i am thinking of coming back now, but i am afraid.

Did you really just say that?

You keep coming back to eve because it is a really cool game, but you don't have the metal for it.  Cancled your account because your BS got blown up?

I don't think I've ever posted something negative about someone, but common dude.

You and your friend can compete, you and your friend can even kill people.  You and your friend will die a lot.  And at first, you will die more than you will kill.  If you can't handle loosing your BS, then why were you flyin it?

I joined my corp on day 10 of the trial.

I don't think that you and this game are going to get along.  Have fun high sec mining.

1. are their any skills worth upgradeing to 5??

Yes, a lot of skills you need further down the road will require level 5 skills before them.  However, use the time it takes to train the skill as a guide.  If a skill is good and a low rank, it may only take it half a day to get to level 3, and maybe a day or 2 to level 4.  That is usualy worth it.  5, time is better spent in other areas now, although you may revisit it later as you fine tune your build and squeeze out that last drop of performance.

2.is there anyway to transfer isk between chars on the same account?? or do i need 2 for that??

You can transfer ISK to any character that is online or offline.  All  you have to do is get a link to their name and you are set.  Probably the best way for you to set this up, is under people and places (on the left) type in the character name with the character exact name search option.  Then right click on your character, double check that the portrait matches, and in that right click menu you can add them to your address book or send them ISK.

There is also a way with contracts, but you can't do that on a trial account, and it is more for giving a formal loan to someone.

3.when is the best time to get into a corp?

Now.  The thing about a corp is that you may not actually fly with them, hunt with them, or mine with them, but you sure can ask a bunch of questions and get guided help more so than you can from the Rookie Channel (which is still very good to be active in).  It also gives you the chance to be social with people while being online, which is very much a part of this game (if you choose for it to be).

Since you are focused on PvP, you should look at a corp that at least partakes in that.  Since you are just starting out, I would shy away from an all PvP corp as you may be interested in other aspects as well.  A well rounded corp (industry, mission running, ratting, pvp, trade) is best at the start.  In addition, you may find yourself interacting with the alliance more so than your corp.  A large alliance will give you another channel to discuss things with people, and even partake in small ops.

4.what are the most used weapons in the later game, missiles, turrets??

Well, you are minmatar.  If you look at your ships (the best to look at are your Battle Cruisers), you will find your answer.  Use the market window, look up your battle cruisers for Minmatar, and see what the bonuses that the ship provides are.  For example, Caldari ships provide either a bonus to Missiles or Hybrid Turrets.  So that would lead you to believe that most Caldari pilots will use either Hybrid Turrets or Missiles (specializing in one, and eventually branching out to the other).

Also keep in mind, you are not limited by your race, although starting out it is good to stay with your race (as the equipment and stuff you need will be more readily available in your racial high sec space).  As a caldari, I can still train up Minmatar ship skills and fly the same things you do.  I choose only to fly Minmatar frigates because I like their stats better, and caldar BC/BS because I like missiles.

You can do anything you want ; )

5. how long do you think it will take for me to get a battleship

To fly a BS, way less than a month.  To FLY a BS, months.  I would recommend if you are going the PvP route to do 2 things.  First make sure you can tackle in a frigate.  Then push into a cruiser or better a battle cruiser.  Then STAY in the BC or Cruiser for a month or so.  This gives you time to flesh out your skills.  If you jump into a BS to soon, my BC will mess you up, and I only have 4 months in game. (I can fly a BS but I can not FLY a BS yet, so I don't.  No need to waste all that ISK when my BC can do the job better ATM).

6. how long does it take to get to 10mil sp like the veterans?

Depends on Learning.  I have some learning skills, and some implants, but nothing special or out of the ordinary.  I train most skills at a little over 2,000 sp / hour.  So you start with just under 1m sp, and 9m sp at 2000 / hr would take you between 6 and 7 months.

