That's already happened though. Besides EQN what other big budget "AAA" MMO is on the way? The only MMOs being produced are by independent studios, large or small. Large devs and publishers have already moved on to MOBAs and other team based multiplayer games, or simply went back to what they were doing before they tried for a piece of the WoW pie.

I don't know what your waiting on, there is no bubble ready to burst.

Typical shit from Trion..they conveniently remove themselves from any responsibility towards the players. Shameful company...

I know you support Trion with undying loyalty but everything they do in the last few years is shameful/greedy or just plain messed up.  They cant even give away some packs without denying responsibility since they know there will most likely be issues.    How many other giveaways on this site have to have a disclaimer that the "partner" (since you want to argue over the definition of sponsor) does not take any responsibility for the product they are giving?  Here is a perfect example:

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/1071/view/news/read/34054/Skyforge-Ultimate-Founders-Pack-Giveaway-5-.html

No disclaimer there.  Nothing to hide.

They always have this disclaimer on contests, but don't take my word for it, here:

Look at all those shady companies with something hide. You guys are trying way too hard to hate on Trion.

Another attempt at an MMORPG using the ARMA Engine. I pass on this one, we all know how well DayZ is doing and how completely unusable the Engine is for an MMORPG.

Looked to me like they were using the Unreal Engine 4. It's a better choice than Real Virtuality 4 or Enfusion, or whatever Bohemia is calling their engine now, but Unreal isn't known for making the best MMOs.

I have my doubts about the team's ability to produce everything they're talking about. Listing an ARMA 3 mod and Mortal Online doesn't really instill much confidence in me. With the broad scope of the project they're going to run into a lot of things that UE4 doesn't natively support, which they'll have to attempt to code themselves.

Designing a simple game, let alone a massive piece of software like an MMO is nothing like modding (especially when that game was built to be modded). The Mortal Online developers figured that out pretty quick. If Mortal Online is anything to go by it will eventually have some of the systems talked about, but they'll be overly complex and very poorly implemented.

That 270X you linked comes with XFX's lifetime warranty, it has nothing to do with Best Buy.

http://xfxforce.com/en-us/support/xfx-warranty

Right now on Newegg there's 3 280s that are cheaper than that 270X, including the XFX (which would also come with a lifetime warranty, or should). Even when not on sale the prices are equal to the XFX 270X. Keep in mind, the 280 is significantly more powerful at everything that matters than the 270X.

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-280-vs-Radeon-R9-270X

It's hard to say if the free games make up for the extra cost without knowing what they are. If they're fairly new then it might be worth it, though you won't be running them as well. If they're older games that could be gotten for super cheap during a Steam sale then not so much.

But the article says they partnered with Trion.

All they're saying is that Trion gave them a few keys for starter packs. What MMORPG.com decides to do with them is up to them. In the even that something goes wrong and a winner doesn't receive a key, or the key is invalid, then Trion isn't responsible, MMORPG.com is (which means you'll probably be SOL).

Sadboxes really aren't all that impressive when your playing by yourself, at least not to me. But, even the worst ones can shine in groups.

Some of my fondest MMO memories are from a few years ago playing H&H with my brother and a random group of Russians who just kind of showed up near our settlement one day and then never left. Of course, things didn't go well for our merry little band when a much larger group of Chinese players settled to our south. But, even watching everything we had all worked so hard for come crashing down around us was fun in it's own way. The whole experience is something I won't ever forget.

It sounds to me like your just burnt out after having played pretty much every themepark MMO that's worth playing. Maybe you should give something a little more sandbox a shot?

My personal suggestion would be to give Haven & Hearth a shot. Try it out first with just you and your husband and learn the basics. After that, search the forums and try to find an active village to join.

If H&H doesn't look like your kind of game then there's others to choose from. The only game you should probably stay away from is Mortal Online. Then again, you might somehow find it fun, even with all its bugs and overly complicated, yet poorly designed systems.

I hear a lot of positive things about the game. I was going to check it out when it released but it lost me at the P2W cash shop. People buying mounts and other items earn them a type of exp that boosts your char stats making you more powerful. I would need to hear some strong words on how this system is not P2W before I would try it. As far as game play, this is the first bit of bad I have heard.

You automatically assuming that the existence of a cash shop means it's a P2W game tells me that it's not worth anyone's time to explain in detail why it's not P2W. If you have so little interest in the game that you won't even find out for yourself whether your initial, uninformed opinion on the shop is correct or not then why should someone else take the time to try and 'sell' you on the game?

It only takes five to ten minutes to download and install, assuming your internet and/or PC aren't junk, go take a look at the shop yourself.

I see a lot of parallels to Trove honestly - the writer calls Crowfalls concepts new but are they really?

Trove:

Procedurally generated "Adventure worlds" - these are temporary, and have varying degrees of difficulty.

