Lucas Arts is coming out with a TV series that I do believe is NOT based on the clone wars era, but rather on the new comic book series which is 80yrs in the future of Return of the Jedi.  They have also announced (but not given a title, etc) that an MMO would be released inconjuction with the series release.

That's very good news, but I have never heard of such an announcement...do you have a link?

Good news indeed

I believe that it was common knowledge that the TV series ( and its hopefully concurrent MMO ) will be set in the years Between Eps 3 and 4 .  But as I reported in my Rodo report 2 and 4 (see below) There is a very High Probability that there will be a Knights of the Old Republic MMO from the Bioware/Lucas Arts partnership.

Its a wait and see scenerio to be sure but when better to make this annoucement about one or perhaps both MMOs then the Middle of August - When Lucas has the attention of all of the Fans with the release of the Clone Wars CGA movie. I am counting on it and its effect on the beleaguered NGE of SWG.

It makes perfect sense to me...hope that's the way it goes down. After all Lucas is a master marketeer. that SOB is like the Master Jedi of Sales!

An "inside" source posted a long thread on the forums in SEP 2005. The insider detailed what was about to happen almost as if it was a developer making the post. No one believed the guy and the thread was soon locked and yanked. But in the end he was right about everything.

Cut down in it's prime...

Star Wars Galaxies WAS the best game EVER made. The fact is, it was so advanced and innovative it will most likely be years before we even see a game like this announced again. It was really ahead of it's time and perhaps that's what contributed to the downfall

Bottom line...

It's the best game I have ever played (pre-CU). It was a game that allowed me to do anything. I could become anyone and go anywhere without restriction. This is a game that had such incredible depth and complexity. You could live your own story in this game. I have never seen a better game since, and I fear I never will again.

Yes! I know they were ahead of thier time. Everything I see now is just dumbed down bullshit. A chimp could master the current SWG. I only hope that the next Star Wars mmorpg will have even half of the old games elements. A true sandbox game with no classes...no limits!

Didn't Lucas say that the KOTOR IP "wouldn't get left behind?

Yup......LucasArts VP Nancy MacIntyre said this in 2006 > LINK

"as MacIntyre confirms: "We've also got Star Wars franchises like Knights of the Old Republic ... that we will not leave behind. It's very important to us that we grow those franchises."

+What also happend in 2006 was > LINK

"BioWare Licenses Simutronics HeroEngine for MMO Game Project, Austin Game Conference 2006"

regardless of that i still don't hope on a KOTOR MMO as everything what made me love Kotor simply can not be done....yet....and i feel it will also lose its strenght that it got from being a singleplayer RPG.

I would love to see a KOTOR 3 and a truly unique new type of MMORPG from bioware, prefured perhaps a complete new IP.

But still feel their safest bet would be a Clone Wars MMO.

I remember that

Bioware wants to innovate in MMOs
News by Oli Welsh

28 April, 2008

Speaking to Eurogamer, Bioware chief Ray Muzyka has said that the EA studio intends to bring innovation to massively multiplayaer gaming with its first MMO.

"We want to be innovators in the space," he said. "We're trying to bring some fresh stuff to the mix. We still have great reverence for a lot the great games, but we're also trying to add some new things."

Details of the game, currently in development at Bioware's Austin studio, remain a closely-guarded secret. Initial rumours that it might be a Star Wars MMO for LucasArts have lost momentum in recent months.

However, Muzyka did provide some hints as to what form the game will take, suggesting that it will concentrate on the strengths his company is known for, with particular focus on enhancing the narrative and character development side of massively multiplayer RPGs.

"Like all Bioware games, we're focusing on story, customisation, exploration, combat... I think it would be really exciting to be able to play a game which has character depth and interaction and story in a way that works within social settings."

Muzyka noted that Bioware has wanted to move into MMOs for a very long time, but only recently felt the time was right. "We didn't go into it lightly," he said. "It's the kind of thing that took us years and years - we wanted to do one for ten or fifteen years. Before they were even called MMOs."

The Bioware boss was in the UK to promote the June release of Mass Effect on PC. He explained that the conversion's extensive overhaul was down to the studio's policy of optimising games very carefully for each format.