Another thing to keep in mind, it does not take 10 mil SP to compete against a veteran.  For example, almost every SP I have has gone into skills to fly the Drake (A Caldari Battle Cruiser that uses missiles).  I can fully fit that thing with all Tech 2 equipement, most of my skills are for making my missiles hit harder and faster, or make my shields regen more or resist more.  I can beat a lot of pilots with 2x + the skill points as I do in duels with them flying BS and below, simply because they may have spread thier points to other areas (like BS, HAC, Covert Ops, Command, Leadership, ectra), where I have not.

While I am not as flexible as they are, I still hold my own and can contribute to group ops nicely.  Eventualy, I too will spread out my skill points.  But the key to remaining competitive to older players as a younger player, is to specialize in one area, one tree of skills.

7. what ship should i go for after the destroyer?

I skipped the destroyer (although later trained it level 1 to use as a salvage ship).  The next ships to get is cruiser, and then battle cruiser.  I then learned battle ship, just to level 3 so I can fly all my races BS.

From here things split.  You can head down a covert ops path, or a heavy assault path, or go up for battle ships.  Like the advice I gave above, spend some time in a Battle Cruiser first, and then you can not only specialize in the area you really want, but also actually FLY the ship you get into.

Also keep in mind, that training to fly a ship not only envolves the actual skill to pilot it, but also the skills to fit it.  Like a Caldari Raven (Battle Ship) is no good unless you can put some cruise missiles or torpedoes on it.

Took me a few days of frustration to figure this out, so just a heads up . . .

The wrecks that are solid triangles have loot, if it is an empty triangle there is no loot.

I know what you are saying.  I am waiting 8 more days for my T2 Heavy Launchers.  I do have some fuel for thought however.

The skill training system does
A) Slow down advancement, there for increase the longevity of the game.
B) Allow those without a lot of time to remain competitive with those who do.
C) Assists in making sure you halfway know what you are doing before you fly that new ship
D) Gives long time players an advantage over new players while allowing new players to use skill / new approches to overcome long term players. (Like it takes 2 days to bring a skill from 1 to 4, and 11 days to bring it from 4 to 5.  That 11 days gives you a 5% advantage in that stat over the 2 days, nothing real life skill can't overcome).
E) Frustrates the heck out of me, I WANT MY T2 LAUNCHERS!!!

You get placed in a rookie channel when your character is <30 days old.  Keep that channel up most of the time and read it as you play.  People will ask all sorts of questions in there and it is a great place to learn.  Once you start getting the hang of things you can start answering other people's questions and contribute back.

In addition, you start in a NPC corp. Fellow corp members are not your friends, but they can be used for information.  The general experience level of people talking in NPC corp chat is higher than those in the rookie channel, but they are less likely to answer rookie questions.

So, in rookie channel ask, "How do I do this?", in corp channel ask, "What is the best way to do this, or what is the best fit for that?"

In addition, the game has what is called the In Game Browser.  On the left you will see the globe icon to open it.

In the address bar paste the following address:
http://eve.grismar.net/wikka.php?wakka=WikiHome

Hit enter and click on the bookmarks tab and hit add bookmark.  This web site can be opened in game and lists a LOT of information.  Like if you just got to the point where you want to know what signature radius is, look it up in the Wiki.  Want to know what the best ore to mine?  Look it up in the Wiki.

From a social aspect, talking in local or rookie or corp chat really does help make the game more enjoyable, even if they are "borrowed friends".  I frequent a channel called "LVL 4", which was put together by people who routinely run level 4 missions.  It is nice to talk to people who are into / doing the same thing that you are.

My in game name is Madd Bomber, feel free to message me if you have any questions.

My thoughts are why are people so shocked someone spent that much? I wouldn't be surprised if its not even close to the max someones spent on a avatar for a MMo.  It can come down to a ratio of time spent playing verses time spent working.   If said buyer can earn 100k in the amount of time it would of taken him to achieve said pixels.  Then hes actually made money regardless if his bought characters been banned afterwards or not.

