Pay2win? really? is this the first f2p game you people have ever played. 20$ is the max you need to spend to be able to compete with the top players. It's like crying that you can't compete in wow pvp with a trial account. Everytime I come to this site the forums are filled with insane exaggerations on how much you "need" to spend in w.e f2p game to be able to compete....

Got my invite also

Well I got a VIP code today and applied it..... except I still havn't been accepted. Getting slightly worried now.

Hopefully I will wake up in the morning and be able to play! O_o

I applied my VIP code today also, starting to think that it might have been too late to get into beta 6. Hopefully I'm wrong :)

Has anyone from the EU gotten an invite yet? 13+ hours till beta starts :/

"So yeh... I fail sometimes" made me lol

In a sandbox game we are given the tools to shape the world. In a themepark game we experience the world created by the developers.

haven & hearth is prob the only true sandbox game out right now.

my first mmo :) good times, best pvp system ever

"Adam Tuckwell is the “Safety Minister” and Head of PR at Jagex. He was proud to talk to me about Runescape's effort to make the game a safe environment for under children under the age of 13. Previously, players had to to be 13+ to play the game. Runescape launched the under 13 game in June. This provides a Quick Chat interface, and children under 13 can only see Quick Chat text from other players of the under 13 game. This game is Coppa compliant, and have been awarded Best in Class by the IWF (Internet Watch Foundation). Since the launch of the under 13 game, Jagex has seen a 40% increase in Runescape registrations.

In the Quarter 2 or 3 of 2009, the Parental Controls dashboard will be launched. This provides parents with the means to set how often and how long their children can play Runescape, set various chat settings and have various controls over their children's Friends List – such as the ability to add friends with or without parental approval.

Just as MUDs were the precursors to MMORPGs, Henrique described Runscape as a Junior MMORPG. A great training ground for other MMORPGs."

For those that think that this is not a childrens game, and that Runescape has not been making active changes to their game, to make it even more of a childrens game,  you should read this interview they gave at the E3 gaming convention.

I wasn't aware of a new genre " junior mmorpg" but Jagex has invented a new catagory for their beloved Runescape. It is a junior mmorpg, a training ground for REAL mmos.. for those that can't cut it in the real MMORPG gameplay. They do not even consider their own game a REAL MMORPG, but a JUNIOR MMORPG. LOL

Once they implement all their new kiddie features it will be a completely child safe game to attract all those 7 year olds that  are not coordinated enough to play halo!

exaggerate much?

yeah when you think about it - game has a lot of things to offer etc...

however... it wasnt really done right. also yeah... its a kiddy game. why? because you can be 6 y old and do as well as 40y old man. actually even better, because you have much more time as a kid :P

which makes playing this game not so rewarding. all you do is grind this, grind that... pvp/combat is horrible.

yeah well... atleast they made a very succesful game. now go and make a game that is really good, not just overhyped by kids xD

What game are you playing? Runescape is more complex then most mmo's out there all thoose kiddys you talking about are killing cows or chopping yews that's as far as they will ever get oh and try getting a 6 year old to do a hard members quest without a guide I wonder how sucesesfull he would be then.

I noticed that on the runescape website the amount of players online has fallen by erm 100k? o.O I remember a  year ago (or a few) at peak hours there was around 270k players online. In the last few weeks I have not seen it hit 200k number.... anyone care to explain why this sudden drop in player numbers?

The question is,

Why even play Runescape when there are better alternatives? The game has degraded to an extent that it wasn't the good old classic "stand out" game it was 5 years ago. It has degraded into a Junior MMORPG-WoW wannabee dumbed down MMORPG game. But of course, you MUST consider those who are living in 3rd world and newly industrialized country and those who are living on a tight budget. Without RS, what MMO game would THEY play?

When traveling across the vast emptiness of RuneScape please be aware the number of educated and articulate players with their moronic ramblings that you are bound to experience as demonstrated by these quotes:

" Yeh, so i was grinding with my homies then i finaly get 65def and im like AMg W00T!!!!111oneso i go to the Grand exchange to go buy some bandos armour and i type WTF so fast :o :o it was like wtf, wtf.It costed like 25m!!!!111 this is outrageous, pay for food pay for water pay for you're car pay for runescape pay for world of warcraft pay for sex now pay for armour?!?!?!?!?! I think jagex should give us armour for free.

Who is with me? :P"

"OK RIGHT SO I WAS IN THE PLACE WHERE YOU FIGHT REVS AND I NOTICED THAT REVS DONT DROP BONES BUT THEN IF YOU LOOK AT ONE FROM BEHIND, TEH OUTLINE OF BONES IS QUITE CLEARLY VISIBLE, I DEMAND YOU FIX THIS AND MAKE THEM MORE GHOST LIKE."

—Ski11 0wn4g3 in Rants

What better alternatives are you talking about? and how is runescape anything like wow?. Runescape community  is no where near as bad as people say sure starter f2p worlds are filled with immature kids but once you leave that area or better yet become member you will see that there's enough mature players around .

Requiem: Memento Mori, Alganon shortly after its release, SUN online.

Hehe, Alganon is getting so much hate so yeh its very possible they wont last long at all lol

WoW for sure.

Graphics look nice for my taste, getting sick of thoose insansly bright f2p games where your weapon is glowing with 15 diffrent colours. Gonna give this one a go.

I suppose EVE is a wow clone also ?

I'm in the same boat as you but i am very lucky and i have a world class games development training centre in my town

My plan is 2 years at this Special institute getting a diploma of games development (Programming) and a Business diploma at the same time (both courses only run 2 and a half days a week)

Once that is done i am going to my local Uni (i had a choice between a more theory or a more practical based Uni and i chose the latter) and doing a degree in software engineering (most likely specialising in games) and the 1st course knocks off a year from that degree.

While all that is done i am going to mod and help my friend make games in an effort to build our portfolios (and have fun of course) and above all try and gain as much experiance as i can.

As for you, Computer science is nice (and hard to get into) but realistically when it comes to games you want experiance and practical skills more than theory.

A lot of the courses have work placement options and I would also work on a side project while in university so practical skills should not be a problem. I'm just finding it hard to find the right course that would help me the most in becomming a game programmer.

I would first try to learn a little bit of programming on your own to make sure you enjoy programming and aren't just doing it in order to make games. You may actually enjoy designing game better than you like programming.

If you find you enjoy programming, go for a traditional Computer Science degree. A computer science degree will give you the opportunity to be a game programmer, or any other type of programmer. A game degree will only allow you to work on games.

You may find that you like programming but don't care for game development, or don't want to do it professionally. That's the boat I'm in. I do some basic game programming in my free time, but I probably won't do it professionally, just keep it as a hobby. Regular programming jobs pay more than equivalent game programming jobs because competition for game jobs is higher.

I know a tiny bit of python and wrote a few games like a guessing game, and I enjoyed it ^^ . I love games so I  think it would be a lot more intresting making games then software but I suppose it's better to leave my options open when I know so little about programming.

Basically  I have been a gamer for as long I can remember and I am very intrested in becomming a game programmer. I am doing my last year in school and will be going to University next year and was wondering what type of course would it be best to do Computer science or courses specialising in game development?

What would it take to make a browser mmo like Ikariam or Travian in terms of money, time, skill needed?
