General: The List: Five Recent MMO Blunders
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/04/09 5:28:56 PM
Five bucks says the lead in pict with the guys hand over the woman’s mouth will be pulled within two hours.
Honestly the biggest blunder of all is game developers inviting fly by night journalist that write for second rate fan sites to press conferences. They are more than likely going to purposely misquote you to gain street cred and a reputation for edginess. I understand that developers want to connect with the community…but the community by and large idea of fun is burning a developer who isn’t Blizzard to the ground.
The second biggest blunder is hyping or even mentioning you are developing a game too soon. A smart developer would not even announce a game until the game is feature complete and in closed testing by a group of professional quality specialist, that specialize in online games.

Aion: Tower of Eternity: Associate Producer Interview

Simple, many times the dislike is motivated by fear of losing ones guild members from another MMO, or it's a case of Guerilla marketing from the competition. We have seen MMO suffer smear campaigns before, with forum members monitoring forums 24/7on this site to ridicule contradict or otherwise shoot down any positive remarks or press. I for one am having a blast in Aion, it is going to be really tough for me to pick between Aion and Champions online as I only have time for one MMO. Aion is fun, and it's a breath of fresh air but it isn't for everyone...that doesn’t make it a failboat. |

MMO's have evolved, smaller groups (Five or less..think old school D&D group) shorter Epic encounter times (an hour to an hour and a half tops) easy in easy out.. Entertain me I have a job already mother fucker. The developers who don’t get this are doomed for failure, the ones that see the writing on the wall may be able to catch enough scraps from Blizzard to survive. |

I get the chance to speak to many of them in game and there is a recurring trend of SWG seeing an influx of WoW burnouts looking for a more engaging game world to play in, and SWG delivers that. There is also plenty of sandbox gameplay in SWG, a number of my friends have put together awesome creations via the story teller system and run fun events.
Yep one of my very good friends works for SOE...she told me that SWG is every bit as profitable as their other games more so in some cases and all of their games are currently turning a profit....I undertsntd that the Vets will howl and deny this, she has no reason to lie. SOE is laughing at the "Vets" all the way to the bank. The only thing these screwballs have managed to do is get a negitive reputation in the MMO community, so much so that Bioware dosen't wnat them on thei forums and will perma ban them the moment they start their shit. One mabye they will get the therapy or closure the need. |

General: Massey: The Myth of Role-Playing Servers
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/09/09 5:15:58 PM
Wow Dana...of all the years I have been coming to this site this is the first time I have ever seen a venom laced rant from you. Guy I have been part of Role-playing guilds since UO, and those who use Elizabethan English (even in DAoC) are usually universally laughed at. ERP guilds are mostly often viewed with disdain by the normal folks who RP. We like gear, we like fun and we bitch about nerfs just like everyone else...we just don't want to name our Character madeyourmommoan, or Azzzwhippa, nor do we want to hang out with those who do. |

General: New Columnist Garrett Fuller: Heroism
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/09/09 3:40:45 PM
I think that MMO developers are slowly learning that entering a instance with 24 other people you barley know and can hardly stand to be around is the furthest thing from feeling heroic. Smaller more tight knit groups akin to the days of Pen and Paper D&D are more likely to give that heroic feeling than having some 14 year old sociopath shout orders at you over vent. I hear it all the time from groups in WoW Man uthgarde pinnacle was a blast......but Ulduar was stab your eyes out stupid not because of the content it was dealing with all the attitudes. And Blizzard developers are hearing this too, last Blizzcon Metzen said 85% of the players were doing less than 55% of the content. They are doing less because every member you add to the group the asshat chance increases by 20%. This is why I doubt very highly that we will see more 25 man Raids in the next WoW expansion, it will be five and ten man with heroic versions of each. SOE is even saying this is too much, DCUO will have Heroic missions for Two to Five players that scales depending on group size. The message that we are seeing is the EQ raid structure and the archaic Guild system is dead, peopel don't have time for complex scocial networks in their real lives much less their virtual ones unless they have no life at all. It will be interesting to revisit this in two years. |

General: Massey: Accessible Subscription MMOs?
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/03/09 1:40:17 PM
F2p games are doing better for one simple reason...they are making better quality f2p games than most of the subscription based shit that is offered these days. Take a look at Perfect World..it is insanely fun, looks good on even a e-machine and has an awesome community that is very remincent of FFXI community. I buy a 10.00 card every couple of months and I am swiming in gear and loot....why should I spend 15 a month for broken ugly non fun crap. or even a fun game that openly harbors a cesspool community? Sorry no one but no one gets my money these days unles they work their asses off for it and PW does that.....and more and more gamers are starting to feel the way I do, that is why F2p games are on the rise. |

Reading through this thread I have to ask myself are hardcore PVP players their own worst enemy? I mean this guy shows up with four of his buddies on the beta boards starts calling Aion "his game" and then starts making demands on Liv and Brian until they ban him. All he has accomplished is looking like a idiot and convincing developers that his is the wrong demographic to cater too. |

Originally posted by Laughing-man No if it is the same Jotull I'm thinking about; him and a couple others spent a good bit of time on the Aion beta boards telling everyone Aion was forced PVP that the producers were lying to us to get us to buy and talking about "how sweet it would be to gank all the WoW noobs before they QQ quit" Well Liv banned their sorry asses and announced that there would be no Forced PVP in Aion, Brian popped on a bit later and confirmed it.....and since then he has been going around preaching how NCsoft betrayed the PVPer. In short this tard is nuts. |

Dude....the vast majority of people do not want forced PVP I mean who wants to be collecting mats for crafting only to be waylaid by six sociopaths ten levels higher than you? They did not take away you PVP you still have the Abyss...NCsoft did a smart thing when they decide no forced PVP, and they did not bait and switch you Brian Knox gave folks plenty of heads up about it. |

Well lets see..that is one who votes fail and how many telling you how dumb you are? God PVPers talk about how big wussies PVE players are but I swear I have never heard a group cry more than they do. Carebear carebears Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Grow a pair man its just a game. |
|
|
You know guy....I can spend a week telling you how retarded you post is. NCsoft is designing a game that will appeal to the broadest group possible, and that group doesn’t want Gank on sight PVP. They had to tone PVP down or they would not have had a marketable product, I think folks like you are just pissed because you were spamming all the major forums that Aion was going to be Forced PVP and NCsoft made you look like idiots. Aion didn't fail it is in fact a massive success. |
