I went out and bought the game today, loaded it, was very impressed with the manual and the graphics.  I knew it had a long in-game tutorial, so I will not pretend to be blindsided, but I will say that for the type of gamer I am, a linear in-game tutorial is a great annoyance, and this one in particular.

I am only level 5 or so in the game, but have not enjoyed any of it.  The combat is "spam the keys, always win", the NPC quest dialogue, that must be endured to advance in the tutorial, is not very fun, and the whole thing feels like it's on railroad tracks.  Now there may be a big free world after level 20, but I'm wondering whether I have the patience wait it out.

Also, I dislike character models that face at an oblique angle.  I'm used to shoulders, feet and face pointing forward.  Don't mind the 45 degree stance in combat, but in normal movement it's distracting and annoying.  And the character being whipped around to face attackers even though you want to face the other direction is an annoyance as well.  Thought that stuff died with EQ2.

But anyway, my main question to the devs is why design something into the game that is not enjoyed?  Noobs are not so incompetent as to require 20 levels of tutorial, and experienced gamers are not so patient as to want to bother with that, especially if it's a linear design.

Why would you design such a big negative into what could be a better game?  Surely someone in your company opposed going this route.

Your overly lengthy, linear tutorial will drive some players away.  It will.  Your tutorial is a barrier to enjoyable gameplay.  If you want to write scripts, then maybe a career in Hollywood would be preferable to one in game design.

There are better ways to educate new players on how the game plays.

(Also, for those of you who say I should not judge a game until I'm past level 20 or something, I say that a game should grab a player within the first few levels.  The first impression is most important.)

If you dont like the this type of game with a rich storyline and just want to level, and level, and level go play some asian MMO! And give me your CD Key!!!

Tabula Rasa and Age of Conan. Two good games that try to be diferent from the rest of the cattle that is the MMO genre in this days. But Age of Conan has a better "End Game" with BattleKeeps and players Cities. When TR finnaly has a similar thing it will be perfect, but that could be too late...the major flaw in TR was the lack of end game.

I sincerely dont know what to think of AOC! Never Isaw so much Hype about a MMO! One million beta players, more than 700.000 pre-orders (including me), amazing hype...

But for a guy like me who didnt played the beta im still puzzled why I have this feeling to buy this game. I always, ALWAYS, try to know alot about the game I want to buy. From this game I only know the amazing graphics the sweet combat mode and the delicious Guilds vs Guilds options, and of course...CONAN! But what about the rest? The quests and missions? Are they good and immersive or shallow like the type "kill-everything-in-sight-and-mission-complete" or the spooky "Kill-X-Rats"?

And raids, what part will they take in AOC? What is the maximum players in one squad?  So many questions...I sincerely hope I dont go against a concrete wall and this game sucks big time, that only have eye candy graphics!!

I understand that tired old quest mechanic, but really what else could they do? What kind of quests would you like to see? I hope and think that their will be standard quests like you describe, but their will also be story driven/cinematic story arcs for alot of the quests as well. Since the dawn of MMO's their has always been go here and kill this, deliver this, and exploration quests. They do this so you see all of the content they have created.

I think if you just take your time while playing and dont worry about being the highest level/best geared on the server you will enjoy yourself. This is going to be a new journey for all of us and we wont have a wiki or a 1-80 in 2 days guide availabe.

I personally am going to have notepad up on my 2nd monitor to keep track of everything I have done and how I did it in hopes of writing a leveling guide and/or contributing to one.

I have the hope that the quests will be diferent! Conan books AND comics make a good inspiration to make a damn good quests for this MMO! I hope that they dont screw this up!

Do you ever read comics and books of Conan? They are simply amazing! The Dark Horse saga are very good!!

I seriously doubt there are 700k preorders.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0OAu09STn4 for raid info

According to Funcom there are more than 600k, which was the cap for early access.

I told you so!

Anyone else feel like me?

Not I.

The game is going to be fun in the first few weeks.  Launches today are playable, games are more stable that even a few years ago... what has happened is we have become spoiled little brats.  Might it become boring? Yep.  Might it become better?  Sure.  But I will have fun BECAUSE it is new.  Later I might stay around or I might leave.  I come and go from games all the time.

I have never understood the male mentality of "I play this and only this game!"

Or "This game rocks and all others are worthless!"

I will play tConan and if I find I am not having fun, I will stop.  I will also play City of Heroes and Pirates of the Burning Sea, maybe try my hand at Eve and anything else I feel like it that day, that week, that month.

I just don't get why there has to be an enforced division between your hobbies.  I am a runner but I never think "I am never going to run a 5K or 10K while I train for a half marathon."  That is rediculous.  So is most of your anal aversion to any game that you are not currently fanning for.

... weirdos

Im in Love with this girl!...I couldnt agree more! I was not impressed with this game, but recently with the new information, the PvP, the new style of combat , the 12 classes (12!), well... I just pre-ordered! I too play other MMO (Tabula Rasa, City of Heroes/City of Villains) ,and now I will try this one,  but I intend to return to them.

So I hope it never happens.

I hope that you are joking!

I OWN the original series in double DVDs! The special edtion with the head of a Cylon! So you can say im a hardcore fan of the original series. But the new BSG...its simply amazing! The best sci fi serie ever. You need to open your eyes and step out of the 80s.