Fully destructible worlds

Permanent Guild world's called - Clubs - no monsters spawn, can build whatever you want, to fully build everything you need resources from adventure worlds which hold recipes and materials

Characters persist in Trove - adventure worlds are wiped and new ones are created constantly

The main difference is Trove is 100% PvE - so no need for lengthy campaigns

In many ways Crowfall is a "PvP Trove" with smooth "Voxel farm" instead of blocks, and due to PvP timed campaigns.

These concepts are not new - just saying.

Please research existing game designs before saying "most brilliant idea anyone has come up with in a long time".

Heh, it's funny that you posted this. While watching the kickstarter video I kept thinking to myself how much this sounded like a PvP version of Trove.

It's a shame that so many people have skipped over Trove because of its graphics, or because of Trion. If people are going to get so excited over the concepts in Crowfall then they should really give Trove another look.

Rereading the announcement....I was wondering how this is possible:

"We have partnered with Blizzard Entertainment to give away 3000 Beta Access Keys!"

and

"Blizzard Entertainment is not a sponsor or administrator of this offer"

Didn't Blizzard sponsor the keys? Did you hack them or how did you MMORPG.com get those keys? It isn't from Blizzard because you said  so which leaves few options on how to obtain that amount of keys and none that I can imagine are legal. Can you please clarify that because I dont want to throw CFAA in the room but  it seems weird to me. How can you partner with someone owning something you offer but that partner isnt a sponsor? Not a lawyer here so just curious.

It just means that Blizzard handed over 3,000 keys to MMORPG.com to do with as they please. Once ownership of the keys switched Blizzard washed their hands of any responsibility for them.

They're basically saying that if they (MMORPG.com) manage to mess up the giveaway somehow then don't go crying to Blizzard, as they (Blizzard) have nothing to do with this giveaway.

I don't know how this all got turned on me.

All I did was point out the irony that free MMOs cost more to play than P2P MMOs.

I don't care if there are people that play MMOs half-assed. But for the people that do pay to experience all the content a game has to offer, are paying more in a "free" game than a subbed game, to do so.

Nobody that is for F2P games will ever admitt that they spend money, they have don't have the balls. Because they are the same people we see that call sub models outdated and scams. Yet, they are paying twice as much (on average as a whole).

THAT is what the data shows. On average, as a whole, the F2P playerbase is spending over twice as much as the playerbase of the "outdated" "scam" sub models.

I'll freely admit that I spend money of F2P games, why shouldn't I? I don't see why so many people think that F2P games are so undeserving of their money.

Generally, when I put money into a F2P game I wind up spending more on cash shop points (or whatever they use) than I would have payed for a one month sub. But, I don't do so every single month, and it often takes me much longer than a month to spend those points, unless I'm buying something really expensive (like an expansion).

I don't like subs, and I said I'd never play another sub game years ago. Since then I've played more games, met more people who have become friends and had a lot more fun, all while spending far less.

I don't know if F2P killed the genre, however I feel that the subscription model didn't help it any.  Not becuase $15 is to expensive, but the quality of games trying to charge that amount is/was subpar.

I think it has less to do with MMOs not being quality (i.e., fun) enough to charge a sub and more to do with people thinking they're money is worth more than it is. Sub fans expect so much for their dollar, monthly updates, 24/7 support, weekly or daily GM events, and so on. To them that's reasonable, but in reality it's just not.

I'm not even going to go into the hypocrisy that is complaining about F2P games costing more than a sub, while also claiming they'd pay double, triple, even quadruple the current $15 a month for a "quality" sub game. No, what almost killed this genre isn't the subscription, it's the people that refused to pay it. It's now those same people who are angry that MMO companies have shifted their focus over to the F2P "casuals" that saved the genre. They're literally angry that the genre they abandoned turned around and abandoned them.

The games are different genres though, let alone run by different companies, if you really want to draw comparisons, then you'll have to do it from within the same genre, and ideally the same company, except, previous examples are that NCSoft would rather shut a game down than go F2P, and no amount of wishful thinking can change that, lets face it, City of Heroes/Villains was a way more popular/liked game than Wildstar ever was, it would have been hugely easy to convert it to a cash shop driven F2P game too, but instead, they chose to shut it down, even though at the time it was probably still 'profitable', i sincerely doubt that NCSoft would sink any more money into the game to try and convert it to F2P, they have little enough reason for that as it is.

City of Heroes did go F2P and it still didn't save the game. I don't think it was as popular near the end as its fans like to think. In its heyday I'm sure it was more popular than WS, but near it's end? I doubt it, I imagine that WS as of right now is more popular than CoH was when it made the switch and if that's true then there's no reason not to do the same for WS. Then again, I could be wrong.

What good is short term surge if in long terms game doesnt have almost any prospects? Yeah, if you think of money grabbing scheme like "convert to F2P with minimal costs, grab what you can and then either put game in maintenance mode (ala vanguard) or shut it down", sure F2P is a thing to do.

What good is just shutting the game down when you could cut it down, strip it up and possibly bring it back to life making it more profitable than ever? And if not, well then at least you'll make a nice stack of cash before flipping the switch. Or, you could just say to hell with it and shut it down.

