General: Skelton: Hugged Your Internet Lately?
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/20/09 12:45:27 PM
I'm not trying to turn this into a political thread, but if you haven't heard about this in the USA, it's time you were informed... That sonofabitch John McCain has proposed a bill he calls the "Internet Freedom Act". The irony is that the bill is - very literally - the EXACT OPPOSITE of freedom - for us. The bill gives ISPs the right to throttle content to their users. In other words, if you use an ISP that is owned by a company that also owns CNN, for example, your speeds when viewing CNN.com will be great, while they can slow down your attempt at viewing MSNBC.com or FoxNews.com. Democrat, Republican, Independent - it doesn't matter. If you use the internet, you DO NOT want this legislation to pass. |

General: The List: Five Scariest MMO Launches

Right, but WoW had that after launch and getting WAY more players than they ever dreamed (they were literally planning for 100k). Aion had that in the headstart for pre-orders when they knew exactly how many players they'd have to deal with.
Ohhhh... see I thought Aion's queue times didn't get crazy until after the official launch. I don't remember reading about people freaking out over 7 hour queues during head start. DOH! If you mentioned that in the article, it must have completely gone over my head. I'll go re-read it. My bad! |

General: The List: Five Scariest MMO Launches
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/30/09 4:16:51 PM
2 Things: 1. When WoW launched, the queues were just as insane as the queues for Aion. In fact, if you watch the queue dance that you linked in your article, it will continue to climb well into the hundreds of minutes, soaring past 8+ hours of queue time. 2. Ants are not bugs. They are insects. That is all. P.S. I don't even own Aion, so I don't have a dog in that fight. I'm just saying WoW's queue was just as bad. |

I came back to EQ2 a few weeks ago. Based on what I've seen and learned thus far, I would recommend a druid over a templar. If you have a set group, you'll be able to contribute more DPS while still effectively healing. Plus (and this is a huge one for me) the druid gets to port around, reducing travel times. This will add up to TONS of time saved later on. In addition to dps and sufficient heals, I believe you'll also get Evac, which is handy in more ways than one. That being said, the decision is ultimately yours, and if you chose a Templar over a druid, you'd have no one to compete with for loot since you'll be the only one wearing plate. Hehehe. |

A friend and I decided to reroll from scratch. We're gonna try a Coercer / Inquisitor duo. He's getting married next week though, so I've been playing both my conjy and my defiler a bit here and there (as well as starting my Coercer to level 12). So far, I enjoy the Conjy and the Defiler in different ways, but I feel like the Conjy is more fun to play. For one thing, it's much less forgiving since you've got no heals (other than a small pet-only heal). With the defiler, I can tackle 4 mobs at a time if I ward myself prior to pulling, and while it's fun, it's not nearly as risky... and I'm big on risk vs reward. |

I'm actually hoping for another Everquest. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I just hope they go "back to their roots" more with a more group-oriented game-play experience. |

Community votes! The best PvE found in which mmorpg?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/29/09 9:42:19 AM
I've played all the games on your list except FFXI and Darkfail, and I'd say the winner is EQ2 by a long-shot. The character depth and customization is terrific. The lore, quests, array of spells and abilities, amount of races and classes to choose from - there's nothing that comes close to it. Crafting is a ton of fun in EQ2 as well. There's a ton of Alternate Advancement you can gain for your character, and they keep adding more. Not to mention... even grinding mobs in EQ2 requires a competent gamer unless you intentionally seek out the weakest mobs to grind w/ your character class. Otherwise the AI is pretty decent, and at higher levels just about any encounter could kill you if you get lazy. |

Sorry to hear you're still having this issue, Loke. I played for a short while last night and didn't disconnect once. I logged in for less than 15 minutes earlier tonight w/o any issues as well, but 15 minutes isn't a gauge of connectivity problems, obviously. I plan to play quite a bit tomorrow. Hopefully the issue will be resolved by then, or I'd assume I will run into it myself. I'll drop by tomorrow to see if your connection has improved, and let you know how I'm doing for comparison. |

Hmmm. I honestly didn't notice anything on Guk yesterday afternoon. I haven't logged in to play today yet though... too busy with work. A friend of mine I play with sent me a txt this morning saying he couldn't even get to character select though, so it's obvious they're having some sort of issues. Honestly, there's so many positive additions in this patch that I don't really mind it if they have issues along the way as long as they fix them in a timely manner and don't have to keep servers down for an extended period. That would suck (not so much for me, but for others). |

So I decided to come back to EQ2 after maybe 2-ish years of absence. I don't have a ton of time to play, so I'd like a character that can do solo work but will also be at least somewhat desirable for grouping (when I have the time). I've got a 27 Defiler and a 29 Conjuror on my account, and I'm not sure which to invest my time in. I enjoyed playing them both. They each had their own strengths and weaknesses, and both classes were a challenge - which I love. So for those still playing the game (especially long-time players) which would you recommend I play when I have time to sit down for a gaming session? Obviously I know opinions will vary, so please explain why you feel the way you do. Thanks! |

How did you learn about your first MMO?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/17/09 12:22:46 PM
I co-ran an AD&D group that met and played together weekly for many years. One day I showed up at my friend's house (he and I shared DM'ing duties and rotated on-and-off every 3 or 4 weeks) and he had his computer fired up beta-testing the original EQ (actually, I think it may have been Alpha at this point). Well, to say the least he and I were both extremely anal about "attention to detail" type stuff. After a few weeks he had gained a reputation with the devs as someone who provided excellent feedback and was a valuable tester. When they thanked him, he suggested they invite me to test as well, which they did. Bingo... I was hooked. Tested EQ until release and played it for 6 years thereafter. |

Reading comprehension FTW. You are correct. Snarlingwolf is not. Yay for finding drama where there is none! (Mind you, I don't play WAR and don't care. But really, if you're not going to comprehend what you read, you shouldn't post about it.) |

Eh? I've had zero trouble patching the game, and every time I've fired it up to log in (except once) the server was up. Have I just been lucky.... or maybe your connection sucks? Honestly I haven't heard anyone else complain about slow patch speeds except on launch day w/ that major patch FUBAR. |

IP-to-MMO You'd Sell Your First Born For
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/09/09 3:00:47 PM
Damn, I can't believe I didn't think of this with my last post, but... I'd give my first born, your first born, and one of my testicles for an MMORPG set in the Black Company world as written by Glen Cook. If you're into very dark, evil, mind-bending fantasy, you owe it to yourself to read these books. Start with the Books of the North (the original trilogy of the Black Company). |

The story was butchered, the animation was terrible, and on top of that they used a weird mix of animation and CGI that completely sucked. I'd love a Dragonlance game, but I'm not sure if it'd make a good MMO based on all the recent MMO disasters. I'd LOVE to see a Rifts mmo - done right. You could have a character creator as vast as the CoX / Champions creator, because literally anything is possible in Rifts. Wanna play a vampire? Fine. A gargoyle? Fine. A mech-pilot? Fine. A cyborg? Fine. A dragon? Fine. You get the point. |

Hehe. You don't need to change your avatar, bud. I may have joined in '04, but I hardly post (as you can see by my post count), so it's not like anyone really recognizes me. Besides, having a pissing contest over sharing an avatar is just.... jack-assery of the highest order. |

I got the beta up and running on my laptop earlier this morning since I'm out of town, but my machine is far from top-notch since I do 99% of my work from home. I noticed combat lag, but I was assuming it was due to my laptop struggling to keep up. I'm anxious to get back home where I can check out all the eye-candy on a top-end rig. We'll see.... I'm hoping the combat is more responsive. |
