Although I do like and read PCGamer, their MMO reviews tend to be way off.   I'd really trust them for single player games and not MMOs.

You are aware that PCGamer are heavily in to MMO's right, and that they have guilds etc, in most games, from WoW, to Eve to even Planetside 2.

If your trying to intimate they don't do MMO's then you could not be more wrong, they even have a Minecraft server, their also heavily into Dayz, and since PCGaming these days increasingly is MMO's they tend to cover them pretty well

Oh and here is something to chew on if you're doubting the 500k active players logging in:

Some hard data has been given about the game’s population as well. The game has 1,080,000 total unique logins (IE: unique players) since its release, 617,000 daily unique logins, and 344,000 peak concurrent users (IE: users connected at the same time).

Taken from this article in Sept 2013

In Sept - yes.

I am doubting those figure for April of 2014 - as in this month - I don't think that the game had 500K unique users during any day in April.

The Steam version was released February 14, they just added another content patch on March 21 and the PS4 version launched April 14 (the open beta was before that). So why couldn't it reach that amount?

Indeed with the new patch and release of ps4 version there is easily 100k more people playing the game. After all they went from 1.8 mil. to 2 mil thanks to the ps4 sales.

And in the fine tradition that SE started with FF XI, the PS4 & PS3 players are on the same servers are the PC players, no discrimination, this is a game that would have helped the XB1, sadly for Microsoft, it probably never will be

Its totally believable that the game currently has over 2m players, the PS4 version has after all only just recently released, and in MMO terms its probably the best game on the PS4 currently, the only question is retention, though i have no reason to believe it won't continue to grow, it may even be 3m+ by christmas

No.

Hell NO.

I spit my drink over my keyboard when I saw this topic then saw ESO as the subforum.

I don't know what year i started playing EQ1, but it was a hell of a long time ago, but i don't see how the guy managed to fit the 2 games in the same sentence let alone say it is the spiritual successor to EQ1,

i'll go with the 'Hell no' answer... expletives deleted

If DX12 is really going to be Win8/9 only, then it really only adds ammunition to OpenGL, and in a way, to linux, you only have to look at the figures, currently, win 7 has almost 50 percent of the worlds PC user base, 28 percent are using XP,  Vista and 8 are around 5 or 6 percent each, if Win 7 does not get DX12, then no developer will ever code a game to support DX12, simple as that, another simple fact is that if Win 9 at all resembles Win 8 with its ridiculous Metro interface boot screen, then it will fail even harder than Win 8 did, all Linux has to do, is improve its userbase beyond that of Win 8 - and it suddenly becomes a viable platform, but here is the rub, its not so much that Win 8 etc wasn't a hit with people who use Windows OS's (it wasnt!) but it is also turning developers away, or at least making them consider being a bit more inclusive when it comes to supporting different gaming platforms, that Steam is increasingly supporting Linux is also something that is gaining more recognition, and Linux is no longer the 'difficult' OS to use, its far more user friendly now, and i can see it becoming even more so now that interest in it as a 'real' OS is becoming more of a 'reality'. The gaming industry is beginning to accept Linux more and more, and the fact they don't have to pay MS anything for the priviledge must be a consideration, while it may not have hit critical mass yet, the time is coming when you will see 3 OS's supported by MMO's  Windows, Mac, and Linux. well you might see them drop Mac support

Game retail outlets i doubt you'll get any decent deals for awhile .. online cd key sites however, thats another thing. Can get the game much cheaper that way. As long as you don't want the disc etc anyway.

I generally use Kinguin, tho the amount of sites is mind boggling, especially if you want to search for a key and it's not on the major sites.

you can get the box for under £30, play.com currently has the box with the explorers map for that price, and the 60 day gametime thing  you can also get for just under £18.

http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/31958527/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online/Product.html?searchstring=elder+scrolls+online&searchsource=0&searchtype=allproducts&urlrefer=search

tbh, if your going to wait, then may as well wait a month for the prices to drop further. the other thing is the shipping, they ship the boxes from the US to the UK, which although free, still takes up to 2 weeks apparently.. i think most people would prefer the cd keys, unless they feel that the boxed version is a must have item

For guys trying out figure out the numbers....

