Wildstar, Beta now open!  I took this to mean open beta.  I took the time out of my day to go set up a NC account and go through their tedious verification process, then they let me know if they decide to let me participate I'll get an email some day.

What a cute waste of time.  Thanks.

I wasn't thrilled with the add either. Cool that it will work for them when it comes to getting beta applications, but I doubt there was any shortage of applicants to begin with. This one has been hyped for a while, and being misleading leaves a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

As long as the game remains fun, then it doesn't matter at all.

The trick is making the content fun enough that you don't really bother thinking too much about what level you are.

This list should have EVE and WoW. Those are arguably 2 of the best on any platform, so why they would leave them off of a list like this?
Make it optional.
Hasn't that been there for a while? I signed up right after their big presentation....

I'm currently only able to get to certain sites. Sites like and Engadget are fine, but ESPN and Facebook are not loading at all. Must be something up with the internet (I'm in upstate New York).

Funcom will only partially load for me right now.

I could care less what it looks like if they can pull off most if not all of the systems they are saying they are going to have. I mean common, most MMOs out there that are worth playing don't have the best graphics. If I want a pretty game I will go play a single player RPG or Adventure game but that is not what I am here for and I am also not here for massively single player games either, which is what a lot of games have turned into including WOW.

Go play EQ for an hour...Then go play EQ2 for an hour....Then go play Vanguard for an hour......After you've played those 3 and see how crappy everything works and how many things are broken, then think again what EQN will be like.....This game will have more problems than most celebrities in the tabloids.

Well, if you play Vanguard last, sure, you're going to be left with the feeling that a lot of stuff is broken. I played EQ and EQ2 for a long time, and I never felt like either had a ton of problems. I mean, there were some small problems from time to time, but nothing worse than I've experienced in a ton of other MMOs, and better than most.

I actually like Vanguard (or the overall concept) quite a bit, I just can't argue with things not working quite as they would have liked. I played in the closed beta for that game, and it had the potential to be my favorite of all time. They just screwed it up. A lot.

Ok look. STOP

STOP once again. Can we please understand one thing here.

It's free to play!!! They are not going to waste hours and hours of dev time on this game. For those expecting something miraculous around the corner you need to accept there this is it.

There is no nothing spectacular happening.

They have made it clear any all races can be all classes. Effectively just making it ONE race/class that can be anything. they did this because its cost effective. They don't have to spend months sorting out much on the class/race issue.

This is going to but a hack n slash 8 button easy button bash game. They are not going to spend millions and millions making it something hugely spectacular with indepth game play.

Please understand this. It's free 2 play.

Thank you for clarifying this for us, all knowing one.

This is EQ. This isn't Dragon's Prophet, or Vanguard, or some other title that SOE has "adopted". This is SOE's very own baby. Don't confuse f2p with not being a major title that a lot of time is being put into.

Ok, I had some fun playing this game, joined a decent guild, and (very) slowly gained prowess. PVP was pretty fun, but in the end, it's still too much of a grind for me. Primalist was totally wimpy when it came to leveling up on the PVE stuff.

Yes there are cheaters, and plenty of them. I've witnessed some firsthand, heard tell of many others. Yes there are (or were, at least) plenty of bugs. I suffered more server dcs in this game than in any I've played in years.

Now, this isn't to say that it's a bad game. It can be quite fun, but I don't think it deserved a 7.6 rating. I would say it merits something between 6 and 7.

EverQuest NEXT Combat and Gameplay (early stages)

Here's the response he got [warning: extreme nerdrage]:

I have 3 major problems with this game:

1.) Sony Online Entertainment? SOE? No. Not happening.
2.) It's a PvE game, with some PvP tacked on. Just like WoW & every other shitty themepark mmo.
3.) It's free to play. AKA pay-to-win.

As a PvP-minded gamer, my minimum requirements for an MMORPG in 2013+ are:

1.) Must be a PvP game FIRST, with PvE tacked on (if at all!), NOT the other way around.

