Yup, not since the success of WOW has there been a MMO who has captured the hearts and excitement of the players. We been saturated with mediocrate which translates into major fail. In 2007 we had Lotro. Lotro won best MMO that year only because nothing else was out and Turbine took advantge of that. It was a false hope with just average gameplay and a boring world to play in. In 2008 we had the most epic fail year of all time, both AOC and Warhammer flopped big time. So much hope, so much hype and it all went down the tubes in a hurry.

Smaller mmos such as Champions Online and Fallen Earth tried to revive some mmo success but I'm afraid those just didn't quite cut the mustard either. Cryptic botched it up big time when they introduced their first patch and it hasn't been the same since, not to mention the microtransactions+monthly fees isn't exactly appealing either. Fallen Earth isn't that bad but I just don't see it being that kind of mmo where people are getting that excited about it. Then there was Aion. Now Aion has soome good points to it like the polish and beautifult world to play in but NCsoft forgot to make it interesting and fun to play not to mention it just copied what others had done before and just made it look prettier. The amount of gold farmers and bots in this game is horrendous despite the latest massive bans they been doing, its still infested. Server queue problems and too much lag for players is a major issue. It baffles me how NCsoft can get the Asian releases (which has over 2 mill players) correct but not the NA/EU players which has around 400k players. Yup, I'm still pondering that as we speak.

There might be some hope to the mmo genre eventually but I'm afraid the wait is way too long before we see that mmo success again. The MMO "Fail-Train" keeps rolling as mmo players desperately spend their money in order to keep hope alive.

Completely true. Also See signature. Good point dude.

Nope that horrible excuse of a company is not letting people have more then one character unless you are a veteran jedi.

It's been 10 years since the release of Ultima: Online, back in good old 2009 we would have thought that by now games would be on such a level classics like Ultima, Asherons Call, and Everquest, would pale in comparison. However it is now 2009, and most gamers who have played MMO's for any period of time would agree that nothing on the market today can even live up to these original releases.

Nostalgia aside, when critically examining these games, it appears as though with each new release the games are being dumbed down; It reminds me alot of the Mike Judge movie: Idiocracy where overtime people became dumber and dumber as technology allowed them more and more luxeries.

What I have been wondering is why no games with depth and challenge have been introduced to the market since 2003; The closest we have come is darkfall (don't get me started on that tangent) and in many ways I don't even feel as though, it has lived up to it's potential.

Am I the only one who feels like this? Is that why there are no more deep challenging games on the market? What do you guys think?

You are one hundred percent true. I'm an old schooler from Asherons Call myself and none of these crap ass mmorpg's live up to the old school titles or my expectations for that matter. I am currently not playing any mmorpg's because they all are horrible, Ived played them all you name it I have played it, nothing will ever compare to the old school mmorpg titles. It seems like mmorpg's are getting worst and worst, why?, because the companies are looking at dollar bills and not fun factors associated with it in the process.

Ever since AC, EQ, EQ2 and AC2 and shadowbane, this genre has become a pile of shit.

Could anyone that's able to create the forum account please tell the admins that some of us aren't able to use our beta account to create our forum accounts please. This is why I get pissed playing Asian games because shit like this always happens.

I agree with the op and yes you aren't the only one. It's the same deal for me. WoW is just way more polished then any game that has come out since 1998.

So whats your game? :)))

Oh noes we get wings!. Did you hear that guys, Aion has flying Wings!, thats ALL the reason why we should go out and buy this game because we can fly with WINGS. Oh noes guys, we can WINGS away!.

I'm not going to buy the game just because you can fly with wings, how fkng retarded are people these days.

I don't think many people are going to buy the game just because you can fly in it.  I am going to buy it be cause of the high fantasy setting and its an Asian game that isn't F2P.  Hopefully this game and or FE will keep me busy till FFXIV comes out.

You would be surprised with how many people are trying and buying the game due to the fact of flying with wings. After all I was just being sarcastic to the OP with his stupid promotional video with 90% of it showing nothing but flying wings. He's gotta be your typical care bear that hasn't played more then 2-3 mmorpgs in his life. Next.

I am really frustrated because there is no good polished games out right now with good pvp. Waiting on swkotor but that is long time from now. WoW is not an option for me, so utterly tired of playing it. Oh well at least you can always count on television. :)

Well that sucks I guess I'm too late to beta it. Yeah I don't mind at all buying it for the actual game I just wanted to be able to beta it so I would know the in's and out's of the game better.  Also I have nothing else to play right now, there is no mmo's worth even playing until swkotor comes out. I guess I'm gonna have to just play single player games or watch more tv until this game comes out to give it a shot. Thanks for the information.

