Done all the gaming from gemstone till now and dragon age is by far one of the best rpg's to date hands down. Between this title and "The Witcher" rpg gaming is coming back finally!

Only thing I get from this at this point is if all these invites for closed beta don't come out, I see a big lawsuit coming.

Who we are

The "Lucky" 7th Fleet

--

Origins

The US 7th Fleet was founded on Stardate 1943.3 as the largest forward-deployed US fleet. Its area of operations included the Western Pacific and Indian oceans. Historically, the 7th Fleet participated in several Pacific campaigns during WWII including the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. The 7th remained the front line battle group for US Pacific operations well into the 22nd century.

Now

The 7th Fleet was recommissioned on Stardate 2408.9 by Starfleet and the Federation Council. Its mission is to provide security, relief and assistance to the Federation colonies along the Alpha/Beta quadrant borders of Federation space.

Task Forces

The 7th Fleet is currently composed of three elements, also known as Task Forces. TF-72, TF-79 and TF-80. Each TF performs a different mission role but all loosely support each other.

So true about guilds/clans, the enclave , the first order and the list goes on , with so many past guild/clans that think, "without me there is no clan/guild" and many within just leave to have the founders beg for their return. Add this type of concept to actual gameplay? = nightmare.

Odd that they changed that. Their stance from even before the 360 launched was that silver members could play MMOs. Both Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star allow silver members to play.

yup, and probably the reason for the dispute at this point, but as posted by another, greed kills.

The game isn't even out yet. How about actually playing the game before you decide if you don't like it or not.

My expectations for this game drop almost by the day, based on what we've been told by the devs, and they usually give us rose colored appraisals of their game.  Sounds like CO in space and probably will be as equally incomplete when it launches.  Crafting/economy, social aspects, and other old school MMO features sound like afterthoughts, if they are included at all.  The game will be heavily instanced with small player per zone caps, which I hate.  It sounds like the game will be a series of generic randomly generated instanced 5 person/NPC missions.  Even if it's fun, I can't see this game having any staying power.

I'll probably still give it a shot unless there is mass beta tester bashing of the game, because I want it to be good...I just don't have much faith right now.

I have to agree with darth as well in his thoughts, my previous post really aims at the OP's comments, but Darth's reasonings are along mine. In time the question becomes longetivity. We really have no clue how this will be till we get our hands on it. In that regard I sit in the same seat and am on a wait and see stance as far as that is concerned. Beyond the horrible day one patch the other issue with CO is content, way way below most single player game content if you ask me. At least prior to patch day, the game was fun and we did fly threw content at the start. However after 25 it wasn't all to bad, it started slowing down, still very playable and fun, but in the end you could (the average player) determin that you will run out of content within the next week or two.

Cryptic side stepped this topic and half way admitted they know their content is lacking and are trying to fix that, but in the end that along with the patch killed it for me. Will STO follow suite? Hard to say, the dev team is supposably bigger (we really don't know) and the team is a different team and now many from CO are pulled to STO to finish it up. So who really knows other then cryptic themselves.  The differance however between STO and CO is many however so even thou the base engine for the game is the same as CO's, the concept, IP, design, etc is totally different. It will be really hard to judge such a thing till we get to see it. But again I am with Darth on this, it's a wait and see at this point, I like what I see , but in the end I did with CO in beta as well. Only time will tell.

*Appologies to you OP for my wall of text :)

Well thought out and described, however it has been talked about in the past if you missed it. As a developer and gamer (not a developer of games) but the basic understandings of coding etc. The idea of starting out the way you design has one big flaw I see and many have and still to this day argue that is what MMO's are about. Grouping,  grouping is a great part of MMO's and have been sence the start of them. UO, EQ, etc had grouping, but it was never forced. You could group if you wanted to beat a certain mob grouping, boss etc, but in the end you could solo if you so choose.

