I don't think people understand how unforgiving D2 was.

Remember 'saving a skill point'?

D2 was a good game back in the day but some of its game mechanics were really bad to new players.

ANd how is that BAD?

I LOVE calculating and deciding on into what stat I should invest or on how should I build my character.

Its like building a weapon. Its damn satisfying seeing all those numbers you decided upon being put into action.  Thats what makes arpgs enjoyable. Building your character. And if you were careless enough to NOT think when creating and advancing your character that is your problem, not game's. Why should game be casualized just to satysfy a few people who were too lazy or too casual to calculate stat advantages before investing points?

Because 'casuals' outnumber the 'hardcore'?

Giving players the ability to customize is good but is it really customize when most will either fail utterly and quit (Diablo2) or just go to 'Elitejerks.com' and copy paste?

You know what's funny?

Diablo3 is more customizable without screwing over the player like they did in Diablo2.

Diablo fanbase certainly is big enough without the need to casualize it for more mainstream audience. Most of such "casualizations " fail. Dragon Age II failed. Elder Scrolls Oblivion failed. ME3 Failed.

They had a fanbase. Thanks to the streamlining and focusing everything(including invasive and horrible online DRM) on pay2win RMT auction house, A LOT of that fanbase will go for Torchlight II and Path of Exile instead. Bu tthen again the horrible issues of game mechanics have already been highlighted in that TotalBiscuit's video.

I see nothing wrong with customisation that requires person to think on what the hell he/she/it is doing.  Half the fun of rpg games are behind the statistics and numbers behind the gameplay. If I wanted to go see a movie or play an action brawler, I would do so. I play arpg games for loot and complex numbers and I play rpg games for character roleplay and complex numbers.

Oh yes, customization. How glorious, I can now decide into which of automatically unlocking skills will I add that +4% area dmg rune that I will unlock at certain level...how complex. AN then I will equip my class-restricted generic loot that shoehorns me EVEN MORE into what Blizz wants my character to be, while every stat and everything is automatically increased to even more restrict me into playing the game the way they want me to play it. Rune system and every other bit of "customisation" in Diablocraft 3 is pretty much linnear progression veiled in lies.

Well I guess soon failures like ME3 or DAII will be also be known as "epitome" of "rpg" genre.

TLII does some innovations but overall its a logical progression of diablo-like game. Polished as hell. Everything that Diablo3 SHOULD have been.

D3 tried to "innovate" it failed. Its a cheap cash grap for blizzard through RMT auction house and entire game is built around it. It does not play as ARPG, it has no stats nor skills(thus very streamlined and castrated customization) and the whole game is pretty much a linnear-progression style just like into what WoW has degraded into through years.

D3 is NOT arpg. Its the only game(alongside Borderlands) that deserves to be called single player mmo. Its just that if borderlands is normal mmo, D3 is pay to win singleplayer mmo that reminds me of those facebook "games" that milk you of your money for nothing.

KoA was a big dissapointment to me. If the game had been anything like Skyrim in scope and game play, I may have been able to forgive the WoW-like art style, but the game felt like it stepped out of the 90s. My hopes for the MMO were dashed by KoA and seeing this video does nothing to inspire confidence.

If KOA was anything like Skyrim(ala Oblivion: Dragon Grinding Edition), I would not have touched it with even a stick.

KOA actually had an engaging COLORFUL world, good old-school lore, rpg systems and actually blended combat and rpg parts really well.

Coampred to Skyrims "skeltons, skeletons, lets bash skeletons by clicking mouse and jumping bakwards and then lets go back to that brown tundra~", KOA is miles above that.

Skyrim was too cinematic. I would not even call it a real RPG. Bethesda has not created a good game since Morrowind(which was awesome.

KOA on other hand...have not enjoyed an rpg this much since the masterpiece that was Dragon Age Origins.

the class mechanics are interesting and the exploration is fun

honestly though, the game already feels archaic compared to D3

the game will definitely fill that niche of people who want the oldschool/outdated style of dungeon crawling, but D3 is the natural evolution of the genre

So sticking to what made the genre GREAT is bad nowadays?

