I started out several years ago playing mmo's because they were more than a video game, but more a way of life.....This is the ONLY reason I enjoyed mmo's. Don't get me wrong I tried to balance real life too. For the past two years I've been searching for that feeling. I just can't scratch that itch I have.

I CAN'T USE THE WORDS, OLD SCHOOL. The words "old school" should not even be used.

I CAN USE THE WORDS, A WAY OF LIFE. This is what should have evolved. Better graphics, game play, coding of the way of life.

The full list of mmo's that were a way-of-life ( nothing to do with old school ).

- Everquest 1

- Everquest 2

- Ultima Online

- Vanilla WoW

- Eve

- Vanguard

- DAOC

- Final Fantasy 11

- SWG

- LOTRO

- Guild Wars 1

This is it. I may have missed one or two but for the most part this is it. Some were not my style but that's not what the list is about. I wish mmos should have evolved using a way of life instead of fun to play cash grabs with others around you on a screen.

Please add if I missed one.

Next stop?

+1 on the cartoon look.....Screw graphics and give us gameplay :)

I'm really trying to be standoffish on Wildstar until I see if they are gonna play around with f2P crap ( if that's the case, I will not play ). But so far I'm loving everything Wildstar..........Please be a good mmo, because we all know we need one.

Rift or TSW?

Not sure about TSW

But Rift is a carrot on a stick game until you get to max level.

It's hard to play with others as you go from quest hub to quest hub, and must be on the same quest line to play with others....This game should not be an mmo unless you like to play solo with others around you....If your a social group type player you will find that you cant keep friends as you have to match quest.

It's a well done game besides that.....mmo, well, no !

+1 for the OP

I have that super computer that will play ANYTHING on max, but its all about gameplay. Developers are putting too much time on graphics and many mmo's suck because of it !

#1  I don't hear people saying that !.........With every new hype you will get one or two that will say that just to piss others off.

By the way WoW retail version sucks !

Vanilla WoW was ALL about immersion.

I remember the last time I played the retail version of WoW I made it to about level 16 and went to Westfall.  They turned the entire zone into a small under attack area with like two quest to it.  Some would say this was imersive but all I've gotten out of it was two real fast easy quest with out any purpose in grouping, then on to the next zone.....With this I knew right there this 30 days of game time was gonna suck bad.

From here I logged into some of my higher level characters ( ranging from 30 to 80 ). In every case the game was made for pure quing for dungeons.  I was amazed how out of touch I was with this new style of game play.  Everything I know about grouping was out the door. It turned into a speed race with different mechanics......My Priest job was to use three abilities. Quick heal, long heal, and group heal. Thats all, no time to buff or use anything else. Tanks would run soooo fast I could not keep up with the healing.

Then lets talk about quitting and kicking.  If I did run a longer dungeon ( 20min as apposed to the 10 min ones ) people would be in and out so fast making my head spin. Most groups would end with an entire new group but the end.......They really screwed up the retail version.

As I see it. Most everyone that still likes the game are the ones that belong to the elite closed off guilds, because the game is crap now.

I don't want Wildstar to be free to play.  I want their business model to be exactly like WoW's.  Barrier to entry, submission based, almost all perks and fun stuff are part of a monthly sub, other non-game breaking, cosmetic fluff in a cash shop.

I hate F2P games and the AH crash going on right now in Neverwinter is a perfect example of why.  20 bucks a month... sound fair?  Please give me back sub based gaming.

I hope all you " not paying anything " players get far and never give them a dime.

The free to play crap game developers need to learn to stop making this junk !

I don't get fooled.

I just don't play games with cash shops, or at least any game that has anything to do with paying for equipment. Other than GW2 because its a reputable B2P, I don't play around with them.

Just because mmos are going in that direction, I don't par-take in that crap !!

Years ago, I would play around with free to play games knowing full well I would only play for a few days. Now I don't even bother.

I will NEVER give a cash shop a dime.

I see no evidence of this other than "it's F2P so it has to be" and a useless chart.

There are many great factors, as well as past tendencies, that need to be considered before even a logical assertion could be established.  Traditionally Cryptic releases a game, updates it fairly often and then has an expansion for it before shifting their complete focus on another game.  We already have confirmations that new classes are on the way, and they're frequently updating the game and targeting exploits on an hourly basis.

If one were to follow their Facebook and fan reactions, one could easily ascertain the notion that many are quite happy with this game and the services rendered.  When the game is brought down either due to stress or to update, they instantly state what is going on on their facebook page and offer updates every fifteen minutes.  Beyond that, they also have a trivia game they play with people inbetween those fifteen minutes.  This is much more than just "oh, that's cute", but rather has a great effect to people.

Most comments seen to date whenever this happens are of praise, people saying they've never seen such quick responses to server issues and keeping everyone appraised of what's going on.  Add to that you almost always see multiple replies from Neverwinter from people having problems or saying "keep up the good work".  Indeed, even the increase in facebook likes isn't slowing down, and has already neared the 100k likes -- 40,000 more than Champions Online which has been fully released for years -- and almost near to as much as Star Trek has even with it's first expansion released not too long ago.  All the while it's still in open beta, and only two weeks have passed.

As a whole I've seen naught but media praise for the game, and most people saying that it's "a lot of fun".  There are a few who play the tutorial and say it's not "DnD" enough, but there are always judgmental people who judge things based on the cover.  The cash shop seems to be bringing them in a lot of business as well, as more people are buying zen to transfer into AD than there is AD being made in the entirety of the game.  The price of AD per zen keeps on falling, and we'll soon see 300, whereas it was 800 towards the start.  This means that, with each person that places Zen one point below, we have more zen being bought then there is Astral Diamonds available.  I wouldn't be surprised if we saw 100 AD per zen within the next few months.