Games that limit it's player base to a focused way will automatically cut some people out of the game play. Many vocal people on these forums and others say that grouping is the only way and no MMO should have solo content. While many continue to argue this point, I personally just go by experiance, the latest being champions online. Beta in that game was fun exciting and you bet, solo. Once launched on the first day a patch was released, making basicly impossible for those that like to play a build they loved to play the game. Others (those that say it was way to easy) had a life of easy play, they tuned their characters by what was the best ability for the senario or sistuation. This in turn made the game seem way to easy and just dull. Those limited few (I can say that by the actual numbers seen on the server clusters now) made the argument and pleaded for Cryptic to change it, to make it harder etc.. Once done, the game is dead.. not completly dead but so bad off that there is even a free all out join in weekend and the game is basicly still brand new.

I use the above as an excample when you attempt to force a player base into something and give them no options. As a captain, I can do what I want in the game. I can group or not, I can follow a certain path or go another. You argue that there is only combat in the game, well it is definitly something that is only seen, sadly the other way "Diplomacy and non-combat way" doesn't make for good film. So in this , we really never see it in beta footage or promotional material. However, we do know it is there and there is actually allot of non-combat in the game. But combat is present as everyone is in war or on the brink of war.

While I understand ship interiors and feel more of a crew , I have to concure with cryptic in this regard, how boring it would be as a medical person to sit in sick bay waiting for the captain to cause casualities etc. In the end, to many other minor post would just be anoying and boring in the long run. Not to mention all the resources you would need to dedicate to each profession that it would take to actual give each class something unique and "fun" to do.

I get it I really do and I was one just as yourself that thought that way, but more and more when I actually sat outside the box and really looked at what it would take then how could a particular job be fun to play, I just couldn't see it. Because in the end, Star Trek Universe jobs ( certain ones) are mendain and boring just like real life and we all play these games to get away from that and have fun. Sure their may be 10-20 people out of every 1000 that would love to do that and actually have fun doing so. Profitable in that regard? Not really, not to a company trying to make money at it, and then not to mention "LF MEDIC!" because only a handfull will play them because everyone wants to be a gunner.

I get it, I understand it, but it really is just no possible with current tech I think. Ship interiors will come that was promised, but then again a promise isn't a garrenty, but we can hope. For now what there is, is probably the best star trek game out to date. As in the past we have yet to have one that actually was great. Sure, we had some that where descent but the history of star trek games have always been dismal. I think in the end it will take an MMO to make it what people really want out of star trek. To be part of the great exploration that star trek is all about.

chaintm

ya praxis, forgot about that, same here, wanting to visit all the locations etc.. also wanting to help make the game better IE find the bugs so when it does launch, all they need to do is add more and more content! :)

Has anyone heard or read any hints about when beta will start? Being this game is currently set for the start of next year, I would think so , sence all the hype about signing up for beta. What will be the first thing you will want to do or look forward too? Me to be honest, my first AWWW will be walking around a starbase or starfleet, I can't wait for ship combat, but I really look forward to walking around known locations, hope they have details like windows that actually show space and things moving about even thou it might not be what's really there, IE animated ships flying by, docking etc.

Would love one to be honest, there is one over on the offical forums but so many made "fleets' as soon as the forums where open there now it's just flooded with allot of fleets on hold (reitrement) and the like. It would be great to have some active ones recruite here, im looking myself for a more adult group in the SF side.

To finalize my point, I call people to look up (if they haven't played it) one game that attempted the cross platform on the same server having pc and console players play to gather. Not only did the console people get dominated, the game failed due to such an unbalanced game due to controls. (Sure the game itself wasn't all the great ) but in the end it was the pc player that just dominated the console player due to controls. This is a prime example of how a game can and is basically dumbed down for console play. Look up the game called "shadowrun".

Nuff said.

To be blunt your point is garbage, *mod edit*

FFXI cross platforms on same server

Nuff Said

Actually no its not I want to rub it in a little more. There is no advantage to playing ffxi on PC other than a small graphics tweak. I claimed highly camped HNM's serveral times on Ps2. Controls are not dumbed down for console, its just slightly different from the norm.