Stupid investment for a recreational activity? Sure..   But its not  a question of whether I or anyone else could/want to spend that much. It is more about how many MMO buyers out there actually value their time  far more than what we may think the bar is set at.

Buying a multi million dollar car only to have it wrecked by something uncontrollable to us is no different.    And has the same humor factor if not more so.

I agree.  Also the value of money can come into play here.  Just as a rough example. . .

I make 1k USD a week for a total income of 52k/yr and $143 a day.  Would you blink an eye if I bought the said character for 1 days income ($143)?  I wouldn't. Especially if all I was interested in is high level game or pvp.  If I view the journey up as a grind, then why play for a few months to get what I want out of the game, when I could just plop down 1 days income and deal with a learning curve?

A little less taboo is the way the game EVE Online deals with this.  You can buy/sell game time and characters for in game currency.  The development team has tools to support these in the form of authorized secure transactions.  It is a very well developed system.  A person in the game whose main character is a mission runner or miner may want a second account with a char who can haul (loot) lots of ore/loot and produce stuff with it.  It takes a while to develop a good hauling character (months).  So why not spend some in game currency to get the second account and save time?  You could even use the extra income you generate to pay for the second accounts monthly fees with in game currency.

It is all about what you want out of the game and how much your time is worth to you.

Now imagine if I made 70k / week, 3.6 mil/yr and 10k / day.  1 days work to skip months of grind.

One thing that really contributes to this is the way you can buy game time with ISK.  190 mil / month to have a miner/hauler/trader alt to salvage and loot wrecks while you are mission running may make sense.  Also think of a solo miner, they can make a lot more ISK if they have an alt hauling their ore back to station while they keep mining.  The difference may justify spending 190 mil in game money for that privilege.  And did eve mon just tell me the server is offline?  Its like 06:00 eve time. . .

There are actually several cases in the court right now against Second Life and the concept of virtual property.  Although I could not find a link, I do remember a guy winning a case against his ex girlfriend who deleted his characters in an online game.  In a civil court she was found guilty of destruction of personal property, although the damages were based off how long he had the account (so a couple hundred dollars).

There really is no telling what way the world will lean when it comes to the concept of virtual property.  People make and change laws, and no matter how you put it, when something you put a lot of time and effort into is lost or taken away from you, you feel wronged.

In addition, the EULA is not a legally binding document.  It is something that they use to make you think you are bound by it (because you agreed to it).  A real world example would be security briefing and debriefing agreements.  Prior to receiving confidential or secret information, military personnel sign a piece of paper saying that they will never tell anyone about anything.  When they are done with said mission, they sign another piece of paper saying they never did or saw anything.  This is very much like an EULA.  In these documents (required by law) it says that you are obligated not to discuss blah blah blah with the exception of the areas of this agreement not found to be legal in a court of law.

There are other examples like states that limit how high of an interest rate a company can charge you for borrowing money.  So even if you agree to pay 2000% a day on your loan, the legal system won't recognize that contract as legally binding.  So an EULA can say that they own everything, but the courts can say that even though you agreed to the EULA, that portion is not legal and therefore you are not bound to it.

Thanks for the linkage.  I like thier post and what they say they are doing about the problem.  Sucks to be one of those guys ; ).

Do a search and read up on tackle.  It is the role of a new pvp pilot.  Basically in the game people can run away.  Either warp out or go to fast and stay out of range.

A tackle uses a cheap ship avail to new pilots and an afterburner to go fast.  They will race to the target, use a webifier (speed debuff) and a warp scrambler/disruptor (root, prevents from warping out). (not in that order, lol)

That way the more experienced pilots with the big ships can blow up the target without them running away.

Check the recruiting channel and see if you can get a corp to adopt you.  Most won't let you actually join, but they may let you go with them and do some tackling.  Don't worry about making friends or enemies on the trial.  If you decide to keep the game you can always re roll a character and transfer all your money.