Also keep in mind that there are many other things such as Ardent and Celestial coins that one obtains by logging in every day and praying at a statues.  Not to mention the way crafting is presented, you are able to do quick ones or leave it crafting while you log off, and the capabilities of the foundry.  Neverwinter has become one of their most successful games to date, and they haven't even built an expansion for it as they have their two prior games that are F2P.

We'll see the natural dip within a few months, but at the momentum it's going, there is absolutely no way that the game will simply die out or got all flat in just two weeks time (or thirty days after release).  It will also maintain a great following, and if past is any indication of the future, it may even get twice the facebook likes of Star Trek by the time it releases it's first real expansion.  Though, the next big patch has already been hinted, and they made a teaser webpage for it.

http://nw.perfectworld.com/module1

I personally plan to log in every day to collect my daily AD, start long crafts and collect Ardent and Celestial Coins (though you have to spend Celestial once every seven days. and are able to get free increased success boosts for enchants and crafting from such).  Aside from that, I will partake in foundry quests and the making thereof when the time is appropriate.  In addition to that, I'll likely buy new character slots each time a new class is released and perhaps acquire anything that may be of interest that they eventually put in.

Point to point, there is no way one could even appropriately fathom how long it's "shelf life" will be without even seeing what types of patches they will release, and the direction they will take this.  The teaser for the first "module" is looking intriguing and is likely to introduce either the Ranger or the Druid.  Since the Ranger and the Warlock were both datamined, I'd say it's the former.  We may also see an entirely new area that pertains to the Ranger, as there are many areas left unexplored in the Forgotten Coasts.

Sounds nice,

However, large businesses often use prediction charts as I am here. But something else needs to be considered, and thats Marketing and Accounting.

No one on the outside knows exact figures. I could only guess that in the video game market developers count on up front profits. My CEO was an accountant. He always stated to us " lets deal with the here and now, because we don't know what the future holds " Make our money now !

A small example :

Everquest 2....For years and before it went F2P. Had a small core group of hard core players. All new players never lasted long. It was even to the point that the true player base would not even acknowledge them until they were proven players because of the retention problem.

Now for years SOE would create expansion after expansion and market it as NEW.............It was all about box and digital download sales.............They were dealing with up front profits over and over, this this method of marketing worked well for them for a very long time.

It's often make money and get out !

With the F2P cash shop. This mmo sounds like it will start off big and drop faster than any other mmo had done in the past. Developers may very well be ok with this, using the  " get in make fast money and get out marketing technique ".

Why do you think we are here.

We are in 2013, not 2009

Got hacked about 5x in a one years time back around 2011, called them, chnged passwards..

Gave up because the GAME WENT TO CRAP ANYWAY !

9 million my butt hole, repeat after me " Marketing "

Good post OP.............In fact one of the best post in a long time !

We have crap now.  They are not even mmos anymore, just solo games with others on line.  Vanguard was the last of the real mmos, too bad about the early release, and the bad coding used from EQ2.

Phase one of down hill - Players screeming for better graphics. This took away from quality of game play, to much time spent in something that was un-duable.

Phase two of down hill - Auto everything, Dungeon finders, fast easy leveling, and advertising all events instead of finding things on your own. Worlds became small and the start of 30 day mmos.

Phase three of down hill - Cash shops, F2P, P2W

Well people are getting hacked, Dungeon finder kills Open world, and fast leveling makes everyone buy every expantion in a matter of weeks.  Sure WoW is going down hill...........Everyone I know had quit years ago !

The mind set of this topic ?......People here on this site are acking like players have a choice !

Old farts my butt.....Developers are changing mmos, not the new young players....You have no choice.

Their is no  " Grand Poll " of what players are asking for.  Developers are making games simple, easy kill, fast travel, auto everything on their own !

People must think others are goint to this majic web site. Voting for " easy softer mmos ".  Then depelopers are going there, reading the polls and making there games that way !!!!

In a sense, yes. The reality is that these games sell. Millions of them! If players "did not want" these games, would they buy them hand over foot?

Devs may not look at polls, buy they DO look at bottom lines. Players support that bottom line with almost every new release.

Sorry but games sell because of marketing only.

In the 80's it was all about the back of the box.

- Now marketing has it even better, with non gameplay videos.  Remember the the great Warhammer Online Pre-release video ?......Then we had Open bata, people found it boring as hell, yet the game was so hyped that most EVERYONE GOT IT ANYWAY.

- Same with Vanguard. Total mess in bata, EVERYONE GOT IT ANYWAY.

- World of Warcraft, Loved by millions. Now the developers are saying people want " easy ".  A few 7 year olds on the WoW forums complained, and that gave the developers a chance to give less content.......Now you have to buy every expantion in less than a month......By the way 9 million players my butt !

- Now we have Neverwinter, with it's cashshop on crack.....Get this.....The quest have popcorn trails leading you to where you have to go :)

What does all of the crap given to us now have to do with old farts ?

Will be f2p soon enough.

Just like ESO is a guild wars 2 clone with a few twists. Score!

In fairness, this was my initial reaction when I saw the first trailer video for ESO.  Still don't expect it to be much different.

For me, I can't even rate Wildstar as for gameplay untill I find out some VERY BASIC questions.

- Is it a F2P, money sucking mmo.

- When

A few post here are guessing it's not a f2P.......But the marketing department is playing a their games and holding off.  Until I know, it's just another mmo on the long list of about 100

Most all are crap now,,,,I agree !
