Somehow i expected it to be more than just that, to be honest if that's truly what your limited to, could be that Star Citizen is not a game i would be interested in, too many predetermined 'pathways'  with 'scripted' events.

One of the things i like about Eve Online, and also about Elite;Dangerous, is that you choose your own path. What your basically saying is that SC is a Theme Park game, not a Sandbox one, personally i hope you have got it wrong.

In Star Citizen you will have BOTH.

Squadron 42 is a detailed and long (solo) story, with necessarily scripted events following the plotline (which is NOT linear, there are variants based on your choices and victories/defeats). With many detailed cutscenes, heavily using mocap,P-cap (=detailed facial expressions), voice acting and orchestral sounds.

Star Citizen Persistent Universe is your free-to-choose-Sandbox ... where you follow your own path, alongside other players. You just earned your citizenship by doing your tour of duty in the military (=SQ42) ... now ... the universe is yours to experience.

Have fun

If its in the nature of a tutorial that you have to complete before you can access the rest of the game, that i can accept... as long as it doesn't take too long

The fact is that Star Citizen is not an MMO (says so in the FAQ section of the official forum).

So maybe the developers "did get it".

Star Citizen is a multiplayer game, but not a MASSIVELY multiplayer game. It will consist of a single-player introduction campaign (to earn your citizenship via military service). Solo play. Most likely off-line solo play. 3-4 episodes of roughly 10 missions each. After the solo-campaign you leave the military and join the (online) Persistent Universe, where you meet other players. But not in 4000 player battles like in EVE but in instances of (at most) approx. 100 players.

oh puhleaze. Is "choose your own path" now the official euphemistic codephrase for "no story whatsoever" or "no purpose whatsoever" ?

I´m sure they´ll thow in some non voiced generic text window quests for you , then you can make up "your own story" and ship biowaste from A to B or C to D all day long, completely without "scripted story".

And then the whole absurd reference he makes to sandbox vs. themepark.

You know what shipping biowaste from A to B with or without "story" has zero to do with either themepark nor sandbox?

Good. Because Eve is the only sandbox MMO around in space, just so you know. NPC focused grinds where you can´t build anything or do player trading, instead doing fetch quests cargo runs are not even sandbox MMO, FYI. That´s GW2 in space, or worse.

I think having played Eve for the last 10 years or so, i'd know exactly the kind of game it is. And playing Elite since a friend introduced it to me on his new BBC..

when you mention games throwing in none voiced generic text window quests, that means to me that its not the main focus of the game, and just one of the things you can do in a game, but whenever you start throwing around things like 'voiced' quest givers, suddenly they become the main focus of the game, and isn't that exactly what happened with SW;TOR? as fun a game as it is, the game play in SW;TOR is finite, each class in the game has its own storyline, altogether, 8 of them, is SC going down that path, because in that direction there is only the Theme Park.
As for Elite;Dangerous, your given a ship, and a universe to fly it in, what you do, how you do it, is up to you, fairly sure neither Eve Online nor Elite Dangerous, has anything at all in common with GW2.

Speaking of which, doesn't GW2 have some voiced Storylines?

Any tips? (If you have any game in mind that has a really good coop mode, but does not fit into these categories, feel free to throw it in too).

We have played Crusader Kings II lately and we're having some pretty deep plotting there. I play CKII kinda like a RPG/Strategy hybrid - Paradox Interactive's games are not just strategy games usually. Having said that both CKII and Europa Universalis are from Paradox Interactive and you might not like CKII.

I absolutely recommend a game called "Spintires". In its own unique way it's one of a kind off-road-truck-lumber-mud-simulator-somewhere-in-Russia-wilderness. There are single player and 4-player co-op modes.

In a nutshell the goal is very simple: get logs from one side of the map to the other side of the map. Sounds simple, right? You can plan it all out but usually you will end up in a situation you didn't want to and have to figure out how to get forward.

There is so much to do apart from transporting logs, especially when playing it on hardcore mode because you will have to tow the other trucks, refuel them, repair them. You simply can't expect what will happen. You might damage your truck on the way or run out of fuel. And quite often you have to scout the terrain ahead with a jeep to find an optimal route especially when loaded up.

Overall it's a good game and worth checking it out. I think there is a demo available as well.

