[Column] General: Five Things to Look for at Gamescom
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/14/12 5:59:07 PM
Nice list. I'm particularly interested in Blade & Soul and, having played FFXIV earlier, A Realm Reborn. Who knows, maybe I'll find myself once again exploring the world of Eorzea..? I would be surprised (pleasantly surprised) if Blizzard announces Titan this year. But you never know. Next year feels more likely to me though. Anyone else hoping SOE will say more about EverQuest Next? I really ... must know more ... gah. Toss us some screenshots already, please? >;3 |

Originally posted by cooper85 I don't like the animations, in or out of combat. It's not my fault, I just don't like them. For a 2012 game, they look very dated and almost an afterthought in their current form. Trust me, there are things about TSW that seem really cool to me. I want this game to do well. Funcom has gotten quite a bit of $ from me for AoC. So it's definitely not an "agenda". Not in my case :p cya. |

Originally posted by cooper85 Will you at least admit though that TSW has crappier animations all around than most other AAA MMO titles? Heck, even Funcom's own AoC was developed with better animations 5 years ago. Sorry, but when I look at TSW animations, I cringe. They're just bad. |

The Secret World: Removing Mystery's Shroud
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/11/12 4:03:02 PM
I see what you mean about the being "spoiled" aspect. I think Saints Row the Third has maybe spoiled me a little with their animations, and maybe FFXIV to an extent when it comes to an MMO. I don't think anyone is expecting Funcom to raise the bar on animations with TSW. I think what a lot of people are saying though is that they're mostly horrid and dated in their current form, and should be improved upon. :) |

The Secret World: Removing Mystery's Shroud
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/11/12 3:10:49 PM
I used to be really hyped for TSW. Now it's just feels meh to me. My opinion may change, and I hope it does, but Funcom has to make a believer out of me again. If I buy this game, it most likely will be a few months down the road after launch, unless I'm sold again after NDA is lifted. I mean, it's like a little over a month until TSW is supposedly gonna launch, and I'm still struggling to find informations about this game. A lot of the videos seem to be old and crappy, or very scripted demonstrations. Character creation, animations and sound are all very important to me. These don't make or break a game for me per se, but they come freaking close if I can't stand them or feel they were only done half-a**. "This means there will be times when swinging a sword or using your fist weapons will look odd, but it's the price they've had to pay for allowing players the ability to move while attacking at any time. Basically, it becomes more difficult to structure animations that always look perfect when the characters can't move during the animations."
Ya know, I'm not sure I completely buy this from Funcom. I mean, take a game like Saints Row the Third. Granted, it's a single player game and I'm not sure what engine it uses, but you can move around freely while attacking and..omg does it look really fluid, natural, and good. Funcom should study that game's animations ;3 |

Funcom please for the love of god redo your character animations

Gotta /agree with the OP on this one. That strafing animation, for example, makes me want to gouge my eyes out. =q.q= |

I think the Elin are adorable, but I'd never consider playing one because the vocal minority ruined them for me. inb4 inevitable reason to go /sigh. Oh wait, looks like I'm too late. |

The Secret World: Wondrous or Worrisome?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/27/12 2:52:03 PM
Thanks for a cool response. =) If Funcom can pull it off, it sounds like there will be something for just about everyone who can get into the modern day setting in their MMO. Not a bad strategy at all, and I definitely plan to try TSW. Still, I've got this thing for Asian aesthetics in fantasy MMOs. Guess I should've mentioned that before too. ;x EDIT: modern day setting *with a twist*, of course. ^.^ |

The Secret World: Wondrous or Worrisome?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/27/12 12:54:34 PM
"It’s not a niche game by any stretch. It will have broad appeal, particularly to those who want something other than elves and dragons and high fantasy." I think i agree with this, actually. After having originally thought of TSW as appealing more to a niche market, I'm starting to think it will have broad appeal as said in the ariticle. How well this game does~especially in the early going~I think comes down to 1) execution on Funcom's part, 2) competition from other titles, and 3) their handling of the cash shop (i.e. will it actually be all fluff stuffs). "The Secret World is being billed as the “thinking man’s MMO”" This is good and bad for me. On the one hand, this is a welcome change from the lack of depth and the mindlessness seen in so many other games. And I think the overall community in TSW is going to be a helpful and mature one, and that's a good thing. On the other hand, sometimes I want nothing more than eye-kandy infused mindless MMO kick-butt action without having to problem solve. So bleh. If either TERA or this was launching F2P then I'd sub to the other and probably play both for a while, but I'm not doing two subs at the same time. |
|
|
I think TERA would eventually go F2P, as it seems the trend for most MMOs of late, but personally I don't see it happening as soon as OP suggests. |
|
|
I tried TERA for first time this past weekend and I had fun and enjoyed my few hours worth of eyegasm (can I say that here?) :3 Glad you really enjoy it OP. It's about what each individual finds enjoyable, something trolls never seem to get. I think it's going to be tough choice for me between this and TSW. Both have their own appeal to me in different ways. |

So I was looking forward to this launching in April too, but all in all I think this is a good decision by Funcom to push the release date out to June. Maybe during the recent media-on-hand week, testing out the game, they got some more feedback that the game just isn't quite ready to ship. This'll give them time to fix it up a bit more, and they may even pick up a first wave of TERA refugees as an added bonus, lol. I'm not worried about TSW potentially releasing too close to GW2. Those that are presently interested in both games will continue to do so, and most likely will buy both, with GW2 being B2P w/ no-sub and all. My personal hype for TSW hasn't decreased, if anything it's even better than before because I really do think Funcom is trying to redeem themselves with this one. I hope they pull it off. Only time will tell. |
|
Originally posted by ProfRed I hope you're right. I really do want to see TSW do well. I plan to try this and TERA. I love the whole idea of 3 factions working together against the darkness, but in reality they're "frenemies". Of course the setting and lore is going to be cool as well. We shall see! :) |
|
Originally posted by BilboDoggins No, I said it won't be "dead on arrival", as in no one plays it, based on CBT alone. How else can I interpret "dead on arrival" to mean? Care to elaborate? As far as TERA's longer term success goes, that's all just speculation on anyone's part right now. Success is a very subjective term anyway. Some people might think 200,000 subs *for example* for TERA after its first 30-days is a big fail, while others may see the same number as a success, ya know?
EDIT: I picked 200,000 subs after 30-days to help with the example. I think there's a good chance it will be higher than that in actuality. |

Ok, prediction time, fun fun: TERA~~ I think TERA will do OK especially during the early going. Not fantastic, but not a flop either. And it's certainly not "dead on arrival" in NA/EU. A good percentage of the feedback from CBT1 already proves this so stop being silly :P It may eventually go F2P. TSW~~ I'm really interested in this, but somehow I think it disappoints a little. It will be a niche game with a loyal following comprised of those looking for something a little different. It won't see the same steep dropoff of subs that Age of Conan did, but then again it won't sell as many boxes as Conan did either. GW2~~ Well this is just going to sell a crapton of boxes. But will the hype pan out? dun dun dun (lol, I have no idea) C9~~ Steals a chunk of Vindictus's playerbase. That's all I've got. |
|
|
I will probably try this game someday. Thank you OP~! These guides look very useful. =) |

Originally posted by Pivotelite I may only hop into beta for CBT 2, haven't decided. I haven't pre-ordered yet, so... From some of the recent YouTube vids I've seen where people have general chat going on their screen, the wider community thus far is just horrid. I guess that is to be expected at this stage, but I still find it annoying. |