KoA never even came close to a million sales, or it would have been blasted everywhere by both EA and Schilling.

In fact, take a look at May 2012's statement: http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/ERTS/1819153208x0x566942/0a817daf-08b4-4e2d-bc35-c00d03059369/FINAL_Earnings_Release_withPressTables_1204pm_PDF.pdf

While willing to throw out praise for the contributions of FIFA, SWTOR, Mass Effect 3, and Battlefield to EA's bottom line, the only mention of KoA is a quick blurb of it being a "successful" release.

So, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your rose colored glasses are cracked.

And yet anything in that link fails to mention any of smaller dev successes. Where's minecraft? Or any non corporate games? Nope. oh i know why! Because its just EA games!
It would not be mentioned under EA because its not "EA" game. EA only published it. EA does not own it, nor an rights to it. EA owns all other games you quoted. THey got profits from Amalur they mentioned that, but sales numbers are not theirs to announce.

M.Pachter also happens to disagree with you.

I think SKyrim really hurt games like KoA......It just raised the bar so much on what is expected of a big time game anymore that everything else seems to fall short....If 38 had released KoA a year or two ago it would have done better.....KoA also felt too "fableish" for me......As for Copernicus, it just seems that a release date of June 2013 is really pushing it....Not so much that can they get in out in that time, but can the company stay afloat another full year without some other funding?

This is way too reminiscent of "they should have released torchlight II before diablocraft III !!!" crap I have been hearing over here.

Sorry no.

Now while better than abysmal failures that were Oblivion and "Fallout" III, Skyrim was a disappointment. Streamlined, consolized, senseless thing without any atmosphere. It felt like a movie and not like an RPG. Skyrim was pretty much a "Oblivion-Lite: The Dragon Grinding Edition".

Amalur was a great alternative for a folks like me. Amalur felt more like Elder Scrolls than Skyrim did.

not to mention that Amalur actually had an actual good combat system and beautiful world instead of "tundra, tundra tundra, oh look some skeletons(I guess I have to click mouse a few times while jumping backwards), and now more tundra, oh a mammoth, now lets go back to skeletons" of skyrim.

Amalur was met with huge critical and community praise. And Frankly I have not enjoyed an rpg this much since the masterpiece that was Dragon Age Origins.

Amalur was first game to TRULY merge true RPG gaming and Action Combat and make it work on both fronts and just like I'd take Torchlight II over the mess that is D3, I will always take Amalur over Oblivion and Skyrim. Any Day. And i have no doubt that with Amalur II, Elder Scrolls franchise will be completely surpassed(just like how diablo3 was left in the mud by TLII)

It was a little surprising to see Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning sitting pretty at number four in the NPD software sales charts for February, an impressive feat for a brand new IP. But what does the number translate to in actual sales? NPD tells Joystiq that Reckoning sold a total of 330,000 copies in the US across Xbox, PS3 and PC last month.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-sold-330-000-in-the-us-last-month/

Though if Europe and Asia bought like craaaazy they might have sold a million

That does not include steam sales or any sort of digital sales. :)

Someone should remind that schmuck that KoA only sold 330k in it's first month and has sold trickles since then.

You mean not counting pc sales , right? If yes then sure.

The real KOA sales are way over one million already which is astonishingly good.

Not to mention that due to pretty much unified critical praise for the game, Amalur is quite already established as one of the best rpg games in last few years. People KNOW what Amalur is.

Add to that the unique and beautiful look of Copernicus and I really can't see them NOT getting investors.

LOVING the art style.

Very unique architecture and world design. Can't wait to hear more about the gameplay itself, but the musical soundtrack and the graphical uniqueness already has me hooked.

By those kinds of descriptions lord of the rings, elder scrolls, torchlight oh and...oh I don't know, Real World medieval europe and africa also are copies of WOW :)

Jokes aside, those areas look nothing like the stuff in the video, not even ounce of similarity.