Horrible excample, FFXI has no challenge about it in terms of gameplay, the grind of mobs hack and slash (suprise just as shadowrun was) is no excample of a general MMO. There are exceptions on both sides , so alas your excample doesn't dispute anything about control issues in console vs pc, you can't win the argument, it's like saying the sky is blue when it actually isn't, only the sea makes it seem blue, but then again if you want to "simplify it" you can say it's blue.

Well the issue I had with SOE is Swg, while I continued to play that game after the major changes, what killed it to me was the card addition. When they added the card game they added items you could get "only threw buying cards" that in a game like swg that has been made into a collector game it is a cash hog. Any good items worth anything (cool looking) or even (Usable) like speed bikes etc are bought threw card decks which don't even garrenty you a certain item. Its all chance and I am sure those % a manipulated to get more people to buy more cards.

In that excample only do I have issue with such an idea, while profitible to them obviously, I refuse to pay into it but people do, swg is a prime excample of it. If they do that here I probably won't mind thou, because in the end, STO really doesn't have a collector feel to it or even a world that has such. Unless ofcourse they added a cash mall for say "being able to have a certain holodeck theme" then ya, I might be a bit upset. But in the end sto is not what swg is atm and that is A: not even out and B: not a collector game.

It's a hard call for me atm, I can see myself playing this game for a long time to come and maybe even buying some odd thing in the future, but if it becomes something like swg did in it's collecting game I just won't participate as I didn't there. Eh its the wave of the future in MMO's as so many have stated here and in the end , you have a choice, don't buy it or do.

I think the argument of why people say that when you design a game based on console there is a simple fact of interface controls which usually means limiting the use of a game. Consoles of course are played with basically a joystick which now a-days is known as a game pad. Usually 12 buttons and two different toggle controllers. While with a pc you basically have unlimited control with fast mouse clicking and all the keys of a keyboard available to you and of course the combo's there in.

When designing for a console, I am sure everyone will agree the GUI or interface has to be controller friendly, it has been proven over and over again that the mouse and keyboard combo are just faster in the way they are used and response times. So to make a game "Playable" "easier" IE "dumb down" a game for a console must conform to the basic controllers that it uses. Which in the end is again what was stated above. Not to mention the argument with pc's upgrading more quickly then a console ever will in hardware.

While some console games can be said to be very complicated in depth, the question of design is actually different. Take a game like swg as so many like to reference too. Even thou they re-did the combat in that game , it doesn't change the fact that the game is so deep that attempting to play it on a console at this point would be a daunting task. Namely working with the crafting system, moving items within your house , interacting with the community at the same time attempting to control your character. This is a perfect example of how a game complexity has to be simplified to fit the console genre.

In this we look at a game like STO and say "geez, this means abc only no abcdefghijk... " and so on. IE simplifying the game and or dumbing it down for console play. In the end it "does" in fact effect the way a game is designed. CO being the prime example of this, has basically a power set limit and controls to make it easier for a console player to manipulate. Because the design from the outset was designed around said concept of console, this limits it's abilities to go beyond the basic say 12 button system.

(ps. Even with all this in mind I still will play it, I am just a die hard st fan so they could sell me a piece of paper with a drawn ship on it and i probably would get it, ya, that's sad i know hehe)

Well far from my intent of this thread was I looking to say "ISN"T THIS A WOW KILLER!?" more my intent with that comment was, I am amazed again at the sheer size of the community that has grown from the title, IP and maker. As everyone knows trying to sign up for beta was crazy and the community on the offical forums is huge! Which is a great thing. I was again just pointing out it's just amazing how many really are looking forward to this game and is it even possible to hit the number WoW hits?

Maybe saying WoW killer or hinting to such wasn't a good idea,(but so use to hearing it) my thought was really will the numbers be there, I would say yes if bioware keeps to their great game making and this turns out to be awsome :)

Well to semi defend the post about the logic of being scared at what depth MMO's are allowing to become because of CO is a good worry. Again as a lifetime sub to the game, I have come across a few things that "scare" me about the success of STO, there is a big BUT in there thou, I will get to that.

