The Chinese FFXIV uses a completely different system to the global FFXIV and is handled by a different company altogether. There has been no indication that SE would include the Chinese numbers in these milestones. My point is that "global" in FFXIV terms is vague since there is the "global" version and the region-restricted version(s) which are separate.

Either way SE has used registered accounts throughout the game's lifespan (while praising the game's financial reception) and in SE's practices it can be seen that the game is doing more than OK. There is simply nothing to PR about in keeping the status quo. Post-Heavensward there might be more pressure for the subscriber base to grow though. It remains to be seen whether the increase in registered accounts translates to a higher sub base come Heavensward. I presume that this is what SE is counting on.

So .... you are saying that FFXIV ARR has sold - sold - 1.5M copies since the end of 2014 in countries, excluding, China?

And that Square Enix's press releases are vague?

And no SE has not just used registered accounts; we have had the 1M subscribers across 3 games for example.

I will stick with OK.

To be fair, those 1m figures are already a year old, so increases in player numbers is not unlikely, though some of the 'inflated' figures do lack credibility, until Square Enix releases their own financial report etc, i am not sure i would be prepared to believe they have even exceeded 2m without some kind of definitive proof, and from the source not from some third party that regularly makes guesses that lack hard data to support them.

Asymmetric 4v1 AAA RPG with character progression AND it is in the Fable universe AND it will be F2P /w everything can be gained through playing AND its MULTIPLATFORM!?!!?

WHAAAATTTAAA FUUUUUDGE!?

This is GROUND BREAKING!!!!

While the game is multi platform, so far its only implied that they might be able to play together, have not seen anything yet that actually stated outright that they will be able to do so. As for the 4 v 1 thing, it sounds very much like a lobby game, where any 'progression' is limited to each 'game' but have to wait and see on that one. It does look interesting though, and definitely need more information than is currently available, one to watch for sure.

My account was activated today. Think I will take a look. Figured to let everyone else know since I haven't seen the story here.

They have a financial report due at the end of march so they are trying to boost the numbers by activating all accounts, which makes the sub numbers look better than they actually are.

Its a 10 day subscription they gave you for free, as well as everyone else.

Cheap and rather desperate tactics to try boost numbers.

Take a few seconds and think through what you're saying.  You really think they're going to activate -every- account for this event then turn around and try to claim they have a 100% retention rate?  Particularly after they just announced reaching 4 million accounts they're going to turn around and try and say they have 4 million active subs?

People on this site care a lot about sub numbers; the investors don't give a damn about the sub numbers.  They care about profits.  Claiming vastly more subs than they have revenue to show for does nothing for their financials and it's rather silly that you think it would.

This. People on these forums think that investors are stupid as hell. Claiming to have all billion subs is all good but if you made 200m, then you clearly bullshiting people.

Giving lapsed players a few free days isn't going to affect a financial report in any way, unless those players then choose to resume their subscription, and even that might well be too late to appear on the financial report due in just a few weeks time, after all, the financial report is about revenue, not player numbers, and free players = 0 revenue, which basically means artificially padding out player numbers would have zero benefit to the company if they were trying to 'modify' their apparent finances, however, it might encourage players to resume their subs, which is more of a marketing strategy than anything else.

both good servers, hopefully he will be able to create a character on one of them, i think Odin is the most likely to be 'full' or Locked to new characters, its also my favourite server

Gonna point out Squares current strategy for sub numbers and financial reports to investors.

Financial report will be due at the end of March.

Square push out a major patch just before this time to maximize interest, not happy with this they also give out free subscriber time to anyone that wants it (expect lots of advertising pushing f2p).  The longest ever free "weekend" campaign just before a financial report is due when these free players will be classed as subscribers.

Given this I expect a lot more than I initially did, because if they can't pull really big numbers right after a major patch and with large numbers of free to play players then it will show the true state of things.

I'm more interested in seeing the financial report than I was before realizing Squares strategy now.  It's kinda funny how far they will go though, they can't lie to investors so they do things like this.