If I decide to pay for Aion through NCSoft's website will I be able to get into beta?. Or will I have to wait weeks and basically waste 50$ on nothing?.

I agree the game is seriously way too much of a grind, the control's are the WORST I have EVER witnessed. If you want serious carpal tunnel and arthritis then I would recommend this horrible pos game. The UI and hot bars are so bugged its unbelievable. Wow the running in this game is horrible as well. I don't wanna waste 3 hours just running from place to place. Every time I log out my bags go back to default and they are all cluster fked. The loot system is the worst ever, fuk that I would rather masterbate if I had too then to sit here and get irritated with this game.  This game caters to the macroer's and that is it. I am not going to pay fifteen dollars a month for this horrible waste of a game. Darkfall has gone into Darkfail. Die & RIP.

I'm not sure how they are going to handle mortal online but it was a huge disappointment that in darkfall you had to macro in order to keep up with current grand master elitists in the game. I can't even stomach to log into darkfall anymore. It's too bad I have been waiting for that game sense 2002. Currently awaiting the new star wars game, if that fails for me then I am done with mmo's for good.

The issue is not Darkfall specific, even if Darkfail faileded to address it properly, but is a problem for all skillbased MMORPGs that raises your skill by use rather than achievement.

I think the best sollution would for it to be based on both. I.e. if you swing your sword at a rat and your sword skill is already high then you wont raise it, period. However if you swing it at a dragon you would.

A "dumb" raise-by-using, with no check what you are using the skill for, would be doomed to fail. There needs to be some kind of check to make sure that what you are doing is difficult, compared to what your current skill level is, to raise the skill. Otherwise I think macro abuse would be very hard to avoid.

I know that. I've played mmorpg's for the last fifteen years and have played them all. That is one reason why I'm not even going to give mortal a chance because I am sick of playing sandbox games that require you to macro in order to keep up with other illegal macroing rejects. it would take me a hell of a time to grind skill's in darkfall vs a macro character that's on twenty four hours a day. The worst thing about darkfall is that there is no skill cap, that is the dumbest thing I've ever seen done in a skill game, why?, because macroing tools are going to macro forever and ever and ever while you are stuck behind getting demolished on and have no chance at surviving. Good lord, I cannot wait for SWTOR to come out. I am completely done with sandbox skill games.

Altough I agree with you that skill based games have this problem, dont confuse sandbox with skill based MMORPGs. Sandbox simply means that the game is not on rails and you can go anywhere and do what you want without any artifical boundries. However it is quite possible for a game to be sandbox and have levels, Asherons Call is a perfect example of that as it was a hybrid level/skill based game.

I am all for sand box games, however pure skill based games, I see alot of issues with. The greatest is ofcourse macroers but also the fact that in skill based game it rarely matters what you do. You swing a sword against a rat and you get X point increase, you swing a sword against a dragon and you get the same increase. That's absurd and shouldn't be like that.

Again Asherons Call had the sollution. There you got both exp which could raise your skills AND they were raised by using said skill, also it mattered there what you actually fought. If you fought a real powerful foe, not only would you get more exp, but your offensive skills would go up more. However there was very few restrictions based on your player level and a level 10 could, properly equipped and buffed, kill a level 200 mob (or player) as the deciding factor were your skills and equipment and not your player level which was just an indicator for how much exp you have accumulated.

That game had, imo, the perfect model. Too bad Turbine didnt realise that and went for a linear, class balanced POS with LOTRO.

Are you kidding me dude?. Are you trying to school me or something?. I was one of the oldest pk's on darktide. I think I know about asherons call. And you are wrong, Asherons Call had macroing up the arse also. I think you need to rephrase that answer. Every game that usually comes out sandbox are skill based games, so that's why I added sandbox within my post.

why people despise Free2Play?

to me its not different from monthly. free2play cashshpop to win right? well monthly  is buy ingame currency  to win. either way it is currupted on both model. im kindda laylow on mmo now. i mostly play psn and waiting for ff14 see how it do in ps3. hopfully console is less curruption.

so since both model is no difference.... runes of magic is pretty good.

The reason's why most people would rather pay to play mmorpg's instead of just buying the game itself is because the developers need money to fix bugs and add content to the game. If they just cash in and don't have a wave of income to support the game running or future then they won't be able to pull it off just off of a one time buy option. These type of games usually cost a a whole lot to create and the income just from sales won't even come close to writing off the debt's they owe unless they receive monthly income to pay for customer support, and everything in between.
