I think the problem with most of the Naysayers is, they come to Second Life expecting to be "fed". There is no being "fed" in SL. Its what you can make of it. As it says "Your World, Your Imagination". Some folks just have NO imagination.

I think MissyDevoix got it right. Second Life is what YOU make it. There are no "quests" no hard line rules to follow. To go into Second Life and say "I'm bored" means you have NO imagination, and expect some CORPORATE entity to spoon feed you like a baby. Second Life offers everything you could want, with some give & take. I havent been on it as much, maybe 2-3 times a week. Yet my shop still makes $$. It pays for itself and then some.

Second Life Population still growning despite naysayers
General Discussion « Second Life 1/01/09 6:52:05 AM
Its funny how everyone mentions "sex" in SL. In 3 yrs, I have yet to see or participate in it. We see what we want to see. When you consider it's 18+ if you're offended by "sex" then why are you here?? I'm sure there's some Christian Websites you can visit.

I pay $72/year for a Premium Membership, $15/month for 2 pieces of land, both quite large. I run a store on SL. I dont make nearly as much as I used to, but I blame the Real World economy for that. Thats how it just goes. When I started SL on a basic account, I was given a stipend every Tuesday, but they've done away with that. Still, even Basic, FREE Members have the option of either: A) Camping B) Getting a "job" in SL. C) Creating Content with the tools given out for FREE!!
The last time I bought money in Second Life, I paid a REAL World amount of $7 for $L 2000 worth of in-game currency. Most working or even non-working adults will note that $7 isnt a ton of money.

Well lets see..... I've been playing it for a while, off & on. Made Level 41. Spent a whole $10 at the Item Mall so I can mine meteorites & pick up a few extra baubles. Never had to spend a dime for a decent weapon. Have been having fun going solo, and helping out people every now & then. So far, I like it! For my only gripe: trying to create stuff. I dont want a Fairy Pet. Why do I need these stupid things to do certain things? What is it with these asian MMO's almost requiring a "pet"???

Second Life romance ends with stalking and animal curelty...

Actually there is a GOOD Real Life story to go with this: What about that Female Astronaut stalking that other astronaut?

Second Life romance ends with stalking and animal curelty...

BTW, Sqall'zell, I totally agree with you there. I've been on SL since 2005 and have never endulged in "virtual romance". It's not the same as the 'real' thing. While I won't deny others the right to enjoy it, its not something I can get into. I prefer ALL of my senses to be involved in a romance. Besides, I have met 2 people so far from SL. Both were guys I knew. One just moved to the area. Lets just say their avatars look & act better than they do in Real Life. For the People who think that avatar looks/acts like the person they're "In Love" with I have 2 words: NOT LIKELY!! |

Originally posted by kabal.yero This is very true. To blame Second Life for this event would be like blaming Video Games for Violence. Only a small, small percentage of mentally unbalanced individuals would be affected. One could easily have picked up a stalker thru a simple Yahoo Chatroom.

Not so much a "review" as an Opinion. The 2nd part of your 'review' was close though. As for the Naruto part, well that could already be construed as the reviewer not having a great liking for anime, which this game clearly "tries" to be like. A review would be a bit more detailed in game play mechanics, graphics, lag (which you covered), etc. Eventually I'll get around to trying it. I just dont have the time at the moment.

AH! But there are some places where there's things to kill. I came across one called "Land of the Dead". It was set up like a post-zombie attack city where these Zombies would pop out to attack enmasse. It was a bit laggy at first, as everything hadnt finished streaming in. Once it all did, it wasn't too bad. There are also other various combat areas as well. You will also find other forms of Entertainment: Fishing, Racing, Sailing, skydiving, horse jumping/racing, chariot races, old arcade games, etc. My biggest surprise was finding someone in Japan made a video of their Wrestling Matches where their opponents were several of the avatars I made. But the funny thing is, just as Real Life, there's more to SL than just combat. Your only limited by your imagination.

You can blame the ban of Banks & Gambling on the United States Goverment. SL Banks were 'real financial institutions' just like the tooth fairy is 'real'. Think of it as a twist on the Nigerian Prince emails. Gambling Ban was a No-Brainer. Online gambling was made illegal by a bunch of fussy old senators. On top of that, there was again no regulation of gambling in SL. The person(s) who made the gambling devices could also rig them to never pay out or just plain ol' drain you dry.

Probably based on Mom & Dad not giving him the money to sign up for an Adult Game. |

Simple Answer: They lack ANY ability to think for themselves & be creative. Anyone can create if they give it enough time to learn the skills. Rather than put forth an effort to do something, most would rather sit on their ass & let a company do it for them. What most people pay for playing WoW a year, I make 3x that or more a month. Not selling sex. Not selling RP stuff. Not selling land. Just skins for avatars. Once winter comes along, I'm cashing out some of the money I made in SL and going on a nice vacation. Enjoy playing RPGs folks! It gets you far in life!

Try the Windlight Client. I was always complaining about SL looking like WoW with its dated graphics. Then they came out with the Windlight Client. MUCH better!! It's no "Crysis", but pretty damn good for something that has to stream everything. I must admit that its not for everyone. Those with older systems may not benefit much. But hey! I pull in 30-60+ FPS most places, so I'm not complaining!! **EDIT** For the post about someone's friend encountering "NAMBLA"? I say "Bull". Been there 4 yrs and have yet to see any sign of them being there. Even if they were there, groups like that are quickly banned and the FBI notified of them. Why would your friend go looking for NAMBLA anyways?

Originally posted by paulscott Yes. BUT- if you already have REAL money to spend, as some do, you can easily set yourself up as a landlord. Yet where else can you invest $0, and turn it into $$??? At one time, Basic Accounts (a.k.a. Free) got $L50 every Tuesday. I used that for uploads ($L10 per upload). Spent a few weeks uploading textures, skins, and sounds. Now I'm a Premium Account, own land which I could easily sell off for 4 x what I paid for it (which would net me a nice tidy sum), and I pull in anywhere from $300-$500 a month on stuff I did 2 years ago. SO- for sinking in $0, I managed to have a hobby that pays for itself plus extra. I use the REAL world paycheck for bills N stuff. SL provides me the FUN money. Much better hobby than scrapbooking IMO.

#1 Rule of Second Life: Don't come with hopes of making "Big $$$". Come for the fun. The social experience. Come with an open mind & a willingness to learn new skills. Just as a Real Job, a Second Life job can eat up alot of time. Last I checked, the conversion rate was: $L275 = $1