49% of the comments roughly are 'negative', being either no way, not worth the sub, didnt buy it, or waiting for it to go F2P, or regret buying it.  So that takes almost half the votes away. As of right now that a less than 600.

But if you want a break down as of this posting

342 claim theyre resubbing

103 are going to give it another month

94 already re-subbed.

So that is 539 people out of (approximately) 616 (who bought the game)who claim theyre going to pay at least a month of subs. Thats 87.5%. Which is very unlikely. I would say that in reality the results are going to be almost opposite of that.

But if a lot of people DO re sub then while the numbers arent great overall theyre going to continue to retain those hard core people who love the game no matter how bad it is. Which is a main goal of most companies at first but generally as the numbers dwindle they make the expected changes.

The numbers currently seem to be broadly in line with general retention rates of most MMO's, around 30%, its only an indicator though rather than a definitive answer, until Zenimax actually put some figures out there everything is, and can only be, guesswork. But they don't look good either way.

I will be honest even if it makes me look stupid.  I thought PC Gamer had been reviewed out of existence long ago.  I am being serious.  I didn't even know they still existed.  Oh well....

PCGamer is the top gaming magazine in the UK, at least for PC's, up there with Xbox magazine etc for consoles, they have a seperate team for the US, but afaik they are pretty much the same there too, as far as gaming magazines go, their pretty huge, and reputably, unbiased.  Their review of ESO wasn't horribad by any means, its just that the game is a bit marmite.

Haven't they been working on this title for over 5 years now?  How were they not closer to some kind of beta testing?  I'm curious what the decision behind this is.  Is CCP losing money overall?  Do they feel the game isn't marketable in the highly over-saturated MMO market?  Regardless, it's sad news.  The industry needs more variety.

Dust 514 flopped pretty bad and I guess they didn't want to risk their company by making a huge investment on a risky sandbox and decided to cut their losses instead.

Dust 514 failed before it even began tbh, even within Eve itself nobody really cares about it, for the most part i wouldn't be surprised if most have even forgotten it exists, whether it would have been saved if the game was PC as well as PS3 is debatable, maybe it would have drawn in more people, but it was a bit 'titanfailesque' too few players in too small an area, with other shooters already providing a superior experience. But WoD was something we all wanted, that its no longer being developed is a travesty, i can only hope at some point in the future, that CCP are able to continue the development again. i can only hope.

In the face of Zeni's continued lack of sub/sales number bragging, I'm somewhat surprised by the apparent optimism of many -- how can you not see that as a very, very distressing sign?

OTOH, at this point I'm not entirely sure whether to chalk that up to sub-1 mil sales, possibly (probably?) very sub -- which would be more than a tad bit of an embarrassment, not to mention a distressing sign of things to come -- or put it down to Zeni clearly being so far out of their depth they couldn't find the surface without The Hubble and military-grade GPS.

Personally I'd like to see the game do well, new MMOs crashing and burning is getting old (not that most haven't deserved their fate, mind), but honestly I don't see how any fan of the game could not be worried -- very -- at this point.

I think they will release some numbers after the first sub day starts.   Worse thing for a company to do is to release its numbers before the actual subs start.     They cant really claim anything at the moment until they have solid sub numbers and not just purchases.

That doesn't really make any sense, as box sales/digital sales will be much higher than subscription numbers, so it would be more positive to announce sales numbers than how many were left after the first month was up. That they haven't says far more about how well the game is doing than otherwise, i would be very surprised if they did announce actual subscriber numbers after the first month, instead i expect they will post sales numbers, in the meantime i wouldn't mind betting that their hoping that the next few weeks will see a rise in sales, enough so that they will finally be able to announce something positive, of course, the longer this takes the worse the perception of the game will be, bit of a PR nightmare either way.

EQ2 has five times the content, gameplay elements and potential for time investment and fun than WOW does. They really, really turned it around from 2008 until it's current state. One thing they never bothered to fix or improve was the horrible 3D Engine, which is KIND OF A BIG DEAL.

