I agree with the article, but not to the extent that many other posters do. I don't think that EA is going to "out-compete" other games or drive away the indies, if that were the case, Blizzard would have already taken care of that. EA is simply trying to be the next Blizzard, probably because it sees the incredible amount of money that company is still making on a 6 year old title. Here's where my concern is: I played WAR and was so horrified by the unfinished garbage that was delivered I swore that I would wait 3-6 months before playing any new releases, especially those released by EA. If memory serves, EA was counting on WAR to take off and make a shit-ton of money after its release. I'm not sure how much WAR cost, but it wasn't $150,000,000 Now, if you consider WAR to be a catastrophic failure to investors, try telling them that they only have 500K subs (I'm NOT saying that's all this game will get, this is just a hypothetical) and the company just pissed away more money than the GDP of a small nation- that will cause an investor- relations and Board of Directors nightmare which may lead to negatively affecting the industry as a whole. The best way to kill development of a genre is to have enough major flops that it makes all the big boys shy-away. Not that I don't love my Indie sandboxes, but sometimes I want to go to fucking Disney World. |

By that same token, if people DON'T support MO, does that mean the death of crappy unfinished games masquerading as "sandboxes"?

Are there any other MMORPG other than WoW, where the fanbase isnt majority WoW haters?

I think it was one of the first sentences on the OP that I stated WoW takes ideas from other games. So much WoW hate, I guess you skiped over that part, and when I repeated it later in the thread.
As zorn and others put it, Indie developers go after niche groups in the first place. The big names are listening to the Anti-WoW population that makes up their fanbase, which is why the big names dont do much better. ------------------ People didnt in fact enrage on the subject of WoW's travel times. Just look at Warhammer's forum during the early hype stages. Many of these people brung up WoW's Travel times whenever the subject was brought up on the tiered load screen zones. Even Guild Wars fanbase are agaisnt long travel times from WoW. You keep trying to argue against me, yet clearly you are pointed out what I am saying, but you are to blinded by WOW HATE to see that. WoW didnt invent much, it takes whats good and revampes it to fit their game. So of course you are going to see similar themes to Older MMORPGs. But with WoW haters dislike for things WoW has, you wont see these features anymore (WHICH AGAIN AS I POINTED OUT, MANY OF THESE IDEAS COME FROM OLDER GAMES) So when WoW hater promote this anti-WoW approuch on Developers, then basically new MMOs will skip out on those features. Only the Indie developers are left to tackle such things since their target is already niche grouped. Getting back to the original topic (strange idea, huh?) The communities in Fallen Earth and Ryzom are void of wow- haters. Many of the games that I got into, like WAR and AOC weren't full of WoW-haters- the guilds and clans that I was in generally accepted that Raiding Experience is Raiding experience. WoW gives several good lessons on how to be in a party/raid and how to use teamwork and strategy to take down a boss. The game where I expected WoW- hate the Most was LOTRO, and yet, there was little to be had. Perhaps, I just missed it, but its more likely that I add anybody who shouts insults in public channels to my ignore list- regardless of who they're hating on. For everybody else, GO BACK TO PEN AND PAPER! THAT"S WHERE THE HARDCORE SHIT IS! (I couldn't resist) |

The "Back in my day..." population
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/19/10 2:55:30 PM
It's pretty universal. We tend to forget the bad and only remember the good. I still have fond memories of classic RPGs and old video games. I keep forgetting that all games, not just RPGs and MMO's, were very "grindy". I think that all the advancements that have been made are a good thing. We keep forgetting that if we had to go back to UO Classic where you spent 1 week fishing so that you could have enough money to buy a sword only to have all of your shit taken from you by bands of PK's hanging outside of the starting town, that very few people would be playing these games. The fact is that all of the popularity has lead to innovation and variety of games. |

My year-plan of gaming - What you think?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/18/10 11:50:27 PM
Then give some classic games that you missed a spin: or
or you can download emulators and play some of the Classis NES, SNES, Gameboy, Genesis, Playsation, N64, PSX, MAME, etc on emulators. SNES9x and Nesticle are prestty awesome emulators and the games are easily found. I believe another poster recommended this. |

MMORPG isn't advertising Bob's Meth Lab or Even Glaxxo Smith Klein, they're advertising a service that many people use, whether you like it or not. And for that matter, these gold farmers that have 5, 10, 20, 50 accounts are giving the game companies more money than you are. Blame the damn game companies |

Why is MMORPG.COM allowing a gold buying site to advertise here?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/18/10 4:19:50 PM
I'm willing to bet that these sites pay per click-through. If you don't like the advertising, then make it ineffective by NOT CLICKING ON IT. The only reason why they advertise on this site is because it works. If there advertising no longer works, then they will stop advertising here. For that matter, every publication advertises pretty much who they want. When I worked for the NDIA, you would find articles that would be reviewing products by FLIR or Boeing -good and bad- while you would see ads for both those companies and their competitors. I don't approve of Gold Farming/Selling, but they only exist because a) People buy it and b) because devs do not address the problem enough. I firmly believe that they could stop gold selling or make it so expensive in loss of accounts and price of gold that they would become a very small problem MMORPG.COM: Make your money, sell your advertising to who you want. If I don't like it I won't click on it |

General Discussion « Mortal Online 3/16/10 3:03:24 PM
What will be the "end of sandbox MMO's" will be companies who keep releasing unfinished products. They want players to wait six or seven years for all of their promised features to be available? That's like waiting for classic WoW to just be releasing KT40 now! And MMO's, especially sandboxes, don't hinge on the success of this poorly release game. Fallen Earth is doing quite well, EVE is still picking up players and Ryzom has been resurrected, not to mention all of the other sandboxes that are in various stages of development. This guy's an ass. I will never buy a Star Vault product. |