Spintyres, funny thing about that game, as its a recent development in just how weird things can get in game development.

roughly a minute or so in, but the story seems to be that the publisher has reputedly done a runner with the cash.. personally, i wouldn't recommend anyone buying that game until they had some kind of assurance that the game is even going to get finished

No mans sky won't be out in 2015 though, even the developers themselves don't know how their going to implement the game mechanics so kind of hard to see how its not at least 2+ years away from completion. The only game i see on that kind of extended list that looks possible for 2015, not to mention even on the PC anyway, that is worth looking into, is The Division.
Endless Legend perhaps, it has multiplayer apparently, never played it myself but there should be some youtube vids out there, it might be the kind of thing your looking for

And this is Trion's problem how?

If you have a Blizzard account or ANY game account tied to an email that doesn't exist - it's going to be the same issue.

I mean seriously - you're blaming Trion for this?

The only way to resolve account issues with emails that you have no access to is to have CS switch you to a new email after proving that it is really YOU who wants to do this, otherwise account theft would be trivial.

Email is one of the primary ways of verifying account ownership - if you lose access to it - you have lost access to your account.

Do you not understand this basic security principle?

This is a valid point, so much of your security is tied to your email address, that its something that should have been sorted out before the email account was closed, most MMO's i've played will even allow you to update your details, such as email addresses, without your having an active subscription. To recover from this your probably going to have to email the company your passport details etc, as you will definitely have to prove who you are, and tbh, it might not be a service that the company offers, in which case hopefully it will be a lesson learned, if an expensive one.

My favourite at the moment would probably be FFXIV;ARR, though its a tough call between that and Eve Online

To be fair, does the same thing. Yet here we are on a sight who lists 4 player coop games as MMOs.

yeh .. and even on this forum, people discuss Diablo, PoE, marvel heroes, and so on.

I take it you didn't get the memo that said that more than just MMO's are covered here then

Is the game 1 single server like eve?

The game does not use traditional type of servers, but a mega server, that spawns instances based on player numbers.

How is the pvp? ( what are the pros and cons of winning or losing?)

The PVP is just about fun, find the right guild to join if you intend to take part.

How is the crafting, is it meaningful at all?

For the short time i played it the crafting did seem to be meaningful, but this was at low level.

How is the population of the game, is it a ghost town or is there a lot of people?

Because of the mega server tech used, unless 'everyone' leaves, then it won't be a ghost town, as players log out etc. instances are reduced, and vice versa. In terms of PVP though, it depends on which campaigns you choose to play in, some are populated, you need to join a guild before choosing which campaign to join, you don't have to, but it will at least ensure there are others with you when you go into Cyrodiil.

OP, I find it funny that you complain about tab targeting completely destroying the point of self aiming FPS style combat. Dude, let me explain something to you real quick There isn't one FPS style game on the market that doesn't have cheaters using aimbots to gain an advantage and guess what, it's obscenely common practice now. Which is exactly why I'll never buy another FPS game so long as this continues. So do us all a favor and stop pretending like you know everything about game development because FPS games are the WORST when it comes to legitimate gameplay.

I'll still play FPS'ers but, much as i really enjoy playing Planetside 2, the game is rife with hackers, doesnt seem to matter how often you report them either, as fast as SOE gets rid of them, they come back again with new accounts by the look of it. Much as i like playing the game, when the hackers are about, i just have to log out and hope that the next time i try to play the game, their somewhere else.

Seems ZOS has removed the option to sub for six months. There are only one-month and 90-day options now.

Some are speculating that this means f2p or b2p is imminent.

What do you think it means?

Wouldn't be too surprising if that was the case. Unfortunately it seems that not many MMO's can subsist on the subscription payment model anymore. Which is a shame, in my opinion at least, since that's the payment model that I prefer.

Many gamers prefer sub option - but - cash shops bring in additional profits even in subscription based games.

Still my guess is this

ESO will go F2P for console launch with cash shop in less than 6 months - there is no other reason why they would cancel the 6 month sub option.

Can't really blame any business for trying to maximize profits - that's what businesses do.

This is so laughable I have to honestly wonder if you even read what you type.

Why in God's name would any MMO with over a MILLION SUBS be going FTP? LOL

Heres a reality check for you. FF14 is on console, its not FTP and it never will with over 2 MILLION subs, and it just got even more going to console.