Alternatively you can join a gang with your friends and go to some belt in high sec space and just fight each other.  Make sure you are in a gang though.

They're not going to just hand you everything you need to be competitive and tell you how to have fun.  It's no different in any other MMOs.  It was the same way in WoW.  You weren't able to compete or get into the raid portion of the game until you hit max level.  You really weren't a threat in PvP until max level, and these days you're not a threat unless you're a couple tiers into the raid gear.

I'd rather play EVE for a month and start being able to help my corp mates in PvP and be rewarded for it, than have to play for 6 months to try to get the same stuff as them.  If you specialize in EVE, and due to the caps on skills (A level 5 skill is only 5% better than a level 4 skill for instance, it just takes longer to train), you can catch up to an older player in no time.  A player can only be so good at firing a certain type of weapon or flying a certain type of ship.

You say that, but who in the first month knows how/what to specialize in and finds a corp?  I may pick it up and try it again with this new expansion though.

I know what you are talking about.  The first day of my 14 day trial was so confusing.  And then I relized I needed a lot more help than I would in the normal MMO.  So I found several newbie guides that told me what to get and such.  On day 2 I was running missions, day 3 I was in a cruiser.  By day 7 I had a tackler and was running in gangs in 0.0.  Day 10 I joined a coporation and got my battle cruiser.  Day 12 I subscribed.

So in short, pick up one of those newbie player creation guides.  Follow it, learn the mechanics, specialize in one area (I recomend combat), run missions until you can afford to throw away a few hundred ISK.  A tackler is a ship like the merlin with a few modules on it.  Doesn't take much skill to fly and you can greatly help a gang.  You insure it for full price for a few hundred thousand ISK.  The modules will run less than a hundred thousand isk.  Can recover the costs of loosing one with 1 or 2 level 1 missions.

Best of luck when you take the dive.  Can message me in game if you need further direction.  Madd Bomber

The latest patch has neutered my sound card.  I am wondering if anyone has found a work around.

Basically, to get the X-Fi to enable hardware support for Eve in Vista you copied a dsound.ini and dsound.dll file into the Eve Bin Folder.

They added a file check to eve now that makes it so the game won't launch with extra files in the folders (including those two).  So now I can't have hardware accelerated sound in game.

The number of voices seems so limited now that it is painful to listen to battles.  I'm used to being hit in 20 different directions and returning fire, and being able to hear EVERY shot.  Now I can't.

Any help, maybe an INI setting that increases the number of sounds (my cpu is a 3.0 core duo and can handle the extra load)

I do a lot of mission running.  Its basically what I do in eve ; ).  I am currently hitting up Level 3 missions with a QF of 13.

I am caldari, so my ship types prefer missiles.  In general though. . (this turned out longer than I thought)

Level 1 missions run in a Frigate
Level 2 missions run in a Cruiser
Level 3 missions run in a Battle Cruiser
Level 4 missions run in a Battle Ship, maybe with support depending on how many times you want to warp out.  (So I hear)

So plan your skill advancement accordingly using Eve Mon.  Right now I run them in a Drake, although the guide belows shows how you can run level 4 missions in a Drake, so will try that out once I get there.

As said before, dress for success.  So you need to know what to expect during the missions.  An EXCELENT in game tool is Chepe Nolon's Mission Running Page.  Add that URL to your in game browser (I set it as my homepage).  Then IN GAME look up the mission you are about to run.  It will tell you what to expect, what damage type they deal, and what damage type they are weak at.  This way you can load up on the right type of ammo and boost your resists in the right areas.

Another great tool to make sure your ship is outfitted the best it can without spending a fortune swapping out components (can also show you what skills to train to squeeze that last module on) is Quick-Fit.

The final thing to do, is maximize the level and quality of the missions you are going to run.  The process sounds complicated, but once you do it, you'll love it.  There are several ways to get to this screen, I am showing a longer but sure bet way to get there.

