I'm totally there with you. I don't want to buy a mount for $20. I want to kill a boss riding it and loot it. I don't want to loot some sword that looks like a rusty piece of junk on purpose to drive me to the cash shop to buy the cool lightning effect. I want quests in the game to get these items. They have value for a reason and all cosmetics are is Pay2LookCool instead of playing the game to get the items you pay the game to get the items.

It just feels so virtual shopping mall to me, I really hate putting up with it. Every time I think they could have put that in the game as a drop or quest not a credit card swipe.

If you were a CEO of a mmorpg dev studio and you were not able to maintain profitability with your game with a P2P model - and you wanted to keep your game alive and your employees getting a steady paycheck - what would you do?

Make a better game?

It can be done. I've played more Skyrim in the past year than I have spent in any one particular MMORPG.

Good point. Skyrim's servers seem to maintain 24/7 uptime, and their GMs are some of the best in the industry. How are they on delivering expansions for it? Monthly? Once a year? They are expanding the game, right? Whatever the case, I hear their engine handles PVP battles of 100+ players flawlessly.

1- Skyrim isn't an mmo.  Elder Scrolls Online is an mmo.

2- If he was referrting to Skyrim as en example of a CEO of an mmorpg making a better game to maintain profits, then he is comparing an mmo to a single player game.

3-Elder Scrolls Online is going buy to play with a CASH SHOP - LOL, so that example won't even apply in a few months.  If anything, the example validates cash shops.

Not being snarky, just pointing things out.

Microsoft has already stated today  that despite the buyout, they will not allow former SOE titles to be ported over to Xbox.

Sony hasn't released a contract with Columbia Nova, either.

Bad investment.

Could you please link a source?  I'm trying to read up on all the info I can about the situation.

Tahyang (NA) and Dahuta (EU).
NA's doing fine, only has a wait time on like 3 servers at the moment.  Actually, I think I can even see which 2 servers have the potential to become the "ghost town" servers.

I remember the first week or so, GW2 was absolutely riddled with accounts being hacked because of their pathetic security.  Not only does ESO not have this problem at all, but this has probably been the smoothest launch to date (and I've played them all).  Also, the quest bugs all seem to be resolved.  Great job, Zenimax!

Technically, it's Headstart, not launch.  Just saying.

Nah, they're calling it Early Access.  Launch is in a few more days, then the unwashed masses can all join in.

Most games have some sort of conflict embedded in the lore.  Hell, most of the time it's the central point of the game.  So how can a roleplayer who has chosen to roleplay a heroic knight for the "good guys", completely ignore fighting the "bad guys"?

How can he potentially see a fight break out between his faction and another, and just ignore it?  Doesn't that kind of shatter the whole character they're playing?

Because today PvP in MMOs is generally a KoS (Kill on Sight) matter.

There is no real reason to PvP in MMOs, if something moves has to be killed.

This sort of PvP is perfet in Multiplayer games like Battlefield and CoD where every player is equipped the same and it's all about player skills.

In MMOs PvP is generally about higher level (or better geared) players that grief lower level player knowing that they have gear and stats advantage which give them the edge, rarely is about player skills.

So while I can play for hours CoD, I tend to avoid MMO PvP because they are hardly balanced fights and tend to be griefers paradise.

***Disclaimer***  I am not, have never been, and doubt I will ever be a roleplayer.

I play mmos to PvP.  That's the entire purpose of the game for me.  Sure other things are fine for biding my time, but PvP is the focus.  I don't agree with PvE only players, but I can at least understand that they just want to fight mobs.

One thing I do not understand is the PvE only roleplayer.  I know some RPers pvp, but from my experience, the vast majority do so very seldomly or not at all.  Meanwhile, they stay completely in character and always adhere to the lore of the game........

Does anyone else see the glaring hole in that?

Someone help me out here........

Did the fight break out in a battleground/ pvp area/ area instanced just to fight in away from the main game?  Lots of RP'ers I know will fight there.

I completely agree. I think the industry is in for a huge paradigm shift in this direction and it's for the better, I think. We just have to reeducate ourselves on the true purpose of alpha and beta testing, that it's not supposed to be a demo experience and sales tool.

The problem is, as long as companies continue to treat alpha and beta testing as a sales tool, customers will continue to treat these as demos.  And rightly so.