EQ2 is sadly lacking in those qualities, sure the graphics are dated, but the game engine isn't all that good either, the game has so much instancing due to the game being unable to support all that many people in a zone at the same time, that it also really hurts gameplay. EQ1 had, for its time at least, a massive following, but they didn't move onto EQ2, for good reason, EQ2 lacked the gameplay elements of EQ1, and that at the time was a huge thing, so much so that SOE tried 'redefining' the game several times since, but all thats happened is that the game now lacks any real identity of its own. F2P didn't actually help either. Vanguard was better than EQ2, from the game world itself, to the character classes you could choose in that sense alone it was more of a successor to EQ1 than EQ2 was, if the game had actually been finished properly i doubt EQ2 would even still be running. Content wise though, i don't see how you can say that EQ2 has more of it than WoW, after playing both games (and EQ1 for a very long time!) WoW just has so much more to it, it is the better game, imo at least and probably in the eyes of millions of others if even half of things Blizzard has managed to put into WoW is anything to go by, which for many, it probably is.

Bought it. Subbed.  Couldn't play it. Got no help from Customer Services.  Cancelled Sub.  Took box back to store. Got refund. Spent money on beer.  Went back to playing other MMOs.

If ever there comes a time where I can casually scan the official forum and not see thousands and thousands of posts about bugged quests, disappearing loot, falling through the landscape, endless death cycles, botters, boss camping, endless loading screens, "unknown error", high latency, pvp loading screens stuck infinitely, disappearing skill points / inventory / bank, characters being deleted, progress being reverted, lack of customer service support, slow download times, phasing and so on.  Then I "might" buy it again.

But it will probably be free by then and Archeage will be out...so likely not.

with that list of negatives i'd forget about Archeage if i were you, as your really only going to be disappointed, if the game only suffers half of the problems ESO has then you'll be lucky, chances are it may even be more and thats before you move on to the games other glaring none bug type issues. Have a good look at all the other MMO's because Archeage really is amongst the least of them.

Wouldn't it just be easier for you to NOT go on forums, where you are exposed to things that makes you emotionally upset?

I really don't get people getting upset about others not liking their game. If it's well populated, has a community you like and it's getting updated enough, why do people even care so much?

Sometimes i think players just invest too much emotionaly to these mmos, and financialy later on, and then have to defend it from any form of criticism, viable or trollish, to make it feel like it was worth it.

One of the worst mistakes anyone can make is to get attached on a game in a way that any negative criticism towards that game feels like a personal attack.

There are plenty of those every launch though...

True enough, and while nobody likes their game to have a bad launch, things just sometimes go wrong, take the latest one to 'hit the fan' if the overly emotionally attached players take it too personally when other players complain about issues with the game, then their just going to over stress themselves for no good reason, no doubt the game will be fixed eventually and the complaints will die down, and until then just need to chill out and accept, when the road is rocky, there will be people complaining about the bumps, at least until they fix all the pot holes

Ouch.  Regardless of any defender's opinion, Zeni realllllllly needs to get it together.  They are upsetting a lot of folks, and having so much DT this far into release, and on a Saturday no less, not a good move.  Some things can't be helped, sure, but this is just very bad publicity, it's excessive and a lot of customers are becoming rapidly more agitated.  It has already been acknowledged (by many) as one of the rockier MMO releases at this point.

they are fixing the game is this a big deal?????\

god what happend to gamers

They dislike being treated so shabbily for a product they paid quite a bit for, particularly those who bought the CE, but the real question is, why do you think their not entitled to complain ?

Have to say though, why is there such a disparity between the EU and the NA servers, it really doesn't make any sense.

If they had 2 million or more, they'd have announced it so far. My big concern regarding population is the apparent low interest in pvp. As discussed in other threads, the fact that only a small few are full is indicative of either really low population or really low interest in it.

Perhaps people are waiting till 50, but GW2 had tons of queues from launch. Makes me wonder if they even have 1 million sales.

I also doubt that we have 2 million players playing right now.

if they were able to announce that they had 1 million players then that would be a huge positive, personally, i doubt they have even 750,000 and probably barely 500,000. This could be for several reasons though, the launch has been problematic, particularly for players in NA, many might well be holding off registering their game keys until the game has stabilised, others might well be holding off on buying the game yet for the very same reasons, i am not sure that the pricing model used is that much of a drag on the game, nor the fact that its P2P, though that may well be an issue when its released on consoles, and may well be a huge contributing factor as to why console pre-orders were so low.
The next few weeks should be interesting, particularly if Zenimax continue to remain silent on the issue.