2.) Must have meaningful Risk vs. Reward. That means lootable corpses. That means there's a reason to fear death. It means I get to burn your [weee!]ing house down.

3.) Character progression must NOT be carrot-and-stick bs like "get better gear" so you can level up, so you can get more, even better gear.

4.) Compelling and fun combat that is SKILL BASED. NO tab targeting. NO heat-seeking magic spells. Aim your arrow or gun properly or you do NO damage. Combat should be, at its most basic, easy to learn, but difficult to master.

Mount & Blade: Warband, and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare are good examples. So are BF3 and Super Smash Bros, and Street Fighter.

5.) One large, fully persistent world, which is NOT divided by INSTANCES of ANY kind. We have the technology.

7.) A robust, player-driven economy, with many trades/skills players can use to aid themselves and each other. No one player should be able to do everything. Nor should dungeon-raiding or PvE in ANY form be a requirement for staying competitive in the PvP endgame.

MAJOR Bonus points if...
8.) Full player clipping. No walking through each other. DEFINITELY no walking through enemy players.

9.) Players can directly affect/alter/shape the world. See Shadowbane, Dark Age of Camelot, and Star Wars Galaxies for good examples. The ideal of this would be a system like Wurm Online's, wherein players can actually alter the shape of the LAND itself through TERRAFORMING, pretty much with 0 limits.

Bonus points if...
10.) The gear I see an enemy wearing is the gear that enemy will drop when defeated. For both mobs/NPC's and players. If I go into a dungeon and see a badass demon of human-raping lvl 99, and that demon is wielding a flaming-[wee!]ing [woo]-sword, and I manage to slay that demon, I WANT MY FLAMING [wee!]ING [woo!]SWORD. I also want all that glowing armor the demon was wearing.

WHAT I DO NOT WANT, is what these themeparks games shove up my [waa!]. random-shitty [waa]loot that may or may not be useful to me. I DO NOT want RANDOMLY generated loot tables, so I have to kill the same [wee!]ing monster 88 times before I get my magical-hat-of-not-getting-my-ass-kicked-in-that-instanced-battleground-anymore.

11.) There is only one, massive server for the entire game world. Servers are, after all, just larger versions of instances. CCP got this aspect right in EVE online.

12.) One character per account, per player - linked to IP address, MAC address, player name, physical address, etc.

13.) Pretty graphics and beautiful world design.

14.) Day/night cycle where nighttime is ACTUALLY dark. DayZ dark. "Dark nights, bright lights." Make torches give off a good amount of light so they'll be easy to spot from a distance. This will force players to adapt strategically as the game changes from day to night, and allows for an entire stealth meta-game on dark nights. Include a real lunar cycle so that no moon = full dark /and/ full moon = almost twlight in visibility.

So yeah, I'm hard to please. But this is also 2013 and there's precisely ZERO reasons why a game fitting the above could not be made (aside from it probably won't make as much money as the shitty WoW-clones). Frankly, I give precisely zero fucks about any game which does not at least ATTEMPT to meet my basic requirements.

Star Citizen, Camelot Unchained, and Embers of Caerus are really the only MMORPG's I know of that are worth my attention. Star Citizen is the only one of those 3 that has a release window within the next 18 months.

Wow. Minimum requirements, huh? I have one minimum requirement for an MMO: fun

Regarding EQ:N, the most exciting aspect of that game is the AI, in my opinion. If they deliver on that, I don't know how you can call it a theme park. Most theme parks I've been to don't have rides that move themselves to a different location, or decide that they are going to be a roller coaster instead of a merry-go-round. I think the requirement for PVP decreases in importance as the intelligence of the NPCs increases.

I think you guys are missing the point. Others are stealing aggro, running the mob out until it resets (to the end of its "leash"), and then grabbing ownership of the freshly reset mob. Essentially, they are being big jerks and stealing the mob by abusing the mechanics.