  1. Hit your Character Sheet on the left top of the window.
  2. Select the Standings button on the left of the new window.
  3. Select the Liked By Tab (or Disliked, hope not lol)
  4. Select your Race (So for me it is Caldari State) and hit the blue (i) button to the right of it.
  5. Select Member Corporations Tab

You will now see a list of all the corporations for your race (NPC).  Take some time and pick the one you are going to run missions for (Starting out I recommend just one, later you can adjust faction if need be).

You want a large corp that has many agents running the type of missions you want.
I highlighted the types of missions that Combat Pilots should prefer.

Administration: 50% Kill, 50% Courier
Advisory: 34% Kill, 66% Courier
Archives: 5% Kill, 90% Courier, 5% Trade
Astrosurveying: 40% Kill, 30% Courier, 25% Mining, 5% Trade
Command: 97% Kill, 3% Courier
Distribution: 5% Kill, 95% Courier
Intelligence: 85% Kill, 15% Courier
Internal Security: 95% Kill, 5% Courier

Legal: 50% Kill, 50% Courier
Manufacturing: 5% Kill, 95% Courier
Marketing: 5% Kill, 95% Courier
Mining: 5% Kill, 85% Courier, 10% Mining (II)
Production: 5% Kill, 95% Courier
Public Relations: 34% Kill, 66% Courier
RnD *: 0% Kill, 50% Courier(S), 50% Trade
Security: 90% Kill, 5% Courier, 5% Trade
Storage: 5% Kill, 95% Courier(L)
Surveillance: 95% Kill, 5% Courier

On the member corps tab, just select each corp's info button, then click on the Agent Tab.  See how many agents of each type they offer.  I run with Caldari Navy and they have like, 25 Command, 30 Security, 20 Surveillance, ectra.  So very nice for a Combat Pilot.  I assume that other factions navy corps are the best choice as well.

Once you have picked the corp you are going to be running missions for, look at their agent list.  Under each type of agent it will list the ones that are available to you, and the ones that are not available to you.  The further down the list, the higher faction is required to use them and the better cash and more difficult the missions will be.

If an agent is not available to you, open their info section up, and under agent info (make the window bigger to see it), they will tell you what faction you need with their corp for them to give you missions.

Your faction is listed on the corp tab (right next to the agent list).

Now you can select what agent is best to run with for your current faction.  You're all set with the basics for effective mission running.

A few additional comments.

When selecting an agent, look at what system they are in, and what systems are attached to it (constellations).  Agents have always sent me on combat runs either in their system, or to a constellation 1 jump away.  Make sure that all constellations are at least 0.5 sec space for the safest mission running.

I always know what faction I need for the next level of missions (the lowest quality agent for that level).  Every 15 missions you get a storyline mission (do it for state faction increase).  Right after that mission, or when you get enough faction for the next level, re look at your agent list and go to the best agent.  This way you usualy run with one of the best agents for your faction.

The social skills will help you get the most of your missions.

  • Social skill give you 5% better faction increase per mission.
  • Connections (requires Social level 3) gives 4% bonus to effective faction
  • Negotiations gives 5% more pay per mission.
  • DoD and Political Connections give 5% more LP per mission (but cost a lot to train)

When looking at the mission details, the higher the pay, the harder the mission.  So if you get one that is 2x the normal pay, standby.

Finally, I STRONGLY recommend you learn how to salvage and use a tractor beam.  My drake runs with 2 salvagers and 1 tractor beam.  You can easily make as much as loot, bounty and mission pay combined in salvage alone from 1 mission, doubling your profit. When you outfit your ship, balance your fire power with salvage and cargo hold capability.  The goal is for the entire mission including salvaging and looting and killing to be completed as fast as possible.  I could put 7 launchers and 1 salvager on my drake and destroy everything in my path.  But then I would spend over an hour trying to salvage all the wrecks.

Best of luck to you, and if you have any questions my in game name is Madd Bomber
