but are those old games still populated? i never played FFXI or Lineage 2 but they sure been through a lot which makes me wonder if it's a good time to start playing them now. same deal with Vanguard -- i really like the game but it feels under-populated and it kinda ruins the whole grouping experience. i'd actually go back to Anarchy Online if it didn't feel so empty
really wish there was a more current game with this kind of gameplay.. one that isn't free2play and has enough people in it.

i was actually thinking about FFXIV since it does appear to be heavily group-oriented. but so far i'm only hearing bad things about it.

few years ago i used to play anarchy online and i really miss grouping with people just to kill stuff for XP. can anyone recommend any *current* games that have something like that? |

Originally posted by Takiton hm, that's a pretty silly post. these guys are offering the client for free and you're being all sarcastic about it like they owe you more? honestly, how many games, indie or not, offer their client for free? and how many games have a subscription price of 10$ per month? and you know what, these guys actually deserve the money.
sure, you can't play the game with just the free client, but if you do want to play it you don't have to pay extra 20$-50$ to buy the client, just the sub price. |

have you tried Fallen Earth? it has a sandbox feel to it in the sense that you don't choose a profession/class out-of-the-box; you basically start like everybody else and as you level up and gain APs which you allocate in whatever skills you like. later on you can join a faction that suit your ideology or/and playstyle. 1. when you create your avatar you are very limited with customizing it (face and body kinda looks the same, but you still have a lot of customization options like piercings, tattoos, face paints, etc), eventually you encounter LOTS of varied gear that makes your avatar really unique. there are a lot of armor slots unlike most MMOs. for example, while most MMOs have 1 slot for gloves and 1 slot for shoulders, in fallen earth you have 2 slots for each enabling you the ability to mix shoulders/gloves for a different look and stats. there are also leg-pads and hand-pads, jackets and t-shirts which both have different armor slots. you can also wear glasses/goggles, masks and hats. i currently have a surgical mask and a monocle and it looks great, although i can't wait to get my hands on some nerdy goggles! 2. the game is pretty recent. it came out about 6 months ago. the company is also very supportive. 3. both PvE and PvP are available, although PvP only shines later on in the game. this game is more about PvE from what i read. 4. the community is one of fallen earth's strongest parts. first of all there is only 1 server and people are extremely helpful. mind you that the game world is huge and entirely open so you might not encounter many people out in the wasteland, but in towns and quest hubs you're bound to meet people.
you shuold give the game a try. it does have some cons like a combat system that not many people like, clunky controls and animations (although you get used to it) and some other things that some people approve and some don't. you can get the trial here: https://www.fallenearth.com/trial |

cheers for the replies, been very helpful (: I play every day and I plan to play as a ToS, so I guess it's safe to assume it'll take me less than a month (it took me 3 weeks to get to 80 in WoW, so I'm aiming for less than that!). I rather get to 80 fast with 1 character and then level alts when I get bored with endgame. thanks~

i'm wondering how long it takes for one to get to level 80. anyone here mind giving me a rough estimate based on personal experience? would also like to know what class you played. thanks!

the website you get directed to offers a different product called "gameguard personal", which is some sort of security software. anyway, it's not what you're looking for.
here's what you need to do: run the spellborn launcher and click "check files", it'll run a check which will replace any missing or courrpted files. after the check is done, try launching the game from the launcher. if you still get the same error as before, try to re-install the game (uninstall>install). if you still get the same issue, i recommend to redownload the client.
(BTW, gameguard doesn't work on windows 7 beta yet, so if you're using that you need to wait for a patch. ) |

linkrealms....finally something decent for the sandbox crowd

i really hate asking for invites but this game looks very interesting and unusual, so if anyone has a spare invite i'd really appreciate getting one!

i've read that the new version of gameguard does support windows 7, but TCOS uses an older version so it doesn't. until they update the gameguard version, playing on windows 7 isn't possible. |

oh, i see. well, subscribing won't solve your issue. you may want to check with the official forum for an answer (phpbb.acclaim.com/spellborn/viewforum.php). i managed to activate mine yesterday, and it changed from "pending" to "active", so it's definitely not a subscription issue. open beta seems to have limited slots per day, so i'm guessing you tried to activate your account when the slots reached the limit. if you don't find/get an answer from the official forum, i'd wait to tomorrow to try and activate again. good luck! |

according to this spellborn.acclaim.com/keypurchase.html, subscribing via coins is basically the only way to go. there's no other method of buying game time as it seems (well, there are few payment methods *to buy coins*, but getting coins is a must). annoyingly, there's no way of getting exactly 1500 coins (the amount required for 30 days of game-time) in one bulk. you have to buy a higher amount of coins, which costs more than the usual 15$ per month of most MMOs, but this leaves you with spare coins like the guy above me said. the acclaim membership subscription *can be* nice, but it costs money and it just gives you a discount. quite useless IMO unless you plan on playing for a long time. CHEAPEST way of buying coins is using the phone/cellphone method. it costs 5$ per 500 coins, which means you can do it 3 times for 1500 coins, and it should cost you 15$. confusing, i know. but i hope i managed to clarfiy it a bit. |

as far as i know, the european version of the game already launched, so you probably played that one (www.tcos.com/). from what i've read, there was a lot of IP blocking involved so people who weren't from europe couldn't play, so the population was rather low. this open beta is basically the north american version, which is maintained by Acclaim (spellborn.acclaim.com/).
