Not sure how you're paying for the subscription, but my KTera subscription only cost $9.99 and that included the broker fee. |

I like how everyone is arguing whether GW2 or Tera will be better.
Newsflash.
Almost every single p2p western mmo that has been released on american shores has flopped HARD within two months of release. FFXI lasted a little bit longer, probably because it was one of the first foreign games a lot of gamers played that was p2p. Aion, FfXIV, and the other multitudes of p2p and f2p games out there usually crash and burn once people get to the endgame and realize that it's not what they thought it would be.
Everyone thinks every game is going to be their salvation from the blockbuster MMOs that came before it but guess what, they won't be. The days of blockbuster MMOs are over for now, the best anyone can do is sell a ton of preorders, offer you some beta access and flashy graphics if you do, then when you finally do realize that that game is about as substantial as a paper airplane, you've already payed them, and possibly even subbed for another month already.
Neither Tera, GW2, nor even the european based Secret World, will give you the same feeling as the first few MMOs you played. Think of it like sex, the first time will always be the most memorable, whether good or bad, you will always compare every time afterwards to that time.
Wake up, buy your games, play for a month, and move onto the next one, knowing that none of em are gonna last long. The next one is probably going to be just as bad as the last, but there will be another new one coming soon, and another after that.
Viva consumerism. Hit of 2012? Please. Hit of April maybe. |

Jesus all I hear is a bunch of crying for a game that's a lost cause anyway.
Be glad they are doing something that -might- get a few players back into this unpopulated wasteland of a game. You just might have some people to play with for at least a month. Don't worry though, most of us are smart enough to know the new patch is just a bunch of smoke being puffed up our asses anyway, and won't bite the bait. |

For those of you concerned about people saying they've gotten in, but preordered ahead of you, don't worry. Rockjaw and SWTOR both on twitter have said that they are going by the times that the preorders were put in on the site, and have said that anyone who has gotten in before they should have to show proof, but none have. They've said that the database shows that no one has gotten in ahead of the line, and I'm sure that the cases of people getting in ahead are much rarer than what the people on these forums would like you to believe.
While I'm kinda ticked I didn't know about this wave crap beforehand, since I took a day off work to play the first day, I can understand their reasons for it. Case point being the ridiculous amount of servers that Blizzard has, and how many of those servers are DEAD. This way, they can max out the populations on servers as they introduce more people, and introduce more servers as they need to, instead of having 50 servers up and 1/3 of the people going to one server instead of spreading out. We'll all get in by the 15th, or so they say, so hold onto your pants and prepare for disappointment tomorrow if you like. If you get in, then its a bonus, if not, nothing lost. |

Ive now played 190 hours in Skyrim but...
General Gaming « General Discussion 12/03/11 7:02:35 PM
I've put in 52 hours on my dual wielder orc, who's level 48, and beat the game without fooling around with too much side quest stuff, didn't do any of the thieves guild/college/dark brotherhood/etc quests, and only got about 3/4 of the way through the Companions because of a bug. Also didn't do anything with joining the imperials or the stormcloaks. I did go through the main questline and beat that part though.
Started another character, an archer, and I'm level 43 on that character, with 83 hours played, and I've done damn near every quest in the game that I could find, with the exception of the Hrothgar line, which I left at the part where they summon me from the very beginning, and the College questline. Joined the Imperials and killed a lot of Stormcloaks for funzies. I'de say I've probably done 50-60% of the quests in the game.
There is definitely plenty to keep you playing, if you actually try to look for it, and mods will keep you playing after the initial luster has worn off. Still playing my archer, but trying to think of a new idea for a character, my unarmed heavy armor khajit didn't turn out so well. |

Let me start by saying I actually played FFXIV on release, and from everything I'm reading, nothing has changed really.
This is my character, Cheshire Cat, on Gysahl. I quit after a little less than a month of playing, and the last two weeks was spent mainly working on crafting. I am a HUGE fan of the FF series, and the games visual effects are amazing if you have a computer that can handle the output. I ran everything on high, and I have a superclocked GTX 460, and it sometimes made my computer get so hot it would heat my room up to crazy levels. That turned a lot of people off to the game, not being able to experience everything it had to offer with low spec computers. Another thing is it is NOT a solo friendly game. You almost have to go into the game with a group of friends to get much out of it, because the chat system doesn't promote idle chatter, or really much in the way of any kind of chatter at all. The leveling can be downright tedious unless you do it the right way, but they don't tell you the right way, and its very difficult to stumble on unless you are playing with a group of people regularly.
My guild was able to figure out how to get the most out of the leveling system fairly quickly, and we wound up getting over 20 in a few days, but they thought people were leveling too fast, and shut down the XP gain to miniscule amounts to try and hold people back. We found a way around that and got over 30 the next week, but by then most of the rest of the population of the game was getting tired of getting stuck at ~16-18. There was a mass exodus from the game and one by one the guild started dying, so we all just called it quits. Honestly, if you want to see a graphically amazing game that will leave you gaping in awe at the cinematics, the level of detail in the field and in town, AND you have a comp that can handle it, try this game at least. I can promise you that it will be shortlived, that you will probably come to hate the game within days, but there really is a lot of amazing things to see in the game. I was able to see all of it as far as you could go back then, and I'm glad I at least saw it and experienced it once. Its an amazing ride the first time through if you can handle the grind, but one ride is enough, theres no need to ride more than once, or stay on the ride. |

Went from 1-22 on a char in around 12 hours, wound up with a ridiculous number of quests left over, had to start wiping out quests to make room for more. Once I hit 20 I just said screw it, wiped my whole quest log, and went to the next area. |

The game isn't over, it'll go down like almost every other mmo in the past 6 years... starts out with a large following and dwindles to nothing in the space of 1-3 months. They may actually keep subs longer by listening to WoW fanbois because guess what.... there are a lot more of them than there are of you, and in the end its about what will bring in the most money.
I won't even begin to guess what the subs will look like a month or so after release, but I know there is a lot of hype about this game, like all other new shiny mmos. They come, they go, on to the next one. Some just sell more boxes than others. Imo, smart move on their part appealing to the wow fanbois who are getting bored of their Cataclysm now that its 6 months down the road. It may actually earn them some money for a few months.
I for one played the beta for one day and uninstalled, hated the energy/combo point system, but my roommates are die hard fans. (One of which hasn't played wow in over a year, the other recently quit.) I say why remake a game to be like WoW when you can just go play the original.
If they can make the changes you are saying they are, and adapt it into their own style, then they will keep fans around for some time. Like it or not, WoW catered to its fans for many years, and thats the reason its the juggernaut it is, and why so many people compare other games to it. Make a game that uses WoW's UI conveniences, that has updated graphics, with a new spin on combat mechanics, an exciting storyline, and an evolving endgame that keeps people playing after hitting level cap, and you'll make money.
The farther away from "the norm" that you try to make a game, making it original, the more risk you take in fencing out players who aren't looking for that kind of thing, but the more of a chance you have of the game succeeding in the long run if your ideas are taken well by the community. On the other hand, the closer to "the norm" that you make a game, players will be able to relate easier, and will want to pick up the game at least once to try it out. However, you will lose those subs in a month or two due it being a "WoW clone" in their eyes.
Finding a happy medium between player convenience (what they are used to), originality, and the ability to keep someone's attention focused on your game after the initial glamour has worn off is something gaming companies have been trying to do for years, and no one has succeeded. I don't blame them for taking ideas from one of the most successful MMO's in recent times and using it to their advantage. It would be stupid not to, but it would be stupid to take too much. |
