I recomend Guild Wars, the entire concept of the game is PvP straight up. if you are looking for large scale pvp try L2 or DaoC. |

World of Warcraft: Keeping Wow in WoW: Trapped in Outland
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/16/07 4:51:52 PM
I agree with the previous poster in the fact that all blizzard should really be trying to expand is the PvP content. they will never really nail down a good PvE game. but the concept of World of Warcraft is PvP in nature, factional warfare, and they need to focus on the Warfare aspect. dont worry about making PvE gameplay more dynamic, but actually create a war! make the faction worth fighting for! when an orc screams for the horde he better be choppin the head of a dwarf, not playing some stupid carnival game,,... |

anyways, has anyone found some reliable information about the asmodians? NCSoft is keeping that shit under wraps pretty tight. from everything ive read, i believe they will be similar in shape and size to the Elyos. they are both Daeva, after all. Asmodians just come from the Upper half of the split in the world, where no light shines.. so think of the Elyos, but all pale and dark and creepy lookin features, thats my guestimate right now anyways. |

i hope NCSoft doesnt feel rushed on this project, id rather it take another 6 months for beta to hit U.S soil than have a pile of crap to test next month |

Originally posted by bezadosome of these are a bit old, but my information was not in-correct. Just because it failed in Tampa does not mean its failing across the country. Did you look into it at all? because ive been watching it for the last couple years... I know for sure sanfrancisco is either already implementing it, or is planning to, the only really big thing holding city wide wi-fi networks back is getting people to pay for it..
this one hit in 2004! http://www.walkersands.com/Grand-Haven-First-Citywide-WiFi.htm im sure i could waste another 15 minutes of my time finding a few more articles that show that it is possible, its being used, and there are many many articles across the web that are showing how it will become more and more likely that it will be used over the next 10 years.. next time do some research of your own before you come across like a jack ass... or do i need to quote source material every time i make a statement now.. |

um....read a fucking newspaper once in a while... or you know..anything.. it was at least three years ago, a few major cities starting offering city wide wi-fi., transmitters atop light posts across the city. it caught on in a few places, and now that the test phases are done alot of major cities are thinking of working it into the budget to pick up the same program. the whole point was no more looking for "hot spotts". sorry for the angry post but ignorance is no excuse....that and i just got out of a budgeting meeting that can stroke me...i need a bowl... |

I am also from wisconsin, but the county i live in has cable/dsl access, but my city has only had it for about 7 years now, prior to that i was playing Counterstrike on 56K :) oh yea, it was fun trying to compesate for lag, have to lead a target by about 6 feet!! anyways, to OP, most of the satelite providers in wisconsin are fairly stable, meaning you shouldnt have problems gaming with a satalite conection, unless there is a storm, then your conection will probably go dead. an overcast might give you a bit of lag, but overall performace will be far superior to 56K. We need to push for wisconsin cities to go the route of bigger cities.. city wide WI-FI ftw! |

my old roomie had gotten me hooked on his trackball. it was optical with a scroll wheel, after i got accustomed to it it was amazing! i was extremely deadly in FPS's, (mostly c.s and U.T ) once you get the hang of it, it becomes much faster and way more accurate than a reg. mouse. so many running/jumping/spinning headshots!! im talkin run, jump, sping, headshot, land running in the original direction!! TRACKBALL FTW!! i hated it at first took me almost a month to start to love it, and you really have to tweak sensitivity to your personal liking. and you can fit so many hot keys on the good track balls. for my rig at home i wont use anything but a trackball.

I hate to anoy the OP and use WoW as an example, but it was the last game I played, (quit about 7 months ago, waiting on Aion/War/PotBS) but it does make for a good example of what MMOs are like today. I actually liked how they did the grouping and grouping content in WoW, not just the 5 man instances, (wich btw, Deadmines was the first one i did, and is still, my favorite, screw end-game content, i remember my first deadmines experience more than i do my first End-game run!) but i enjoyed how i could base my game-play on mood, if i felt like just casually grinding out some quest xp, or gather some mats i could solo for HOURS before i had to group to finish a chain or beat a specific mob. But if i really wanted to hammer out a ton of quests in a short amount of time, i could grab a group (typically very quick) and we could pound out the quests crazy fast, all the while enjoying our selves. group combat was fun for the most part. (i typically liked to chalenge myself, see how many mobs i could drop at once). As for forced grouping, im not a fan of. 80% of the content in WoW is soloable, (you usually have to be a bit more experienced before you can solo certain content). but grouping is usually an option. I like options. I dont want to be forced into a group unless some sort of storyline/plot explains why. They give me a story for this group to set out on epic adventure i will sign on in a heart-beat, but if i have to group just so i can gain a lvl, then im a bit irritated. |

