I totally will agree with everyone who supports WAR after several years of equal or more sucess compared to WoW. I don't even like WoW but I can face the fact that it makes big bucks in comparison the games I play.

Alot of people get attached to games in way similiar to how people are attached to old friends I guess. Some gamers get to the point where they are as close to the game as they would to a person they completely know. So I can understand that people hate developers like Sony Online Entertainment because the connection to their products are deeper than people like who are not as outraged at these companies. What I'm trying to say is SOE never liked it's customers as much as it's customers liked it's games. No developer has go to further than pleasing the community enough to bring in the money. Not that developers are all about the money but they just don't need to care about gamers as much all the vocal haters seem to think.

Game companies are very much like celebrities. We say "Oh, oh, Mr.SOE give us some more high level instance and maybe a new race or something please." just like a fan would go "Oh, oh, Mr.Lucas please make Star Wars Episode 7."

So when your life is ruined by the next "betrayal(internet sarcasm)" move Sony makes don't hate, don't even feel bad. Just hold your chin up high say "I've been cheating on you with Relic anyway" and leave (insert whatever game). But know that as soon you've dumped your next developer that Sony and Mr.Smedley are ready to take you back into their arms.

If the majority of vocal players say "instancing is useless, remove or die" then the developers may remove it. But I don't see that happening for Stargate Worlds or other mmorpgs since removal of instancing doesn't really benefit players and sure as heck makes developers jobs harder. I'm not saying developers shouldn't work for their money but removal of instances does make for alot less variety in gameplay.

I'll decide when sufficient information on the 3rd mmo comes out. I have not major problem with Funcom's last and would still give the newest one a chance if I hated both. Afterall I still look to The Agency regardless of SOE's many follies.

The one thing that developers can't change is how they're customers behave in the game. Sure logically if a boss would give any exp or drops to me because it's not my quest I would logically leave it alone but not all people don't make choices based on logic. Like every other gamer killing stuff that you are able to kill is an instinct. I don't care if you have to kill this boss to get the ultra-super-mega-special weapon I'm gonna take my P-90 blow the living heck out of it and move on my merry way. A bad developer says "oh you freaking idiots you're not playing my game right you don't get any goddamn benefits from doing that don't do it!" A good developer goes "oh it looks like some of my customers are jerks...ah well let's seperate them so they don't have an oppurtunity to that again"

I'm proud at least that a thread of this nature has not become a battleground for the more zealous of game enthusiasts.

There is simply too much going on in a large MMO for servers to handle without extreme lag.

So I suggest you buy a console game.

QFT.  Yeah, instancing is the way of the future, especially if more games try to release cross platform, consoles and PC's.

But also, unlilely the SGW Devs will spot this hear, suggest you raise it on their forums

It's true the developers are unlikely to ever even look at these forums but does not every flamer think that his/her flame has burned the entire internets?Does not every hater think that their hatred runs deep and that trolls have made everyone stop playing a particular game in one swift revolutionary post?

Ahhh... I get it. Your gripe is two fold.

1) You hate raiding. Whether its an instance or not, a Guild Leader (GL) or committee of some kind will determine whether or not you get any loot. This is VERY common. Games like Wow, EQ, etc.... any game that has raids is going to have this. Not everyone can get every item. Someone is going to lose and it sounds like you don't like losing.

2) I definately get the impression that you don't like PvE games or PvP games where folks can opt all the out of the PvP part of a game. Games like Neocron which are mostly open PvP (a few zones are non-PvP) where a player who puts in his Law Enforcer chip and thus opts out of PvP entirely would probably anger you as well. How dare the devs not allow you to gank someone!

I seriously doubt that you meant to ... but you are coming off as a spoiled little brat who is threateningto pick up his toys and go home if he doesn't get his way. No where in your original post do you try to gather support for your cause. No where do you list any benefits to having zones instead of instances. You present no reasons what-so-ever why anyone should support your position. If you want a better example of how to gather support, read the various anti-PvP articles posted throughout MMORG.com. Many folk have gone to great lengths to state their reasons and have presented the benefits of al strictly PvE game. Whether you agree with them or not, you will see several people taking their side and supporting their position. If you want to gather support for a particular idea, at the very least you must give solid reasons as to why your view is a valid one and state the benefits of that idea.

Very good points indeed and even though I agree with them I'll play the devil's adovocate for the sake of keeping this rather intresting thread alive.

Raidless, pve only games with no instancing and a fully persistent world invite a more casual gaming audience perhaps younger children and middle age adults which is a gaming market not really tapped into by most MMOs. I'm not saying we make a gaming that's utterly unattractive to regular non-casual and hardcore gamers. But use the revenue from that untouched demographic to make a more hardcore version of the game we've already made. So when the children become teens or when the adults have a midlife crisis and a need to become cool we'll have a game that is familiar enough to bring them back to us time and time again.

However I dont want general zones instanced. What Age of Conan did went too far. I play MMO's for the Massive part. I dont want to be seperated by a mirrored instance of that same zone. Its a cheap excuse to allow developers to code an inferior product.