MODS feel free to lock thread , question answered.

you took a gamble then, and you were lucky, it doesn't mean anything because Zenimax have admitted there is an issue and that their working on it, undoubtedly they will fix it, but for those not willing to take the gamble that it will work, waiting for Zenimax to give the all clear is probably the safer option, im sure once they have resolved the issue they will post that they have done so.

I hate to be one of those people, but I'm waiting for this.  The game simply isn't worth $15 a month to me, month in, month out.  I spent around $50, and got less than two months out of it, and was done.  That doesn't mean it's a bad game, it isn't.  It just isn't the type of game I'm personally going to pay a monthly sub for.

You'll be waiting an extremely long time

In 5 years time he will probably still be waiting and hoping, some games just don't go F2P, and SE are in no need to do so, the game is profitable enough that adding millions of freepers probably wouldn't actually help, and oddly enough, they seem to care about their current customer base rather than some unquantifiable demographic that may or may not exist, and lets face it the freepers don't stay with a game, they flit depending on which game is flavour of the month/week, whatever, does any game really need them?

Since the servers are down I will start off with some BOLD predictions about the game's future.  In a former life I was Nostradamus, so use caution when you try convince everyone that I am wrong.

1.  This game will go free to play....... NEVER!!!!

That's right, I said it.  It is NEEEEVER going free to play.  It currently has a ginormous subscriber base (1-2 million at least) and the game wont lose enough of that subscriber base to warrant the free to play move.  Also, going free to play will devalue the brand long term.  So all you fence sitters waiting for that fateful day when the game no longer costs a monthly fee can move along.  It will never happen.

2.   ZeniMax/Bethesda will get their act together and deliver on providing a smooth, glich-free, stable server with relatively few bugs left by the end of April BEFORE they try to add more content and completely bork the server!!!

I am SUPREEEMELY confident that this will happen.  Well, maybe not supremely.  I am sublimely confident this will happen.  Perhaps I am just subliminally confident about this.  Ok, maybe it is just hope, but I am predicting it!

3.  Player and guild housing will be added by the end of the year!

Why wouldn't they do it, right?

I will limit myself to only those three predictions at the moment.  Channeling my inner Nostradamus is a bit taxing.

lol wow. Where did you get those sub numbers from???

more wishful thinking im guessing, that Zenimax hasn't disclosed any numbers themselves kind of indicates the overall figures aren't all that encouraging, as now is the time they should be advertising their successes, if they had them.

HeroEngine doesn't come with the ability to do housing...  so that one's wrong.

The Repopulaton would like a word.. IF a studio with as little funding as that can get it in why couldn't a studio like zenimax? Unless of course they don't want to.

Until the Repopulation actually does those things, its just speculation and wishful thinking, and does not in any way support your argument to the contrary.

http://hewiki.heroengine.com/wiki/Player_Housing_Tutorial that is called google and 2 minutes with it.

Until there's even a working alpha it is just wishful thinking, and no amount of 'bigging up' the hero engine is going to change that, until we see an actual working version. and there isn't one.

Such a negative nancy. The Devs promised housing. Devs like these never lie they will surely deliver and Repopulation will be the best western MMO for a long time come. Just let it happen. Repopulation will be the next coming and I for one can't wait.

I thought that SOE's "New Home For SWG Players" was the next coming.....this is MMORPG forums right?

Myths too now apparently, though SOE is more likely to produce something than the repopulation guys are, though both have yet to produce something significant to back up their 'promises', kind of wonder, is there any link between games developers and politicians

no wait, scratch that, bankers and politicians are a way lower form of life, games developers just have a problem delivering on them, not outright lying about them

Personally I hope the EU megaserver moves sooner than later to EU. The unresponsiveness and periodical lag spike is beginning to grind my nerves.

Zenimax are probably playing it safe, once the game has enough players on the EU server, and it looks like their going to stay, they will probably move it closer, be crazy not to tbh as the current situation will only annoy people further.