ESO is going the exact same way. This FTP pipe dream is just that. A pipe dream.

The claim that ESO has million+ subs is derived entirely from math done by fans assuming that the superdata did not included box sales as revenue with no justification for this assumption other than it was easier to do that math that way.

If the superdata did include box sales under revenue (which is quite possible since it is actually revenue) the number of subscribers turns out to be much much less than one million.

That said I do agree with you that f2p is pipe dream, mostly more because ZOS is certainly going to want to cash in on console box sales.

There has never been any reliable information put out there that there is anything close to 1 million subbed players in ESO, the question really was whether there was more than 500k or less, which given some of the issues and changes to how the campaigns work etc. would indicate that perhaps the numbers might be less than 500k. Superdata's data has only been speculative in nature, as Zenimax has not released any hard data, the only data they released was pre-launch based on numbers that signed up for the beta, not even active beta participants.

In a way it reminds me of what happened with SW;TOR, that they are about to switch to a Hybrid P2P/F2P model is definitely a possibility, which may well be timed to coincide with the launch of the game on Console.

In my experience, Nvidia tend to be easier to install/use, don't know which is the most powerful, or reliable for that matter, just that in my own experience Nvidia have been a better option, the one time i did buy an ATI card i had a really bad experience with the thing, they've probably improved in the last 5 or 6 years though, overall its just down to personal preferences, as each has its own pro's and con's.

Glad I'm giving all this alpha/beta crap a pass... wake me up when EQN is ready to ship. I'lll check it out for sure then.

Not a bad idea, might even be a Christmas present to look forward to in 2017

Plenty of other games to play if you need a twitch-fix.

Or perhaps there should actually be a game designed around said skill?  Not every game has to be catered to you or other's disabilities, this isn't real life and you accessing something out of necessity.  "Twitch kiddies" lol, what a condescending douche.

What's next?  You going to tell the NFL that they need to make the game and field wheelchair accessable to allow for handicapped players?  Or perhaps you want the Olympic swimmers to tie one arm behind their back to allow a one-armed individual to 'have a chance.'

Either you're good enough to compete or you're not.  Playing against players is either reaction time or strategy, sometimes both.  This is an example that reaction could win you the day and not simply because the other person is a walking shiny object fortress.

That they polled their prospective players to sound out either option is a good sign, i am not surprised that tab targetting was the preferred option, for most MMO players its probably the most familiar, tbh though, aimed combat only really belongs in games like Planetside 2, MMOFPS's, i don't think Repop is aiming to narrow the games focus to just that type of gameplay, surely that in itself more than justifies their decision to go with tab targetting?

There is no harm in believing psychological horror movies are same as romantic comedies, just don't expect anyone to believe your bs.

Except, isn't that what Twilight films are, some crazy mish mash of survival horror and a romcom..?  i've never watched any of them, but my understanding is that it has vampires and werewolves in it, which last time i watched one of those types of films, Kate Beckinsale was doing an awesome job as a Vampire that got a bit too chummy with a Werewolf, lots of action, of the sword and gun  variety too

So what he's saying is, even though action style combat has failed in every MMORPG to date, the EQnext team refuses to acknowledge this and will charge ahead into the abyss. Okay, I guess.

What games have failed and how do you determine that?

NW, Tera, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, insert decent number of upcoming games... While we are talking MMORPGs, the number of "successful" action games is pretty long in other genres. I see no reason a company couldn't pull it off in this one.

You not liking it =/= fail.

SOE seems fully aware of the shortcomings of these games and has said as much. Doesn't mean you throw out a potentially great design because either other companies did it a certain way or missing elements weren't available.

Not saying EQN will have mind blowing, everyone loves it, action combat, but they aren't carbon copying previous games and have a few tricks up their sleeves that others didn't have.

The current version isn't too far off from other games and as he said, is just the bones. Which makes sense as previous games were fairly lacking for me, good idea, not the best execution. Now if they don't follow through and the AI is meh and combat doesn't get a lot of polish, I'll have the pitchfork ready, but that time hasn't come yet.

So your defense of EQnext using action combat are those games? NW (empty), Tera (empty), Wildstart (empty),  GW2 (empty), and ESO. ESO is the only game you listed that is doing half way okay and even that is completely underperforming when you take into consideration the Elder Scrolls franchise and how many fans they have to start with.