If they hadn't made alpha access paid for, every moron, kid and their dog would have logged in, and the result would have been abysmal. I understand why they made the alpha and beta "paid for" for 100% access. It gets rid of many of the usual parasites that infect most other MMORPG betas. And you get decent unique items and perks for when the game is released too.

They also offer full refund if you don't like the alpha, which is way more honest than many other MMORPG developers (including all the kickstarter trash). So basically, the consumer takes zero risk here, the company takes all the risk.

What's wrong with that? You're able to try a game months before it's finalized, get your voice heard for changes that may affect the final result, AND you can get all your money back if you really don't like it.

Not going to go into details because of the NDA, but I'm most likely going to upgrade my account from "Explorer" to "Trailblazer" consider what I have seen so far. SoE, for once, are 100% honest, didn't lie on a single thing, and you as a consumer take absolutely no risk.

Originally posted by Aelious is the right address for "The Everquest Franchise" in this case.

You can just type it in a search engine and see the results. First one has Piestro verify a few posts down on SoE forums that it's correct.

Yup.  Good luck getting the alpha client without clicking any links.

It's legit -- from a marketing firm.  I'd post the link, but it's not letting me atm.  I uploaded an image from the Planetside 2 website for the "Stay Connected" promotion, just browse images I've uploaded.

I don't think so.  The only confirmed place getting things like exp potions is asia.  I imagine it's just going to make it easier to buy pets/mount and account services in game for the NA/EU.

That's like saying there is a fire in the other room of the house but I'm going to ignore it because I don't use that room and it will never spread to where I'm hanging out.

No, that's like saying that the people that built your house built one like it in asia, and it is now on fire.  Maybe the builders set the fire themselves, maybe not.

I'm not gonna worry about it until mine catches fire.

Headstart access to names.

Call me unimaginative, but I like to use the same clichéd names in all my games, the names people later on try to spell differently because I got the name first.  No, not Sephiroth.

If people end up buying things in the game, it only benefits Sony, no?

Haven't seen this posted on the forums, or if it was, I missed it:

Dunno if any of you would be dusting off your old accounts and play until the world ends.  Apparently quite a few old time players are making a comeback if the forums can be believed.

I feel like somebody is going to argue with your statements a lot. Mostly the statements on PvP. The arguments will center around how limiting the freedom of PvP takes away from the sandbox, or how limiting the freedom of PvP will reduce the realism of the sandbox.

I'm not, because I more or less agree with a lot of what you're saying, I think. I mostly just skimmed your wall of text. But I'm pretty sure the PvP response is incoming.

To be honest this post seemed like the longest possible form of "PvP needs to be optional" I've ever seen.

It has a lot of paragraphs and a lot of words, but it appears to simply be a rehash of the never ending argument about whether PvP should be optional or always on and this poster is of the mindset that it needs to be optional (one which I've posted about myself), but that post is a TL:DR overkill.

Yah.  Jus let the people that wanna kill each other flag themselves for PVP, the rest can be on their way.  Of course, then the people that are flagged are ready and waiting for a fight, so killing them isn't as much fun.

Dunno about all that, but I swear the lion warrior running animation in the reveal video when he's running on all fours looks just like the GW2 Charr running animation.  Maybe it's just me.

The idea comes and goes . . . was even a movie or TV series in the works for a while.

Originally posted by lizardbones Sub game make more money at release. F2P games make more money long term. So games release as P2P, then go F2P to maximize the money made. I suppose it's possible for a F2P game to make a bunch of money at release too, but we haven't really had a good example of it.
Your example of it is Guild Wars 2, but to acknowledge that would cause several heads around here to explode.

GW2 isn't a F2P game. It's B2P, which is different. It has the advantage of collecting a lot of the initial sales, with the longevity of F2P games. It's really more like the P2P games that go F2P than it is like a F2P game.

Actually, it is a F2P game in every aspect of its design and monetization, but with a front loaded client fee.

"It's B2P, which is different."

That statement is the greatest gift that MMO gamers ever gave the industry.

Hmmm . . . so if every new F2P mmo from here on out charged you $50-$60 up front just to play it, as long as it didn't have a sub, you would still call it F2P?  The fact that I cannot even log into it without paying the fee up front doesn't change the fact I suppose.

I guess the community is grateful for now knowing that the term buy to play (B2P) is hogwash.

EQ2.  I've seen ppl pimp out their houses in ways that blow my mind.