Im not buying the excuses and frankly saddened to see that some players have. Advanced servers and coding can handle 5000 or more around without lagging so stop lying to us. Hell, EVE can handle 25,000 on a single server. Many games 5 yrs old+ have little to zero instancing and had great graphics for their time.

I expect SGW to have loading screens when I take a stargate to another world. What I demand though is that I better load into the same dam world as everyone else does. If that isnt the case, I will immediately cancel (or never purchase the game if I learn of this before).

I play MMO's, not MO's thank you very much

I agree I want to be able to go to any planet and see people there that I don't know I also want to go into the depths of a alien tyrants base and fight him one on one without ever coming into contact with some random gun-happy idiot that would kill the boss for the sheer heck of it.

It's more likely we're going to see the return of Kung Fu-Action Jesus than SUN in english.

Update: Yes what I said was completely true since I just found out that I was Kung Fu-Action Jesus and that the Chinese and Taiwanese versions have changed their registration and download process to make it harder for those who don't read Chinese. And the Korean version of course requires a KSSN.

I think some instancing on highly contested boss mobs is required, I will never again play a game like Everquest which had people who "farmed" the same drop for hours and days at a time.

Instancing isn't required to solve that problem. Only a retarded developer would think it is.

It's real simple. Instead of boss mob dropping a unique tradeable one of a kind item, boss mob drops a no trade quest item which each player character can only qualify for once when accepting the quest. The boss mob only drops x copies of said quest item for x amount of players in group who are triggered for the quest and quest items can only be redeemed once by each character who qualified for the quest via certain level/skill/faction minimum requirements. Boss mob drops nothing else, no items, no coin, and gives no experience when killed.  Now there is no motivation to camp boss mob and he can have a fast respawn time so no bottleneck exists.

Turn in quest item to questgiver in city for the unique tradeable item.

The reason developers don't choose this system over instancing is pure laziness. It's easier to create an instance than code a few mechanics.

I don't think it's laziness I think limiting the amount of times you can get a item, a unique item no less, is a bad game mechanic. Because people will fight over who gets to finsh off the boss regardless of whether it will benefit or not. Having several people after the same boss in the same area, which will occur in spite of fast respawn times if the game is popular, will not mean they will interact with each other. People in a group in an instance have a unique experience as apposed to being able to see the boss, see people kill the boss, and any spoilers to the story that may come from being near the boss without actually fighting it. Now you said only people of a certain faction/skill/whatever level can recieve the quest I assume that means to be allowed to kill the boss which is fine. However if you can not even enter or come near the boss without a certain requirement that's pretty much a pseudo-instance.

Any smart game developer is not lazy. Developers of the less intillegent variety can be lazy but that doesn't matter because they make bad games with hard working attitudes too. On the other hand if a developer and his associates are smart and buisness savy they will never cut a corner from their product if it will significantly reduce sales.

Although I don't believe that graphics are more important than gameplay I do believe that nowadays good gameplay does mean you have to completely sacrifice graphics. With the way games are advance we're quite close to being able to "eat our cake and have it too" so to speak and personally just feels like a cake that won't be back in the box after you've finished eating it. Old games have merit but only classics hold ground.

The more players who play the game the easier it will be to fund the next expansion or update. I think some forms of instancing is a reasonable compromise for an overall succesfull game.

I think physical boundaries feel more limiting than invisible walls.

I think they're kind of like a 4th wall in the sense that crossing them would break the lots of important mechanics in game that make it seem more plausible ie: You can't swim in the water so you can't get to the over continents in Guild Wars. So I have to in a sense buy Factions so my character goes on a boat to Cantha. Otherwise I could be like why pay money when I can swim there for free biatch. Also I can't leave the Guild Island during a gvg and I dunno come back with an aggro of 50 devourers to kill the enemy team I guess. Games with maps that let you like swim to the edge of one side and appear on the otherside are more limiting in the sense that everything on your map is what is on the whole planet your on and adding a new continent with an expansion doesn't make to much sense unless you want to meddle with some really elaborate plotwist that brings Atlantis up from the ocean and so and so forth.

Players who can't play the game with a persisent world should still be able to play aswell as players who are on trial for breaking game EULA. I think game regulated instancing is a much better alternative to alienating players who won't have the means to play the game uninstanced. Whether the instancing is enforced by moderators/engine or player choice is debateable. Forcing players who probably will never participate in a game with one giant server doesn't work. Although it is valid to say that if they are given the choice players won't play in the large community server and will play in the private world thus you won't get the full experience of a single unified server community.

People just have to accept that this is how the game was built and that there is no chance Guild Wars will change every map just to suit the need of having seamless enviroments over easliy supportable instanced servers. Guild Wars 2 on the other hand is said to have a Z-axis so the situation will be resolved. It's not quite a game breaking problem anyhow unless you have horrid lag then you may disconnect from bodyblocking.