"Whenever we bring a game to a new platform, we always look at it with reverence and respect. The conversion to PC was something we only thought of doing late in the 360 development," he revealed, although the decision came before Bioware's acquisition by EA last year. "Right now that's it, that's all we've got in development for Mass Effect, just the PC version and the 360," he added, quashing the persistent speculation about a PS3 version.

Muzyka spoke briefly about Bioware's in-development PC fantasy RPG, Dragon Age. "I've just played it recently myself and it's coming along really well," he reassured us.

"It's kind of the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, the fantasy games we've done in the past, and I think our fantasy fans are really going to eat it up, they're going to love it. It's got that rich, detailed universe." He ended by promising more information on it later this year.

Finally, Muzyka discussed the most surprising game on Bioware's development slate at the moment: DS RPG and Sega collaboration, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Sonic is "one of my favourite IPs", he said.

He revealed that the game had its genesis in a conversation with current SEGA US boss and former LucasArts president Simon Jeffery. "We used to work with him when he was at LucasArts. He's a really good partner, and we were saying wouldn't it be great to work together again. I told him I was a big fan of the Sonic universe. It's a good way for us to get on to a platform and do something really cool."

Although I would love a KOTOR mmo, as I am a big fan, Lucas Arts has already stated that they have no plans for introducing a KOTOR mmo because the target audience is too small. While I take this, as always, with a grain of salt, it does make perfect sence from a business perspective.

when did LA say this? do you have any link?

I know this isnt very helpful, however I do belive that Lucas Arts has already released a possible end date for SWG, and I do believe that it was because of a pending title. However I read the article some time ago and cannot remeber it excatly.

If I could build a NEW Star Wars MMORPG....Here is 10 things I would do.

1) I would start by using the very same format as the "old Pre-CU" game (minus the bugs).  A complete "sandbox" game without question is a must.  All 32 professions would be in as well as the same Skill Trees, Races, and Factions. I would also Upgrade the Graphics with "Euphoria" and DX10 quality and style. It would use viberent colors, but the Characters wouldn't be "Cartoony" or WOWish.

2) I would Double the size of the game. I would make sure such planets as Hoth, Dagobah, Coruscant, Kessel,  Kamino, and Geonosis were in the game. I also would have made space more "explorable". I always thought a player should be able to go and discover new and interesting things in the Galaxy.

3) Speaking of Space. I would leave most of JTL as is, however I would put Massive Guild Capital Ships and Space Stations. These new features would support mass space combat as well as enhance social and commercial aspects of game play.  Space Stations could serve as very nice player cities with mini-game casinos and huge markets with NPC vendors.

4) I would have real Guild Fire Bases, not just player cites. Complete with NPC troops and weapon systems. A real defense network where the land you control determins resources.

5) Add a 3rd faction...the Criminal Underworld Faction for Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, and Black Market Merchants. I also would have a REAL WORKING smuggling system that meant something in game. A Real system that was meaningful and important.

6) No cross Faction cooperation. I can't tell you how many time I saw REBS and IMPS grouped. FAIL! The factions must always be fighting on FFA servers.

7) Many sever types for a various play styles. FFA PvP, RP, RP PvP, PvE, RP PvE.

8) Atmospheric Flight!...Tie Bombers and X-Wings used in Close Air-Suppot Ops. Also players could Fly from place to palce on the planet surface.

9) Item Decay is in along with the ability for Crafters alone to make the BEST gear and items.

10) Yes there will be "ALPHA PROFESSIONS"! There would be (2) two such professions. JEDI and BOUNTY HUNTER. Each profession would be rare and most difficult to achieve. In fact each individual player would have a different way to unlock. No two unlocks would be the same. Even if you find the right combo of actions, professions, and items, you would still have to get them all in the right order at the right time. IF a player could manage to unlock, it would take many weeks to complete a full temp toon.  The Alpha Path is not for the casual gamer. So rare in fact, you may never  see someone unlock.

I kinda feel like those starving people who sit around talking about the food they wish they had. We used to do this in the Military all the time. Anyhow, I know all this is a pipe dream, but if i ever hit the $350 million dollar Powerball lottory you can be sure I will be making this game!
