Locklain is correct - its time to upgrade, they're no longer supported.  However if its not an option because of his motherboard, etc. then there might not be anything he can do. 

If you could describe the problems hes having (screenshots would help too) I might be able to try and help.

You need to fly to that race's area.  Elves vs. Dark elves, Greenskins vs. Dwarves, Chaos vs. Empire all have their own scenarios.  Get to your warcamp (located just before the PVP area in the starting zones, and anywhere else) and fly to one of their scenarios.

Hit the M key in game and check out the entire map (right click to zoom out I believe) to see what I mean and what you can view from the map.  The game's huge, most people just don't realize it.

Finding a store with a preorder disc still in stock is your best bet - you can always cancel your preorder if you don't like the beta.


Aside from that, I, nor anyone else, can really guarantee you a good download of the client.  It's too popular right now for any server to really handle.  They're all going slow.

Community Involvement is pinnacle in PQ's and RVR.  You can't solo in either, you'll just die over and over.

PVE solo is viable, and most quests are designed to be done alone.  However, PQ's are where the guaranteed loot is, so most of the attention is put there.

Right click the tab, > filters.  Same as wow interface.

Something else I've noticed is that the general chat areas seem to be broken up in to many different areas per tier/location.  It seems like I can't run for five minutes without leaving one channel and entering another.  Maybe that was my imagination, but with very localized chat channels the people will be divided up making things seem even quieter.

Agreed.  Far too many channels.

Luckily, the open group system is amazing and it isn't too hard to track down warbands most times.  But local/general chat channels aren't all bad, sometimes they can be an entertaining diversion, and it's not good if the game feels like it's a single player game without your guild or party chat.

Its open beta.  No community will, or ever has existed in one.  People are deciding if they like the game and want to play it, not if they want to make friends.

OPEN BETA.  PEOPLE ARE PLAYING THE GAME, EVERYTHING GETS WIPED IN A WEEK.  This has never changed in the history of beta tests.  Do not expect an economy, curtosy, or any other form of cummunal function while in open beta.  Nobody cares.

Sum up my opinion in one word: meh.

Nice graphics, most are higher res than WoW (with some glaring exceptions which hopefully are temporary, otherwise they'd ruin the overall look). Captures the warhammer style perfectly. Performance is decent, runs quite well on a nice rig with some hitching, usually due to sudden loading of a huge number of PCs / NPCs.  Distant terrain textures look pretty awful (unless there is a hidden option to change this, i have everything maxed).

Open Beta.  Graphics have been down since. . . forever?  For the purpose of testing the game mechanics, not the textures.  From my understanding options will be enabled in the interface to adjust graphics once the game launches.

The biggest problem is the gameplay...mostly the combat system.  It has this disconnected, artificial and clunky feeling to it...hard to explain it exactly, but to me there's 2 big issues.  One, the animations and effects are REALLY POOR.  Characters stiffly attack eachother with some puny little poofs and explosions to mark hits.  Spells are a little more elaborate (BW AOEs are cool), but otherwise nothing great.  Character movement / combat animations remind me of Vanguard at launch.  Taking a comparison from WoW, character movement there is very fluid, I wouldn't be surprised if it was motion captured, even.  EQ2 also...the detail and elaborate, fluid motion in both games is a major point of immersion.

I'm not sure where everyone says the animations are very poor.  The game looks crisp and sharp to me when I play, there's no pixelation or loss of FPS as I attack.  The game's not full of fireworks, but there are more than adequate animations for abilities and spells alike.  I see this getting posted a lot, and have no idea where they're coming from.  Hardware compatibility interfering with display perhaps?

Character movement not fluid?  This is on your end then, they move cleanly and fluidly with no 'clunking' what so ever on my computer.

Second, combat is essentially a button-spam.  There is no real sense of danger, or strategy, or challenge.  Hit that one or two attacks until you kill your enemy, or run out of AP (if you do, autoattack for a few seconds, and repeat).  You'll get more attacks / abilities as you level up, but they don't feel any different.  Its basically a "whack-a-mole" system.  Perhaps this turns around entirely above 20, but its hard to imagine why that would happen.  Overall, its boring, and although I know low-level combat is supposed to be easy & forgiving, most other games I know of are a lot more dangerous for newbies, and require much more careful timing / management that WAR.  People accuse WoW of being the same kindof 1 or 2 attack spam, but i don't know of anybody that can play that way successfully, even at low levels, without dying quite frequently.

Spamming the same 2 buttons in WAR won't accomplish anything.  What level was your character, 5?  The abilities you gain each level are all different, and each class has an abundance of utility and combat variety at their disposal.  The global cooldown of 2 seconds allows strategy and timing with the correct skill, combat isn't fast paced and a button spam with no cooldowns.

PQs...don't feel strongly either way on them.  An interesting feature that encourages people to get together and bash some mobs in a small space with little risk.