If your best defense are the games you listed, you should probably take a step back from your EQnext fetish and reevaluate why you are being so positive about it.

The landmark servers are empty. No one plays the game. Its a paid alpha/beta and still no one  who paid bothers logging in. People clearly are not enjoying it. The combat is just one more thing to throw on the pile of terrible that is being shoved down everyone's throat as Everquest. I actually received an email from SOE yesterday listing reasons why I should come back and play landmark some more, a beta. When you have to start marketing the game to people who have already paid, your game is in trouble.

I think your being overly generous about ESO, but generally i think you pretty much nailed it

Landmark is no doubt being used as a 'testbed' for ideas for EQNext, i think its the games lack of popularity that is the reason why EQNext has been pushed back again, now they just need to try and find a combat system that players will enjoy, not easy if players aren't even logging in to try those features, no doubt they will try again after making more changes to the combat, in the hope that one of them does the trick. If that was Landmarks only issue though, it might even work, but i think before long their going to have to re-evaluate some of the basics, particularly the aesthetics. I think that, is also one of the major reasons why Wildstar failed as a game, cartoon graphics are just not fun any more, assuming they ever were that is, which i am not entirely certain they were, i think for the most part they have been 'tolerated' in games rather than 'liked'

I've been using just the basic Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. It's got enough buttons for all the really important stuff I need to do while flying, and works great.

I use this one also, i do have a few keys mapped to the joystick, but i've found it more effective to keep the manoeuvring thrusters assigned to the keyboard, there are 4 of them after all, plus another 3 that control velocity, i did assign boost to the joystick though, and while you can use the joysticks thrust lever to control velocity, i've found that using the keyboard keys is more precise, particularly if you have to change velocity in a hurry, which is almost always, not just in combat, but chasing down ores when mining, or just general picking up of random flotsam.

Ok I'll bite in hopes of actually saying or explaining this in a way that hasn't been done.  So to you a massive multiplayer game is WOW.  However WOT is not because in WOW you have thousands of players running around in 1 server.  Well actually lets say you do have 1k players on 1 server.  How many do you encounter at any given time?  Most of them are running around scattered.  You think because they are on the same server that puts them in the same room and category.  Yet in WOT they also have 1  thousand players all on 1 server.  Difference is they cannot encounter all of them in the same place at the same time.  And lets be honest here if 1k players all decided to show up in the same place in WOW then the servers would go down.  So your definition of a massive game actually has players spread out in their own little rooms enjoying the game.  Which is exactly what WOT does it puts them in their own little rooms.  Oh wait don't forget there's a lobby where you can encounter a few thousand players all at the same time in WOT.  So its a massive game they just don't put all the players together in the same place at the same time.  Just like WOW and every game in existence.  So if you really want to just argue for the sake of arguing you can define how many players it takes to be massive.  Which would mean that GW2 has massive pvp and ESO, EVE also have massive pvp but WOW has just pvp without the massive part.

Using WOT is perhaps not conducive to your argument as it contains too many contradictions that render your argument meaningless.

In the case of WoW you can in fact have several hundred players in the same place, and while battlegrounds deal with set numbers of players, it doesn't apply to the contested areas, where you can have hundreds of players fighting over them, oops, in case you didn't notice that means WoW does actually do massive PVP in a way that MOBA's and games like WOT is unable to cater to. Also, WoW is a persistent world, WOT is just a lobby game, as are 99.99999% of all MOBA's, while characters do have a degree of persistence, the world does not, as its just scenarios that are fought over, in that sense WOT has much in common to MOBA's like DOTA2 and LOL, there is no persistent world and its just about battlegrounds, which is why they are called MOBA's if in doubt perhaps its worth remembering what MO means in MOBA, and why they are not in fact, called MMOBA's

If at some point in the future these games acquire a persistent world feature, and, support more than a half dozen or so players in the same area at the same time, ideally to be called an MMO class game you should be able to play alongside at least 100 other players, as any horde player in WoW will tell you, it makes attacking Stormwind a hell of a lot more fun

So yeah, if MOBA's supported more players and had a persistent world, there might be something to the argument behind them qualifying as a MMO, unless of course, massively is somehow reduced to, more than 1 player, and persistent worlds relaxed to, battleground/arena that lasts for about 5 minutes. Probably not going to happen though