SE Right now

reactivating players accounts for free does not improve revenue, so would not be a positive aspect for a financial report, seems some people fail at basic math

Is this in line with the game Fable? Or something else?

I've only played Fable III, but i would imagine it is... must say i am intrigued by it, more information is definitely required though.

Would be even better if they put character names behind these letters.

It would, but, as some even go so far as to visit forums such as this with complaints such as, 'they banned me for no reason' etc. we also get to have a good laugh about it too

MMOs are dead, they are not evolving at all. SWG was the pinnacle. It's been down hill ever since.

MMO's represent a huge amount of money, how many billions of $ per year i have no idea, but that is what we're talking about, at the time of SWG, the market was relatively small, WoW changed things, it made MMO's popular, more mainstream instead of the province of what might be termed, 'gamer nerds' okay, it was a very niche market, SWG failed because instead of fixing what was broken, they tried to change things, badly, and by doing so they destroyed their own game, what might have been, really doesn't matter, but even so, SWG was not the pinnacle, it was just the beginning, if anything can be said, its that games are evolving faster, and the division between what is an MMO and what is just an Online game, is becoming 'blurred' its not just MMO's that are evolving, its games in general, of course in terms of evolution there will always be casualties, but the genre is definitely moving on regardless of them.

<3 FFXIV - just wish I had the time for a P2P MMO, I just wouldn't get my $15 worth.

With more and more MMOs coming to XB1, I'm still hopefully eventually they'll make a deal and we'll get FFXIV on XB1.

Maybe with the new Windows 10 + XB1 integration stuff they won't have a reason not to anymore.

About the only reason, as i understand things, that FFXIV;ARR isn't on XB1, is because Microsoft won't allow it, its worth bearing in mind that even on the PS3/4 FFXIV;ARR doesn't require PS+ (unless thats changed again recently!). Personally i think it would do wonders for the console community as a whole to have less segregation in games, take out the whole PS4 vs XB1 argument, and give console players a chance to play together without any antagonism, if FFXIV;ARR can be run on a  PS3 then there is no good reason it can't work on both the XBOX360 and XB1. Windows 10 is largely irrelevant in this particular argument tbh, its really about Microsoft in general.

Last I checked FFXIV has 2.5 million or more now.

You're wrong.

Actually, he's correct.

Prove it.

Registered accounts are not subscribers and square themselves have said 500k.

I know this is a fan board but still when you lie you set your fellow players up for massive dissapointment.

They are wrong but we don't know how many there are. SE released data but its a year old now and doesn't count China.

Thing is, in the last annual report, they had less than 1 million active subscribers, i sincerely doubt that in the last year, they have more than doubled their subscriber base, though by now i can easily accept they have over 1 million active subscribers, and i do say this as a long time player of the game, the game is successful, which in itself is impressive given the number of games that have 'failed' recently, but all this crazy talk about massive player numbers etc just comes across as desperate, not to mention bizarre, why do people constantly need to try and turn games into WoW beaters, everyone must know by now that its just not going to happen.

Eve has about 1 Million Subs.  FFXIV has over 2 Million Subs and is nearing 3 Million subs.  No other game in the last 8+ year has keep and gain subs past the 3 month mark.  FFXIV is a fine game and is one of the best MMOs on the market right now.

No one disagrees with FF being a fine game.

The 2 mil subs are completely made up though.

last i heard, Eve had between 350,000 and 500,000 subs, i'd surely remember if they'd said at any time that they had 1 million, as for FFXIV, while they had said they had over 1 million, i don't think they have claimed over 2 million, but if i am wrong then please link that statement, pretty sure its never been made though

I'm getting the impression you don't actually design your character. You use an archtype, like the Knight.

So every Knight looks the same? Has the same race, gender, appearance?

Character design/creation is an essential element in an RPG. I think being unable to design how my character looks is a deal breaker for me in an MMORPG...

in a word, yes.