Agreed.  PQ mobs need to hit 250% harder, and be 500% harder to kill.  It's absurdly easy, and zero risk.  Solo people doing PQ's should die every time, no questions asked.

RvR, scenarios:  Lets be honest, these are battlegrounds.  Take the first one i did as Chaos, Nordenwatch (sp?)  Might as well call it AB, with 3 bases and a shorter resource timer.  My understanding is that this type of thing is the major focus of endgame...if so, I wll pass, as I have spent more time in AV than any human should and can't realy take any more of that kind of thing.

Yep, the ideas of capturable points are directly taken from WOW.  Not.  No, scenario's are not the focus of the end game, RVR in general is.  Scenario's provide constant action accessable from anywhere in the world.  Open world RVR has similar objectives providing buffs when they're captured and held.  Open RVR is by far a better way to level your Battle and Reknown rankings.  Scenario's guarantee action from anywhere.  It's a trade off.

I think, overall, that the game is far too easy.  I have died exactly once on 6 characters, due to falling a large distance (losing 3/4+ health) then being attacked by several mobs.  Most places i want to go i can just train right through mobs to get there.  I barely look at my HP b/c i know nothing will happen to me.  Its the ultimate refinement of the WoW-style, western MMO--super easy & fast progression--combined with an endgame that is essentially endless battleground-style RVR.  Yawn.

 The game needs to be carebear'd down.  Mobs need to hit harder, healing needs to be scaled down, and turning your back to an NPC should have consequences, maybe a 10% chance to be snared.  Something.  Death penalty is a joke as it can just be cured for a laughable amount of money, and you always resurrect next to a healer.  Fast progression?  hardly.  Get past level 8, then come tell me how fast it took you to get to 16.

Summary:  It's a perfectly competent WoW clone, that will be successful, at least in the short term, because of one thing:  It's like WoW, but it isn't WoW.  I.E., it will attract the WoW crowd that is bored with the game at the moment but until now couldn't find anything remotely competitive. 

Probably.  Wow's an overpowered equipment grind and twink fest.  War isn't and because of RVR rank needed to wear the better equipment, it hampers twinking that much more.

I feel little motivation to continue.  Combat is boring, in PVE / PVP.  The combat system itself feels wrong, unnatural, clunky.  There is no sense of challenge, effort, peril...anything that makes a good GAME.  I'm rather dissappointed, I had some high hopes for this one.  Should have a bigger launch than AoC, then settle towards a respectable, but not dominating population (500k-1mil).  Not bad, but not great.  I likely will cancel my pre-order, since its unlikely i will want to pay for the game if i'm already disinterested in the beta.

Probably a good call on your part - don't play something you aren't interested in.  The launch will be better then AOC, but the remaining population afterwards depends on how many hard core pvpers interested in a balanced game come, and how many others stick around.  If there's nobody to kill, this game will have problems.  Whiney complainers that just want to PVP and don't bother to learn their character while doing so will get frustrated, come post here to complain the game is flawed in other areas - then quit.  Good riddance - but like I said, the crowds have to stay for the game to survive.

Numerical rating?  6, maybe 7 out of 10.  Letter grade?

FLAME ON! 
 

I give it an 8, only because the PVE is ludacrisly easy, balance and mechanics, 9.5 (the magus needs some loving).

 

Fantastic title.  Figures something thats probably the easiest part of the whole MMO deal is what breaks/doesn't work.

Magus, is susposed to be a defensive utility class like Engineer... but it sucks massively. Worst class I have ever played in an MMO to date. Still love the game, but omg, this class needs some serious work.

 

Sorcs and Bright wizards are not overpowered.  They die in 2 seconds if you melee them, and they also blow themselves up if they constantly nuke, which kills them just as fast as it kills you.  You have to manage the class's power with its ability to self destruct.  It's a very unique and often frustrating class.  Don't cry about it because you got nuked for 1/3 your hp a few times.  Go smack them with a sword, they drop quick.

And yes, in terms of effective ability, engineer and magus are near worthless.  Sure, if the enemy comes to you and you've got time, you can DPS a bit, but its not worth the trouble.  Great defensive characters - unfortunately, the game has too much movement and capture points to constantly be throwing down turrets, etc.

I've never had an engineer.  However from being higher up, I'm going to go ahead and say no, you can only have 1 pet out at a time.  Turret is a pet :)

 

The class is VERY powerful if played correctly.  It's a defensive character, not meant to assault or charge.  If you do that without a turret set up, you'll just get rolled over and over.

They wont delete PW+ characters. There's no reason to.

 

They aren't resetting characters, the point of PW+ was to alleviate the insane starting areas tomorrow will have. 

Servers should be back up within an hour.  Might I suggest passing the time freebasing (like I am) until then.

