my opinion is the web traffic it recieves. You can track that using Alexa http://www.alexa.com/  and Quantcast tools http://www.quantcast.com/. Another good indicator is Google trends http://www.google.com/trends/

This to a degree.

Its less about the X-Fire data being useless and more about the vast majority of assumptions misinterpreting the data and makeing false claims with the data.

The warning is pointless without saying what you are warning against actually is. Or if it even exists.

Perception is a funny thing, ain't it?

LoL is a great reference to point at from both sides of this aisle as both cases of truly OP releases as well as completely balanced releases being touted as OP and even a few UP releases touted as OP have happened. The funny thing is, it is largely perception.

What tends to happen in live games where content is added that is supposedly "balanced" with everything else is that you introduce an unknown tool or element to the mix. This unknown tool or element can appear overpowered if there is a burden of knowledge on the opponent to understand and counter this new tool or element.

This gives the perception of being overpowered (or less noticeably, underpowered) for a period of time. The nerf or adjustment may happen or may not and usually this vastly "OP" tool or element becomes much less so over the time in which the majority of the userbase learnes to understand the uses or counters to the newly introduced tool or element.

This isn't to say Hi-Rez is or isn't doing anything. But a fancy way of saying: Back up your accusations. Give some solid examples that display this pattern.

I play Tribes. From one day to the next, I've not seen any consistant gun, class or build clearly dominate.

Well, the buisness suits who run blizzard have come out with what a lot of us know...D3 has no endgame and should only be played through once or twice at most, and here is their offical txt on the matter:

"We recognize that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game. ... but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun... But honestly Diablo III is not World of Warcraft. We aren't going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it's not there right now.

We're working toward 1.0.4, which we're really trying to pack with as many fixes and changes we can to help you guys out ... and we're of course working on 1.1 with PvP arenas. I think both those patches will do a lot to give people things to do, and get them excited about playing, but they're not going to be a real end-game solution, at least not what we would expect out of a proper end-game. We have some ideas for progression systems..."

It's no WoW folks...we all need to move on from it acording to Blizzard.

Does that mean D3 is a fail... feel free to discuss folks :)

Your conclusions are so fail I dont know how to respond...

There is absolutely nothing in the blue text to support anything I marked red. In fact, more is mentioned to counter your statement than confirm it.