They will really have to give players a lot of choices when it comes to outfits/armour, otherwise players are going to be 'lost in the crowd'

Ff14 has very low player numbers, wow has no threats on the market and least of all ffxiv.  Ffxiv isnt even in the same league.

Its great you enjoy it but dont confuse personal bias with it actually being something anywhere near wow, you just look silly.

While FFXIV;ARR might have nowhere near WoW's numbers, they are far from being 'low' unless of course you think over a million is 'low' in which case you might be both weird and right

Do agree though that the WoW comparisons do make them look a bit silly, no matter how good FFXIV;ARR is, i don't think we'll ever be seeing over 5 million, i am not even sure the game will even hit 2 million anytime soon, if ever. Not that any game having over 1 million players should be considered as being anything other than a success imo

Also B2P+cash shop is not B2P.     It is freemium with upfront cost.

Its like, what is the difference between B2P + Cash Shop/Microtransactions and  F2P Cash Shop/Microtransaction game with a box price..

Answer = 0

Which basically means you take away a F2P games Box Price, the only difference is that the B2P + Cash Shop game has more up front charges.

They're a Chinese company.

This was a company I used to consider trustworthy. Now they're on the same par as Packard Bell.

I do remove bloatware but if I buy a laptop from a reputable company then I don't do a complete nuke-n-pave. This is why I generally don't buy laptops from retailers that put their own crapware on the system.

Now I'm left wondering if there is a laptop company I can trust at all. In the past couple of years I've bought ASUS laptops and haven't had to remove much crapware if any at all. I've been thinking of buying an ASUS ROG portable desktop, but now I'm a little apprehensive. I certainly don't trust Dell or HP and I absolutely don't want to build a system. This sucks.

Tend to agree, who in their right mind is going to buy a laptop now if they can't be sure its 'clean'. I'll stick to my desktop, built it myself and i know its clean, i do a complete scan every week to be sure. Seriously though, its crap like that, that hurts the PC industry in general.

Yeah, it sucks. One of my guildies got his account hacked twice as well.

The real problem is that they use the mail adress as account name and that the standard online mail servers now are easy to hack. If you use the same password for the game as your mail it is pretty easy to get hacked.

With the original GW they solved this by adding that you had to write down the name of a character to log in.

Myself, I use an old Pop 3 mail account which I only use for GW2 (yeah, people call me paranoid but at least have I never gotten hacked).

I hope things work out for you, good luck. :)

I think these days its pretty much a requirement that an Online game has to have an authenticator/token key generator tied to it, just relying on passwords is barely sufficient, throw in a tendency to use email addresses as your login name, and games are more susceptible to hacking than ever before

idk how they did it, but ESO players don't need one. I don't know anyone who has been hacked in ESO.

Which really doesn't mean that it hasn't happened, and frequently, its not as if the games themselves have been hacked after all, but the players have been instead, through their email, or whatever, all an authenticator does, is provide an extra level of security for the players, which is where its needed more often than not.

do a quick google search. Type "eso account hacked" You'll find like 5 threads from april of last year. Then do a search "gw2 hacked accounts" you'll find 20 pages of threads. All I'm saying is some companies handle account security much better than others.

Sorry for the derail OP, but hopefully it will get you some more views.

Again, its not the games that were hacked, and the companies involved were not party to the players getting hacked, if anything, the increase in incidences reported is in all probability related to the disparity in terms of player numbers for the games being compared, WoW for example, probably has the most reported incidences, which is no doubt due to the size of the games player base.

Marvel Heroes would probably be a better game, if they just allowed you to create your own Hero, its the one thing that is missing from the game that prevents players actually feeling that attached to the Heroes they own, instead, players go from one hero to the next, rinse and repeat, and not finding that one thing that they can really call their own.

Fail. There is documentation from some of the Devs that exposed some of the inner workings that skew how a player is assigned to a team and the quality of that team... something WG denied for years. MM is broken enough without these added hidden algorithms that look at player performance.

Is there also links to this documentation? Proof that this documentation comes from legitimate (developer) sources?

Yeah, with that sort of an accusation, link it or it never happened.