Unlocking new abilities and skills
Characters, Skills, Etc. « Developers Corner 10/05/07 5:23:42 PM
That is possibly one of the best ideas i have heard to mask a grind yet! congrats!! I saw something similar in an xbox game called Advent Rising ( written by Orson Scott Card) where the more you used a weapon, not only the better you got at it, but it unlocked new uses of that weapon. its been applied in a lot of other single player games as well. masking the metagame though? ive been thinking about that my self lately as well, though Im no game developer, I am just working on a game design of my own as a hobby. Anyways, the best way i could see to keep the metagame out (or delay it as long as possible, inevitably someone will figure it out and board strats all over the net) would be to make many paths to the same goal for each "skill". but id recomend making all the paths take the same amount of effort/time. so they might practice their sword skills with their friends, dueling or what not, or possibly go hack out in the open. but they could also raise their skill by crafting blades and gaining understanding on how a weapon functions. or possibly they could do enough tasks for an evil necromancer to where he would bind the spirit of an old warrior to the toon, granting him the knowledge needed to raise that skill. But like i said, dont have one path be more powerfull or faster than the other, because obviously gamers that figured it out would only use one path. this would help diminish metagame (probably not erase it entirely, practically impossible to do in a video game, when its all based on numbers, in preconstructed world, not like the world created by a GM in a pen and paper game.) and it would let the player feel like he has choice, and had some real desicion on the evolution of his character. Of course this hypothetical system would take lots and lots of time to develop. but hopefully you find what works for you. |

There is plenty of Info out about the game, it just requires some digging around. The Asmodians are not "demons" in the traditional sense, nor are there counterparts "angels". the Asomdians are just described (so far) as being demonic in features,, (more evil badass looking) and hte Elyos are more angelic looking (more you know... goodish) while neither are directly good/bad (evil/lessevil). They just have conflicting poiunts of view, and the Baalur (npc faction) are just draconic-ish. I really think the devs are trying to make a unique fantasy world here, and so far it looks like they are doing a good job. getting away from the "beat-to-death" elves/dwarves/humans/(insert other typical fantasy creature here) formula that so many games (good and bad, console/pc/ what ever) have used for so long. Its almost refreshing. |

Which MMO; EQ2, Vanguard, or Wow?

That is why it has to be reffered to as "general". Everyone finds joy in a different aspect of a game, just from your post I can almost garuntee that i play MMORPGS for a different reason than you, but that doesnt mean that I,or anyone else for that matter, play for instant gratification. To OP: going by reviews made by the general public is a good idea, take in a wide variety of reviews on each game you want to try, check out the features of each game and the pro's and con's from the view of other players! short of playing for yourself the only info you can rely on is the "general public". Hopefully punks like this dont have to much influence on your decision.
hey vajuras, if you happen to scan this board, lil more eye appealing ? |

Is there a possiblity that aion will become number 1?
General Discussion « Aion 10/03/07 4:40:15 PM
From everything that has been released about Aion i think it will make a pretty big stand and a really big impact on the MMO comunity, Now i am giving the devs a chance to prove that it is not just another asian grindfest ( though they havnt said much on how they plan to do that, besides in depth quests and story lines), the story line so far looks pretty dynamic, and the "story" will differ from server to server pending on the actions of the players (really cool). will it hit #1? possible, i doubt it, at least there will be no hurricane Aion like there was with WoW, ,the NCsoft fanbase is huge already due to there other games, but no where near rivaling Blizzards. but so far Aion has a chance, looks promising, as for those bashing the game, isnt it a bit premature to bash it? dont fall for all the hype, but do the research yourself (with the little information that is available). nothing so far makes this game look like crap, it has a beautiful design, the features anounced so far are definetly features that gamers on these forums have been screaming they want. It wont be the GodSend of MMOs, but i think its yet another step in the right direction. |

Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning: Battle at the Gates of Ekrund

Originally posted by Ozmodan You shouldnt have to worry about them having problems melding the rulesets into an MMO. But blizzard didnt have to "meld" to many rules from its RTS into the MMO. Warhammer is just a theme, a setting. Its the world that the MMO will be based in, instead of having predetermined unit stats (like they give you so you can roll up the dice in the TT game) thats what each player represents. |
