I remember a supplement for the PnP game called Delta Green where you were part of an agency that fought against the Mythos, never played it but very good reading.


 

Well there could be ways to solve that. There are tons of rules for psychic derangments or physical traumas. Each death could stack up and at some point lead to a mental derangment (schyzophrenia, multiple-personalities, phobias..) that would have a permanent effects on the character, but could symptoms could be avoided by drug use or whatever,.. :>

Seriously, the whole point of Lovecraft's universe was that most people didn't know and were not exposed to the "truth." Can you imagine running into large groups of respawning deep ones or Mi-Go and killing them for XP? That would completely trivialize the experience of encountering "cosmic horrors" and therefore kill the very thing that makes Lovecraft's work so unique.


 

You know, there are different ways to make a MMORPG other than having mobs all around that needs to be killed for some stupid quests ;p

This could actually work really well if they implement it the way DDo was made. Small groups of players going into instanced places to search for clues, mythos, trying to avoid combat as much as possible (hava a fixed static XP for the whole quest, and no XP from killing) and one large town (arkham). Indeed there wouldn't be any PvP. A game like this if handled correctly would be fantastic.

There are some rumours going on around about Turbine's new MMORPG is going to be Call of Cthulhu MMORPG fp2 with microtransactions. Anyone has any further information about this or it's just completely made up?

Elvis and The Beatles were not the first ones either, but they were the first to put out the millions. They were the Kings in their genre (despite of Bill Haley and dozens of others).

You are speaking of the king of MMORPG's. I say that Zork started it all.

And LotrO is indeed a boring lifeless copy cat of that King because it was published 3 years later without any added value.

WoW just brought 40 mil$ into marketing before release which was more than the whole Lotro development. That's why Lotro initially sold maybe 400 copies and WoW like 2 milion (during first 3 months). Even AoC, WAR spent much more on marketing and ad than Lotro -> therefore their sales numbers went up to 1 mil cca.

That's the power of marketing and adv, if you dont believe in it, you're dumb no offense. Not every company has so much money to spend on adv like Blizzard. Turbine is much smaller company.


 

The King of MMORPG is Wow - like it or not. Because of the sheer PAYED subscription number. Just like Elvis or the Beatles were the first to hit the millions in rock and roll and British pop music.

LotrO came out 3 years AFTER the King was launched and brought NOTHING new.

Where are the flying mounts in LotrO,

Where are the underwater worlds?

Where are the Siege battles, where are the Catapults and destructable Keeps.

Where is the constant phasing and changing worlds depending on the quest you do in Lotro.

NADA. Nothing nowhere to be found. Not even fishing was in it before this year.

600 people on a world wide website that voted with alt accounts just made mmorpg.com looks like a fool these days.

 

 

Heh mate, again no offense. But you're fanatically insane :) Just as you named these things, I could name you 10 other things Lotro has and WoW doesn't. Which actually proves these games are not that similiar.

If you say it's a king of MMO, then I wonder why are other wow fanboys so pissed when WoW is being called McDonald or Britney (King of fast foods, king of popmusic,...) If the term king is only referred to.. how many people are subscribed to it, then indeed you can't avoid being compared to everything else in the world which is being the most popular in its genre.

Exactly its not Aventurines fault the mainstream gamming press are not covering Darkfall, we should all really be criticizing the corrupt and unreliable gaming magazines and websites who are obviously refusing to give Darkfall the fair and honest coverage it deserves.

Aventurine have given people every opportunity to see Darkfall for themselves, they even invite anyone interested to visit their offices when ever they can spare the time, and give beta access to journalists and websites.

I agree, what the mainstream gamming press should really be doing at the moment, is covering all the allready available information about the amazing and revolutionary features that have been demonstrated by Darkfall, that will help save Aventurine even more time to work on the game.

Darkfall is the most highly anticipated MMO at the moment, its scandalous that it is not getting the media attention it deserves despite Aventurines best efforts to be as open and honest about their game as possible.


 

Its simple and directly related to the amount of money a company spends on advertisment. I believe they didnt get as much from EU fonds nor government for that purpose. If Tasos said in one of the interviews that they spent 20$ mil on the development (which is a joke sum in compare to major releases) you can't be surprised it doesn't have enough attention.

Noone was paying attention to EVE online before release either, and still it growed. Darkfall can go the same way if its good (just the progress of customers will rise up faster than before due to larger consumer;s base).

Plus I have no idea where did you get from that idea that the adv on mmorpg.com is free? Can you explain how did you mean that?

You should use it then too.

It costs a lot of money to get a space in every major gaming magazine and website around the world. It costs money to put on banners on websites, get on touch with a good distribution company etc. This game costed less than the marketing/adv budget of games like WAR, AoC, or WoW. Officially announced was 20$ mil for the development cost of Darkfall which is definetly less than 40$mil adv/marketing cost of WoW.

THIS is not WAR nor AoC nor WoW with hundreds of milions of budget and I'm dead sure marketing and adv of these games costed more than the whole Darkfall development.

Marketplace yes, that contains quests for levels 3 to 5. But each level in DDo is divided into 4 sub-levels and at each level and sublevel you get customization options. You probably refer to these sub levels then :p

Are you sure you played it at launch? The game was capped at level 10 at the time of the release and a few months afterwards.

Anyway, I still think DDo is the best PvE game out there. The dungeons are as close to the original pen and paper atmosphere and it's one of the few games out there that is quite unique and still getting frequent and regular updates.

Even in old angmar (pre-revamped one) you didnt need to fight every mob out there. I always just ran through without any real issues. Yes there is a short train of mobs, but the mob follow distance is pretty short in Lotro. And tell me, what did you expect from Moria? Moria is supposed to be one of the most dangerous places in ME. You want it to be a walk in the park? There are some empty long halls and corridors, but also there are places full of orcs and goblins that slow you down and dismount you on one hit.

These places are not supposed to amuse you, they are there to improve the atmosphere of the place, if you want a walk in the park in every zone then I guess you have to look elsewhere. There will be always some zones in Lotro where you won't pass as easily as you want.

If anyone says that crafting in Moria is good for you money, he automatically loses all credibility. They are going to actually give improve crafted items soon, because atm they are mostly crap.

Creatures and Intelligent enemies  would roam or congregate in places, even fight each other. 

You can't simulate a dangerous environment in a game like Lotro any other way. If you keep roads safe and make points of interests full of mobs, it will be a theme park like Shire. Is this the way you want it to be? I don't.

In fantasy-"reality" you could probably travel for 6 hours, and then get ambushed by a group of angmarims that would kill you and rob you from all your possessions. How do you want to simulate such a situation in Lotro?

It is faked freedom at most. Nothing really matters what you choose since you can do everything anyways, and GOOD. There are 2 "real" cities at most. Making any other interaction but combat unappealing as hell.

Gone is the core RP layers and immersion... Welcomed is the new shallow hollywood "run and gun" mode. Well, maby not that welcomed.

PS. Bethesda probably used a "dungeon generator" when making FO3. I've discovered over 100 locations in the game to search for ANY kind of value. But it just wasen't happening. Over and over it was just ... well, basicly dungeons with what it felt like - randomly generated sub-way areas and monsters.

F3 is much closer to a classic FPS gameplay than an actual RPG. You run around in FPS mode, shoot with FPS aim cursor with a few dialogue lines (much less than in F1&2) with that silly zoom in to a face of the NPC with that ugly Oblivion facial expressions.