SE would need to change the mechanics or something so that a mob reset this way would still be tied to the original owner for a short period of time (even a second or two would suffice).
I spam it for a while, take a break, repeat. Not working at all though. Haven't been able to get in since Sunday.

The biggest mistake SE made with ARR is that they didn't launch it like FFXI. They should have released in in Japan only for a year prior to NA market get a chance to play it. Bottom line is the NA crowd is has zero patience, zero tolerance and jumps at any reason to find fault. If they had just released in Japan only, they would have had months to iron out all the bugs, get everything running perfectly, and then gone for a NA launch. Then the only thing we'd have to whine about is how we didn't get the game sooner.....

Except that they seem to be running pretty smoothly on the Japanese servers. I played on there for an hour or two today, but I have trouble bringing myself to get too invested. It doesn't seem to have helped them figure out what is wrong with the NA servers, where I would really prefer to be.

I'm just as down about the whole early access fiasco as anyone else, but I really hope this doesn't have a huge impact on numbers. I've been sarcastic, and grouchy, and disappointed, but I'm still going to play. SE is going to have to do a lousy job for a longer period of time than 2 days to drive me away.

I would like to see them make progress of some sort, though.  It's been one problem after the next, and none of their downtime seems to have solved anything. If all this downtime over the first 48 hours hasn't fixed anything, when do they finally say, "Hey, it's pretty broken, and we need to take everything down for a while (days) and figure stuff out. We clearly weren't ready for a launch, or even an early access period."

Did you buy it from SE? They are probably swamped with a billion other things to do, it may just take a while to get sent out. Definitely don't wait longer than the release day. Call support if you don't get it by the 28th, but I'd suspect you'd get it tonight or tomorrow.

Well, I would go with this... if SE's website relied on hamster wheels to keep it going. Perhaps all of the Lalafells are busy making "FFXIV Rules!" tabards instead of hand filing credit card orders.

Don't wait to call support. Your index card may get lost in the fire that will undoubtedly happen when the NA/EU servers explode due to  excessive connection attempts.

My server, Aegis, is running fine -  the server they placed my legacy character on.  I don't really know about the rest of them.

I've been wondering if I ought to try one of the Japanese servers myself...

Now, I understand that bugs happen- my questions is why the Japanese servers are all still up? What did they do differently there? Were the NA and EU servers kind of an afterthought when it came to catching the bugs?

Just curious...

Will probably do so if I don't receive early access code by tomorrow.

I've seen a lot of people saying this. I never received the email with the early access code at all, I just followed the instructions on the order completion page and entered my serial code at this address:

and it gave me my early access.

As for the server locks, they update pretty frequently, or at least they did in beta 4. Just keep trying. They aren't just trying to keep the starter areas open, they are also trying to prevent everyone from starting on the same servers, so they can't just do a queue. Then people who didn't really have any reason to select a server beyond the name sounding cool will move to a different server and balance the load out a bit.

I honestly like the way they are doing it. It will probably lessen the need for server merges later on. They could have come up with some sort of pre-registration, I guess, but considering we haven't even got through a day of early access without the EU and NA servers being taken down, It would have probably just been an extra layer of disaster.

I'd be interested to know exactly how the timer's programming determines what to show. What time is it where you are? Perhaps the program isn't designed to take into account all locations and time zones? Is it possible that the code is using your local time, but that it doesn't know enough to make the adjustment?

I mean, I don't know why they would do it that way, as opposed to just using their server time, but it's just a thought...

They said there would be like 40 classes... If I'm not allowed to use 5 of them, I think I could live with that for the sake of lore. Odds are they will add more with future updates/expansions and the number would go up.

I don't think there will be any lack of choices, even with some limitations.

I don't think that it's really fair to mention the fact that the original EQ had a sequel  in half the time that WoW has existed. In fairness, EQ2 launched just ahead of WoW, and that still has no sequel.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a big EQ2 fan (played waaaay longer on that than on WoW), but it wasn't a well thought out statement to make.