And I still can't see any similarities.

ARe the KOA graphics stylized? sure.

Similar to WOW? not really.

Thats as outlandish as some people claiming that Torchlight franchise looks like wow.

I and I bet everyone else would really love to play a game with this amount of thought put into the graphical design of the world and this exact style of the world. Sorry but can't think of even a single mmo that has this kind of art style or the overall feel the whole package gives off so far.
WoW and Perfect World are the two with similar art styles that pop right into my mind within seconds. I'm thinking you need to take those rose colored glasses off for a minute.
I am sorry but this looks nothing like those games.
Well, then it looks like KoA.

Which looks like WoW.

WHile it looks reminiscent of Reckoning, the art style seems to be completely different.

Reckoning looked nothing like WoW.

The architecture is fabulous.  I wish they hadn't decided to go with the typical "High Fantasy" super saturated color scheme.  Some of the close up shots revealed textures that definitely reminded me of Blizzard's style.  The lore for the game so far seem rather gritty, yet the graphical theme is anything but gritty.

I would not say its that hi-fantasy...From the lore and Reckoning I get a whole lot more "steampunky" wibe. Considering this is set a thousand years after Reckoning and in reckoning we already had some machinery, I'd say this is more like "industrial revolution" kind of setting.

ITs supposedly releasing next june and company did manage to pay its current loan paycheck. Reckoning II(or however it will be called) is also supposedly still in development.   So despite that financial struggle, they might just pull through. Of course they will need to search for some private investors(read: not states but companies).
I don't know...

After what their going through right now , what investor is going to risk it ?

Hopefully things will work out , but I wouldnt hold my breath.

They are not going through "anything" that is not fixed by investors pouring money. They have an established setting, a brand recognition, a critical acclaim for existing product and a fair amount of publicity.

To me that sounds like a perfect bait for investors.

Now if we heard of some sort of internal struggles in company, serious roadblocks in copernicus development, etc, then yeah, we should be worried then.

Hmm, pretty nice, but seems it? will be quite stylized in that 'What WOW 2 might look like' kinda way, which I'm not really a fan of.

Can't really tell much more until we see some characters.

Scope of the world seems really great though.

There's a huge 10 000 year history for the setting created already.. MMO is set in "Age of Heroes" time after every singleplayer game that will come out and few major cataclysms. THe world map as well as the timeline descs have a lot of story possibilities, IMO.

The most important thing IMO is that it LOOKS original. Design-wise it does NOT look like any other mmo in the market and that is a great first thing to achieve. The music also is unique and very nice for my old ears.

I know, but they missed payroll.  Employees won't work for free.  And the news today is the State, thankfully, isn't giving them any more cash.  Seems like they put out this video so they can attract some private investors and offset all the negative attention they've got recently.

99% Chance employees knew about not getting their pay for now already. Having been in that kind of business, thats the kind of risk every company takes every time they release a new product.

And well yeah. Till now they had no reason to release stuff about the game. Now they have a reason. Considering the amount of publicity this little stuff got now and the sales of KOA I do not see them waiting for investors for too long. The fact that stuff looks VERRRY PRETTTY also helps too.

Very nice looking. Hope they expand on the combat and skills system they use on KoA.

We already know for sure that combat system might NOT be the same as in KoA. Its unknown on how the combat will work in mmo exactly but they have been very clear that they want to keep the combo driven rpg/action mix for the singleplayer franchise they are building.

They are going to lose so many sales by taking so long to release it.  I'd be surprised if they sold even half as many copies as the first one did.  If they released last year at this time they would have grabbed a bunch of people that got impatient waiting for D3.  At this point their best bet will be the TL MMO, assuming that's still on track.  A Massively Mutlipayer DClone could be interesting or a complete mess.

Its a good thing Diablocraft 3 was so utterly disappointing, then.

And as the unreasonable hype for it is dying down as reality sets in, A whole lot more of people are interested in TL II now, I'd say.