The problem lays within a few things about CO, first off the game launched was not the game we got 1 day later. The patch changed everything from what it was to what it is now. The mass exidous from the game is well known, cryptic employees can go off about "how we can't see the numbers only they can" bla bla bla, but as a player I see with my "Eyes" what I see. I logged in the last two days to see people but not the people I seen at launch day, I am not talking beta I am talking day 1 where we had actual paying members.

These forums and your own offical one are full of people leaving in mass, you don't want to admit that that is fine, but if anyone (I can pacificly know one name , but won't go into harrasment here or trolling) that if he/she gets their hands on any part of STO , STO will undoublty take the same fall. THAT is the true essence of many that beleive that STO can be introuble even before it launches.

The big BUT however is, for those that actually follow the game, we know it has been stated that their are two seperate teams runing the different games which is good. BUT any company has it's employees in most respects able to interact of put their "two cents in" encluding when they are in a spot of managment. This is the conern, this is the worry, CO was a great game , but made hard by the "numbers" and not the content because the hardcore gamers where leveing to quickly.

Personally I LOVED the original CO in beta and day 1 launch, my login in along with others would show this. As soon as that patch took effect I barly log in, I have latly to "test " test the latest and greatest but the game is now "grind fest 101". No thanx.

This in the end is what people worry about among other things, such as how the same engine is used in both games, the same teams are basicly next to each other (in theory) . The point to it all is , usually what happens to one happens to the other and sadly your company will have to prove this otherwise.

While CO and STO are totally two different games, there are many things that make the allot closer and having the same company also being involved makes that even more so. I believe allot of what you and the devs have stated in the past in how this game is different and the teams are different, but it will take time to prove that wrong. No matter what you say here, there will be those that doubt it, because in the end we in the general MMO community have been burned allot and now we are more cautious then ever in beleiving in any MMO games atm.

I beleive STO will be awsome, but I can't say I don't have my doubts because of what happened and still is happening in CO, but then again I beleive what you say and I beleive what the devs say, only time will tell if this remains so.

*sad panda face*

I don't and refuse to get blueray anything, once they stop making dvd's I will just keep buying on ITUNES, Im a sad panda that I will miss out on this, but I won't pay the way overpriced model for blueray discs. This coming from a guy who has again the life time to CO 200 bucks, just to get the stuff for STO. ya, kind of an oximoron but alas, I won't support the blue ray effort for my own reasons. However from my understanding same thing for dvd? So woot to that! I hope at least, but usually only blueray get's the special deals to get people to buy into it which again I refuse.

lol not only did I buy CO lifetime sub for the stuff I get for STO, but I pre-ordered a collectors edition without even knowing what it will have,. how pathetic am I as a total die hard ST fan? lol I know, but man I really can't wait to play :)

Wow that would be awsome :) I am a huge starfleet fan, but funny thing is , when roms are avalible to play in any game I always end up playing them go fig :)... that would make life so much more interesting, I would have the best of both worlds and so much more to do ! I would love to be able to play the roms as well ;)

Reading the comments above I agree and disagree, but you know that's why it's great to have this community. We can say just about anything along as it follows the rules, which pretty much means be nice to each other and be civil. So in this we can actually say "we hate this game!" or "we don't like this aspect" and not get hushed up. Be it as it may, I am happy that everyone is here on under the "right" pretences. Now don't get scared away when the hardcore posters question your game's design ideas or what they consider flaws. Stick up for what you beleive in and tell them the way it is, some will undoubtly attempt to troll but the mods here (as you can see in this thread) are pretty much on top of things.

I hope to see some actual live debates and Q&A's come out of this move to get the word out, it definitly wouldn't hurt the title to do just that, so again as posted in the other thread I do welcome everyone and look forward to playing the game. Let the discussions begin!