The difference is, one way makes a lot of money (at least in the short term) and could potentially make the game successful. The other doesn't net you anything, except some bad press.

Why even bother buying out a company not related to your industry if you're only going to lay everyone off after buying it? Seems like a waste of money to me.

Fire the senior staff and bring in new people that will do the same job for half the pay and fewer (or no) benefits, it's just SOP when one company acquires another. It helps to keep the operating costs down, and quells any problems the new owners might have had with the old higher-ups, while they push forward with whatever plan they had when they made the purchase.

I wonder, will they actually try to grow the company from here, or will they just liquidate it? I guess that depends on how much they think Daybreak is worth and how much they paid for SOE.

Personally I don't think Daybreak is going anywhere any time soon. EQN might get cancelled, no need for it really when Landmark already exists. There's nothing they were going to do in EQN that they can't just turn around and do with Landmark. If I were in charge at this investment firm that's what I'd be thinking anyways. Why pay for two fairly similar games?

Now, if we see Smedley bail here before long, then we'll know it's over. Some will cheer and hope that the company will have a brighter future, but my thinking is that Smedley isn't going to release his death grip on this company until he knows for sure that it's finished. I could be wrong, of course. Smedley could simply step down and someone else step up. But, I just have a feeling that if Smedley goes then Daybreak won't be far behind him.

Sadly, at this pace, Wildstar is more likely to be canceled entirely than even go F2P. I hate to say it, but its true. The game devs just can't appeal to a general population, and at this point if it tried to go F2P, it would likely still struggle..

People around here just love pulling shit from their ass. You actually think that with the money they're trying to recoup from the project that they would cancel before even trying f2p? You're insane. Look at SWTOR. That game is doing better then ever after a shameful performance at a sub model.

Can you explain where you came up with the idea that the game would struggle even if going f2p? Is it just because you don't like the game? Or are you just pulling poo from your bum? It sounds like poo from the bum to me. Although I won't claim to know the actual cost, I'm sure the game could be converted for f2p for far less then the hit they would take financially by just shutting it down now.

What they have invested in WIldstar up to this point is a sunk cost. Sunk costs are irrelevant when making decisions about future investments. COnverting to F2P costs more money. So NCSoft will decide if it's worth pouring yet more money to try and save th game. They will invest more money if they think the game can actually succeed and give them good returns. However, the initial investment which is LOST now is not a factor when making this decision. Economics and FInance 101 for you.

However, the reason why so many people think that Wildstar will be shut down is because NCSoft have done this in the past a few times. City of Heroes was a P2P game which was shut down. NCSoft didn't want to convert it to F2P.

Seeing as how Wildstar is a massive flop, I won't be suprised if NCSoft are unwilling to invest the money to convert it to F2P.

Statement in green, there is no way you can be sure about what you just stated because you don't know how much NCSoft have invested in the game and you don't know how much it will cost them to convert it to F2P.

Really, there's zero reason not to go F2P. I don't know how much it would cost them to convert, but chances are they would recoup whatever it cost them fairly quickly, considering the quick surge of earnings that other devs have reported when switching.. If they've already written off the initial investment as a loss, then what's the harm in putting forth the money to switch when it's almost certain you'll at least make your money back?

I don't think anyone can judge what will happen with this game based off of NCSOFT's history. CoH was simply too old to be saved (even after going F2P, DCUO and CO just killed it). TR and AA were shut down long before devs realized that you could save a dying sub game by switching to F2P.

With how fast revenue and profits are dropping, they might not even bother going f2p.

I'm willing to bet that if they switched to F2P and put stuff in the shop that people actually want to buy (as opposed to just forcing them to repeatedly pay for access to the server) that they'd see their profits double, or even triple, rather rapidly. But whatever, subs are clearly the best model for MMOs as ESO and WS continue to prove.

Agreed, I hope this is still present. I hardly ever enter the actual forums, unless I'm going to a game's specific forum, usually I just watch the latest posts feed.

If you could use your new system to decide who could participate in contests, that might be a decent use of requiring them to prove that they aren't just going to come around for freebies and vanish.

That could be one positive of the system, but I doubt they'll do it that way. Low post counts don't bother me so much, especially if they've been signed up for a while, lurkers are still part of the community. But, I do hate seeing people that registered that day win contests. However, the staff here have always let it fly and I imagine they will continue to do so, even with a system that intentionally makes posters unequal.

And ironicly i can count the number of other players i have seen since i started playing on one hand....

Same goes for the number of PvP lobbies i have managed to get in to.

It is a good game... broken as all come *bleeeep* but still at it´s core a good game. It just needed about a year or so more in development.

PC or one of the consoles? I've read that the game has had quite a few session and PvP lobby problems on PC. It's not been near as bad on the PS4 at least. Like I said, January was somewhat of a ghost town but in the last couple of weeks my session is always full or almost full.

Maybe they should have left it in the oven for a little bit longer, but I think the future of the game is looking up at least. If nothing else it's a great foundation for a new street racing series.