Like someone said, turn the sound off.

Also, it should be added the game sounds fine to everyone else.  Fix your rig.  Incompatible sound card, boinked speakers, etc, could all lead to this problem.

Or stop listening to rap.  Either or.

Sorceress is a ranged damage dealer, using her own spells to give her power (and potentially harm herself by overusing them).

The magus is a defensive ranged fighter, summoning stationary demons like turrets (and the engineer) to do damage.

Ballparking it there - VERY different characters.

You probably saw one effect.  Congrats.  Most of the spell effects are only 'slightly' more than purple bottles being thrown around, play the game for more than 5 minutes next time.

The text is not sharp, it  is not  readable and the game puts out an annoying amount of blabbler that squashes any  communication that teammates might have. In fact no one talks, they just run around mindlessly. at least in WoW people try to get to a node and communicate (or blame  one another ). 

Text is not sharp or readable?  Did you adjust it to your resolution, does your computer suck?  Filter the channels and open a group/channel tab.  Simple problems solved.  No one talks in open beta's because nobody cares, its all getting wiped away in a week or so. 

I really doubt that this game will sell as many copies as AoC, at least that game had a hook: the nice graphics (and boobies of course). This one has nothing memorable to it. You just run around in a WoW clone,  possibly in the same scenario and mash the same two  buttons for hours end. The graphics are worse, the animations are worse, the combat feels shallower. I got to level 8, this corresponds to approximately level 14 in WoW and I felt that I had fewer meaningful abilities than in WoW.  

I'm almost positive it has sold more copies than AOC, but I can't support that.  I'd be willing to bet my life it will, however - and it'll hold more then 50% of its player base after 2 months too.  The RVR experience is fun and balanced.  You want memories?  Go to Hawaii, get a girlfriend, have a kid, etc.  Clearly every MMO is a WOW clone.  You won't get anywhere hitting 2 buttons in WAR.  You have less abilities because unlike WOW they scale with your level, they don't get replaced. 

It has boring quests. In all fairness  WoW type questing will feel boring to those who went through WoW a few times, it is boring even in WoW already. The one positive that I saw was the guild tools. I liked how many types of options and advancements were for guilds. Now I could suspend my disbelief and pay for the game and hope that at level 40 every problem will be fixed, but I really doubt that. In all MMOS the beginner areas are best developed and quality goes down as leveling goes up.

It's got the same quests WOW, and every other MMO does, with a unique system for Public quests that reset frequently and distribute loot based on contribution.  You must have seen the entire spectrum of leveling from behind your level 8 character that you probably played for 5 minutes, got wtfpwnedbbq and came here crying that the game is bad just like 99% of the other crybaby's complaining about this game do.

Most dissapointed.

Disasspointment's probably hard for most pre-teens to handle.  Relax, mommy and daddy will start paying attention to you soon.

Sure.  Active is a relative term, and he's probably quoting his press release from august.  Who cares either way - AOC's going to be a graveyard (from what I understand, it already is) for the remainder of its life on the MMO market.  Play it if you want, but you'll probably be alone most of the time.

U.S. Time (EASTERN).  Should be around then - but who knows, I doubt they'll give us a set time because they wouldn't want to let us down if something goes wrong - which I don't see happening - but you never know.

 

Not at all worth doing in WAR.  You'd need to keep an eye on 2 characters in a fast paced environment, where healing is proactive and not reactive.

 

Also, terrain, movement, and tactics constantly change, it'd be impossible to do, and since almost all heals are over time, and there aren't many buffs from one specific class, its quite literally not worth doing.

Don't compare cross-game classes.  It'll just confuse everyone.  WAR's a build-from-the-ground-up PVP game.  WOW isn't, wasn't, and never will be.  Thank god.

Keep in mind that both classes also have no range (with the exception of the WP's healing, which doesn't really count).  If you get engaged from distance, the ironbreaker will build his grudges, but will still take damage.  The WP can throw his heals over time and keep moving.  Something to consider since RVRing is a lot of moving up or falling back instead of holding your ground (as an ironbreaker would do).  Although, that being said, there's definite demand for a line-holding tank in certain situations as well.

 

Flip a coin, try one of them, see what else is out there as your playing.  Good luck!

You've chosen 2 classes that are about equal DPS wise.  However, there are some differences:

The WP has to stop meleeing to heal himself and others at one point or another, or die.  He doesn't have the wounds an ironbreaker does - nor will he have the damage absorption, armor, or resists.

The Ironbreaker doesn't have to stop dpsing to heal, because he can't.  He takes less damage, but has a fixed amount of it he can take before getting killed - relying on his ability to take much less damage than others, or outside healing from friends to continue going.

Both are great classes with good surviveability, you'll - if anything - have a chance to learn the game wielding either of these two choices, and possibly find a 3rd class you'll love even more.
